The Cauchy problem for the periodic Kadomtsev--Petviashvili--II equation below $L^2$

We extend Bourgain's $L^2$-wellposedness result for the KP-II equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ to initial data with negative Sobolev regularity. The key ingredient is a new linear $L^4$-Strichartz estimate which is effective on frequency-dependent time scales. The $L^4$-Strichartz estimates follow from combining an $\ell^2$-decoupling inequality recently proved by Guth--Maldague--Oh with semiclassical Strichartz estimates. Moreover, we rely on a variant of Bourgain's bilinear Strichartz estimate on frequency-dependent times, which is proved via the Córdoba--Fefferman square function estimate.

On smoothing estimates in modulation spaces and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with slowly decaying initial data

We show new local $L^p$-smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation with initial data in modulation spaces via decoupling inequalities. Furthermore, we probe necessary conditions by Knapp-type examples for space-time estimates of solutions with initial data in modulation and $L^p$-spaces. The examples show sharpness of the smoothing estimates up to the endpoint regularity in a certain range. Moreover, the examples rule out global Strichartz estimates for initial data in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $d \geq 1$ and $p > 2$, which was previously known for $d \geq 2$. The estimates are applied to show new local and global well-posedness results for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the line. Lastly, we show $\ell^2$-decoupling inequalities for variable-coefficient versions of elliptic and non-elliptic Schrödinger phase functions.

Strichartz estimates for Maxwell equations in media: The partially anisotropic case

We prove Strichartz estimates for solutions to Maxwell equations in three dimensions with rough permittivities, which have less than three different eigenvalues. To this end, Maxwell equations are conjugated to half-wave equations in phase space. We use the Strichartz estimates in a known combination with energy estimates to show the new well-posedness results for quasilinear Maxwell equations.

Time-harmonic solutions for Maxwell's equations in anisotropic media and Bochner-Riesz estimates with negative index for non-elliptic surfaces

We solve time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in anisotropic, spatially homogeneous media in intersections of $L^p$-spaces. The material laws are time-independent. The analysis requires Fourier restriction-extension estimates for perturbations of Fresnel's wave surface. This surface can be decomposed into finitely many components of the following three types: smooth surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature, smooth surfaces with Gaussian curvature vanishing along one-dimensional submanifolds, but without flat points, and surfaces with conical singularities. Our estimates are based on new Bochner-Riesz estimates with negative index for non-elliptic surfaces.

On the existence of periodic solutions to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation below $H^{1/2}(\mathbb{T})$

Existence and a priori estimates for real-valued periodic solutions to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation with initial data in $H^s$ are established for $s>0$. The short-time Fourier restriction norm method is employed to overcome the derivative loss. Further, non-existence of solutions below $L^2$ is proved conditional upon conjectured linear Strichartz estimates.
