The engulfing property for sections of convex functions in the Heisenberg group and the associated quasi--metric

In this paper we investigate the property of engulfing for $H$-convex functions defined on the Heisenberg group ${\mathbb{H}}^n$. Starting from the horizontal sections introduced by Capogna and Maldonado, we consider a new notion of section, called ${\mathbb{H}}^n$-section, as well as a new condition of engulfing associated to the ${\mathbb{H}}^n$-sections, for an $H$-convex function defined in ${\mathbb{H}}^n.$ These sections, that arise as suitable unions of horizontal sections, are dimensionally larger; as a matter of fact, the ${\mathbb{H}}^n$-sections, with their engulfing property, will lead to the definition of a pseudo-metric in ${\mathbb{H}}^n$ in a way similar to Aimar, Forzani and Toledano in the Euclidean case. A key role is played by the property of round $H$-sections for an $H$-convex function, and by its connection with the engulfing properties.

Some results on condition numbers in convex multiobjective optimization

Various notions of condition numbers are used to study some sensitivity aspects of scalar optimization problems. The aim of this paper is to introduce a notion of condition number to study the case of a multiobjective optimization problem defined via m convex C^1,1 objective functions on a given closed ball in R^n. Two approaches are proposed: the first one adopts a local point of view around a given solution point, whereas the second one considers the solution set as a whole. A comparison between the two notions of well-conditioned problem is developed. We underline that both the condition numbers introduced in the present work reduce to the same of condition number proposed by Zolezzi in 2003, in the special case of the scalar optimization problem considered there. A pseudodistance between functions is defined such that the condition number provides an upper bound on how far from a well-conditioned function f a perturbed function g can be chosen in order that g is well-conditioned too. For both the local and the global approach an extension of classical Eckart-Young distance theorem is proved, even if only a special class of perturbations is considered.

c horizontal convexity on Carnot groups

Given a real-valued function $c$ defined on the cartesian product of a generic Carnot group $\G$ and the first layer $V_1$ of its Lie algebra, we introduce a notion of $c$ horizontal convex ($c$ H-convex) function on $\G$ as the supremum of a suitable family of affine functions; this family is defined pointwisely, and depends strictly on the horizontal structure of the group. This abstract approach provides $c$ H-convex functions that, under appropriate assumptions on $c,$ are characterized by the nonemptiness of the $c$ H-subdifferential and, above all, are locally H-semiconvex, thereby admitting horizontal derivatives almost everywhere. It is noteworthy that such functions can be recovered via a Rockafellar technique, starting from a suitable notion of $c$ H-cyclic monotonicity for maps. In the particular case where $c(g,v)=< ξ_1(g),v >,$ we obtain the well-known weakly H-convex functions introduced by Danielli, Garofalo and Nhieu. Finally, we suggest a possible application to optimal mass transportation.
