Parton physics of the large-$N_c$ mesons

We initiate the studies on the structural physics of the tower of stable large-$N_c$ mesons through a first computation of the collinear quark-structure of a large-$N_c$ pion using lattice Monte-Carlo methods. We adapt the large-$N_c$ continuum reduction for the determination of meson correlation functions involving the spatially-extended quasi-PDF operators as a perfect strategy to concentrate only on the short perturbative length scales. We find the internal structures of pion in the large-$N_c$ and $N_c=3$ theories to be quite similar. Interestingly, we find hints that even the observed differences could arise to a large extent via the different perturbative QCD evolution in the two theories from similar initial conditions at low factorization scales.

Perturbative computation in a QED$_3$-inspired conformal abelian gauge model on the lattice

We perform perturbative computations in a lattice gauge theory with a conformal measure that is quadratic in a non-compact abelian gauge field and is nonlocal, as inspired by the induced gauge action in massless QED$_3$. In a previous work, we showed that coupling fermion sources to the gauge model led to nontrivial conformal data in the correlation functions of fermion bilinears that are functions of charge $q$ of the fermion. In this paper, we compute such gauge invariant fermionic observables to order $q^2$ in lattice perturbation theory with the same conformal measure. We reproduce the expectations for scalar anomalous dimension from previous estimates in dimensional regularization. We address the issue of the lattice regulator dependence of the amplitudes of correlation functions.

Topological gauge actions on the lattice as Overlap fermion determinants

Overlap fermion on the lattice has been shown to properly reproduce topological aspects of gauge fields. In this paper, we review the derivation of Overlap fermion formalism in a torus of three space-time dimensions. Using the formalism, we show how to use the Overlap fermion determinants in the massless and infinite mass limits to construct different continuum topological gauge actions, such as the level-$k$ Chern-Simons action, ``half-CS" term and the mixed Chern-Simons (BF) coupling, in a gauge-invariant lattice UV regulated manner. Taking special Abelian and non-Abelian background fields, we demonstrate numerically how the lattice formalism beautifully reproduces the continuum expectations, such as the flow of action under large gauge transformations.

Phase diagram of the large $N$ Gross-Neveu model in a finite periodic box

We analyze the Gross-Neveu model in the limit of large number of flavors of massless fermions. We study the phase diagram in a two and three dimensional periodic box at a fixed thermal to spatial aspect ratio, $\fracβ{\ell}$, with a flavor independent chemical potential. We assume the bilinear condensate, when one exists, has a specific momentum in the spatial direction(s). The main known features of the phase diagram in the $\ell\to\infty$ limit of the two dimensional model are also seen on a finite $\ell\timesβ$ torus -- a phase with a homogeneous (zero momentum) condensate; a phase with an inhomogeneous (non-zero momentum) condensate and a phase with no condensate. We observe that the inhomogeneous phase contains several sub-phases characterized by a specific spatial momentum. Unlike the two dimensional model, we do not find evidence for a phase with a inhomogeneous condensate in the three dimensional model.

Absence of bilinear condensate in three-dimensional QED

There are plausibility arguments that QED in three dimensions has a critical number of flavors of massless two-component fermions, below which scale invariance is broken by the presence of bilinear condensate. We present numerical evidences from our lattice simulations using dynamical overlap as well as Wilson-Dirac fermions for the absence of bilinear condensate for any even number of flavors of two-component fermions. Instead, we find evidences for the scale-invariant nature of three-dimensional QED.

No evidence for bilinear condensate in parity-invariant three-dimensional QED with massless fermions

We present our numerical study of three-dimensional QED with 2, 4, 6 and 8 flavors of massless two-component fermions using a parity-preserving lattice regularization with Wilson fermions. We study the behavior of low-lying eigenvalues of the massless improved Wilson-Dirac operator as a function of three-dimensional physical volume, after taking the continuum limit at fixed physical volumes. We find the following evidences against the presence of bilinear condensate: the eigenvalues do not scale as the inverse of the three-dimensional physical volume, and the number variance associated with these eigenvalues do not exhibit ergodic behavior. The inverse participation ratio (IPR) of the associated eigenvectors exhibits a multi-fractal volume scaling. The relation satisfied by number variance and IPR suggests critical behavior.

