On a dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model for exciton-polariton condensates

We study a generalized dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model arising in the description of exciton-polariton condensates. We derive global in-time existence results and various a-priori estimates for this model posed on the one-dimensional torus. Moreover, we analyze in detail the long-time behavior of spatially homogenous solutions and their respective steady states and present numerical simulations in the case of more general initial data. We also study the convergence to the corresponding adiabatic regime, which results in a single damped-driven Gross-Pitaveskii equation.

Global attractor for a Ginzburg-Landau type model of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the long time behavior of solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equation arising in the description of trapped rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The equation can be seen as a hybrid between the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions in the physical energy space and establish the existence of a global attractor within the associated dynamics. We also obtain basic structural properties of the attractor and an estimate on its Hausdorff and fractal dimensions.

Dimension reduction for rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with anisotropic confinement

We consider the three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation arising in the description of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates and study the corresponding scaling limit of strongly anisotropic confinement potentials. The resulting effective equations in one or two spatial dimensions, respectively, are rigorously obtained as special cases of an averaged three dimensional limit model. In the particular case where the rotation axis is not parallel to the strongly confining direction the resulting limiting model(s) include a negative, and thus, purely repulsive quadratic potential, which is not present in the original equation and which can be seen as an effective centrifugal force counteracting the confinement.

Weakly nonlinear time-adiabatic theory

We revisit the time-adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics and show that it can be extended to weakly nonlinear situations, that is to nonlinear Schroedinger equations in which either the nonlinear coupling constant or, equivalently, the solution is asymptotically small. To this end, a notion of criticality is introduced at which the linear bound states stay adiabatically stable, but nonlinear effects start to show up at leading order in the form of a slowly varying nonlinear phase modulation. In addition, we prove that in the same regime a class of nonlinear bound states also stays adiabatically stable, at least in terms of spectral projections.

Dispersive blow up for nonlinear Schroedinger equations revisited

The possibility of finite-time, dispersive blow up for nonlinear equations of Schroedinger type is revisited. This mathematical phenomena is one of the possible explanations for oceanic and optical rogue waves. In dimension one, the possibility of dispersive blow up for nonlinear Schroedinger equations already appears in [9]. In the present work, the existing results are extended in several ways. In one direction, the theory is broadened to include the Davey-Stewartson and Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In another, dispersive blow up is shown to obtain for nonlinear Schroedinger equations in spatial dimensions larger than one and for more general power-law nonlinearities. As a by-product of our analysis, a sharp global smoothing estimate for the integral term appearing in Duhamel's formula is obtained.

On the classical limit of a time-dependent self-consistent field system: analysis and computation

We consider a coupled system of Schrödinger equations, arising in quantum mechanics via the so-called time-dependent self-consistent field method. Using Wigner transformation techniques we study the corresponding classical limit dynamics in two cases. In the first case, the classical limit is only taken in one of the two equations, leading to a mixed quantum-classical model which is closely connected to the well-known Ehrenfest method in molecular dynamics. In the second case, the classical limit of the full system is rigorously established, resulting in a system of coupled Vlasov-type equations. In the second part of our work, we provide a numerical study of the coupled semi-classically scaled Schrödinger equations and of the mixed quantum-classical model obtained via Ehrenfest's method. A second order (in time) method is introduced for each case. We show that the proposed methods allow time steps independent of the semi-classical parameter(s) while still capturing the correct behavior of physical observables. It also becomes clear that the order of accuracy of our methods can be improved in a straightforward way.

On nonlinear Schrodinger type equations with nonlinear damping

We consider equations of nonlinear Schrodinger type augmented by nonlinear damping terms. We show that nonlinear damping prevents finite time blow-up in several situations, which we describe. We also prove that the presence of a quadratic confinement in all spatial directions drives the solution of our model to zero for large time. In the case without external potential we prove that the solution may not go to zero for large time due to (non-trivial) scattering.

