Some more Fano threefolds with a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition

We exhibit several families of Fano threefolds with a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of these threefolds injects into cohomology. As a by-product of the argument, we observe that double covers of projective spaces admit a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition.

Algebraic cycles and intersections of three quadrics

Let $Y$ be a smooth complete intersection of three quadrics, and assume the dimension of $Y$ is even. We show that $Y$ has a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) $Y$ displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition for double planes.

On the Chow ring of certain Lehn-Lehn-Sorger-van Straten eightfolds

We consider a $10$-dimensional family of Lehn-Lehn-Sorger-van Straten hyperkähler eightfolds which have a non-symplectic automorphism of order $3$. Using the theory of finite-dimensional motives, we show that the action of this automorphism on the Chow group of $0$-cycles is as predicted by the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures. We prove a similar statement for the anti-symplectic involution on varieties in this family. This has interesting consequences for the intersection product in the Chow ring of these varieties.

Zero-cycles on double EPW sextics

The Chow rings of hyperKähler varieties are conjectured to have a particularly rich structure. In this paper, we focus on the locally complete family of double EPW sextics and establish some properties of their Chow rings. First we prove a Beauville-Voisin type theorem for zero-cycles on double EPW sextics; precisely, we show that the codimension-4 part of the subring of the Chow ring of a double EPW sextic generated by divisors, the Chern classes and codimension-2 cycles invariant under the anti-symplectic covering involution has rank one. Second, for double EPW sextics birational to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface, we show that the action of the anti-symplectic involution on the Chow group of zero-cycles commutes with the Fourier decomposition of Shen-Vial.

A remark on the motive of the Fano variety of lines of a cubic

Let $X$ be a smooth cubic hypersurface, and let $F$ be the Fano variety of lines on $X$. We establish a relation between the Chow motives of $X$ and $F$. This relation implies in particular that if $X$ has finite-dimensional motive (in the sense of Kimura), then $F$ also has finite-dimensional motive. This proves finite-dimensionality for motives of Fano varieties of cubics of dimension $3$ and $5$, and of certain cubics in other dimensions.

Hard Lefschetz for Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties

The main result of this note is a hard Lefschetz theorem for the Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties. The same argument also proves hard Lefschetz for Chow groups of Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces. As a consequence, we obtain new information about certain pieces of the Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties, and Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces. The proofs are based on work of Shen-Vial and Fu-Tian-Vial on multiplicative Chow-Künneth decompositions.

On a multiplicative version of Bloch's conjecture

A theorem of Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg asserts that if the Chow group of 0-cycles of a smooth complete complex variety decomposes, then the top-degree coherent cohomology group decomposes similarly. In this note, we prove that (a weak version of) the converse holds for varieties of dimension at most 5 that have finite-dimensional motive and satisfy the Lefschetz standard conjecture. The proof is based on Vial's construction of a refined Chow-Kunneth decomposition for these varieties.

Correspondences and singular varieties

What is generally known as the "Bloch--Srinivas method" consists of decomposing the diagonal of a smooth projective variety, and then considering the action of correspondences in cohomology. In this note, we observe that this same method can also be extended to singular and quasi--projective varieties. We give two applications of this observation: the first is a version of Mumford's theorem, the second is concerned with the Hodge conjecture for singular varieties.

Constraints on counterexamples to the Casas-Alvero conjecture, and a verification in degree 12

In a first (theoretical) part of this paper, we prove a number of constraints on hypothetical counterexamples to the Casas-Alvero conjecture, building on ideas of Graf von Bothmer, Labs, Schicho and van de Woestijne that were recently reinterpreted by Draisma and de Jong in terms of $p$-adic valuations. In a second (computational) part, we present ideas improving upon Diaz-Toca and Gonzalez-Vega's Gröbner basis approach to the Casas-Alvero conjecture. One application is an extension of the proof of Graf von Bothmer et al. to the cases $5p^k$, $6p^k$ and $7p^k$ (that is, for each of these cases, we elaborate the finite list of primes $p$ for which their proof is not applicable). Finally, by combining both parts, we settle the Casas-Alvero conjecture in degree 12 (the smallest open case).

Constraints on hypothetical counterexamples to the Casas-Alvero conjecture

The Casas-Alvero conjecture states: if a complex univariate polynomial has a common root with each of its derivatives, then it has a unique root. We show that hypothetical counterexamples must have at least 5 different roots. The first case where the conjecture is not known is in degree 12. We study the case of degree 12, and more generally degree p+1, where p is a prime number. While we don't come closing to solving the conjecture in degree 12, we present several further constraints that counterexamples would have to satisfy.
