Lévy Processes, Generalized Moments and Uniform Integrability

We give new proofs of certain equivalent conditions for the existence of generalized moments of a Lévy process $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$; in particular, the existence of a generalized $g$-moment is equivalent to the uniform integrability of $(g(X_t))_{t\in [0,1]}$. As a consequence, certain functions of a Lévy process which are integrable and local martingales are already true martingales. Our methods extend to moments of stochastically continuous additive processes, and we give new, short proofs for the characterization of lattice distributions and the transience of Lévy processes.

On $q$-scale functions of spectrally negative Lévy processes

We obtain series expansions of the $q$-scale functions of arbitrary spectrally negative Lévy processes, including processes with infinite jump activity, and use these to derive various new examples of explicit $q$-scale functions. Moreover, we study smoothness properties of the $q$-scale functions of spectrally negative Lévy processes with infinite jump activity. This complements previous results of Chan et al. [7] for spectrally negative Lévy processes with Gaussian component or bounded variation.

The (strong) Liouville property for a class of non-local operators

We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the Liouville and strong Liouville properties of the infinitesimal generator of a Lévy process and subordinate Lévy processes. Combining our criterion with the necessary and sufficient condition obtained by Alibaud et al., we obtain a characterization of (orthogonal subgroup of) the set of zeros of the characteristic exponent of the Lévy process.

Homogenization of Symmetric Lévy Processes on $\mathbb{R}^d$

In this short note we study homogenization of symmetric $d$-dimensional Lévy processes. Homogenization of one-dimensional pure jump Markov processes has been investigated by Tanaka \emph{et al.} in 1992; their motivation was the work by Benssousan \emph{et al.}\ from 1975 on the homogenization of diffusion processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We investigate a similar problem for a class of symmetric pure-jump Lévy processes on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and we identify -- using Mosco convergence -- the limit process.

Singular integrals of subordinators with applications to structural properties of SPDEs

We study stochastic integrals driven by a general subordinator and establish a zero-one law for the finiteness of the resulting integral as well as moment estimates. As an application, we use these results to obtain structural properties of SPDEs driven by multiplicative pure jump noise, which include (1) a maximal inequality for a multiplicative stochastic convolution $Z_t$, (2) a small ball probability of $Z_t$, (3) the existence of invariant measures and accessibility to zero of SPDEs, and (4) a Galerkin approximation of solutions to SPDEs.

Asymptotic behaviour and functional limit theorems for a time changed Wiener process

We study the asymptotic behaviour of a properly normalized time changed Wiener processes. The time change reflects the fact that we consider the Laplace operator (which generates a Wiener process) multiplied by a possibly degenerate state-space dependent intensity $λ(x)$. Applying a functional limit theorem for the superposition of stochastic processes, we prove functional limit theorems for the normalized time changed Wiener process. The normalization depends on the asymptotic behaviour of the intensity function $λ$. One of the possible limits is a skew Brownian motion.

Strong convergence of the Euler--Maruyama approximation for a class of Lévy-driven SDEs

Consider the following stochastic differential equation (SDE) $$dX_t = b(t,X_{t-}) \, dt+ dL_t, \quad X_0 = x,$$ driven by a $d$-dimensional Lévy process $(L_t)_{t \geq 0}$. We establish conditions on the Lévy process and the drift coefficient $b$ such that the Euler--Maruyama approximation converges strongly to a solution of the SDE with an explicitly given rate. The convergence rate depends on the regularity of $b$ and the behaviour of the Lévy measure at the origin. As a by-product of the proof, we obtain that the SDE has a pathwise unique solution. Our result covers many important examples of Lévy processes, e.g. isotropic stable, relativistic stable, tempered stable and layered stable.

