Aronson-Bénilan and Harnack estimates for the discrete porous medium equation

We consider the porous medium equation (PME) on a locally finite graph and identify suitable curvature-dimension (CD) conditions under which a discrete version of the fundamental Aronson-Bénilan estimate holds true for positive solutions of the PME. We also show that these estimates allow to prove Harnack inequalities which are structurally similar to the continuous case. The new CD conditions are illustrated with several concrete examples, e.g.\ complete and chain-like graphs.

Li-Yau and Harnack inequalities via curvature-dimension conditions for discrete long-range jump operators including the fractional discrete Laplacian

We consider operators of the form $L u(x) = \sum_{y \in \mathbb{Z}} k(x-y) \big( u(y) - u(x)\big)$ on the one-dimensional lattice with symmetric, integrable kernel $k$. We prove several results stating that under certain conditions on the kernel the operator $L$ satisfies the curvature-dimension condition $CD_Υ(0,F)$ (recently introduced by two of the authors) with some $CD$-function $F$, where attention is also paid to the asymptotic properties of $F$ (exponential growth at infinity and power-type behaviour near zero). We show that $CD_Υ(0,F)$ implies a Li-Yau inequality for positive solutions of the heat equation associated with the operator $L$. The Li-Yau estimate in turn leads to a Harnack inequality, from which we also derive heat kernel bounds. Our results apply to a wide class of operators including the fractional discrete Laplacian.

Bounded weak solutions of time-fractional porous medium type and more general nonlinear and degenerate evolutionary integro-differential equations

We prove existence of a bounded weak solution to a degenerate quasilinear subdiffusion problem with bounded measurable coefficients that may explicitly depend on time. The kernel in the involved integro-differential operator w.r.t. time belongs to the large class of ${\cal PC}$ kernels. In particular, the case of a fractional time derivative of order less than 1 is included. A key ingredient in the proof is a new compactness criterion of Aubin-Lions type which involves function spaces defined in terms of the integro-differential operator in time. Boundedness of the solution is obtained by the De Giorgi iteration technique. Sufficiently regular solutions are shown to be unique by means of an $L_1$-contraction estimate.

The entropy method under curvature-dimension conditions in the spirit of Bakry-Émery in the discrete setting of Markov chains

We consider continuous-time (not necessarily finite) Markov chains on discrete spaces and identify a curvature-dimension inequality, the condition $CD_Υ(κ,\infty)$, which serves as a natural analogue of the classical Bakry-Émery condition $CD(κ,\infty)$ in several respects. In particular, it is tailor-made to the classical approach of proofing the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality via computing and estimating the second time derivative of the entropy along the heat flow generated by the generator of the Markov chain. We prove that curvature bounds in the sense of $CD_Υ$ are preserved under tensorization, discuss links to other notions of discrete curvature and consider a variety of examples including complete graphs, the hypercube and birth-death processes. We further consider power type entropies and determine, in the same spirit, a natural CD condition which leads to Beckner inequalities. The $CD_Υ$ condition is also shown to be compatible with the diffusive setting, in the sense that corresponding hybrid processes enjoy a tensorization property.

Non-Autonomous Maximal Regularity in Hilbert Spaces

We consider non-autonomous evolutionary problems of the form $u'(t)+A(t)u(t)=f(t)$, $u(0)=u_0,$ on $L^2([0,T];H)$, where $H$ is a Hilbert space. We do not assume that the domain of the operator $A(t)$ is constant in time $t$, but that $A(t)$ is associated with a sesquilinear form $a(t)$. Under sufficient time regularity of the forms $a(t)$ we prove well-posedness with maximal regularity in $L^2([0,T];H)$. Our regularity assumption is significantly weaker than those from previous results inasmuch as we only require a fractional Sobolev regularity with arbitrary small Sobolev index.

Stability, instability, and blowup for time fractional and other non-local in time semilinear subdiffusion equations

We consider non-local in time semilinear subdiffusion equations on a bounded domain, where the kernel in the integro-differential operator belongs to a large class, which covers many relevant cases from physics applications, in particular the important case of fractional dynamics. The elliptic operator in the equation is given in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. We prove a well-posedness result in the setting of bounded weak solutions and study the stability and instability of the zero function in the special case where the nonlinearity vanishes at 0. We also establish a blowup result for positive convex and superlinear nonlinearities.

Global a priori bounds for weak solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations with nonstandard growth

In this paper we study a rather wide class of quasilinear parabolic problems with nonlinear boundary condition and nonstandard growth terms. It includes the important case of equations with a $p(t,x)$-Laplacian. By means of the localization method and De Giorgi's iteration technique we derive global a priori bounds for weak solutions of such problems. Our results seem to be new even in the constant exponent case.

Representation of solutions and large-time behavior for fully nonlocal diffusion equations

We study the Cauchy problem for a nonlocal heat equation, which is of fractional order both in space and time. We prove four main theorems: (i) a representation formula for classical solutions, (ii) a quantitative decay rate at which the solution tends to the fundamental solution, (iii) optimal $L^2$-decay of mild solutions in all dimensions, (iv) $L^2$-decay of weak solutions via energy methods. The first result relies on a delicate analysis of the definition of classical solutions. After proving the representation formula we carefully analyze the integral representation to obtain the quantitative decay rates of (ii). Next we use Fourier analysis techniques to obtain the optimal decay rate for mild solutions. Here we encounter the critical dimension phenomenon where the decay rate attains the decay rate of that in a bounded domain for large enough dimensions. Consequently, the decay rate does not anymore improve when the dimension increases. The theory is markedly different from that of the standard caloric functions and this substantially complicates the analysis. Finally, we use energy estimates and a comparison principle to prove a quantitative decay rate for weak solutions defined via a variational formulation. Our main idea is to show that the $L^2$-norm is actually a subsolution to a purely time-fractional problem which allows us to use the known theory to obtain the result.

