Complementary study of the standing wave solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in dipolar quantum gases

We study the stability of the standing wave solutions of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing Bose-Einstein condensation of dipolar quantum gases and characterize their orbit. As an intermediate step, we consider the corresponding constrained minimization problem and establish existence, symmetry and uniqueness of the ground state solutions.

Scattering for nonlinear Schrodinger equation under partial harmonic confinement

We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation under a partial quadratic confinement. We show that the global dispersion corresponding to the direction(s) with no potential is enough to prove global in time Strichartz estimates, from which we infer the existence of wave operators thanks to suitable vector-fields. Conversely, given an initial Cauchy datum, the solution is global in time and asymptotically free, provided that confinement affects one spatial direction only. This stems from anisotropic Morawetz estimates, involving a marginal of the position density.

A nonlinear Landau-Zener formula

We consider a system of two coupled ordinary differential equations which appears as an envelope equation in Bose-Einstein Condensation. This system can be viewed as a nonlinear extension of the celebrated model introduced by Landau and Zener. We show how the nonlinear system may appear from different physical models. We focus our attention on the large time behavior of the solution. We show the existence of a nonlinear scattering operator, which is reminiscent of long range scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and which can be compared with its linear counterpart.

Large time behavior in nonlinear Schrodinger equation with time dependent potential

We consider the large time behavior of solutions to defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the presence of a time dependent external potential. The main assumption on the potential is that it grows at most quadratically in space, uniformly with respect to the time variable. We show a general exponential control of first order derivatives and momenta, which yields a double exponential bound for higher Sobolev norms and momenta. On the other hand, we show that if the potential is an isotropic harmonic potential with a time dependent frequency which decays sufficiently fast, then Sobolev norms are bounded, and momenta grow at most polynomially in time, because the potential becomes negligible for large time: there is scattering, even though the potential is unbounded in space for fixed time.

On Fourier time-splitting methods for nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the semi-classical limit

We prove an error estimate for a Lie-Trotter splitting operator associated to the Schrodinger-Poisson equation in the semiclassical regime, when the WKB approximation is valid. In finite time, and so long as the solution to a compressible Euler-Poisson equation is smooth, the error between the numerical solution and the exact solution is controlled in Sobolev spaces, in a suitable phase/amplitude representation. As a corollary, we infer the numerical convergence of the quadratic observables with a time step independent of the Planck constant. A similar result is established for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the weakly nonlinear regime.

On nonlinear Schrodinger type equations with nonlinear damping

We consider equations of nonlinear Schrodinger type augmented by nonlinear damping terms. We show that nonlinear damping prevents finite time blow-up in several situations, which we describe. We also prove that the presence of a quadratic confinement in all spatial directions drives the solution of our model to zero for large time. In the case without external potential we prove that the solution may not go to zero for large time due to (non-trivial) scattering.

An asymptotic preserving scheme based on a new formulation for NLS in the semiclassical limit

We consider the semiclassical limit for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We introduce a phase/amplitude representation given by a system similar to the hydrodynamical formulation, whose novelty consists in including some asymptotically vanishing viscosity. We prove that the system is always locally well-posed in a class of Sobolev spaces, and globally well-posed for a fixed positive Planck constant in the one-dimensional case. We propose a second order numerical scheme which is asymptotic preserving. Before singularities appear in the limiting Euler equation, we recover the quadratic physical observables as well as the wave function with mesh size and time step independent of the Planck constant. This approach is also well suited to the linear Schrodinger equation.

preprint2012arXiv

Nonlinear Schrodinger equation and frequency saturation

We propose an approach that permits to avoid instability phenomena for the nonlinear Schrodinger equations. We show that by approximating the solution in a suitable way, relying on a frequency cut-off, global well-posedness is obtained in any Sobolev space with nonnegative regularity. The error between the exact solution and its approximation can be measured according to the regularity of the exact solution, with different accuracy according to the cases considered.

