On the Navier-Stokes equations on surfaces

We consider the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid that completely covers a smooth, compact and embedded hypersurface $Σ$ without boundary and flows along $Σ$. Local-in-time well-posedness is established in the framework of $L_p$-$L_q$-maximal regularity. We characterize the set of equilibria as the set of all Killing vector fields on $Σ$ and we show that each equilibrium on $Σ$ is stable. Moreover, it is shown that any solution starting close to an equilibrium exists globally and converges at an exponential rate to a (possibly different) equilibrium as time tends to infinity.

On the Muskat flow

Of concern is the motion of two fluids separated by a free interface in a porous medium, where the velocities are given by Darcy's law. We consider the case with and without phase transition. It is shown that the resulting models can be understood as purely geometric evolution laws, where the motion of the separating interface depends in a non-local way on the mean curvature. It turns out that the models are volume preserving and surface area reducing, the latter property giving rise to a Lyapunov function. We show well-posedness of the models, characterize all equilibria, and study the dynamic stability of the equilibria. Lastly, we show that solutions which do not develop singularities exist globally and converge exponentially fast to an equilibrium.

Stability of equilibrium shapes in some free boundary problems involving fluids

In this paper the motion of two-phase, incompressible, viscous fluids with surface tension is investigated. Three cases are considered: (1) the case of heat-conducting fluids, (2) the case of isothermal fluids, and (3) the case of Stokes flows. In all three situations, the equilibrium states in the absence of outer forces are characterized and their stability properties are analyzed. It is shown that the equilibrium states correspond to the critical points of a natural physical or geometric functional (entropy, available energy, surface area) constrained by the pertinent conserved quantities (total energy, phase volumes). Moreover, it is shown that solutions which do not develop singularities exist globally and converge to an equilibrium state.

Well-posedness and long-time behavior for the Westervelt equation with absorbing boundary conditions of order zero

We investigate the Westervelt equation from nonlinear acoustics, subject to nonlinear absorbing boundary conditions of order zero, which were recently proposed by Kaltenbacher & Shevchenko. We apply the concept of maximal regularity of type $L_p$ to prove global well-posedness for small initial data. Moreover, we show that the solutions regularize instantaneously which means that they are $C^\infty$ with respect to time $t$ as soon as $t>0$. Finally, we show that each equilibrium is stable and each solution which starts sufficiently close to an equilibrium converges at an exponential rate to a possibly different equilibrium.

On the flow of non-axisymmetric perturbations of cylinders via surface diffusion

We study the surface diffusion flow acting on a class of general (non--axisymmetric) perturbations of cylinders $\mathcal{C}_r$ in ${\rm I \! R}^3$. Using tools from parabolic theory on uniformly regular manifolds, and maximal regularity, we establish existence and uniqueness of solutions to surface diffusion flow starting from (spatially--unbounded) surfaces defined over $\mathcal{C}_r$ via scalar height functions which are uniformly bounded away from the central cylindrical axis. Additionally, we show that $\mathcal{C}_r$ is normally stable with respect to $2 π$--axially--periodic perturbations if the radius $r > 1$,and unstable if $0 < r < 1$. Stability is also shown to hold in settings with axial Neumann boundary conditions.

On thermodynamically consistent Stefan problems with variable surface energy

A thermodynamically consistent two-phase Stefan problem with temperature-dependent surface tension and with or without kinetic undercooling is studied. It is shown that these problems generate local semiflows in well-defined state manifolds. If a solution does not exhibit singularities, it is proved that it exists globally in time and converges towards an equilibrium of the problem. In addition, stability and instability of equilibria is studied. In particular, it is shown that multiple spheres of the same radius are unstable if surface heat capacity is small; however, if kinetic undercooling is absent, they are stable if surface heat capacity is sufficiently large.

On incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions and variable surface tension

Our study of the basic model for incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions consistent with thermodynamics [10,11,12,16] is extended to the case of temperature-dependent surface tension. We prove well-posedness in an Lp-setting, study the stability of the equilibria of the problem, and show that a solution which does not develop singularities exists globally, and if its limit set contains a stable equilibrium it converges to this equilibrium in the natural state manifold for the problem as time goes to infinity.

Continuous maximal regularity on uniformly regular Riemannian manifolds

We establish continuous maximal regularity results for parabolic differential operators acting on sections of tensor bundles on Riemannian manifolds. As an application, we show that solutions to the Yamabe flow instantaneously regularize and become real analytic in space and time. The regularity result is obtained by introducing a family of parameter-dependent diffeomorphims acting on functions over Riemannian manifolds in conjunction with maximal regularity and the implicit function theorem.