Decay estimates for time-fractional and other non-local in time subdiffusion equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$

We prove optimal estimates for the decay in time of solutions to a rather general class of non-local in time subdiffusion equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$. An important special case is the time-fractional diffusion equation, which has seen much interest during the last years, mostly due to its applications in the modeling of anomalous diffusion processes. We follow three different approaches and techniques to study this particular case: (A) estimates based on the fundamental solution and Young's inequality, (B) Fourier multiplier methods, and (C) the energy method. It turns out that the decay behaviour is markedly different from the heat equation case, in particular there occurs a {\em critical dimension phenomenon}. The general subdiffusion case is treated by method (B) and relies on a careful estimation of the underlying relaxation function. Several examples of kernels, including the ultraslow diffusion case, illustrate our results.

Optimal decay estimates for time-fractional and other non-local subdiffusion equations via energy methods

We prove sharp estimates for the decay in time of solutions to a rather general class of non-local in time subdiffusion equations on a bounded domain subject to a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Important special cases are the time-fractional and ultraslow diffusion equation, which have seen much interest during the last years, mostly due to their applications in the modeling of anomalous diffusion. We study the case where the equation is in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. Our proofs rely on energy estimates and make use of a new and powerful inequality for integro-differential operators of the form $\partial_t (k\ast \cdot)$. The results can be generalized to certain quasilinear equations. We illustrate this by looking at the time-fractional $p$-Laplace and porous medium equation. Here it turns out that the decay behaviour is markedly different from that in the classical parabolic case.

Qualitative behavior of solutions for thermodynamically consistent Stefan problems with surface tension

The qualitative behavior of a thermodynamically consistent two-phase Stefan problem with surface tension and with or without kinetic undercooling is studied. It is shown that these problems generate local semiflows in well-defined state manifolds. If a solution does not exhibit singularities in a sense made precise below, it is proved that it exists globally in time and its orbit is relatively compact. In addition, stability and instability of equilibria is studied. In particular, it is shown that multiple spheres of the same radius are unstable, reminiscent of the onset of Ostwald ripening.

Strong solutions in the dynamical theory of compressible fluid mixtures

In this paper we investigate the compressible Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations (the so-called NSCH model) derived by Lowengrub and Truskinowsky. This model describes the flow of a binary compressible mixture; the fluids are supposed to be macroscopically immiscible, but partial mixing is permitted leading to narrow transition layers. The internal structure and macroscopic dynamics of these layers are induced by a Cahn-Hilliard law that the mixing ratio satisfies. The PDE constitute a strongly coupled hyperbolic-parabolic system. We establish a local existence and uniqueness result for strong solutions.

On the qualitative behavior of incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions: the case of equal densities

The study of the basic model for incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions in the case of equal densities, initiated in the paper Prüss, Shibata, Shimizu, and Simonett [16], is continued here with a stability analysis of equilibria and results on the asymptotic behavior of global solutions. The results parallel those for the thermodynamically consistent Stefan problem with surface tension obtained in Prüss, Simonett, and Zacher [19].

Global strong solvability of a quasilinear subdiffusion problem

We prove the global strong solvability of a quasilinear initial-boundary value problem with fractional time derivative of order less than one. Such problems arise in mathematical physics in the context of anomalous diffusion and the modelling of dynamic processes in materials with memory. The proof relies heavily on a regularity result about the interior Hölder continuity of weak solutions to time fractional diffusion equations, which has been proved recently by the author. We further establish a basic $L_2$ decay estimate for the special case with vanishing external source term and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition.

A priori bounds for degenerate and singular evolutionary partial integro-differential equations

We study quasilinear evolutionary partial integro-differential equations of second order which include time fractional $p$-Laplace equations of time order less than one. By means of suitable energy estimates and De Giorgi's iteration technique we establish results asserting the global boundedness of appropriately defined weak solutions of these problems. We also show that a maximum principle is valid for such equations.

A weak Harnack inequality for fractional evolution equations with discontinuous coefficients

We study linear time fractional diffusion equations in divergence form of time order less than one. It is merely assumed that the coefficients are measurable and bounded, and that they satisfy a uniform parabolicity condition. As the main result we establish for nonnegative weak supersolutions of such problems a weak Harnack inequality with optimal critical exponent. The proof relies on new a priori estimates for time fractional problems and uses Moser's iteration technique and an abstract lemma of Bombieri and Giusti, the latter allowing to avoid the rather technically involved approach via BMO. As applications of the weak Harnack inequality we establish the strong maximum principle, continuity of weak solutions at t = 0, and a Liouville type theorem.

On convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic problems

We show convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in situations where the set of equilibria is non-discrete, but forms a finite-dimensional $C^1$-manifold which is normally hyperbolic. Our results do not depend on the presence of an appropriate Lyapunov functional as in the Łojasiewicz-Simon approach, but are of local nature.