A Bloch decomposition based split-step pseudo spectral method for quantum dynamics with periodic potentials

We present a new numerical method for accurate computations of solutions to (linear) one dimensional Schrödinger equations with periodic potentials. This is a prominent model in solid state physics where we also allow for perturbations by non-periodic potentials describing external electric fields. Our approach is based on the classical Bloch decomposition method which allows to diagonalize the periodic part of the Hamiltonian operator. Hence, the dominant effects from dispersion and periodic lattice potential are computed together, while the non-periodic potential acts only as a perturbation. Because the split-step communicator error between the periodic and non-periodic parts is relatively small, the step size can be chosen substantially larger than for the traditional splitting of the dispersion and potential operators. Indeed it is shown by the given examples, that our method is unconditionally stable and more efficient than the traditional split-step pseudo spectral schemes. To this end a particular focus is on the semiclassical regime, where the new algorithm naturally incorporates the adiabatic splitting of slow and fast degrees of freedom.

A time-splitting spectral scheme for the Maxwell-Dirac system

We present a time-splitting spectral scheme for the Maxwell-Dirac system and similar time-splitting methods for the corresponding asymptotic problems in the semi-classical and the non-relativistic regimes. The scheme for the Maxwell-Dirac system conserves the Lorentz gauge condition, is unconditionally stable and highly efficient as our numerical examples show. In particular we focus in our examples on the creation of positronic modes in the semi-classical regime and on the electron-positron interaction in the non-relativistic regime. Furthermore, in the non-relativistic regime, our numerical method exhibits uniform convergence in the small parameter $\dt$, which is the ratio of the characteristic speed and the speed of light.

Ground state properties of graphene in Hartree-Fock theory

We study the Hartree-Fock approximation of graphene in infinite volume, with instantaneous Coulomb interactions. First we construct its translation-invariant ground state and we recover the well-known fact that, due to the exchange term, the effective Fermi velocity is logarithmically divergent at zero momentum. In a second step we prove the existence of a ground state in the presence of local defects and we discuss some properties of the linear response to an external electric field. All our results are non perturbative.

On the dynamics of Bohmian measures

The present work is devoted to the study of dynamical features of Bohmian measures, recently introduced by the authors. We rigorously prove that for sufficiently smooth wave functions the corresponding Bohmian measure furnishes a distributional solution of a nonlinear Vlasov-type equation. Moreover, we study the associated defect measures appearing in the classical limit. In one space dimension, this yields a new connection between mono- kinetic Wigner and Bohmian measures. In addition, we shall study the dynamics of Bohmian measures associated to so-called semi-classical wave packets. For these type of wave functions, we prove local in-measure convergence of a rescaled sequence of Bohmian trajectories towards the classical Hamiltonian flow on phase space. Finally, we construct an example of wave functions whose limiting Bohmian measure is not mono-kinetic but nevertheless equals the associated Wigner measure.

Optimal bilinear control of Gross-Pitaevskii equations

A mathematical framework for optimal bilinear control of nonlinear Schrödinger equations of Gross-Pitaevskii type arising in the description of Bose-Einstein condensates is presented. The obtained results generalize earlier efforts found in the literature in several aspects. In particular, the cost induced by the physical work load over the control process is taken into account rather then often used $L^2$- or $H^1$-norms for the cost of the control action. Well-posedness of the problem and existence of an optimal control is proven. In addition, the first order optimality system is rigorously derived. Also a numerical solution method is proposed, which is based on a Newton type iteration, and used to solve several coherent quantum control problems.

The Wigner-Fokker-Planck equation: Stationary states and large-time behavior

We consider the linear Wigner-Fokker-Planck equation subject to confining potentials which are smooth perturbations of the harmonic oscillator potential. For a certain class of perturbations we prove that the equation admits a unique stationary solution in a weighted Sobolev space. A key ingredient of the proof is a new result on the existence of spectral gaps for Fokker-Planck type operators in certain weighted $L^2$-spaces. In addition we show that the steady state corresponds to a positive density matrix operator with unit trace and that the solutions of the time-dependent problem converge towards the steady state with an exponential rate.

Well-Posedness and averaging of NLS with time-periodic dispersion management

We consider the Cauchy problem for dispersion managed nonlinear Schroedinger equations, where the dispersion map is assumed to be periodic and piecewise constant in time. We establish local and global well-posedness results and the possibility of finite time blow-up. In addition, we shall study the scaling limit of fast dispersion management and establish convergence to an effective model with averaged dispersion.

