Counting, equidistribution and entropy gaps at infinity with applications to cusped Hitchin representations

We show that if an eventually positive, non-arithmetic, locally Hölder continuous potential for a topologically mixing countable Markov shift with (BIP) has an entropy gap at infinity, then one may apply the renewal theorem of Kesseböhmer and Kombrink to obtain counting and equidistribution results. We apply these general results to obtain counting and equidistribution results for cusped Hitchin representations, and more generally for cusped Anosov representations of geometrically finite Fuchsian groups.

Cusped Hitchin representations and Anosov representations of geometrically finite Fuchsian groups

We develop a theory of Anosov representation of geometrically finite Fuchsian groups in SL(d,R) and show that cusped Hitchin representations are Borel Anosov in this sense. We establish analogues of many properties of traditional Anosov representations. In particular, we show that our Anosov representations are stable under type-preserving deformations and that their limit maps vary analytically. We also observe that our Anosov representations fit into the previous frameworks of relatively Anosov and relatively dominated representations developed by Kapovich-Leeb and Zhu.

Topological restrictions on Anosov representations

We characterize groups admitting Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(3,\mathbb R)$, projective Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$, and Borel Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(4,\mathbb R)$. More generally, we obtain bounds on the cohomological dimension of groups admitting $P_k$-Anosov representations into $\mathsf{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$ and offer several characterizations of Benoist representations.

An improved bound for Sullivan's convex hull theorem

Sullivan showed that there exists $K_0$ such that if $Ω\subset \hat{\mathbb{C}}$ is a simply connected hyperbolic domain, then there exists a conformally natural $K_0$-quasiconformal map from $Ω$ to the boundary ${\rm Dome}(Ω)$ of the convex hull of its complement which extends to the identity on $\partialΩ$. Explicit upper and lower bounds on $K_0$ were obtained by Epstein, Marden, Markovic and Bishop. We improve on these bounds, by showing that one may choose $K_0\le 7.1695$.

Convergence and divergence of Kleinian surface groups

We characterize sequences of Kleinian surface groups with convergent subsequences in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the ending invariants of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Asymptotic behavior of end invariants in a convergent sequence predicts the parabolic locus of the algebraic limit as well as how the algebraic limit wraps within the geometric limit under the natural locally isometric covering map.

The pressure metric for Anosov representations

Using the thermodynamics formalism, we introduce a notion of intersection for projective Anosov representations, show analyticity results for the intersection and the entropy, and rigidity results for the intersection. We use the renormalized intersection to produce a $Out(Γ)$-invariant Riemannian metric on the smooth points of the deformation space of irreducible, projective Anosov representations of a word hyperbolic group $Γ$ into $SL(m,R)$ whose Zariski closure contains a generic element. In particular, we produce mapping class group invariant Riemannian metrics on Hitchin components which restrict to the Weil--Petersson metric on the Fuchsian loci. Moreover, we produce $Out(Γ)$-invariant metrics on deformation spaces of convex cocompact representations into $PSL(2,C)$ and show that the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set varies analytically over analytic families of convex cocompact representations into any rank 1 semi-simple Lie group.

Quasiconformal homogeneity after Gehring and Palks

In a very influential paper Gehring and Palka introduced the notions of quasiconformally homogeneous and uniformly quasiconformally homogeneous subsets of Euclidean space. Their motivation was to provide a characterization of quasi-disks, i.e. domains which are quasiconformally homeomorphic to the unit disk. As a generalization, Bonfert-Taylor, Canary, Martin and Taylor initiated the study of uniformly quasiconformally homogeneous hyperbolic manifolds. In this paper, we review the theory of quasiconformally homogeneous subsets of Euclidean and uniformly quasiconformally homogeneous hyperbolic manifolds. We finish with a discussion of open problems in the theory.

Uniformly perfect domains and convex hulls

Given a hyperbolic domain, the nearest point retraction is a conformally natural homotopy equivalence from the domain to the boundary of the convex core of its complement. Marden and Markovic showed that if the domain is uniformly perfect, then there exists a conformally natural quasiconformal map which admits a bounded homotopy to the nearest point retraction. We obtain an explicit upper bound on the quasiconformal dilatation which depends only on the injectivity radius of the domain.

The curious moduli spaces of unmarked Kleinian surface groups

Fixing a closed hyperbolic surface S, we define a moduli space AI(S) of unmarked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to S. This 3-dimensional analogue of the moduli space M(S) of unmarked hyperbolic surfaces homeomorphic to S has bizarre local topology, possessing many points that are not closed. There is, however, a natural embedding of M(S) into AI(S) and a compactification of AI(S) such that this embedding extends to an embedding of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M(S) into the compactification of AI(S).

The Thurston metric on hyperbolic domains and boundaries of convex hulls

We show that the nearest point retraction is a uniform quasi-isometry from the Thurston metric on a hyperbolic domain in the Riemann sphere to the boundary of the convex hull of its complement. As a corollary, one obtains explicit bounds on the quasi-isometry constant of the nearest point retraction with respect to the Poincare metric when the domain is uniformly perfect. We also establish Marden and Markovic's conjecture that a hyperbolic domain is uniformly perfect if and only if the nearest point retraction is Lipschitz with respect to the Poincare metric.
