A semi-supervised approach to dark matter searches in direct detection data with machine learning

The dark matter sector remains completely unknown. It is therefore crucial to keep an open mind regarding its nature and possible interactions. Focusing on the case of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, in this work we make this general philosophy more concrete by applying modern machine learning techniques to dark matter direct detection. We do this by encoding and decoding the graphical representation of background events in the XENONnT experiment with a convolutional variational autoencoder. We describe a methodology that utilizes the `anomaly score' derived from the reconstruction loss of the convolutional variational autoencoder as well as a pre-trained standard convolutional neural network, in a semi-supervised fashion. Indeed, we observe that optimum results are obtained only when both unsupervised and supervised anomaly scores are considered together. A data set that has a higher proportion of anomaly score is deemed anomalous and deserves further investigation. Contrary to classical analyses, in principle all information about the events is used, preventing unnecessary information loss. Lastly, we demonstrate the reach of learning-focused anomaly detection in this context by comparing results with classical inference, observing that, if tuned properly, these techniques have the potential to outperform likelihood-based methods.

Scattering Interference effects on $H^+\to t\bar b$ Signals in MSSM Benchmark Scenarios

In this talk an investigation into the interference effects between the process $pp\to \bar{t}bH^+$ followed by the decay $H^+ \to t\bar{b}$ and the background process $pp \to t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ is presented. The level of interference in parts of the parameter space is shown to be high and as such it may spoil the results of typical analyses which treat signal and background as independent. This is shown for two benchmarks of the MSSM.

Top polarisation as a probe of CP-mixing top-Higgs coupling in $tjh$ signals

In this letter we explore beyond the Standard Model top-Higgs Yukawa couplings as a function of a CP-mixing parameter $ξ_t$ at the 14 TeV HL-LHC in the process $pp\to thj$. We observe that angular variables of the decay products of the top are non-trivially sensitive to $ξ_t$. This fact is exploited in a full detector level analysis that employs machine learning techniques to optimize signal sensitivity on a suite of variables, including lepton azimuthal angle. The key result of this study is an improved projected exclusion limit on $ξ_t$ even when including the realistic effects of detector smearing and a conservative estimate of systematic error.

Boosting the charged Higgs search prospects using jet substructure at the LHC

Charged Higgs bosons are predicted in variety of theoretically well-motivated new physics models with extended Higgs sectors. In this study, we focus on a type-II two Higgs doublet model (2HDM-II) and consider a heavy charged Higgs with its mass ranging from 500 GeV to 1 TeV as dictated by the $b\to sγ$ constraints which render $M_{H^\pm}>480$ GeV. We study the dominant production mode $H^\pm t$ associated production with $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ being the dominant decay channel when the pseudoscalar $A$ is considerably lighter. For such a heavy charged Higgs, both the decay products $W^\pm$ and $A$ are relatively boosted. In such a scenario, we apply the jet substructure analysis of tagging the fat pseudoscalar and $W$ jets in order to eliminate the standard model background efficiently. We perform a detailed detector simulation for the signal and background processes at the 14 TeV LHC. We introduce various kinematical cuts to determine the signal significance for a number of benchmark points with charged Higgs boson mass from 500 GeV to 1 TeV in the $W^\pm A$ decay channel. Finally we perform a multivariate analysis utilizing a boosted decision tree algorithm to optimize these significances.
