The Broué invariant of a pp-permutation equivalence

A perfect isometry II (introduced by Broué) between two blocks BB and CC is a frequent phenomenon in the block theory of finite groups. It maps an irreducible character ψψ of CC to ±\pm an irreducible character of BB. Broué proved that the ratio of the codegrees of ψψ and I(ψ)I(ψ) is a rational number with pp-value zero and that its class in Fp\mathbb{F}_p is independent of ψψ. We call this element the Broué invariant of II. The goal of this paper is to show that if II comes from a pp-permutation equivalence or a splendid Rickard equivalence between BB and CC then, up to a sign, the Broué invariant of II is determined by local data of BB and CC and therefore, up to a sign, is independent of the pp-permutation equivalence or splendid Rickard equivalence. Apart from results on pp-permutation equivalences, our proof requires new results on extended tensor products and bisets that are also proved in this paper. As application of the theorem on the Broué invariant we show that various refinements of the Alperin-McKay Conjecture, introduced by Isaacs-Navarro, Navarro, and Turull are consequences of pp-permutation equivalences or Rickard equivalences over a sufficiently large complete discrete valuation ring or over Zp\mathbb{Z}_p, depending on the refinement.

pp-permutation equivalences between blocks of group algebras

We extend the notion of a {pp-permutation equivalence} between two pp-blocks AA and BB of finite groups GG and HH, from the definition in [Boltje-Xu 2008] to a virtual pp-permutation bimodule whose components have twisted diagonal vertices. It is shown that various invariants of AA and BB are preserved, including defect groups, fusion systems, and Külshammer-Puig classes. Moreover it is shown that pp-permutation equivalences have additional surprising properties. They have only one constituent with maximal vertex and the set of pp-permutation equivalences between AA and BB is finite (possibly empty). The paper uses new methods: a consequent use of module structures on subgroups of G×HG\times H arising from Brauer constructions which in general are not direct product subgroups, the necessary adaptation of the notion of tensor products between bimodules, and a general formula (stated in these new terms) for the Brauer construction of a tensor product of pp-permutation bimodules.

Fusion systems of blocks of finite groups over arbitrary fields

To any block idempotent bb of a group algebra kGkG of a finite group GG over a field kk of characteristic p>0p>0, Puig associated a fusion system and proved that it is saturated if the kk-algebra kCG(P)ekC_G(P)e is split, where (P,e)(P,e) is a maximal kGbkGb-Brauer pair. We investigate in the non-split case how far the fusion system is from being saturated by describing it in an explicit way as being generated by the fusion system of a related block idempotent over a larger field together with a single automorphism of the defect group.

Orthogonal units of the bifree double Burnside ring

The bifree double Burnside ring BΔ(G,G)B^Δ(G,G) of a finite group GG has a natural anti-involution. We study the group B∘Δ(G,G)B^Δ_\circ(G,G) of orthogonal units in BΔ(G,G)B^Δ(G,G). It is shown that this group is always finite and contains a subgroup isomorphic to $B(G)^\times\rtimes \Out(G)$, where B(G)×B(G)^\times denotes the unit group of the Burnside ring of GG and $\Out(G)$ denotes the outer automorphism group of GG. Moreover it is shown that if GG is nilpotent then $B^Δ_\circ(G,G)\cong B(G)^\times\rtimes \Out(G)$. The results can be interpreted as positive answers to questions on equivalences of pp-blocks of group algebras in the case that the block is the group algebra of a pp-group.

Quasi-hereditary structure of twisted split category algebras revisited

Let kk be a field of characteristic 00, let C\mathsf{C} be a finite split category, let αα be a 2-cocycle of C\mathsf{C} with values in the multiplicative group of kk, and consider the resulting twisted category algebra A:=kαCA:=k_α\mathsf{C}. Several interesting algebras arise that way, for instance, the Brauer algebra. Moreover, the category of biset functors over kk is equivalent to a module category over a condensed algebra εAε\varepsilon A\varepsilon, for an idempotent ε\varepsilon of AA. In [2] the authors proved that AA is quasi-hereditary (with respect to an explicit partial order ≤\le on the set of irreducible modules), and standard modules were given explicitly. Here, we improve the partial order ≤\le by introducing a coarser order ⊴\unlhd leading to the same results on AA, but which allows to pass the quasi-heredity result to the condensed algebra εAε\varepsilon A\varepsilon describing biset functors, thereby giving a different proof of a quasi-heredity result of Webb, see [26]. The new partial order ⊴\unlhd has not been considered before, even in the special cases, and we evaluate it explicitly for the case of biset functors and the Brauer algebra. It also puts further restrictions on the possible composition factors of standard modules.