On the Cauchy problem for Hartree equation in the Wiener algebra

We consider the mass-subcritical Hartree equation with a homogeneous kernel, in the space of square integrable functions whose Fourier transform is integrable. We prove a global well-posedness result in this space. On the other hand, we show that the Cauchy problem is not even locally well-posed if we simply work in the space of functions whose Fourier transform is integrable. Similar results are proven when the kernel is not homogeneous, and is such that its Fourier transform belongs to some Lebesgue space.

Interaction of coherent states for Hartree equations

We consider the Hartree equation with a smooth kernel and an external potential, in the semiclassical regime. We analyze the propagation of two initial wave packets, and show different possible effects of the interaction, according to the size of the nonlinearity in terms of the semiclassical parameter. We show three different sorts of nonlinear phenomena. In each case, the structure of the wave as a sum of two coherent states is preserved. However, the envelope and the center (in phase space) of these two wave packets are affected by nonlinear interferences, which are described precisely.

Nonlinear dynamics of semiclassical coherent states in periodic potentials

We consider nonlinear Schrodinger equations with either local or nonlocal nonlinearities. In addition, we include periodic potentials as used, for example, in matter wave experiments in optical lattices. By considering the corresponding semiclassical scaling regime, we construct asymptotic solutions, which are concentrated both in space and in frequency around the effective semiclassical phase-space flow induced by Bloch's spectral problem. The dynamics of these generalized coherent states is governed by a nonlinear Schrodinger model with effective mass. In the case of nonlocal nonlinearities we establish a novel averaging type result in the critical case.

preprint2011arXiv

On Schrodinger equations with modified dispersion

We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a modified spatial dispersion, given either by an homogeneous Fourier multiplier, or by a bounded Fourier multiplier. Arguments based on ordinary differential equations yield ill-posedness results which are sometimes sharp. When the Fourier multiplier is bounded, we infer that no Strichartz-type estimate improving on Sobolev embedding is available. Finally, we show that when the symbol is bounded, the Cauchy problem may be ill-posed in the case of critical regularity, with arbitrarily small initial data. The same is true when the symbol is homogeneous of degree one, where scaling arguments may not even give the right critical value.

preprint2011arXiv

Semiclassical wave packet dynamics for Hartree equations

We study the propagation of wave packets for nonlinear nonlocal Schrodinger equations in the semi-classical limit. When the kernel is smooth, we construct approximate solutions for the wave functions in subcritical, critical and supercritical cases (in terms of the size of the initial data). The validity of the approximation is proved up to Ehrenfest time. For homogeneous kernels, we establish similar results in subcritical and critical cases. Nonlinear superposition principle for two nonlinear wave packets is also considered.

preprint2011arXiv

Semiclassical wave packet dynamics in Schrodinger equations with periodic potentials

We consider semiclassically scaled Schrodinger equations with an external potential and a highly oscillatory periodic potential. We construct asymptotic solutions in the form of semiclassical wave packets. These solutions are concentrated (both, in space and in frequency) around the effective semiclassical phase-space flow obtained by Peierl's substitution, and involve a slowly varying envelope whose dynamics is governed by a homogenized Schrodinger equation with time-dependent effective mass. The corresponding adiabatic decoupling of the slow and fast degrees of freedom is shown to be valid up to Ehrenfest time scales.

A Nonlinear Adiabatic Theorem for Coherent States

We consider the propagation of wave packets for a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a matrix-valued potential, in the semi-classical limit. For an initial coherent state polarized along some eigenvector, we prove that the nonlinear evolution preserves the separation of modes, in a scaling such that nonlinear effects are critical (the envelope equation is nonlinear). The proof relies on a fine geometric analysis of the role of spectral projectors, which is compatible with the treatment of nonlinearities. We also prove a nonlinear superposition principle for these adiabatic wave packets.