Scale-invariance of parity-invariant three-dimensional QED

We present numerical evidences using overlap fermions for a scale-invariant behavior of parity-invariant three-dimensional QED with two flavors of massless two-component fermions. Using finite-size scaling of the low-lying eigenvalues of the massless anti-Hermitian overlap Dirac operator, we rule out the presence of bilinear condensate and estimate the mass anomalous dimension. The eigenvectors associated with these low-lying eigenvalues suggest critical behavior in the sense of a metal-insulator transition. We show that there is no mass gap in the scalar and vector correlators in the infinite volume theory. The vector correlator does not acquire an anomalous dimension. The anomalous dimension associated with the long-distance behavior of the scalar correlator is consistent with the mass anomalous dimension.

Phase of the fermion determinant in QED_3 using a gauge invariant lattice regularization

We use canonical formalism to study the fermion determinant in different three dimensional abelian gauge field backgrounds that contain non-zero magnetic and electric flux in order to understand the non-perturbative contributions to the parity-odd and parity-even parts of the phase. We show that a certain phase associated with free fermion propagation along a closed path in a momentum torus is responsible for the parity anomaly in a background with non-zero electric flux. We consider perturbations around backgrounds with non-zero magnetic flux to understand the structure of the parity-breaking perturbative term at finite temperature and mass.

Scale invariant behavior in a large N matrix model

Eigenvalue distributions of properly regularized Wilson loop operators are used to study the transition from ultra-violet (UV) behavior to infra-red (IR) behavior in gauge theories coupled to matter that potentially have an IR fixed point (FP). We numerically demonstrate emergence of scale invariance in a matrix model that describes $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to two flavors of massless adjoint fermions in the large $N$ limit. The eigenvalue distribution of Wilson loops of varying sizes cannot be described by a universal lattice beta-function connecting the UV to the IR.

Correlation between Polyakov loops oriented in two different directions in SU(N) gauge theory on a two dimensional torus

We consider SU(N) gauge theories on a two dimensional torus with finite area, $A$. Let $T_μ(A)$ denote the Polyakov loop operator in the $μ$ direction. Starting from the lattice gauge theory on the torus, we derive a formula for the continuum limit of $\langle g_1(T_1(A)) g_2(T_2(A)) \rangle$ as a function of the area of the torus where $g_1$ and $g_2$ are class functions. We show that there exists a class function $ξ_0$ for SU(2) such that $\langle ξ_0(T_1(A)) ξ_0(T_2(A))\rangle > 1$ for all finite area of the torus with the limit being unity as the area of the torus goes to infinity. Only the trivial representation contributes to $ξ_0$ as $A\to\infty$ whereas all representations become equally important as $A\to 0$.

The equation of state of two dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We study the pressure, $P$, of SU($N$) gauge theory on a two-dimensional torus as a function of area, $A=l/t$. We find a cross-over scale that separates the system on a large circle from a system on a small circle at any finite temperature. The cross-over scale approaches zero with increasing $N$ and the cross-over becomes a first order transition as $N\to\infty$ and $l\to 0$ with the limiting value of $2Pl/(N-1)t$ depending on the fixed value of $Nl$.

Many-flavor Schwinger model at finite chemical potential

We study thermodynamic properties of the Schwinger model on a torus with f flavors of massless fermions and flavor-dependent chemical potentials. Generalizing the two-flavor case, we present a representation of the partition function in the form of a multidimensional theta function and show that the model exhibits a rich phase structure at zero temperature. The different phases, characterized by certain values of the particle numbers, are separated by first-order phase transitions. We work out the phase structure in detail for three and four fermion flavors and conjecture, based on an exploratory investigation of the five, six, and eight flavor case, that the maximal number of coexisting phases at zero temperature grows exponentially with increasing f.

Phase structure of two-dimensional QED at zero temperature with flavor-dependent chemical potentials and the role of multidimensional theta functions

We consider QED on a two-dimensional Euclidean torus with $f$ flavors of massless fermions and flavor-dependent chemical potentials. The dependence of the partition function on the chemical potentials is reduced to a $(2f-2)$-dimensional theta function. At zero temperature, the system can exist in an infinite number of phases characterized by certain values of traceless number densities and separated by first-order phase transitions. Furthermore, there exist many points in the $(f-1)$-dimensional space of traceless chemical potentials where two or three phases can coexist for $f=3$ and two, three, four or six phases can coexist for $f=4$. We conjecture that the maximal number of coexisting phases grows exponentially with increasing $f$.

Weak-coupling analysis of the single-site large-N gauge theory coupled to adjoint fermions

We consider the leading-order expression at weak-coupling for a single-site large-N gauge theory coupled to adjoint fermions. We study the case of overlap and wilson fermions. We extend the theory to real values of the number of fermion flavors and restrict ourselves to asymptotically free theories. Using a four-dimensional density function for the distribution of the eigenvalues of the link variables, we show that it is possible to recover the infinite-volume continuum limit for a certain range of fermion flavors if we use fermions with a bare mass of zero. Our use of the four-dimensional density function is supported by a direct analysis of the lattice action.