Nonlinear dynamics of semiclassical coherent states in periodic potentials

We consider nonlinear Schrodinger equations with either local or nonlocal nonlinearities. In addition, we include periodic potentials as used, for example, in matter wave experiments in optical lattices. By considering the corresponding semiclassical scaling regime, we construct asymptotic solutions, which are concentrated both in space and in frequency around the effective semiclassical phase-space flow induced by Bloch's spectral problem. The dynamics of these generalized coherent states is governed by a nonlinear Schrodinger model with effective mass. In the case of nonlocal nonlinearities we establish a novel averaging type result in the critical case.

Semiclassical wave packet dynamics in Schrodinger equations with periodic potentials

We consider semiclassically scaled Schrodinger equations with an external potential and a highly oscillatory periodic potential. We construct asymptotic solutions in the form of semiclassical wave packets. These solutions are concentrated (both, in space and in frequency) around the effective semiclassical phase-space flow obtained by Peierl's substitution, and involve a slowly varying envelope whose dynamics is governed by a homogenized Schrodinger equation with time-dependent effective mass. The corresponding adiabatic decoupling of the slow and fast degrees of freedom is shown to be valid up to Ehrenfest time scales.

Existence of solitary waves in dipolar quantum gases

We study a nonlinear Schroedinger equation arising in the mean-field description of dipolar quantum gases. Under the assumption of sufficiently strong dipolar interactions, the existence of standing waves, and hence solitons, is proved together with some of their properties. This gives a rigorous argument for the possible existence of solitary waves in Bose-Einstein condensates, which originate solely due to the dipolar interaction between the particles.

Geometric optics and instability for NLS and Davey-Stewartson models

We study the interaction of (slowly modulated) high frequency waves for multi-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations with gauge invariant power-law nonlinearities and non-local perturbations. The model includes the Davey--Stewartson system in its elliptic-elliptic and hyperbolic-elliptic variant. Our analysis reveals a new localization phenomenon for non-local perturbations in the high frequency regime and allows us to infer strong instability results on the Cauchy problem in negative order Sobolev spaces, where we prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity by a constructive approach.

On the Cauchy Problem for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with rotation

We consider the Cauchy problem for (energy-subcritical) nonlinear Schrödinger equations with sub-quadratic external potentials and an additional angular momentum rotation term. This equation is a well-known model for superfluid quantum gases in rotating traps. We prove global existence (in the energy space) for defocusing nonlinearities without any restriction on the rotation frequency, generalizing earlier results given in [11,12]. Moreover, we find that the rotation term has a considerable influence in proving finite time blow-up in the focusing case.

Thermal effects in gravitational Hartree systems

We consider the non-relativistic Hartree model in the gravitational case, i.e. with attractive Coulomb-Newton interaction. For a given mass, we construct stationary states with non-zero temperature by minimizing the corresponding free energy functional. It is proved that minimizers exist if and only if the temperature of the system is below a certain threshold(possibly infinite), which itself depends on the specific choice of the entropy functional. We also investigate whether the corresponding minimizers are mixed or pure quantum states and characterize a positive critical temperature above which mixed states appear.

preprint2009arXiv

Multiphase weakly nonlinear geometric optics for Schrodinger equations

We describe and rigorously justify the nonlinear interaction of highly oscillatory waves in nonlinear Schrodinger equations, posed on Euclidean space or on the torus. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution, but does not alter the rapid oscillations. We consider initial states which are superpositions of slowly modulated plane waves, and use the framework of Wiener algebras. A detailed analysis of the corresponding nonlinear wave mixing phenomena is given, including a geometric interpretation on the resonance structure for cubic nonlinearities. As an application, we recover and extend some instability results for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the torus in negative order Sobolev spaces.

Rigorous derivation of the hydrodynamical equations for rotating superfluids

Using a modified WKB approach, we present a rigorous semi-classical analysis for solutions of nonlinear Schroedinger equations with rotational forcing. This yields a rigorous justification for the hydrodynamical system of rotating superfluids. In particular it is shown that global-in-time semi-classical convergence holds whenever the limiting hydrodynamical system has global smooth solutions and we also discuss the semi-classical dynamics of several physical quantities describing rotating superfluids.
