Asymptotic behavior of nonlocal bistable reaction-diffusion equations

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of nonlocal bistable reaction-diffusion equations starting from compactly supported initial conditions. Depending on the relationship between the nonlinearity, the interaction kernel and the diffusion coefficient, we show that the solutions can either: propagate, go extinct or remain pinned. We especially focus on the latter regime where solutions are pinned by thoroughly studying discontinuous ground state solutions of the problem for a specific interaction kernel serving as a case study. We also present a detailed numerical analysis of the problem.

Domain decomposition algorithms for the two dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and simulation of Bose-Einstein condensates

In this paper, we apply the optimized Schwarz method to the two dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and extend this method to the simulation of Bose-Einstein condensates (Gross-Pitaevskii equation). We propose an extended version of the Schwartz method by introducing a preconditioned algorithm. The two algorithms are studied numerically. The experiments show that the preconditioned algorithm improves the convergence rate and reduces the computation time. In addition, the classical Robin condition and a newly constructed absorbing condition are used as transmission conditions.

Domain decomposition algorithms for two dimensional linear Schrödinger equation

This paper deals with two domain decomposition methods for two dimensional linear Schr{ö}dinger equation, the Schwarz waveform relaxation method and the domain decomposition in space method. After presenting the classical algorithms, we propose a new algorithm for the free Schr{ö}dinger equation and a preconditioned algorithm for the general Schr{ö}dinger equation. These algorithms are studied numerically, which shows that the two new algorithms could accelerate the convergence and reduce the computation time. Besides the traditional Robin transmission condition, we also propose to use a newly constructed absorbing condition as the transmission condition.

Excitation of radial collective modes in a quantum dot: Beyond linear response

We compare the response of five different models of two interacting electrons in a quantum dot to an external short lived radial excitation that is strong enough to excite the system well beyond the linear response regime. The models considered describe the Coulomb interaction between the electrons in different ways ranging from mean-field approaches to configuration interaction (CI) models, where the two-electron Hamiltonian is diagonalized in a large truncated Fock space. The radially symmetric excitation is selected in order to severely put to test the different approaches to describe the interaction and correlations of an electron system in a nonequilibrium state. As can be expected for the case of only two electrons none of the mean-field models can in full details reproduce the results obtained by the CI model. Nonetheless, some linear and nonlinear characteristics are reproduced reasonably well. All the models show activation of an increasing number of collective modes as the strength of the excitation is increased. By varying slightly the confinement potential of the dot we observe how sensitive the properties of the excitation spectrum are to the Coulomb interaction and its correlation effects. In order to approach closer the question of nonlinearity we solve one of the mean-field models directly in a nonlinear fashion without resorting to iterations.

Computational methods for the dynamics of the nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations

In this paper, we begin with the nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation (NLSE/GPE) for modeling Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and nonlinear optics as well as other applications, and discuss their dynamical properties ranging from time reversible, time transverse invariant, mass and energy conservation, dispersion relation to soliton solutions. Then, we review and compare different numerical methods for solving the NLSE/GPE including finite difference time domain methods and time-splitting spectral method, and discuss different absorbing boundary conditions. In addition, these numerical methods are extended to the NLSE/GPE with damping terms and/or an angular momentum rotation term as well as coupled NLSEs/GPEs. Finally, applications to simulate a quantized vortex lattice dynamics in a rotating BEC are reported.

An asymptotic preserving scheme based on a new formulation for NLS in the semiclassical limit

We consider the semiclassical limit for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We introduce a phase/amplitude representation given by a system similar to the hydrodynamical formulation, whose novelty consists in including some asymptotically vanishing viscosity. We prove that the system is always locally well-posed in a class of Sobolev spaces, and globally well-posed for a fixed positive Planck constant in the one-dimensional case. We propose a second order numerical scheme which is asymptotic preserving. Before singularities appear in the limiting Euler equation, we recover the quadratic physical observables as well as the wave function with mesh size and time step independent of the Planck constant. This approach is also well suited to the linear Schrodinger equation.

Transparent boundary conditions for locally perturbed infinite hexagonal periodic media

In this paper, we propose a strategy to determine the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator for infinite, lossy and locally perturbed hexagonal periodic media. We obtain a factorization of this operator involving two non local operators. The first one is a DtN type operator and corresponds to a half-space problem. The second one is a Dirichlet-to-Dirichlet (DtD) type operator related to the symmetry properties of the problem. The half-space DtN operator is characterized via Floquet-Bloch transform, a family of elementary strip problems and a family of stationary Riccati equations. The DtD operator is the solution of an affine operator valued equation which can be reformulated as a non standard integral equation.

Monotonicity properties of blow-up time for nonlinear Schrödinger equation: numerical tests

We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases. We investigate numerically the dependence of the blow-up time on a parameter in three cases: dependence upon the coupling constant, when the initial data are fixed; dependence upon the strength of a quadratic oscillation in the initial data when the equation and the initial profile are fixed; finally, dependence upon a damping factor when the initial data are fixed. It turns out that in most situations monotonicity in the evolution of the blow-up time does not occur. In the case of quadratic oscillations in the initial data, with critical nonlinearity, monotonicity holds; this is proven analytically.
