Boosting superconductivity in ultrathin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films via nanofaceted substrates

In cuprate high-temperature superconductors the doping level is fixed during synthesis, hence the charge carrier density per CuO$_2$ plane cannot be easily tuned by conventional gating, unlike in 2D materials. Strain engineering has recently emerged as a powerful tuning knob for manipulating the properties of cuprates, in particular charge and spin orders, and their delicate interplay with superconductivity. In thin films, additional tunability can be introduced by the substrate surface morphology, particularly nanofacets formed by substrate surface reconstruction. Here we show a remarkable enhancement of the superconducting onset temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{on}}$ and the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c,2}$ in nanometer-thin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films grown on a substrate with a nanofaceted surface. We theoretically show that the enhancement is driven by electronic nematicity and unidirectional charge density waves, where both elements are captured by an additional effective potential at the interface between the film and the uniquely textured substrate. Our findings show a new paradigm in which substrate engineering can effectively enhance the superconducting properties of cuprates. This approach opens an exciting frontier in the design and optimization of high-performance superconducting materials.

Mapping the phase diagram of a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nanowire through electromigration

We use electromigration (EM) to tune the oxygen content of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) nanowi\-res. During EM, the dopant oxygen atoms in the nanowire are moved under the combined effect of electrostatic force and Joule heating. The EM current can be tuned to either deplete or replenish nanowires with oxygen, allowing fine tuning of its hole doping level. Electrical transport measurements and Kelvin probe microscopy corroborate good homogeneity of the doping level along the electromigrated nanowires. Thus, EM provides an effective method to study transport properties of YBCO in a wide doping range at the nanoscale in one and the same device.

Doping-dependence of the electron-phonon coupling in two families of bilayer superconducting cuprates

While electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is crucial for Cooper pairing in conventional superconductors, its role in high-$T_c$ superconducting cuprates is debated. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the oxygen $K$-edge, we studied the EPC in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) and Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (NBCO) at different doping levels ranging from heavily underdoped ($p =0.07$) to overdoped ($p=0.21$). We analyze the data with a localized Lang-Firsov model that allows for the coherent excitations of two phonon modes. While electronic band dispersion effects are non-negligible, we are able to perform a study of the relative values of EPC matrix elements in these cuprate families. In the case of NBCO, the choice of the excitation energy allows us to disentangle modes related to the CuO$_3$ chains and the CuO$_2$ planes. Combining the results from the two families, we find the EPC strength decreases with doping at $\mathbf{q_\parallel}=(-0.25, 0)$ r.l.u., but has a non-monotonic trend as a function of doping at smaller momenta. This behavior is attributed to the screening effect of charge carriers. We also find that the phonon intensity is enhanced in the vicinity of the charge-density-wave (CDW) excitations while the extracted EPC strength appears to be less sensitive to their proximity. By performing a comparative study of two cuprate families, we are able to identify general trends in the EPC for the cuprates and provide experimental input to theories invoking a synergistic role for this interaction in $d$-wave pairing.

Mobile orbitons in Ca$_2$CuO$_3$: crucial role of the Hund's exchange

We investigate the Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of a quasi-1D antiferromagnet Ca$_2$CuO$_3$. In addition to the magnetic excitations, which are well-described by the two-spinon continuum, we observe two dispersive orbital excitations, the $3d_{xy}$ and the $3d_{yz}$ orbitons. We carry out a quantitative comparison of the RIXS spectra, obtained with two distinct incident polarizations, with a theoretical model. We show that any realistic spin-orbital model needs to include a finite, but realistic, Hund's exchange $J_H \approx 0.5$ eV. Its main effect is an increase in orbiton velocities, so that their theoretically calculated values match those observed experimentally. Even though Hund's exchange also mediates some interaction between spinon and orbiton, the picture of spin-orbit separation remains intact and describes orbiton motion in this compound.

Fabrication and electrical transport characterization of high quality underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nanowires

We present the fabrication and electrical transport characterization of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nanowires. The nanowires have been realized without any protective capping layer and they show transport properties similar to those of the parent thin film, demonstrating that they have not been damaged by the nanopatterning. The current-voltage characteristics of the underdoped nanowires show large hysteretic voltage switching at the critical current, in contrast to the flux-flow like characteristics of optimally doped nanostructures, indicating the formation of a self-stabilizing hot spot. These results open up new possibilities of using the underdoped nanowires for single photon detection and for exploring the underdoped side of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ phase diagram at the nanoscale.

Grooved Dayem nanobridges as building blocks of high-performance YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ SQUID magnetometers

We present noise measurements performed on a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nanoscale weak-link-based magnetometer consisting of a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) galvanically coupled to a $3.5 \times 3.5~$mm$^2$ pick-up loop, reaching white flux noise levels and magnetic noise levels as low as $6~μΦ_0 / \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ and $100$~fT/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at $T=77$~K, respectively. The low noise is achieved by introducing Grooved Dayem Bridges (GDBs), a new concept of weak-link. A fabrication technique has been developed for the realization of nanoscale grooved bridges, which substitutes standard Dayem bridge weak links. The introduction of these novel key blocks reduces the parasitic inductance of the weak links and increases the differential resistance of the SQUIDs. This greatly improves the device performance, thus resulting in a reduction of the white noise.

Ultra low noise YBCO nanoSQUIDs implementing nanowires

We present results on ultra low noise YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nano Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (nanoSQUIDs). To realize such devices, we implemented high quality YBCO nanowires, working as weak links between two electrodes. We observe critical current modulation as a function of an externally applied magnetic field in the full temperature range below the transition temperature $T_C$. The white flux noise below 1 $μΦ_0/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at T = 8 K makes our nanoSQUIDs very attractive for the detection of small spin systems.

Josephson-like behavior in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ nano-bridges carrying the depairing current

We have investigated the zero-field critical supercurrent of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ bridges patterned from 50 nm thick films as a function of bridge width, ranging from 2 $μ$m to 50 nm. The critical current density monotonically increases for decreasing bridge width even for widths smaller than the Pearl length. This behavior is accounted for by considering current crowding effects at the junction between the bridge and the wider electrodes. Comparison to numerical calculations of the current distributions in our bridge geometries of various widths yields a (local) critical current density at 4.2 K of $1.3\times 10^8$ A/cm$^2$, the Ginzburg Landau depairing current density. The observation of up to 160 Shapiro-like steps in the current voltage characteristics under microwave irradiation substantiates the pristine character of our nano bridges with cross sections as small as $50\times 50$ nm$^2$.
