A bound on the $L^2$-norm of a projective structure by the length of the bending lamination

One can associate to a complex projective structure on a surface holomorphic quadratic differential $Φ$ via the Schwarzian derivative and a bending lamination $λ$ via the Thurston parameterization. In this note we obtain upper bounds on the $L^2$-norm of $Φ$ in terms of the length of $λ$. The proof uses the theory of $W$-volume introduced by Krasnov-Schlenker.

Convergence of the gradient flow of renormalized volume to convex cores with totally geodesic boundary

We consider the Weil-Petersson gradient vector field of renormalized volume on the deformation space of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on (relatively) acylindrical manifolds. In this paper we prove the conjecture that the flow has a global attracting fixed point at the structure $M_{\rm geod}$ the unique structure with minimum convex core volume.

Lower bounds for volumes and orthospectra of hyperbolic manifolds with geodesic boundary

In this paper we derive explicit estimates for the functions which appear in the previous work of Bridgeman and Kahn. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit lower bound for the length of the shortest orthogeodesic in terms of the volume of a hyperbolic manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We also give an alternative derivation of a lower bound for the volumes of these manifolds as a function of the dimension.

Uniform bounds on harmonic Beltrami differentials and Weil-Petersson curvatures

In this article we show that for every finite area hyperbolic surface $X$ of type $(g,n)$ and any harmonic Beltrami differential $μ$ on $X$, then the magnitude of $μ$ at any point of small injectivity radius is uniform bounded from above by the ratio of the Weil-Petersson norm of $μ$ over the square root of the systole of $X$ up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. We apply the uniform bound above to show that the Weil-Petersson Ricci curvature, restricted at any hyperbolic surface of short systole in the moduli space, is uniformly bounded from below by the negative reciprocal of the systole up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. As an application, we show that the average total Weil-Petersson scalar curvature over the moduli space is uniformly comparable to $-g$ as the genus $g$ goes to infinity.

An improved bound for Sullivan's convex hull theorem

Sullivan showed that there exists $K_0$ such that if $Ω\subset \hat{\mathbb{C}}$ is a simply connected hyperbolic domain, then there exists a conformally natural $K_0$-quasiconformal map from $Ω$ to the boundary ${\rm Dome}(Ω)$ of the convex hull of its complement which extends to the identity on $\partialΩ$. Explicit upper and lower bounds on $K_0$ were obtained by Epstein, Marden, Markovic and Bishop. We improve on these bounds, by showing that one may choose $K_0\le 7.1695$.

The Poisson Bracket of Length functions in the Hitchin Component

Wolpert's cosine formula on Teichmüller space gives the Weil-Petersson Poisson bracket $\{l_α, l_β\}$ for geodesic length functions $l_α,l_β$ of closed curves $α,β$ as the sum of the cosines of the angle of intersection of the associated geodesics. This was recently generalized to Hitchin representations by Labourie. In this paper, we give a short proof of this generalization using Goldman's formula for the Poisson bracket on representation varieties of surface groups into reductive Lie groups.

The pressure metric for Anosov representations

Using the thermodynamics formalism, we introduce a notion of intersection for projective Anosov representations, show analyticity results for the intersection and the entropy, and rigidity results for the intersection. We use the renormalized intersection to produce a $Out(Γ)$-invariant Riemannian metric on the smooth points of the deformation space of irreducible, projective Anosov representations of a word hyperbolic group $Γ$ into $SL(m,R)$ whose Zariski closure contains a generic element. In particular, we produce mapping class group invariant Riemannian metrics on Hitchin components which restrict to the Weil--Petersson metric on the Fuchsian loci. Moreover, we produce $Out(Γ)$-invariant metrics on deformation spaces of convex cocompact representations into $PSL(2,C)$ and show that the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set varies analytically over analytic families of convex cocompact representations into any rank 1 semi-simple Lie group.

Moments of the boundary hitting function for the geodesic flow on a hyperbolic manifold

In this paper we consider finite volume hyperbolic manifolds X with non-empty totally geodesic boundary. We consider the distribution of the times for the geodesic flow to hit the boundary and derive a formula for the moments of the associated random variable in terms of the orthospectrum. We show that the the first two moments correspond to two cases of known identities for the orthospectrum. We further obtain an explicit formula in terms of the trilogarithm functions for the average time for the geodesic flow to hit the boundary in the surface case, using the third moment.

Uniformly perfect domains and convex hulls

Given a hyperbolic domain, the nearest point retraction is a conformally natural homotopy equivalence from the domain to the boundary of the convex core of its complement. Marden and Markovic showed that if the domain is uniformly perfect, then there exists a conformally natural quasiconformal map which admits a bounded homotopy to the nearest point retraction. We obtain an explicit upper bound on the quasiconformal dilatation which depends only on the injectivity radius of the domain.

Hausdorff dimension and the Weil-Petersson extension to quasifuchsian space

We consider a natural non-negative two-form G on quasifuchsian space that extends the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmuller space. We describe completely the positive definite locus of G, showing that it is a positive definite metric off the fuchsian diagonal of quasifuchsian space and is only zero on the "pure-bending'' tangent vectors to the fuchsian diagonal . We show that G is equal to the pullback of the pressure metric from dynamics. We use the properties of G to prove that at any critical point of the Hausdorff dimension function on quasifuchsian space the Hessian of the Hausdorff dimension function must be positive definite on at least a half-dimensional subspace of the tangent space. In particular this implies that Hausdorff dimension has no local maxima on quasifuchsian space.

Hyperbolic volume of n-manifolds with geodesic boundary and orthospectra

In this paper we describe a function $F_n:{\bf R}_+ \to {\bf R}_{+}$ such that for any hyperbolic n-manifold $M$ with totally geodesic boundary $\partial M \neq \emptyset$, the volume of $M$ is equal to the sum of the values of $F_n$ on the {\em orthospectrum} of $M$. We derive an integral formula for $F_n$ in terms of elementary functions. We use this to give a lower bound for the volume of a hyperbolic n-manifold with totally geodesic boundary in terms of the area of the boundary.

The Thurston metric on hyperbolic domains and boundaries of convex hulls

We show that the nearest point retraction is a uniform quasi-isometry from the Thurston metric on a hyperbolic domain in the Riemann sphere to the boundary of the convex hull of its complement. As a corollary, one obtains explicit bounds on the quasi-isometry constant of the nearest point retraction with respect to the Poincare metric when the domain is uniformly perfect. We also establish Marden and Markovic's conjecture that a hyperbolic domain is uniformly perfect if and only if the nearest point retraction is Lipschitz with respect to the Poincare metric.

Bounds on Volume Increase under Dehn Drilling Operations

In this paper we investigate how the volume of hyperbolic manifolds increases under the process of removing a curve, that is, Dehn drilling. If the curve we remove is a geodesic we are able to show that for a certain family of manifolds the volume increase is bounded above by $π\cdot l$ where $l$ is the length of the geodesic drilled. Also we construct examples to show that there is no lower bound to the volume increase in terms of a linear function of a positive power of length and in particular volume increase is not bounded linearly in length.
