A Sieve M-Estimator for Entropic Optimal Transport

Entropically regularized optimal transport between probability measures supported on compact subsets of Euclidean space admits a representation as an information projection under moment inequality constraints. Exploiting this structure, I develop a sieve-based approximation of the Fenchel dual, yielding a sequence of finite-dimensional convex programs whose sample analogues provide tractable estimators of the regularized optimal value and associated dual optimizers. Under minimal assumptions--compact support and continuity of the cost function--I establish almost sure consistency of these estimators. I further derive finite-sample bounds for the estimation error of the optimal value, featuring only logarithmic dependence on sieve complexity, and obtain asymptotic stochastic bounds characterized by suprema of centered Gaussian processes. The results furnish general statistical guarantees for sieve-based estimation of entropic optimal transport and apply to settings not covered by existing theory for the empirical Sinkhorn divergence and other sieve-based methods.

The Impossibility of Testing for Dependence Using Kendall's $τ$ Under Missing Data of Unknown Form

This paper discusses the statistical inference problem associated with testing for dependence between two continuous random variables using Kendall's $τ$ in the context of the missing data problem. We prove the worst-case identified set for this measure of association always includes zero. The consequence of this result is that robust inference for dependence using Kendall's $τ$, where robustness is with respect to the form of the missingness-generating process, is impossible.

Inference for Moment Inequalities: A Constrained Moment Selection Procedure

Inference in models where the parameter is defined by moment inequalities is of interest in many areas of economics. This paper develops a new method for improving the performance of generalized moment selection (GMS) testing procedures in finite-samples. The method modifies GMS tests by tilting the empirical distribution in its moment selection step by an amount that maximizes the empirical likelihood subject to the restrictions of the null hypothesis. We characterize sets of population distributions on which a modified GMS test is (i) asymptotically equivalent to its non-modified version to first-order, and (ii) superior to its non-modified version according to local power when the sample size is large enough. An important feature of the proposed modification is that it remains computationally feasible even when the number of moment inequalities is large. We report simulation results that show the modified tests control size well, and have markedly improved local power over their non-modified counterparts.
