Behavior of a trapezoid-based data acquisition system up to 100 kHz and beyond

In this work, we investigated the ability of a high-purity germanium detector connected to a trapezoid-filter-based data acquisition system to reliably record signals in spite of high sample activities. By activating multiple Na2_{2}CO3_{3} samples with different Na content, we were able to deduce efficiency, resolution and dead time of the system used as a function of the sample activity. Based on the results, we were able to find a setting which allows measurements of event rates up to 35~kHz per readout channel with an energy resolution of 0.3\% at the 2754 keV 24^{24}Na line.

Coulomb dissociation of 20,21^{20,21}N

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role for the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on 20,21^{20,21}N are reported. Relativistic 20,21^{20,21}N ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the 19N(n,γ)20N^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},γ)^{20}\mathrm{N} and 20N(n,γ)21N^{20}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},γ)^{21}\mathrm{N} excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The 19N(n,γ)20N^{19}\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{n},γ)^{20}\mathrm{N} rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T<1T<1\,GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10\,\% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance.

First Measurement of the 96^{96}Ru(p,γγ)97^{97}Rh Cross Section for the p-Process with a Storage Ring

This work presents a direct measurement of the 96^{96}Ru(p,γp, γ)97^{97}Rh cross section via a novel technique using a storage ring, which opens opportunities for reaction measurements on unstable nuclei. A proof-of-principle experiment was performed at the storage ring ESR at GSI in Darmstadt, where circulating 96^{96}Ru ions interacted repeatedly with a hydrogen target. The 96^{96}Ru(p,γp, γ)97^{97}Rh cross section between 9 and 11 MeV has been determined using two independent normalization methods. As key ingredients in Hauser-Feshbach calculations, the γγ-ray strength function as well as the level density model can be pinned down with the measured (p,γp, γ) cross section. Furthermore, the proton optical potential can be optimized after the uncertainties from the γγ-ray strength function and the level density have been removed. As a result, a constrained 96^{96}Ru(p,γp, γ)97^{97}Rh reaction rate over a wide temperature range is recommended for pp-process network calculations.

The Karlsruhe Astrophysical Database of Nucleosynthesis in Stars Project - Status and Prospects

The KADoNiS (Karlsruhe Astrophysical Database of Nucleosynthesis in Stars) project is an astrophysical online database for cross sections relevant for nucleosynthesis in the ss process and the γγ process. The ss-process database (www.kadonis.org) was started in 2005 and is presently facing its 4th update (KADoNiS v1.0). The γγ-process database (KADoNiS-p, www.kadonis.org/pprocess) was recently revised and re-launched in March 2013. Both databases are compilations for experimental cross sections with relevance to heavy ion nucleosynthesis. For the ss process recommended Maxwellian averaged cross sections for kTkT= 5-100~keV are given for more than 360 isotopes between 1^{1}H and 210^{210}Bi. For the γγ-process database all available experimental data from (p,γ),(p,n),(p,α),(α,γ),(α,n)(p,γ), (p,n), (p,α), (α,γ), (α,n), and (α,p)(α,p) reactions between 70^{70}Ge and 209^{209}Bi in or close to the respective Gamow window were collected and can be compared to theoretical predictions. The aim of both databases is a quick and user-friendly access to the available data in the astrophysically relevant energy regions.
