Comparison of Microservice Call Rate Predictions for Replication in the Cloud

Today, many users deploy their microservice-based applications with various interconnections on a cluster of Cloud machines, subject to stochastic changes due to dynamic user requirements. To address this problem, we compare three machine learning (ML) models for predicting the microservice call rates based on the microservice times and aiming at estimating the scalability requirements. We apply the linear regression (LR), multilayer perception (MLP), and gradient boosting regression (GBR) models on the Alibaba microservice traces. The prediction results reveal that the LR model reaches a lower training time than the GBR and MLP models. However, the GBR reduces the mean absolute error and the mean absolute percentage error compared to LR and MLP models. Moreover, the prediction results show that the required number of replicas for each microservice by the gradient boosting model is close to the actual test data without any prediction.

Hybrid On/Off Blockchain Approach for Vehicle Data Management, Processing and Visualization Exemplified by the ADAPT Platform

Hybrid on/off-blockchain vehicle data management approaches have received a lot of attention in recent years. However, there are various technical challenges remained to deal with. In this paper we relied on real-world data from Austria to investigate the effects of connectivity on the transport of personal protective equipment. We proposed a three-step mechanism to process, simulate, and store/visualize aggregated vehicle datasets together with a formal pipeline process workflow model. To this end, we implemented a hybrid blockchain platform based on the hyperledger fabric and gluster file systems. The obtained results demonstrated efficiency and stability for both hyperledger fabric and gluster file systems and ability of the both on/off-blockchain mechanisms to meet the platform quality of service requirements

Cloud, Fog or Edge: Where to Compute?

The computing continuum extends the high-performance cloud data centers with energy-efficient and low-latency devices close to the data sources located at the edge of the network. However, the heterogeneity of the computing continuum raises multiple challenges related to application management. These include where to offload an application - from the cloud to the edge - to meet its computation and communication requirements. To support these decisions, we provide in this article a detailed performance and carbon footprint analysis of a selection of use case applications with complementary resource requirements across the computing continuum over a real-life evaluation testbed.
