muT2-NMR: Micro-Scale Correlation Relaxometry for in-situ High-Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Over the last decade, frequency-domain in-situ high-pressure nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in diamond anvil cells (DACs) has been employed as a structural and electronic probe of condensed matter systems at pressures well into the megabar range. However, extensive spin interactions and sample heterogeneities under pressure often lead to significant spectral overlap, inhibiting independent observation of chemically similar spin sub-species in the same sample. In this work, we introduce a time-domain relaxometry framework specifically suited for DAC experiments, named muT2-NMR. Experimental flexibility and operational robustness are benchmarked on three hydrogen-rich molecular solids at pressures up to 72 GPa. We demonstrate that muT2-NMR can resolve individual molecular subunits in relaxation space, paving the way for novel high-pressure, high-resolution NMR applications in molecular solids.

Pressure driven re-entrant magnetoelectric transition in honeycomb $Fe_{4}Nb_{2}O_{9}$

A detailed high pressure investigation is carried out on $Fe_4Nb_2O_9$ using angle resolved x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. We find a structural transition from the ambient trigonal phase to a monoclinic phase above 8.8 GPa. The structural transition is assumed to be driven by a large distortion of $Nb-O_6$ octahedra as seen from x-ray diffraction analysis and a large pressure dependence of $Nb-O_6$ octahedra breathing Raman mode. Anomalous behaviour of Raman modes and increase in the phonon life time at the phase transition pressure indicate a trigonal paramagnetic phase to a monoclinic antiferromagnetic state above 8.8 GPa. Decrease in the diffusive scattering rate of low frequency electronic contribution contradicts the results of decrease in intensity of high frequency electronic response and excludes the phenomenon of insulator to metal transition. Instead the enhancement of the intensity of the Raman modes till about 8.8 GPa indicate a large change in ferroelectric polarization of the sample indicating pressure induced re-entrant magentoelectric effect in $Fe_4Nb_2O_9$.

Direct Observation of Re-entrant Multiferroic CuO at High Pressures

We have carried out a detailed experimental investigation on CuO using dielectric constant, ac resistance, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures and room temperature. Both dielectric constant and dielectric loss show an anomalous peak in the pressure range 3.4-4 GPa indicating a ferroelectric transition. Raman studies show anomalous behaviour of the Ag mode with a slope change in the mode frequency and a minimum in the mode FWHM at 3.4 GPa indicating a strong spin phonon coupling along [1 0 -1] direction. A step like behaviour in the intensity of the Ag mode is observed at 3.4 GPa, indicating a change in the polarization of the mode. A maximum in the intensity of (2,0,-2)Bragg peak at 3.4 GPa points the occurrence of critical scattering due to emergence of magnetic exchange interaction. All our experimental evidences show to the presence of re-entrant type-II multiferroic behaviour in CuO at about 4 GPa.
