Geometric Ergodicity of Affine Processes on Cones

For affine processes on finite-dimensional cones, we give criteria for geometric ergodicity - that is exponentially fast convergence to a unique stationary distribution. Ergodic results include both the existence of exponential moments of the limiting distribution, where we exploit the crucial affine property, and finite moments, where we invoke the polynomial property of affine semigroups. Furthermore, we elaborate sufficient conditions for aperiodicity and irreducibility. Our results are applicable to Wishart processes with jumps on the positive semidefinite matrices, continuous-time branching processes with immigration in high dimensions, and classical term-structure models for credit and interest rate risk.

Three essays on stopping

First, we give a closed-form formula for first passage time of a reflected Brownian motion with drift. This modifies a formula by Perry et al (2004). Second, we show that the maximum before a fixed drawdown is exponentially distributed for any drawdown threshold, if and only if the diffusion characteristic mu/sigma^2 is constant. This complements the sufficient condition formulated by Lehoczky (1977). Third, we give an alternative proof for the fact that the maximum at a fixed drawdown threshold is exponentially distributed for any spectrally negative Lévy process, a result due to Mijatovic and Pistorius (2012).

On Wishart and non-central Wishart distributions on symmetric cones

Necessary conditions for the existence of non-central Wishart distributions are given. Our method relies on positivity properties of spherical polynomials on Euclidean Jordan Algebras and advances an approach by Peddada and Richards (1991), where only a special case (positive semidefinite matrices, rank one non-centrality parameter) is treated. Not only needs the shape parameters be in the Wallach set - as is the case for Riesz measures - but also the rank of the non-centrality parameter is constrained by the size of the shape parameter. This rank condition has been recently proved with different methods for the special case of symmetric, positive semidefinite matrices (Letac and Massam (2011) and Graczyk, Malecki and Mayerhofer (2016)).

A note on the Esscher transform of affine Markov processes

In affine models, both the martingale property of stochastic exponentials and non-explosion of affine processes is characterized in terms of minimality of solutions to a system of generalized Riccati differential equations. This is the final improvement of previous results by Duffie, Filipovic and Schachermayer (2003), Mayerhofer, Muhle-Karbe and Smirnov (2011) and Keller-Ressel and Mayerhofer (2015) for processes on canonical state spaces.

Exponential moments of affine processes

We investigate the maximal domain of the moment generating function of affine processes in the sense of Duffie, Filipović and Schachermayer [Ann. Appl. Probab. 13 (2003) 984-1053], and we show the validity of the affine transform formula that connects exponential moments with the solution of a generalized Riccati differential equation. Our result extends and unifies those preceding it (e.g., Glasserman and Kim [Math. Finance 20 (2010) 1-33], Filipović and Mayerhofer [Radon Ser. Comput. Appl. Math. 8 (2009) 1-40] and Kallsen and Muhle-Karbe [Stochastic Process Appl. 120 (2010) 163-181]) in that it allows processes with very general jump behavior, applies to any convex state space and provides both sufficient and necessary conditions for finiteness of exponential moments.

Affine Processes

We put forward a complete theory on moment explosion for fairly general state-spaces. This includes a characterization of the validity of the affine transform formula in terms of minimal solutions of a system of generalized Riccati differential equations. Also, we characterize the class of positive semidefinite processes, and provide existence of weak and strong solutions for Wishart SDEs. As an application, we answer a conjecture of M.L. Eaton on the maximal parameter domain of non-central Wishart distributions. The last chapter of this thesis comprises three individual works on affine models, such as a characterization of the martingale property of exponentially affine processes, an investigation of the jump-behaviour of processes on positive semidefinite cones, and an existence result for transition densities of multivariate affine jump-diffusions and their approximation theory in weighted Hilbert spaces.

Affine processes on positive semidefinite d x d matrices have jumps of finite variation in dimension d > 1

The theory of affine processes on the space of positive semidefinite d x d matrices has been established in a joint work with Cuchiero, Filipović and Teichmann (2011). We confirm the conjecture stated therein that in dimension d greater than 1 this process class does not exhibit jumps of infinite total variation. This constitutes a geometric phenomenon which is in contrast to the situation on the positive real line (Kawazu and Watanabe, 1974). As an application we prove that the exponentially affine property of the Laplace transform carries over to the Fourier-Laplace transform if the diffusion coefficient is zero or invertible.

On the existence of non-central Wishart distributions

This paper deals with the existence issue of non-central Wishart distributions which is a research topic initiated by Wishart (1928), and with important contributions by e.g., Lévy (1937), Gindikin (1975), Shanbhag (1988), Peddada and Richards (1991). We present a new method involving the theory of affine Markov processes, which reveals joint necessary conditions on shape and non-centrality parameter. While Eaton's conjecture concerning the necessary range of the shape parameter is confirmed, we also observe that it is not sufficient anymore that it only belongs to the Gindikin ensemble, as is in the central case.

Affine processes on positive semidefinite matrices

This article provides the mathematical foundation for stochastically continuous affine processes on the cone of positive semidefinite symmetric matrices. This analysis has been motivated by a large and growing use of matrix-valued affine processes in finance, including multi-asset option pricing with stochastic volatility and correlation structures, and fixed-income models with stochastically correlated risk factors and default intensities.