An Introduction to Lévy and Feller Processes. Advanced Courses in Mathematics - CRM Barcelona 2014

These lecture notes are an extended version of my lectures on Lévy and Lévy-type (Feller) processes given at the "Second Barcelona Summer School on Stochastic Analysis" 2014 organized by the Centre de Recerca Matemaatica (CRM). The lectures are aimed at advanced graduate and PhD students. In order to read these notes, one should have sound knowledge of measure theoretic probability theory and some background in stochastic processes, as it is covered in my books "Measures, Integals and Martingales" (Cambridge University Press) and "Brownian Motion" (de Gruyter). My purpose in these lectures is to give an introduction to Levy processes, and to show how one can extend this approach to space inhomogeneous processes which behave locally like Lévy processes: Lévy-type or Feller processes. These course notes will be published, together Davar Khoshnevisan's notes on "Invariance and Comparison Principles for Parabolic SPDEs" as "From Lévy-Type Processes to Parabolic SPDEs" by the CRM, Barcelona and Birkäuser, Cham 2017 (ISBN: 978-3-319-34119-4). The arXiv-version and the published version may differ in layout, pagination and wording, but not in content

Complete Bernstein functions and subordinators with nested ranges. A note on a paper by P. Marchal

Let $α:[0,1]\to [0,1]$ be a measurable function. It was proved by P. Marchal \cite{Mar15} that the function $$ ϕ^{(α)}(λ):=\exp\left[ \int_0^1\frac{λ-1}{1+(λ-1)x}\,α(x)\,d x \right],\quad λ>0 $$ is a special Bernstein function. Marchal used this to construct, on a single probability space, a family of regenerative sets $\mathcal R^{(α)}$ such that $\mathcal{R}^{(α)} \stackrel{\text{law}}{=} \overline{\{S^{(α)}_t:t\geq 0\}}$ ($S^{(α)}$ is the subordinator with Laplace exponent $ϕ^{(α)}$) and $\mathcal R^{(α)}\subset \mathcal R^{(β)}$ whenever $α\leqβ$. We give two simple proofs showing that $ϕ^{(α)}$ is a complete Bernstein function and extend Marchal's construction to all complete Bernstein functions.

Continuity Assumptions in Cake-Cutting

In important papers on cake-cutting -- one of the key areas in fair division and resource allocation -- the measure-theoretical fundamentals are not fully correctly given. It is not clear (i) which family of sets should be taken for the pieces of cake, (ii) which set-functions should be used for evaluating the pieces, and (iii) which is the relationship between various continuity properties appearing in cake-cutting. We show that probably the best choice for the familiy of subsets of $[0,1]$ is the Borel $σ$-algebra and for the set-function any `sliceable' Borel measure. At least in dimension one it does not make sense to work with only finitely additive contents on finite unions of intervals. For the continuity property we see two possibilities. The weaker is the traditional divisibility property, which is equivalent to being atom-free. The stronger is simply absolute continuity with respect to Lebesgue measure. We also consider the case of a base set (cake or pie) more general than $[0,1]$.

Reflected Spectrally Negative Stable Processes and their Governing Equations

This paper explicitly computes the transition densities of a spectrally negative stable process with index greater than one, reflected at its infimum. First we derive the forward equation using the theory of sun-dual semigroups. The resulting forward equation is a boundary value problem on the positive half-line that involves a negative Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative in space, and a fractional reflecting boundary condition at the origin. Then we apply numerical methods to explicitly compute the transition density of this space-inhomogeneous Markov process, for any starting point, to any desired degree of accuracy. Finally, we discuss an application to fractional Cauchy problems, which involve a positive Caputo fractional derivative in time.

Absolute continuity and singularity of probability measures induced by a purely discontinuous Girsanov transform of a stable process

In this paper we study mutual absolute continuity and singularity of probability measures on the path space which are induced by an isotropic stable Lévy process and the purely discontinuous Girsanov transform of this process. We also look at the problem of finiteness of the relative entropy of these measures. An important tool in the paper is the question under which circumstances the a.s. finiteness of an additive functional at infinity implies the finiteness of its expected value.

On a Cameron--Martin Type Quasi-Invariance Theorem and Applications to Subordinate Brownian Motion

We present a Cameron--Martin type quasi-invariance theorem for subordinate Brownian motion. As applications, we establish an integration by parts formula and construct a gradient operator on the path space of subordinate Brownian motion, and we obtain some canonical Dirichlet forms. These findings extend the corresponding classical results for Brownian motion.

On level and collision sets of some Feller processes

This paper is about lower and upper bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the level and collision sets of a class of Feller processes. Our approach is motivated by analogous results for Lévy processes by Hawkes (for level sets), Taylor and Jain & Pruitt (for collision sets). Since Feller processes lack independent or stationary increments, the methods developed for Lévy processes cannot be used in a straightforward manner. Under the assumption that the Feller process possesses a transition probability density, which admits lower and upper bounds of a certain type, we derive sufficient conditions for regularity and non-polarity of points; together with suitable time changes this allows us to get upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension.

