Higher Symplectic Capacities and the Stabilized Embedding Problem for Integral Ellipsoids

The third named author has been developing a theory of "higher" symplectic capacities. These capacities are invariant under taking products, and so are well-suited for studying the stabilized embedding problem. The aim of this note is to apply this theory, assuming its expected properties, to solve the stabilized embedding problem for integral ellipsoids, when the eccentricity of the domain has the opposite parity of the eccentricity of the target and the target is not a ball. For the other parity, the embedding we construct is definitely not always optimal; also, in the ball case, our methods recover previous results of McDuff, and of the second named author and Kerman. There is a similar story, with no condition on the eccentricity of the target, when the target is a polydisc: a special case of this implies a conjecture of the first named author, Frenkel, and Schlenk concerning the rescaled polydisc limit function. Some related aspects of the stabilized embedding problem and some open questions are also discussed.

The shape invariant of symplectic ellipsoids

The shape invariant of a symplectic manifold encodes the possible area classes of embedded Lagrangian tori. Potentially this is a powerful invariant, but for most manifolds the shape is unknown. We compute the shape for 4 dimensional symplectic ellipsoids where the ratio of the factors is an integer. The full shape invariant gives stronger embedding obstructions than results by considering only monotone tori.

On the Anti-Invariant Cohomology of Almost Complex Manifolds

We study the space of closed anti-invariant forms on an almost complex manifold, possibly non compact. We construct families of (non integrable) almost complex structures on $\R^4$, such that the space of closed $J$-anti-invariant forms is infinite dimensional, and also $0$- or $1$-dimensional. In the compact case, we construct $6$-dimensional almost complex manifolds with arbitrary large anti-invariant cohomology and a $2$-parameter family of almost complex structures on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold whose anti-invariant cohomology group has maximum dimension.

Symplectic embeddings of polydisks

In this note, we obtain new obstructions to symplectic embeddings of a product of disks (a polydisk) into a 4-dimensional ball. The polydisk P(r,s) is the product of the disk of area r with the disk of area s. The ball of capacity a, denoted B(a), is the ball with πr^2 \le a. We show P(1,2) embeds in B^4(a) if and only if a is at least 3. This shows the inclusion of P(1,2) in B^4(3) is optimal. The necessity of a \ge 3 implies that for this particular embedding problem neither the Ekeland-Hofer nor ECH capacities give a sharp obstruction. We contrast this with the case of ellipsoid embeddings into a ball when the ECH capacities give a complete list of obstructions [McDuff 2011]. Our obstruction does not come from a symplectic capacity, but instead from pseudoholomorphic foliations, thus the techniques seem to be special to dimension 4.

Symplectormophism groups of non-compact manifolds, orbifold balls, and a space of Lagrangians

We establish connections between contact isometry groups of certain contact manifolds and compactly supported symplectomorphism groups of their symplectizations. We apply these results to investigate the space of symplectic embeddings of balls with a single conical singularity at the origin. Using similar ideas, we also prove the longstanding expected result that the space of Lagrangian $\RR P^2$ in $T^*\RR P^2$ is weakly contractible.

On non-pure forms on almost complex manifolds

T.-J. Li and W. Zhang defined an almost complex structure $J$ on a manifold $X$ to be {\em \Cpf}, if the second de Rham cohomology group can be decomposed as a direct sum of the subgroups whose elements are cohomology classes admitting $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant representatives. It turns out (see T. Draghici, T.-J. Li and W. Zhang) that any almost complex structure on a 4-dimensional compact manifold is \Cpf. We study the $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant cohomology subgroups on almost complex manifolds, possibly non compact. In particular, we prove an analytic continuation result for anti-invariant forms on almost complex manifolds.

Symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids in dimension greater than four

We study symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids into balls. In the main construction, we show that a given embedding of 2m-dimensional ellipsoids can be suspended to embeddings of ellipsoids in any higher dimension. In dimension 6,s if the ratio of the areas of any two axes is sufficiently large then the ellipsoid is flexible in the sense that it fully fills a ball. We also show that the same property holds in all dimensions for sufficiently thin ellipsoids E(1,..., a). A consequence of our study is that in arbitrary dimension a ball can be fully filled by any sufficiently large number of identical smaller balls, thus generalizing a result of Biran valid in dimension 4.
