MPGDs for TPCs at future lepton colliders

This submission will focus on advancements and advantages of Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) technologies and their applications to the construction of a dedicated Time Projection Chamber (TPC) that can serve as an excellent main tracker for any multipurpose detector that can be foreseen to operate at a future lepton collider. The first portion of the report will be the executive summary. It will be followed by sections detailing the applications of MPGDs specifically to the construction of the LCTPC for the ILD at ILC, for a possible upgrade of the Belle II detector at SuperKEKB and for the design of a TPC for a detector at CEPC. MPGD technologies offer synergies with other detector R&D and several application domains; a few examples will be provided in the context of the ongoing Snowmass long range planning exercise in the USA. Links to industrial partnership and work with institutions in the USA will be highlighted when appropriate.

Recent Performance Studies of the GEM-based TPC Readout (DESY Module)

For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY and tested at the DESY II Test Beam Facility. After introducing the readout module and the infrastructure at the test beam facility, the performance related to single point and double-hit resolution of three of these modules is presented. This is followed by results on the particle identification capabilities of the system, using the specific energy loss dE/dx, and simulation studies, aimed to investigate and quantify the impact of high granularity on dE/dx resolution. In addition, a new and improved TPC field cage and the LYCORIS Large-Area Silicon-Strip Telescope for the test beam are described. The LYCORIS beam telescope is foreseen to provide a precise reference of the particle trajectory to validate the momentum resolution measured with a large TPC prototype. For this purpose, it is being installed and tested at the test beam facility within the so-called PCMAG (Persistent Current Magnet).

A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

A Novel Self-supporting GEM-based Amplification Structure for a Time Projection Chamber at the ILC

Modern time projection chambers are increasingly based on micro pattern gas detector readout systems. In this paper a self-supporting method used to mount Gas Electron Multiplier foils is presented. It is based on light weight ceramic grids, and promises to cover large readout areas with minimum dead zones and material, while ensuring a flat and mechanically stable mounting. The structure has been tested in a Time Projection Chamber prototype, using cosmic muon tracks. The impact of the mounting structure on the charge measurement, the track reconstruction and the single point resolution is quantified.

Beam Test with a GridGEM TPC Prototype Module

The International Large Detector (ILD) --a detector concept for the International Linear Collider (ILC)-- foresees a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) as its main tracking detector. Currently, the R&D efforts for such a TPC focus on studies using a large prototype that can accommodate up to seven read-out modules which are comparable to the ones that would be used in the final ILD TPC. The DESY TPC group has developed such a module using GEMs for the gas amplification, which are mounted on thin ceramic frames. The module design and first results of a test beam campaign are presented.

A Lightweight Field Cage for a Large TPC Prototype for the ILC

We have developed and constructed the field cage of a prototype Time Projection Chamber for research and development studies for a detector at the International Linear Collider. This prototype has an inner diameter of 72 cm and a length of 61 cm. The design of the field cage wall was optimized for a low material budget of 1.21 % of a radiation length and a drift field homogeneity of Delta(E)/(E) less or equal 10^-4. Since November 2008 the prototype has been part of a comprehensive test beam setup at DESY and used as a test chamber for the development of Micro Pattern Gas Detector based readout devices.