Weak convergence of finite element approximations of linear stochastic evolution equations with additive Lévy noise

We present an abstract framework to study weak convergence of numerical approximations of linear stochastic partial differential equations driven by additive Lévy noise. We first derive a representation formula for the error which we then apply to study space-time discretizations of the stochastic heat equation, a Volterra-type integro-differential equation, and the wave equation as examples. For twice continuously differentiable test functions with bounded second derivative (with an additional condition on the second derivative for the wave equation) the weak rate of convergence is found to be twice the strong rate. The results extend earlier work by two of the authors as we consider general square-integrable infinite-dimensional Lévy processes and do not require boundedness of the test functions and their first derivative. Furthermore, the present framework is applicable to both hyperbolic and parabolic equations, and even to stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations.

Lower Bounds of the Hausdorff dimension for Feller processes

Let $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ be a Feller process generated by a pseudo-differential operator whose symbol satisfies $\|p(\cdot,ξ)\|_\infty\le c(1+|ξ|^2)$ and $p(\cdot,0)\equiv0.$ We prove that, for a large class of examples, the Hausdorff dimension of the set $\{X_t: t\in E\}$ for any analytic set $E\subset [0,\infty)$ is almost surely bounded below by $\betalower \Dh E$, where \begin{align*} \betalower&:=\sup\left\{δ>0: \lim_{|ξ|\to \infty} \frac{\inf_{z\in\R^d} \Re p(z,ξ)}{|ξ|^δ}=\infty\right\}. \end{align*}This, along with the upper bound $ \betaupperstar \Dh E$ with \begin{align*} \betaupperstar &:=\inf\left\{δ>0: \lim_{|ξ|\to \infty}\frac{\sup_{|η|\le {|ξ|}}\sup_{z\in\R^d} |p(z,η)|}{|ξ|^δ}=0\right\} \end{align*} established in Böttcher, Schilling and Wang (2014), extends the dimension estimates for Lévy processes of Blumenthal and Getoor (1961) and Millar (1971) to Feller processes.

Coupling property and gradient estimates of Lévy processes via the symbol

We derive explicitly the coupling property for the transition semigroup of a Lévy process and gradient estimates for the associated semigroup of transition operators. This is based on the asymptotic behaviour of the symbol or the characteristic exponent near zero and infinity, respectively. Our results can be applied to a large class of Lévy processes, including stable Lévy processes, layered stable processes, tempered stable processes and relativistic stable processes.

Lower bounded semi-Dirichlet forms associated with Lévy type operators

Let $k:E\times E\to [0,\infty)$ be a non-negative measurable function on some locally compact separable metric space $E$. We provide some simple conditions such that the quadratic form with jump kernel $k$ becomes a regular lower bounded (non-local, non-symmetric) semi-Dirichlet form. If $E=\R^n$ we identify the generator of the semi-Dirichlet form and its (formal) adjoint. In particular, we obtain a closed expression of the adjoint of the stable-like generator $-(-Δ)^{α(x)}$ in the sense of Bass. Our results complement a recent paper by Fukushima and Uemura (2012) and establishes the relation of these results with the symmetric principal value (SPV) approach due to Zhi-ming Ma and co-authors (2006).

Functional Inequalities and Subordination: Stability of Nash and Poincaré inequalities

We show that certain functional inequalities, e.g.\ Nash-type and Poincaré-type inequalities, for infinitesimal generators of $C_0$ semigroups are preserved under subordination in the sense of Bochner. Our result improves \cite[Theorem 1.3]{BM} by A.\ Bendikov and P.\ Maheux for fractional powers, and it also holds for non-symmetric settings. As an application, we will derive hypercontractivity, supercontractivity and ultracontractivity of subordinate semigroups.

On the Coupling Property and the Liouville Theorem for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes

Using a coupling for the weighted sum of independent random variables and the explicit expression of the transition semigroup of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by compound Poisson processes, we establish the existence of a successful coupling and the Liouville theorem for general Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Then we present the explicit coupling property of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes directly from the behaviour of the corresponding symbol or characteristic exponent. This approach allows us to derive gradient estimates for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes via the symbol.