An asymptotic preserving approach for nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the semiclassical limit

We study numerically the semiclassical limit for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation thanks to a modification of the Madelung transform due to E.Grenier. This approach is naturally asymptotic preserving, and allows for the presence of vacuum. Even if the mesh size and the time step do not depend on the Planck constant, we recover the position and current densities in the semiclassical limit, with a numerical rate of convergence in accordance with the theoretical results, before shocks appear in the limiting Euler equation. By using simple projections, the mass and the momentum of the solution are well preserved by the numerical scheme, while the variation of the energy is not negligible numerically. Experiments suggest that beyond the critical time for the Euler equation, Grenier's approach yields smooth but highly oscillatory terms.

Finite time extinction by nonlinear damping for Schrodinger equation

We consider the Schrodinger equation on a compact manifold, in the presence of a nonlinear damping term, which is homogeneous and sublinear. For initial data in the energy space, we construct a weak solution, defined for all positive time, which is shown to be unique. In the one-dimensional case, we show that it becomes zero in finite time. In the two and three-dimensional cases, we prove the same result under the assumption of extra regularity on the initial datum.

Geometric optics and instability for NLS and Davey-Stewartson models

We study the interaction of (slowly modulated) high frequency waves for multi-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gauge invariant power-law nonlinearities and non-local perturbations. The model includes the Davey--Stewartson system in its elliptic-elliptic and hyperbolic-elliptic variant. Our analysis reveals a new localization phenomenon for non-local perturbations in the high frequency regime and allows us to infer strong instability results on the Cauchy problem in negative order Sobolev spaces, where we prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity by a constructive approach.

preprint2010arXiv

Minimal blow-up solutions to the mass-critical inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the mass-critical focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the presence of an external potential, when the nonlinearity is inhomogeneous. We show that if the inhomogeneous factor in front of the nonlinearity is sufficiently flat at a critical point, then there exists a solution which blows up in finite time with the maximal (unstable) rate at this point. In the case where the critical point is a maximum, this solution has minimal mass among the blow-up solutions. As a corollary, we also obtain unstable blow-up solutions of the mass-critical Schrodinger equation on some surfaces. The proof is based on properties of the linearized operator around the ground state, and on a full use of the invariances of the equation with an homogeneous nonlinearity and no potential, via time-dependent modulations.

preprint2010arXiv

Nonlinear Schrodinger equation with time dependent potential

We prove a global well-posedness result for defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equations with time dependent potential. We then focus on time dependent harmonic potentials. This aspect is motivated by Physics (Bose--Einstein condensation), and appears also as a preparation for the analysis of the propagation of wave packets in a nonlinear context. The main aspect considered here is the growth of high Sobolev norms of the solution.

preprint2009arXiv

Multiphase weakly nonlinear geometric optics for Schrodinger equations

We describe and rigorously justify the nonlinear interaction of highly oscillatory waves in nonlinear Schrodinger equations, posed on Euclidean space or on the torus. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution, but does not alter the rapid oscillations. We consider initial states which are superpositions of slowly modulated plane waves, and use the framework of Wiener algebras. A detailed analysis of the corresponding nonlinear wave mixing phenomena is given, including a geometric interpretation on the resonance structure for cubic nonlinearities. As an application, we recover and extend some instability results for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the torus in negative order Sobolev spaces.

preprint2009arXiv

Nonlinear coherent states and Ehrenfest time for Schrodinger equation

We consider the propagation of wave packets for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, in the semi-classical limit. We establish the existence of a critical size for the initial data, in terms of the Planck constant: if the initial data are too small, the nonlinearity is negligible up to the Ehrenfest time. If the initial data have the critical size, then at leading order the wave function propagates like a coherent state whose envelope is given by a nonlinear equation, up to a time of the same order as the Ehrenfest time. We also prove a nonlinear superposition principle for these nonlinear wave packets.

preprint2007arXiv

On the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces for nonlinear Schrodinger equations with potential

We consider the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the presence of a smooth, possibly unbounded, potential. No assumption is made on the sign of the potential. If the potential grows at most linearly at infinity, we construct solutions in Sobolev spaces (without weight), locally in time. Under some natural assumptions, we prove that the $H^1$-solutions are global in time. On the other hand, if the potential has a super-linear growth, then the Sobolev regularity of positive order is lost instantly, not matter how large it is, unless the initial datum decays sufficiently fast at infinity.

