On proper splinters in positive characteristic

While the splinter property is a local property for Noetherian schemes in characteristic zero, Bhatt observed that it imposes strong conditions on the global geometry of proper schemes in positive characteristic. We show that if a proper scheme over a field of positive characteristic is a splinter, then its Nori fundamental group scheme is trivial and its Kodaira dimension is negative. In another direction, Bhatt also showed that any splinter in positive characteristic is a derived splinter. We ask whether the splinter property is a derived invariant for projective varieties in positive characteristic and give a positive answer for normal Gorenstein projective varieties with big anticanonical divisor. We also show that global F-regularity is a derived invariant for normal Gorenstein projective varieties in positive characteristic.

On the birational motive of hyper-Kähler varieties

We introduce a new ascending filtration, that we call the co-radical filtration in analogy with the basic theory of co-algebras, on the Chow groups of pointed smooth projective varieties. In the case of zero-cycles on projective hyper-Kähler manifolds, we conjecture it agrees with a filtration introduced by Voisin. This is established for moduli spaces of stable objects on K3 surfaces, for generalized Kummer varieties and for the Fano variety of lines on a smooth cubic fourfold. Our overall strategy is to view the birational motive of a smooth projective variety as a co-algebra object with respect to the diagonal embedding and to show in the aforementioned cases the existence of a so-called strict grading whose associated filtration agrees with the filtration of Voisin. As results of independent interest, we upgrade to rational equivalence Voisin's notion of "surface decomposition" and show that the birational motive of some projective hyper-Kähler manifolds is determined, as a co-algebra object, by the birational motive of a surface. We also relate our co-radical filtration on the Chow groups of abelian varieties to Beauville's eigenspace decomposition.

A motivic global Torelli theorem for isogenous K3 surfaces

We prove that the Chow motives of twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces are isomorphic, not only as Chow motives (due to Huybrechts), but also as Frobenius algebra objects. Combined with a recent result of Huybrechts, we conclude that two complex projective K3 surfaces are isogenous (i.e. their second rational cohomology groups are Hodge isometric) if and only if their Chow motives are isomorphic as Frobenius algebra objects; this can be regarded as a motivic Torelli-type theorem. We ask whether, more generally, twisted derived equivalent hyper-Kaehler varieties have isomorphic Chow motives as (Frobenius) algebra objects and in particular isomorphic graded rational cohomology algebras. In the appendix, we justify introducing the notion of "Frobenius algebra object" by showing the existence of an infinite family of K3 surfaces whose Chow motives are pairwise non-isomorphic as Frobenius algebra objects but isomorphic as algebra objects. In particular, K3 surfaces in that family are pairwise non-isogenous but have isomorphic rational Hodge algebras.

On the image of the second l-adic Bloch map

For a smooth projective geometrically uniruled threefold defined over a perfect field we show that there exists a canonical abelian variety over the field, namely the second algebraic representative, whose rational Tate modules model canonically the third l-adic cohomology groups of the variety for all primes l. In addition, there exists a rational correspondence inducing these identifications. In the case of a geometrically rationally chain connected variety, one obtains canonical identifications between the integral Tate modules of the second algebraic representative and the third l-adic cohomology groups of the variety, and if the variety is a geometrically stably rational threefold, these identifications are induced by an integral correspondence. Our overall strategy consists in studying -- for arbitrary smooth projective varieties -- the image of the second ell-adic Bloch map restricted to the Tate module of algebraically trivial cycle classes in terms of the "correspondence (co)niveau filtration". This complements results with rational coefficients due to Suwa. In the appendix, we review the construction of the Bloch map and its basic properties.

Zero-cycles on double EPW sextics

The Chow rings of hyperKähler varieties are conjectured to have a particularly rich structure. In this paper, we focus on the locally complete family of double EPW sextics and establish some properties of their Chow rings. First we prove a Beauville-Voisin type theorem for zero-cycles on double EPW sextics; precisely, we show that the codimension-4 part of the subring of the Chow ring of a double EPW sextic generated by divisors, the Chern classes and codimension-2 cycles invariant under the anti-symplectic covering involution has rank one. Second, for double EPW sextics birational to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface, we show that the action of the anti-symplectic involution on the Chow group of zero-cycles commutes with the Fourier decomposition of Shen-Vial.

Parameter spaces for algebraic equivalence

A cycle is algebraically trivial if it can be exhibited as the difference of two fibers in a family of cycles parameterized by a smooth scheme. Over an algebraically closed field, it is a result of Weil that it suffices to consider families of cycles parameterized by curves, or by abelian varieties. In this paper, we extend these results to arbitrary base fields. The strengthening of these results turns out to be a key step in our work elsewhere extending Murre's results on algebraic representatives for varieties over algebraically closed fields to arbitrary perfect fields.