On well-posedness, stability, and bifurcation for the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow

In this article, we study the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow (ASD), a fourth-order geometric evolution law. In particular, we prove that ASD generates a real analytic semiflow in the space of (2 + α)-little-Hölder regular surfaces of revolution embedded in R^3 and satisfying periodic boundary conditions. We also give conditions for global existence of solutions and prove that solutions are real analytic in time and space. Further, we investigate the geometric properties of solutions to ASD. Utilizing a connection to axisymmetric surfaces with constant mean curvature, we characterize the equilibria of ASD. Then, focusing on the family of cylinders, we establish results regarding stability, instability and bifurcation behavior, with the radius acting as a bifurcation parameter for the problem.

Qualitative behavior of solutions for thermodynamically consistent Stefan problems with surface tension

The qualitative behavior of a thermodynamically consistent two-phase Stefan problem with surface tension and with or without kinetic undercooling is studied. It is shown that these problems generate local semiflows in well-defined state manifolds. If a solution does not exhibit singularities in a sense made precise below, it is proved that it exists globally in time and its orbit is relatively compact. In addition, stability and instability of equilibria is studied. In particular, it is shown that multiple spheres of the same radius are unstable, reminiscent of the onset of Ostwald ripening.

On the qualitative behavior of incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions: the case of equal densities

The study of the basic model for incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions in the case of equal densities, initiated in the paper Prüss, Shibata, Shimizu, and Simonett [16], is continued here with a stability analysis of equilibria and results on the asymptotic behavior of global solutions. The results parallel those for the thermodynamically consistent Stefan problem with surface tension obtained in Prüss, Simonett, and Zacher [19].

Singular limits for the two-phase Stefan problem

We prove strong convergence to singular limits for a linearized fully inhomogeneous Stefan problem subject to surface tension and kinetic undercooling effects. Different combinations of $σ\to σ_0$ and $δ\toδ_0$, where $σ,σ_0 \ge 0$ and $δ,δ_0 \ge 0$ denote surface tension and kinetic undercooling coefficients respectively, altogether lead to five different types of singular limits. Their strong convergence is based on uniform maximal regularity estimates.

Continuous maximal regularity and analytic semigroups

In this paper we establish a result regarding the connection between continuous maximal regularity and generation of analytic semigroups on a pair of densely embedded Banach spaces. More precisely, we show that continuous maximal regularity for a closed operator $A: E_1 \rightarrow E_0$ implies that $A$ generates a strongly continuous analytic semigroup on $E_0$ with domain equal $E_1$.

On well-posedness of incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions: the case of equal densities

The basic model for incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions is derived from basic principles and shown to be thermodynamically consistent in the sense that the total energy is conserved and the total entropy is nondecreasing. The local well-posedness of such problems is proved by means of the technique of maximal $L_p$-regularity in the case of equal densities. This way we obtain a local semiflow on a well-defined nonlinear state manifold. The equilibria of the system in absence of external forces are identified and it is shown that the negative total entropy is a strict Ljapunov functional for the system. If a solution does not develop singularities, it is proved that it exists globally in time, its orbit is relatively compact, and its limit set is nonempty and contained in the set of equilibria.

Analytic solutions for the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension and gravity

We consider the motion of two superposed immiscible, viscous, incompressible, capillary fluids that are separated by a sharp interface which needs to be determined as part of the problem. Allowing for gravity to act on the fluids, we prove local well-posedness of the problem. In particular, we obtain well-posedness for the case where the heavy fluid lies on top of the light one, that is, for the case where the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is present. Additionally we show that solutions become real analytic instantaneously.

On the Rayleigh-Taylor Instability for the two-Phase Navier-Stokes Equations

The two-phase free boundary problem with surface tension and downforce gravity for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to equilibrium. The boundary symbol of this problem admits zeros in the unstable halfplane in case the heavy fluid is on top of the light one, which leads to the well-known Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Instability is proved rigorously in an $L_p$-setting by means of an abstract instability result due to Henry.

On convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic problems

We show convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in situations where the set of equilibria is non-discrete, but forms a finite-dimensional $C^1$-manifold which is normally hyperbolic. Our results do not depend on the presence of an appropriate Lyapunov functional as in the Łojasiewicz-Simon approach, but are of local nature.
