Bott-Chern Laplacian on almost Hermitian manifolds

Let $(M,J,g,ω)$ be a $2n$-dimensional almost Hermitian manifold. We extend the definition of the Bott-Chern Laplacian on $(M,J,g,ω)$, proving that it is still elliptic. On a compact Kähler manifold, the kernels of the Dolbeault Laplacian and of the Bott-Chern Laplacian coincide. We show that such a property does not hold when $(M,J,g,ω)$ is a compact almost Kähler manifold, providing an explicit almost Kähler structure on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold. Furthermore, if $(M,J,g,ω)$ is a connected compact almost Hermitian $4$-manifold, denoting by $h^{1,1}_{BC}$ the dimension of the space of Bott-Chern harmonic $(1,1)$-forms, we prove that either $h^{1,1}_{BC}=b^-$ or $h^{1,1}_{BC}=b^-+1$. In particular, if $g$ is almost Kähler, then $h^{1,1}_{BC}=b^-+1$, extending the result by Holt and Zhang for the kernel of Dolbeault Laplacian. We also show that the dimensions of the spaces of Bott-Chern and Dolbeault harmonic $(1,1)$-forms behave differently on almost complex 4-manifolds endowed with strictly locally conformally almost Kähler metrics. Finally, we relate some spaces of Bott-Chern harmonic forms to the Bott-Chern cohomology groups for almost complex manifolds, recently introduced by Coelho, Placini and Stelzig.

On cohomological and formal properties of Strong Kähler with torsion and astheno-Kähler metrics

We provide families of compact astheno-Kähler nilmanifolds and we study the behaviour of the complex blowup of such manifolds. We prove that the existence of an astheno-Kähler metric satisfying an extra differential condition is not preserved by blowup. We also study the interplay between Strong Kähler with torsion metrics and geometrically Bott-Chern metrics. We show that Fino-Parton-Salamon nilmanifolds are geometrically-Bott-Chern-formal, whereas we obtain negative results on the product of two copies of primary Kodaira surface, Inoue surface of type $\mathcal{S}_M$ and on the product of a Kodaira surface with an Inoue surface.

On the dimension of Dolbeault harmonic (1,1)-forms on almost Hermitian 4-manifolds

We prove that the dimension $h^{1,1}_{\overline\partial}$ of the space of Dolbeault harmonic $(1,1)$-forms is not necessarily always equal to $b^-$ on a compact almost complex 4-manifold endowed with an almost Hermitian metric which is not locally conformally almost Kähler. Indeed, we provide examples of non integrable, non locally conformally almost Kähler, almost Hermitian structures on compact 4-manifolds with $h^{1,1}_{\overline\partial}=b^-+1$. This answers to a question by Holt.

Cohomologies of complex manifolds with symplectic $(1,1)$-forms

Let $(X, J)$ be a complex manifold with a non-degenerated smooth $d$-closed $(1,1)$-form $ω$. Then we have a natural double complex $\overline{\partial}+\overline{\partial}^Λ$, where $\overline{\partial}^Λ$ denotes the symplectic adjoint of the $\overline{\partial}$-operator. We study the Hard Lefschetz Condition on the Dolbeault cohomology groups of $X$ with respect to the symplectic form $ω$. In \cite{TW}, we proved that such a condition is equivalent to a certain symplectic analogous of the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-Lemma, namely the $\overline{\partial}\, \overline{\partial}^Λ$-Lemma, which can be characterized in terms of Bott--Chern and Aeppli cohomologies associated to the above double complex. We obtain Nomizu type theorems for the Bott--Chern and Aeppli cohomologies and we show that the $\overline{\partial}\, \overline{\partial}^Λ$-Lemma is stable under small deformations of $ω$, but not stable under small deformations of the complex structure. However, if we further assume that $X$ satisfies the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-Lemma then the $\overline{\partial}\, \overline{\partial}^Λ$-Lemma is stable.

On the Anti-Invariant Cohomology of Almost Complex Manifolds

We study the space of closed anti-invariant forms on an almost complex manifold, possibly non compact. We construct families of (non integrable) almost complex structures on $\R^4$, such that the space of closed $J$-anti-invariant forms is infinite dimensional, and also $0$- or $1$-dimensional. In the compact case, we construct $6$-dimensional almost complex manifolds with arbitrary large anti-invariant cohomology and a $2$-parameter family of almost complex structures on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold whose anti-invariant cohomology group has maximum dimension.