Affine processes on symmetric cones

We consider affine Markov processes taking values in convex cones. In particular, we characterize all affine processes taking values in an irreducible symmetric cone in terms of certain Lévy-Khintchine triplets. This is the complete classification of affine processes on these conic state spaces, thus extending the theory of Wishart processes on positive semidefinite matrices, as put forward by Bru (1991).

Density Approximations for Multivariate Affine Jump-Diffusion Processes

We introduce closed-form transition density expansions for multivariate affine jump-diffusion processes. The expansions rely on a general approximation theory which we develop in weighted Hilbert spaces for random variables which possess all polynomial moments. We establish parametric conditions which guarantee existence and differentiability of transition densities of affine models and show how they naturally fit into the approximation framework. Empirical applications in credit risk, likelihood inference, and option pricing highlight the usefulness of our expansions. The approximations are extremely fast to evaluate, and they perform very accurately and numerically stable.

How singular are moment generating functions?

This short note concerns the possible singular behaviour of moment generating functions of finite measures at the boundary of their domain of existence. We look closer at Example 7.3 in O. Barndorff-Nielsen's book "Information and Exponential Families in Statistical Theory (1978)" and elaborate on the type of exhibited singularity. Finally, another regularity problem is discussed and it is solved through tensorizing two Barndorff- Nielsen's distributions.

On strong solutions for positive definite jump-diffusions

We show the existence of unique global strong solutions of a class of stochastic differential equations on the cone of symmetric positive definite matrices. Our result includes affine diffusion processes and therefore extends considerably the known statements concerning Wishart processes, which have recently been extensively employed in financial mathematics. Moreover, we consider stochastic differential equations where the diffusion coefficient is given by the alpha-th positive semidefinite power of the process itself with 0.5<alpha<1 and obtain existence conditions for them. In the case of a diffusion coefficient which is linear in the process we likewise get a positive definite analogue of the univariate GARCH diffusions.

A characterization of the martingale property of exponentially affine processes

We consider local martingales which are standard or stochastic exponentials M of one component X of a multivariate affine process in the sense of Duffie, Filipovic and Schachermayer (2003). By completing their characterization of conservative affine processes, we provide deterministic necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the parameters of X for M to be a true martingale.

On the functional equation Af^2+Bg^2=1 in a p-adic field of characteristic zero

For a fixed prime $p$, let $\mathbb C_p$ denote the complex $p$-adic numbers. For polynomials $A,B\in \mathbb C_p[x]$ we consider decompositions $A(x)f^2(x)+B(x)g^2(x)=1$ of entire functions $f,\,g$ on $\mathbb C_p$ and try to improve an impossibility result due to A. Boutabaa concerning transcendental $f,g$. We also provide an independent proof of a $p$-adic diophantic statement due to D. N. Clark, which is an important ingredient of Boutabaa's method.

On the parameter domain of Wishart distributions and their infinite divisibility

A complete characterization of Wishart distributions on the cones of positive semi-definite matrices is provided in terms of a description of their maximal parameter domain. This result is new in that also degenerate scale parameters are included. For such cases, the standard constraints on the range of the shape parameter may be relaxed. Furthermore, the infinitely divisible Wishart distributions are revealed as suitable transformations and embeddings of one dimensional gamma distributions. This note completes the findings of Lévy (1937) concerning infinite divisibility and Gindikin (1975) regarding the existence issue.

The wave equation on static singular space-times

The first part of my thesis lays the foundations to generalized Lorentz geometry. The basic algebraic structure of finite-dimensional modules over the ring of generalized numbers is investigated. The motivation for this part of my thesis evolved from the main topic, the wave equation on singular space-times. The second and main part of my thesis is devoted to establishing a local existence and uniqueness theorem for the wave equation on singular space-times. The singular Lorentz metric subject to our discussion is modeled within the special algebra on manifolds in the sense of Colombeau. Inspired by an approach to generalized hyperbolicity of conical-space times due to Vickers and Wilson, we succeed in establishing certain energy estimates, which by a further elaborated equivalence of energy integrals and Sobolev norms allow us to prove existence and uniqueness of local generalized solutions of the wave equation with respect to a wide class of generalized metrics. The third part of my thesis treats three different point value resp. uniqueness questions in algebras of generalized functions

On the characterization of p-adic Colombeau-Egorov generalized functions by their point values

We show that contrary to recent papers by S. Albeverio, A. Yu. Khrennikov and V. Shelkovich, point values do not determine elements of the so-called p-adic Colombeau-Egorov algebra uniquely. We further show in a more general way that for an Egorov algebra of generalized functions on a locally compact ultrametric space (M,d) taking values in a non-trivial ring, a point value characterization holds if and only if (M,d) is discrete. Finally, following an idea due to M. Kunzinger and M. Oberguggenberger, a generalized point value characterization of such an Egorov algebra is given. Elements of the latter are constructed which differ from the p-adic delta-distribution considered as a generalized function, yet coincide on point values with the latter.