Derived equivalent threefolds, algebraic representatives, and the coniveau filtration

A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.

Distinguished models of intermediate Jacobians

We show that the image of the Abel-Jacobi map admits functorially a model over the field of definition, with the property that the Abel-Jacobi map is equivariant with respect to this model. The cohomology of this abelian variety over the base field is isomorphic as a Galois representation to the deepest part of the coniveau filtration of the cohomology of the projective variety. Moreover, we show that this model over the base field is dominated by the Albanese variety of a product of components of the Hilbert scheme of the projective variety, and thus we answer a question of Mazur. We also recover a result of Deligne on complete intersections of Hodge level one.

Exceptional collections, and the Neron-Severi lattice for surfaces

We work out properties of smooth projective varieties over a (not necessarily algebraically closed) field that admit collections of objects in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves that are either full exceptional, or numerically exceptional of maximal length. Our main result gives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Neron-Severi lattice for a smooth projective surface with holomorphic Euler characteristic 1 to admit a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length, consisting of line-bundles. As a consequence we determine exactly which complex surfaces with vanishing irregularity and geometric genus admit a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length. Another consequence is that a minimal geometrically rational surface with a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length is rational.

Remarks on motives of abelian type

A motive over a field $k$ is of abelian type if it belongs to the thick and rigid subcategory of Chow motives spanned by the motives of abelian varieties over $k$. This paper contains three sections of independent interest. First, we show that a motive which becomes of abelian type after a base field extension of algebraically closed fields is of abelian type. Given a field extension $K/k$ and a motive $M$ over $k$, we also show that $M$ is finite-dimensional if and only if $M_K$ is finite-dimensional. As a corollary, we obtain Chow--Kuenneth decompositions for varieties that become isomorphic to an abelian variety after some field extension. Second, let $Ω$ be a universal domain containing $k$. We show that Murre's conjectures for motives of abelian type over $k$ reduce to Murre's conjecture (D) for products of curves over $Ω$. In particular, we show that Murre's conjecture (D) for products of curves over $Ω$ implies Beauville's vanishing conjecture on abelian varieties over $k$. Finally, we give criteria on Chow groups for a motive to be of abelian type. For instance, we show that $M$ is of abelian type if and only if the total Chow group of algebraically trivial cycles $CH_*(M_Ω)_{alg}$ is spanned, via the action of correspondences, by the Chow groups of products of curves. We also show that a morphism of motives $f: N \to M$, with $N$ Kimura finite-dimensional, which induces a surjection $f_* : CH_*(N_Ω)_{alg} \to CH_*(M_Ω)_{alg}$ also induces a surjection $f_* : CH_*(N_Ω)_{hom} \to CH_*(M_Ω)_{hom}$ on homologically trivial cycles.

The Fourier transform for certain hyperKaehler fourfolds

Using a codimension-$1$ algebraic cycle obtained from the Poincaré line bundle, Beauville defined the Fourier transform on the Chow groups of an abelian variety $A$ and showed that the Fourier transform induces a decomposition of the Chow ring $CH^*(A)$. By using a codimension-$2$ algebraic cycle representing the Beauville--Bogomolov class, we give evidence for the existence of a similar decomposition for the Chow ring of hyperKähler varieties deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface. We indeed establish the existence of such a decomposition for the Hilbert scheme of length-$2$ subschemes on a K3 surface and for the variety of lines on a very general cubic fourfold.

Algebraic cycles and fibrations

Let $f : X -> B$ be a projective surjective morphism between quasi-projective varieties. The goal of this paper is the study of the Chow groups of $X$ in terms of the Chow groups of $B$ and of the fibers of $f$. One of the applications concerns quadric bundles. When $X$ and $B$ are smooth projective and when $f$ is a flat quadric fibration, we show that the motive of $X$ is "built" from the motives of varieties of dimension less than the dimension of $B$.

Non-commutative resolutions and Grothendieck groups

Let $R$ be a noetherian normal domain. We investigate when $R$ admits a faithful module whose endomorphism ring has finite global dimension. This can be viewed as a non-commutative desingularization of $\Spec(R)$. We show that the existence of such modules forces stringent conditions on the Grothendieck group of finitely generated modules over $R$. In some cases those conditions are enough to imply that $\Spec(R)$ has only rational singularities.