On the Coupling Property of Lévy Processes

We give necessary and sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the coupling for Lévy processes (with non-degenerate jump part) is successful. Our method relies on explicit formulae for the transition semigroup of a compound Poisson process and earlier results by Mineka and Lindvall-Rogers on couplings of random walks. In particular, we obtain that a Lévy process admits a successful coupling, if it is a strong Feller process or if the Lévy (jump) measure has an absolutely continuous component.

Some Theorems on Feller Processes: Transience, Local Times and Ultracontractivity

We present sufficient conditions for the transience and the existence of local times of a Feller process, and the ultracontractivity of the associated Feller semigroup; these conditions are sharp for Lévy processes. The proof uses a local symmetrization technique and a uniform upper bound for the characteristic function of a Feller process. As a byproduct, we obtain for stable-like processes (in the sense of R.\ Bass) on $\R^d$ with smooth variable index $α(x)\in(0,2)$ a transience criterion in terms of the exponent $α(x)$; if $d=1$ and $\inf_{x\in\R} α(x)\in (1,2)$, then the stable-like process has local times.

Strong Feller Continuity of Feller Processes and Semigroups

We study two equivalent characterizations of the strong Feller property for a Markov process and of the associated sub-Markovian semigroup. One is described in terms of locally uniform absolute continuity, whereas the other uses local Orlicz-ultracontractivity. These criteria generalize many existing results on strong Feller continuity and seem to be more natural for Feller processes. By establishing the estimates of the first exit time from balls, we also investigate the continuity of harmonic functions for Feller processes which enjoy the strong Feller property.

Spatial Besov Regularity for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations on Lipschitz Domains

We use the scale of Besov spaces B^α_{τ,τ}(O), α>0, 1/τ=α/d+1/p, p fixed, to study the spatial regularity of the solutions of linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations on bounded Lipschitz domains O\subset R^d. The Besov smoothness determines the order of convergence that can be achieved by nonlinear approximation schemes. The proofs are based on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and characterizations of Besov spaces by wavelet expansions.

Weak order for the discretization of the stochastic heat equation driven by impulsive noise

Considering a linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equation driven by impulsive space time noise, dX_t+AX_t dt= Q^{1/2}dZ_t, X_0=x_0\in H, t\in [0,T], we approximate the distribution of X_T. (Z_t)_{t\in[0,T]} is an impulsive cylindrical process and Q describes the spatial covariance structure of the noise; Tr(A^{-α})<\infty for some α>0 and A^βQ is bounded for some β\in(α-1,α]. A discretization (X_h^n)_{n\in\{0,1,...,N\}} is defined via the finite element method in space (parameter h>0) and a θ-method in time (parameter Δt=T/N). For ϕ\in C^2_b(H;R) we show an integral representation for the error |Eϕ(X^N_h)-Eϕ(X_T)| and prove that |Eϕ(X^N_h)-Eϕ(X_T)|=O(h^{2γ}+(Δt)^γ) where γ<1-α+β.

Stochastic calculus for uncoupled continuous-time random walks

The continuous-time random walk (CTRW) is a pure-jump stochastic process with several applications in physics, but also in insurance, finance and economics. A definition is given for a class of stochastic integrals driven by a CTRW, that includes the Ito and Stratonovich cases. An uncoupled CTRW with zero-mean jumps is a martingale. It is proved that, as a consequence of the martingale transform theorem, if the CTRW is a martingale, the Ito integral is a martingale too. It is shown how the definition of the stochastic integrals can be used to easily compute them by Monte Carlo simulation. The relations between a CTRW, its quadratic variation, its Stratonovich integral and its Ito integral are highlighted by numerical calculations when the jumps in space of the CTRW have a symmetric Levy alpha-stable distribution and its waiting times have a one-parameter Mittag-Leffler distribution. Remarkably these distributions have fat tails and an unbounded quadratic variation. In the diffusive limit of vanishing scale parameters, the probability density of this kind of CTRW satisfies the space-time fractional diffusion equation (FDE) or more in general the fractional Fokker-Planck equation, that generalize the standard diffusion equation solved by the probability density of the Wiener process, and thus provides a phenomenologic model of anomalous diffusion. We also provide an analytic expression for the quadratic variation of the stochastic process described by the FDE, and check it by Monte Carlo.