Inequalities à la Frölicher and cohomological decompositions

We study Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies of a vector space endowed with two anti-commuting endomorphisms whose square is zero. In particular, we prove an inequality à la Frölicher relating the dimensions of the Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies to the dimensions of the Dolbeault cohomologies. We prove that the equality in such an inequality à la Frölicher characterizes the validity of the so-called cohomological property of satisfying the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-Lemma. As an application, we study cohomological properties of compact either complex, or symplectic, or, more in general, generalized-complex manifolds.

Almost Kähler structures on four dimensional unimodular Lie algebras

Let $J$ be an almost complex structure on a 4-dimensional and unimodular Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We show that there exists a symplectic form taming $J$ if and only if there is a symplectic form compatible with $J$. We also introduce groups $H^+_J(\mathfrak{g})$ and $H^-_J(\mathfrak{g})$ as the subgroups of the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology classes which can be represented by $J$-invariant, respectively $J$-anti-invariant, 2-forms on $\mathfrak{g}$. and we prove a cohomological $J-$decomposition theorem following \cite{DLZ}: $H^2(\mathfrak{g})=H^+_J(\mathfrak{g})\oplus H^-_J(\mathfrak{g})$. We discover that tameness of $J$ can be characterized in terms of the dimension of $H^{\pm}_J(\mathfrak{g})$, just as in the complex surface case. We also describe the tamed and compatible symplectic cones respectively. Finally, two applications to homogeneous $J$ on 4-manifolds are obtained.

On Cohomological Decomposition of Almost-Complex Manifolds and Deformations

While small deformations of Kähler manifolds are Kähler too, we prove that the cohomological property to be $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-pure-and-full is not a stable condition under small deformations. This property, that has been recently introduced and studied by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang in [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and T. Drǎghici, T.-J. Li, and W. Zhang in [Symplectic forms and cohomology decomposition of almost complex four-manifolds, Int. Math. Res. Not.], [On the J-anti-invariant cohomology of almost complex 4-manifolds, to appear in Q. J. Math.], is weaker than the Kähler one and characterizes the almost-complex structures that induce a decomposition in cohomology. We also study the stability of this property along curves of almost-complex structures constructed starting from the harmonic representatives in special cohomology classes.

On non-pure forms on almost complex manifolds

T.-J. Li and W. Zhang defined an almost complex structure $J$ on a manifold $X$ to be {\em \Cpf}, if the second de Rham cohomology group can be decomposed as a direct sum of the subgroups whose elements are cohomology classes admitting $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant representatives. It turns out (see T. Draghici, T.-J. Li and W. Zhang) that any almost complex structure on a 4-dimensional compact manifold is \Cpf. We study the $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant cohomology subgroups on almost complex manifolds, possibly non compact. In particular, we prove an analytic continuation result for anti-invariant forms on almost complex manifolds.

On the cohomology of almost-complex manifolds

Following T.-J. Li, W. Zhang [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.], we continue to study the link between the cohomology of an almost-complex manifold and its almost-complex structure. In particular, we apply the same argument in [T.-J. Li, W. Zhang, Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and the results obtained by D. Sullivan in [Cycles for the dynamical study of foliated manifolds and complex manifolds, Invent. Math.] to study the cone of semi-Kähler structures on a compact semi-Kähler manifold.

On astheno-Kaehler metrics

A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold of complex dimension $n$ is called {\em astheno-Kähler} if its fundamental $2$-form $F$ satisfies the condition $\partial \overline \partial F^{n - 2} =0$. If $n =3$, then the metric is {\em strong KT}, i.e. $F$ is $\partial \overline \partial$-closed. By using blow-ups and the twist construction, we construct simply-connected astheno-Kähler manifolds of complex dimension $n > 3$. Moreover, we construct a family of astheno-Kähler (non strong KT) $2$-step nilmanifolds of complex dimension $4$ and we study deformations of strong KT structures on nilmanifolds of complex dimension $3$. Finally, we study the relation between astheno-Kähler condition and (locally) conformally balanced one and we provide examples of locally conformally balanced astheno-Kähler metrics on $\T^2$-bundles over (non-Kähler) homogeneous complex surfaces.
