On some ergodicity properties for time inhomogeneous Markov processes with $T$-periodic semigroup

We consider a time inhomogeneous strong Markov process $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ taking values in a Polish state space whose semigroup has a $T$-periodic structure. We give simple conditions which imply ergodicity of the grid chain $(ξ_{kT})_{k\in \mathbb{N}_0}$ In case of $d$-dimensional possibly degenerate diffusions, the conditions are stated in terms of drift and diffusion coefficient of the process.

Estimating a periodicity parameter in the drift of a time inhomogeneous diffusion

We consider a diffusion $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ whose drift contains some deterministic periodic signal. Its shape being fixed and known, up to scaling in time, the periodicity of the signal is the unknown parameter $\vartheta$ of interest. We consider sequences of local models at $\vartheta$, corresponding to continuous observation of the process $ξ$ on the time interval $[0,n]$ as $n\to\infty$, with suitable choice of local scale at $\vartheta$. Our tools --under an ergodicity condition-- are path segments of $ξ$ corresponding to the period $\vartheta$, and limit theorems for certain functionals of the process $ξ$ which are not additive functionals. When the signal is smooth, with local scale $n^{-3/2}$ at $\vartheta$, we have local asymptotic normality (LAN) in the sense of Le Cam (1969). When the signal has a finite number of discontinuities, with local scale $n^{-2}$ at $\vartheta$, we obtain a limit experiment of different type, studied by Ibragimov and Khasminskii (1981), where smoothness of the parametrization (in the sense of Hellinger distance) is Hölder $\frac12$.

Estimating discontinuous periodic signals in a non-time homogeneous diffusion process

We consider a diffusion $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ with some $T$-periodic time dependent input term contained in the drift: under an unknown parameter $\vth\inΘ$, some discontinuity - an additional periodic signal - occurs at times $kT{+}\vth$, $k\in\bbn$. Assuming positive Harris recurrence of $(ξ_{kT})_{k\in\bbn_0}$ and exploiting the periodicity structure, we prove limit theorems for certain martingales and functionals of the process $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$. They allow to consider the statistical model parametrized by $\vth\inΘ$ locally in small neighbourhoods of some fixed $\vth$, with radius $1/n$ as $\nto$. We prove convergence of local models to a limit experiment studied by Ibragimov and Khasminskii [IH 81] and discuss the behaviour of estimators under contiguous alternatives.

On LAN for parametrized continuous periodic signals in a time inhomogeneous diffusion

We consider a diffusion $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ whose drift involves a $T$-periodic signal. $T$ is fixed and known, whereas the signal depends on an unknown $d$-dimensional parameter $\vartheta\inΘ$. Assuming positive Harris recurrence of the grid chain $(ξ_{kT})_{k\in\mathbb{N}_0}$ and exploiting the periodic structure of the semigroup, we work with path segments and limit theorems for certain functionals (more general than additive functionals) of the process to prove local asymptotic normality (LAN). Then we consider several estimators for the unknown parameter.

To which extent is the membrane potential in a neuron between successive spikes adequately modelled by a (continuous) semimartingale?

We consider $p$-variations in some membrane potential data --viewed as a function of the step size in case where $p$ is fixed, or viewed as a function of $p$ in case where the step size is fixed-- and compare their shape with results in Ait-Sahalia and Jacod (2009) which do hold for general semimartingales. We obtain the following conclusion: in non- or very rarely spiking cases the membrane potential behaves as a semimartingale, in some cases as a semimartingale with jumps. Once the neuron is spiking, a semimartingale modelization is no longer adequate for the membrane potential between successive spikes, even if interspike intervals are relatively long.