Chow groups of smooth varieties fibred by quadrics

Let $f : X \rightarrow B$ be a proper flat dominant morphism between two smooth quasi-projective complex varieties $X$ and $B$. Assume that there exists an integer $l$ such that all closed fibres $X_b$ of $f$ satisfy $CH_j(X_b) = \Q$ for all $j \leq l$. Then we prove an analogue of the projective bundle formula for $CH_i(X)$ for $i \leq l$. When $B$ is a surface, $X$ is projective and $l = \lfloor \frac{\dim X - 3}{2} \rfloor$, this makes it possible to construct a Chow-Künneth decomposition for $X$ that satisfies Murre's conjectures. For instance we prove Murre's conjectures for complex smooth projective varieties $X$ fibred over a surface (via a flat morphism) by quadrics, or by complete intersections of dimension 4 of bidegree $(2,2)$.

Chow-Kuenneth decomposition for 3- and 4-folds fibred by varieties with small Chow group of zero-cycles

Let $k$ be a field and let $Ω$ be a universal domain over $k$. Let $f:X \r S$ be a dominant morphism defined over $k$ from a smooth projective variety $X$ to a smooth projective variety $S$ of dimension $\leq 2$ such that the general fibre of $f_Ω$ has trivial Chow group of zero-cycles. For example, $X$ could be the total space of a two-dimensional family of varieties whose general member is rationally connected. Suppose that $X$ has dimension $\leq 4$. Then we prove that $X$ has a self-dual Murre decomposition, i.e. that $X$ has a self-dual Chow--Kuenneth decomposition which satisfies Murre's conjectures (B) and (D). Moreover we prove that the motivic Lefschetz conjecture holds for $X$ and hence so does the Lefschetz standard conjecture. We also give new examples of threefolds of general type which are Kimura finite-dimensional, new examples of fourfolds of general type having a self-dual Murre decomposition, as well as new examples of varieties with finite degree three unramified cohomology.

Niveau and coniveau filtrations on cohomology groups and Chow groups

The Bloch-Beilinson-Murre conjectures predict the existence of a descending filtration on Chow groups of smooth projective varieties which is functorial with respect to the action of correspondences and whose graded parts depend solely on the topology -- i.e. the cohomology -- of $X$. In this paper, we wish to explore, at the cost of having to assume general conjectures about algebraic cycles, how the coniveau filtration on the cohomology of $X$ has an incidence on the Chow groups of $X$. However, by keeping such assumptions minimal, we are able to prove some of these conjectures either in low-dimensional cases or when a variety is known to have small Chow groups. For instance, we give a new example of a fourfold of general type with trivial Chow group of zero-cycles and we prove Murre's conjectures for threefolds dominated by a product of curves, for threefolds rationally dominated by the product of three curves, for rationally connected fourfolds and for complete intersections of low degree. The BBM conjectures are closely related to Kimura-O'Sullivan's notion of finite-dimensionality. Assuming the standard conjectures on algebraic cycles the former is known to imply the latter. We show that the missing ingredient for finite-dimensionality to imply the BBM conjectures is the coincidence of a certain niveau filtration with the coniveau filtration on Chow groups.

Projectors on the intermediate algebraic Jacobians

Let $X$ be a complex smooth projective variety of dimension $d$. Under some assumption on the cohomology of $X$, we construct mutually orthogonal idempotents in $CH_d(X \times X) \otimes \Q$ whose action on algebraically trivial cycles coincides with the Abel-Jacobi map. Such a construction generalizes Murre's construction of the Albanese and Picard idempotents and makes it possible to give new examples of varieties admitting a self-dual Chow-Künneth decomposition satisfying the motivic Lefschetz conjecture as well as new examples of varieties having a Kimura finite dimensional Chow motive. For instance, we prove that fourfolds with Chow group of zero-cycles supported on a curve (e.g. rationally connected fourfolds) have a self-dual Chow-Künneth decomposition which satisfies the motivic Lefschetz conjecture and consequently Grothendieck's standard conjectures. We also prove that hypersurfaces of very low degree are Kimura finite dimensional.

Pure motives with representable Chow groups

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. We show using Kahn's and Sujatha's theory of birational motives that a Chow motive over $k$ whose Chow groups are all representable belongs to the full and thick subcategory of motives generated by the twisted motives of curves.

Operations in Milnor K-theory

We show that operations in Milnor K-theory mod $p$ of a field are spanned by divided power operations. After giving an explicit formula for divided power operations and extending them to some new cases, we determine for all fields $k$ and all prime numbers $p$, all the operations $K^M_i/p \to K^M_j/p$ commuting with field extensions over the base field $k$. Moreover, the integral case is discussed and we determine the operations $K^M_i/p \to K^M_j/p$ for smooth schemes over a field.
