The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

MPGDs for TPCs at future lepton colliders

This submission will focus on advancements and advantages of Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) technologies and their applications to the construction of a dedicated Time Projection Chamber (TPC) that can serve as an excellent main tracker for any multipurpose detector that can be foreseen to operate at a future lepton collider. The first portion of the report will be the executive summary. It will be followed by sections detailing the applications of MPGDs specifically to the construction of the LCTPC for the ILD at ILC, for a possible upgrade of the Belle II detector at SuperKEKB and for the design of a TPC for a detector at CEPC. MPGD technologies offer synergies with other detector R&D and several application domains; a few examples will be provided in the context of the ongoing Snowmass long range planning exercise in the USA. Links to industrial partnership and work with institutions in the USA will be highlighted when appropriate.

Performance of the GridPix detector quad

A gaseous pixel readout module with four GridPix chips, called the quad, has been developed as a building block for a large time projection chamber readout plane. The quad module has dimensions 39.6 mm $\times$ 28.38 mm and an active surface coverage of 68.9%. The GridPix chip consists of a Timepix3 chip with integrated amplification grid and have a high efficiency to detect single ionisation electrons, which enable to make a precise track position measurement. A quad module was installed in a small time projection chamber and measurements of 2.5 GeV electrons were performed at the ELSA accelerator in Bonn, where a silicon telescope was used to provide a reference track. The error on the track position measurement, both in the pixel plane and drift direction, is dominated by diffusion. The quad was designed to have minimum electrical field inhomogeneities and distortions, achieving systematics of better than 13 $μ$m in the pixel plane. The resolution of the setup is 41 $μ$m, where the total systematic error of the quad detector is 24 $μ$m.

A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

Beam Test with a GridGEM TPC Prototype Module

The International Large Detector (ILD) --a detector concept for the International Linear Collider (ILC)-- foresees a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) as its main tracking detector. Currently, the R&D efforts for such a TPC focus on studies using a large prototype that can accommodate up to seven read-out modules which are comparable to the ones that would be used in the final ILD TPC. The DESY TPC group has developed such a module using GEMs for the gas amplification, which are mounted on thin ceramic frames. The module design and first results of a test beam campaign are presented.

An integrated Micromegas UV-photon detector

Preliminary results of a photon detector combining a Micromegas like multiplier coated with a UV-sensitive CsI photocathode are described. The multiplier is made in a CMOS compatible InGrid technology, which allows to post-process it directly on the surface of an imaging IC. This method is aimed at building light-sensitive imaging detectors where all elements are monolithically integrated. We show that the CsI photocathode deposited in the InGrid mesh does not alter the device performance. Maximum gains of ~6000 were reached in a single-grid element operated in Ar/CH4, with a 2% Ion Back Flow fraction returning to the photocathode.