A ghost algebra of the double Burnside algebra in characteristic zero

For a finite group GG, we introduce a multiplication on the $\QQ$-vector space with basis $\scrS_{G\times G}$, the set of subgroups of G×GG\times G. The resulting $\QQ$-algebra $\Atilde$ can be considered as a ghost algebra for the double Burnside ring B(G,G)B(G,G) in the sense that the mark homomorphism from B(G,G)B(G,G) to $\Atilde$ is a ring homomorphism. Our approach interprets $\QQ B(G,G)$ as an algebra eAeeAe, where AA is a twisted monoid algebra and ee is an idempotent in AA. The monoid underlying the algebra AA is again equal to $\scrS_{G\times G}$ with multiplication given by composition of relations (when a subgroup of G×GG\times G is interpreted as a relation between GG and GG). The algebras AA and $\Atilde$ are isomorphic via Möbius inversion in the poset $\scrS_{G\times G}$. As an application we improve results by Bouc on the parametrization of simple modules of $\QQ B(G,G)$ and also of simple biset functors, by using results by Linckelmann and Stolorz on the parametrization of simple modules of finite category algebras. Finally, in the case where GG is a cyclic group of order nn, we give an explicit isomorphism between $\QQ B(G,G)$ and a direct product of matrix rings over group algebras of the automorphism groups of cyclic groups of order kk, where kk divides nn.

Twisted split category algebras as quasi-hereditary algebras

A category is called {\em split} if for every morphism s ⁣:X→Ys\colon X\to Y there exists a morphism t ⁣:Y→Xt\colon Y\to X such that s∘t∘s=ss\circ t\circ s = s. Let CC be a finite split category, let kk be a field of characteristic 0 and let αα be a 2-cocycle of CC with values in the unit group of kk. Then the twisted category algebra kαCk_αC is a quasi-hereditary algebra.

Permutation resolutions for Specht modules of Hecke algebras

In [Boltje,Hartmann: Permutation resolutions for Specht modules, J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), 141-162], a chain complex was constructed in a combinatorial way which conjecturally is a resolution of the (dual of the) integral Specht module for the symmetric group in terms of permutation modules. In this paper we extend the definition of the chain complex to the integral Iwahori Hecke algebra and prove the same partial exactness results that were proved in the symmetric group case. A complete proof of the exactness conjecture in the symmetric group case was recently given by Santana and Yudin, Adv. in Math. 229 (2012), 2578-2601.

A ghost ring for the left-free double Burnside ring and an application to fusion systems

For a finite group GG, we define a ghost ring and a mark homomorphism for the double Burnside ring of left-free (G,G)(G,G)-bisets. In analogy to the case of the Burnside ring B(G)B(G), the ghost ring has a much simpler ring structure, and after tensoring with $\QQ$ one obtains an isomorphism of $\QQ$-algebras. As an application of a key lemma, we obtain a very general formula for the Brauer construction applied to a tensor product of two pp-permutation bimodules MM and NN in terms of Brauer constructions of the bimodules MM and NN. Over a field of characteristic 0 we determine the simple modules of the left-free double Burnside algebra and prove semisimplicity results for the bifree double Burnside algebra. These results carry over to results about biset-functor categories. Finally, we apply the ghost ring and mark homomorphism to fusion systems on a finite pp-group. We extend a remarkable bijection, due to Ragnarsson and Stancu, between saturated fusion systems and certain idempotents of the bifree double Burnside algebra over $\ZZ_{(p)}$, to a bijection between all fusion systems and a larger set of idempotents in the bifree double Burnside algebra over $\QQ.$