preprint2007arXiv

On the instability for the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We study the flow map associated to the cubic Schrodinger equation in space dimension at least three. We consider initial data of arbitrary size in $H^s$, where $0<s<s_c$, $s_c$ the critical index, and perturbations in $H^\si$, where $\si<s_c$ is independent of $s$. We show an instability mechanism in some Sobolev spaces of order smaller than $s$. The analysis relies on two features of super-critical geometric optics: creation of oscillation, and ghost effect.

preprint2007arXiv

On the wave operators for the critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We prove that for the mass critical nonlinear Schrodinger equations, the wave operators and their inverse are related explicitly in terms of the Fourier transform. We discuss some consequences of this property. In the one-dimensional case, we show a precise similarity between the mass critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation and a nonlinear Schrodinger equation of derivative type.

preprint2007arXiv

Semi-classical Schrodinger equations with harmonic potential and nonlinear perturbation

Solutions of semi-classical Schrodinger equation with isotropic harmonic potential focus periodically in time. We study the perturbation of this equation by a nonlinear term. If the scaling of this perturbation is critical, each focus crossing is described by a nonlinear scattering operator, which is therefore iterated as many times as the solution passes through a focus. The study of this nonlinear problem is made possible by the introduction of two operators well adapted to Schrodinger equations with harmonic potential, and by suitable Strichartz inequalities.

WKB analysis for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and instability results

For the semi-classical limit of the cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with an external potential, we explain the notion of criticality before a caustic is formed. In the sub-critical and critical cases, we justify the WKB approximation. In the super-critical case, the WKB analysis provides a new phenomenon for the (classical) cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which can be compared to the loss of regularity established for the nonlinear wave equation by G. Lebeau. We also show some instabilities at the semi-classical level.

Monotonicity properties of blow-up time for nonlinear Schrödinger equation: numerical tests

We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases. We investigate numerically the dependence of the blow-up time on a parameter in three cases: dependence upon the coupling constant, when the initial data are fixed; dependence upon the strength of a quadratic oscillation in the initial data when the equation and the initial profile are fixed; finally, dependence upon a damping factor when the initial data are fixed. It turns out that in most situations monotonicity in the evolution of the blow-up time does not occur. In the case of quadratic oscillations in the initial data, with critical nonlinearity, monotonicity holds; this is proven analytically.

preprint2006arXiv

Scattering theory for radial nonlinear Schrödinger equations on hyperbolic space

We study the long time behavior of radial solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations on hyperbolic space. We show that the usual distinction between short range and long range nonlinearity is modified: the geometry of the hyperbolic space makes every power-like nonlinearity short range. The proofs rely on weighted Strichartz estimates, which imply Strichartz estimates for a broader family of admissible pairs, and on Morawetz type inequalities. The latter are established without symmetry assumptions.

Semi-classical limit of Schrodinger-Poisson equations in space dimension at least 3

We prove the existence of solutions to the Schrodinger-Poisson system on a time interval independent of the Planck constant, when the doping profile does not necessarily decrease at infinity, in the presence of a subquadratic external potential. The lack of integrability of the doping profile is resolved by working in Zhidkov spaces, in space dimension at least three. We infer that the main quadratic quantities (position density and modified momentum density) converge strongly as the Planck constant goes to zero. When the doping profile is integrable, we prove pointwise convergence.

preprint2006arXiv

WKB analysis for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with potential

We justify the WKB analysis for the semiclassical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a subquadratic potential. This concerns subcritical, critical, and supercritical cases as far as the geometrical optics method is concerned. In the supercritical case, this extends a previous result by E. Grenier; we also have to restrict to nonlinearities which are defocusing and cubic at the origin, but besides subquadratic potentials, we consider initial phases which may be unbounded. For this, we construct solutions for some compressible Euler equations with unbounded source term and unbounded initial velocity.