Universal properties of Wilson loop operators in large N QCD

Eigenvalues of a Wilson loop operator are gauge invariant and their distribution undergoes a transition at infinite N as the size of the loop is changed. We study this transition using the average characteristic polynomial associated with the Wilson loop operator. We derive the scaling function in a certain double scaling limit for two dimensional QCD and hypothesize that the transition in three and four dimensional QCD are in the same universality class. Numerical evidence for this hypothesisis provided in three dimensions

Chiral Condensate in the Deconfined Phase of Quenched Gauge Theories

We compute the low lying spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator in the deconfined phase of finite-temperature quenched gauge theory. It suggests the existence of a chiral condensate which we confirm with a direct stochastic estimate. We show that the part of the spectrum responsible for the chiral condensate can be understood as arising from a dilute gas of instantons and anti-instantons.

Topology and chiral symmetry in finite temperature QCD

We investigate the realization of chiral symmetry in the vicinity of the deconfinement transition in quenched QCD using overlap fermions. Via the index theorem obeyed by the overlap fermions, we gain insight into the behavior of topology at finite temperature. We find small eigenvalues, clearly separated from the bulk of the eigenvalues, and study the properties of their distribution. We compare the distribution with a model of a dilute gas of instantons and anti-instantons and find good agreement.

A Study of Practical Implementations of the Overlap-Dirac Operator in Four Dimensions

We study three practical implementations of the Overlap-Dirac operator $D_o= (1/2) [1 + γ_5ε(H_w)]$ in four dimensions. Two implementations are based on different representations of $ε(H_w)$ as a sum over poles. One of them is a polar decomposition and the other is an optimal fit to a ratio of polynomials. The third one is obtained by representing $ε(H_w)$ using Gegenbauer polynomials and is referred to as the fractional inverse method. After presenting some spectral properties of the Hermitian operator $H_o=γ_5 D_o$, we study its spectrum in a smooth SU(2) instanton background with the aim of comparing the three implementations of $D_o$. We also present some results in SU(2) gauge field backgrounds generated at $β=2.5$ on an $8^4$ lattice. Chiral properties have been numerically verified.

The hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator in smooth SU(2) instanton backgrounds

We study the spectral flow of the hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator $\ham(m)$ as a function of $m$ in smooth SU(2) instanton backgrounds on the lattice. For a single instanton background with Dirichlet boundary conditions on $\ham(m)$, we find a level crossing in the spectral flow of $\ham(m)$, and we find the shape of the crossing mode at the crossing point to be in good agreement with the zero mode associated with the single instanton background. With anti-periodic boundary conditions on $\ham(m)$, we find that the instanton background in the singular gauge has the correct spectral flow but the one in regular gauge does not. We also investigate the spectral flows of two instanton and instanton-anti-instanton backgrounds.

A simulation of the Schwinger model in the overlap formalism

In the continuum, the single flavor massless Schwinger model has an exact global axial $U(1)$ symmetry in the sector of perturbative gauge fields. This symmetry is explicitly broken by gauge fields with nonzero topological charge inducing a nonzero expectation value for the bilinear $\barψψ$. We show that a lattice formulation of this model, using the overlap formalism to treat the massless fermions, explicitly exhibits this phenomenon. A Monte Carlo simulation of the complete system yields the correct value of the fermion condensate and shows unambiguously that it originates from the sector of topological charge equal to unity.

Two Loop Computation of a Running Coupling in Lattice Yang-Mills Theory

We compute the two loop coefficient in the relation between the lattice bare coupling and the running coupling defined through the Schroedinger functional for the case of pure SU(2) gauge theory. This result is needed as one computational component to relate the latter to the MSbar-coupling, and it allows us to implement O(a) improvement of the Schroedinger functional to two-loop order. In addition, the two-loop beta-function is verified in a perturbative computation on the lattice, and the behavior of an improved bare coupling is investigated beyond one loop.

The Schrödinger Functional - a Renormalizable Probe for Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

Following Symanzik we argue that the Schrödinger functional in lattice gauge theories without matter fields has a well-defined continuum limit. Due to gauge invariance no extra counter terms are required. The Schrödinger functional is, moreover, accessible to numerical simulations. It may hence be used to study the scaling properties of the theory and in particular the evolution of the renormalized gauge coupling from low to high energies. A concrete proposition along this line is made and the necessary perturbative analysis of the Schrödinger functional is carried through to 1-loop order.
