Bianchi type I cosmology with a Kalb-Ramond background field

An effect of the Lorentz symmetry breaking is pointed out in the cosmological context. Using a Bianchi I geometry coupled to the Kalb-Ramond field, a consequence of the Lorentz symmetry violation is indicated by a different rate of expansion in a given spatial direction. This article focuses on the coupling constant $ξ_1$, which generates, from the Kalb-Ramond field, all three coefficients that give rise to the Lorentz violation in the gravity sector of the minimal Standard Model Extension. The coupling constant $ξ_1$ increases the rate of expansion of the universe in a given direction during a dark energy era. As a consequence, a range of validity of that coupling constant is also obtained.

Braneworlds in $f(Q)$ gravity

We propose a braneworld scenario in a modified symmetric teleparallel gravitational theory, where the dynamics for the gravitational field is encoded in the nonmetricity tensor rather than in the curvature. Assuming a single real scalar field with a sine-Gordon self-interaction, the generalized quadratic nonmetricity invariant $\mathbb{Q}$ controls the brane width while keeping the shape of the energy density. By considering power corrections of the invariant $\mathbb{Q}$ in the gravitational Lagrangian, the sine-Gordon potential is modified exhibiting new barriers and false vacuum. As a result, the domain wall brane obtains an inner structure, and it undergoes a splitting process. In addition, we also propose a non-minimal coupling between a bulk fermion field and the nonmetricity invariant $\mathbb{Q}$. Such geometric coupling leads to a massless chiral fermion bound to the 3-brane and a stable tower of non-localized massive states.

Exact solution for a traversable wormhole in a curvature-coupled antisymmetric background field

In this work, we study a traversable wormhole sourced by an ideal matter fluid with an antisymmetric 2-tensor background field coupled to gravity in a scenario of spontaneously broken Lorentz symmetry. Contrary to employed in the literature, we use a nonminimal curvature-coupling term $B^{μν}B^{κλ}R_{μνκλ}$ which incorporates all three kinds of Lorentz-violating coefficient for the pure-gravity sector of the minimal standard-model extension. We find that the wormhole is non-asymptotically globally flat and determine the allowed parameters of the theory, showing that the matter fluid must be necessarily anisotropic. We also analyze the energy conditions, checking their validity range and comparing them with those predicted by general relativity.

Generalized Ellis-Bronikov traversable wormholes in $f(R)$ gravity with anisotropic dark matter

This paper studies generalized Ellis-Bronikov (E-B) traversable wormholes in $f(R)$ extended gravity. We assume that these wormholes are supported by anisotropic dark matter (DM) according to the most often used phenomenological models, namely those of Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW), Thomas-Fermi (T-F), and Pseudo-isothermal (PI). Initially, we obtain the field equations in a general scenario of $f(R)$ theories in the metric formalism for the static and spherically symmetric Morris-Thorne spacetime. Then we particularize to a $f(R)$ model with power-law, including the Starobinky modified gravity. Following, we analyze the energy conditions which are not dependent on the DM models (Null and Weak Energy Conditions -- NEC and WEC) and those which are model-dependent (Strong and Dominant Energy Conditions SEC and DEC). Finally, we compare some E-B wormhole solutions and the mentioned DM models, discussing the feasibility of the wormhole-dark matter system in different scenarios.

Meson scattering in a Lorentz-violating scalar QED at finite temperature

This paper investigates how the nonzero temperature affects the differential cross-section for mesons scattering in a Lorentz-violating extension of the scalar electrodynamics. We initially discuss some features of the model and extract the zero temperature Feynman rules. Temperature effects are introduced using the Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism. It is shown that the corrections induced on the meson scattering are very large in the high-temperature regime. Furthermore, our results also suggest that temperature effects may contribute to new constraints on the Lorentz-violating parameters.

Softly higher-derivative massive gravity

In this work, we study the higher-derivative massive gravity in $D$-dimensional space-time with the mass term arisen due to a 2-brane embedded in a $4D$ Minkowski spacetime. We consider the effect of a resonance mass term from the DGP braneworld model for the higher-derivative massive gravity. Moreover, we add the gravitational Chern-Simons and Ricci-Cotton terms to this model and evaluate the graviton propagator using a basis of Barnes-Rivers spin projectors. Using the obtained propagator, we proceed with discussing the consistency of the model, writing the dispersion relations, and analyzing causality and unitarity.

Black holes with a cosmological constant in bumblebee gravity

In this work, we present black hole solutions with a cosmological constant in bumblebee gravity, which provides a mechanism for the Lorentz symmetry violation by assuming a nonzero vacuum expectation value for the bumblebee field. From the gravitational point of view, such solutions are spherically symmetric black holes with an effective cosmological constant and are supported by an anisotropic energy-momentum tensor, conceived of as the manifestation of the bumblebee field in the spacetime geometry. Then we calculate the shadow angular radius for the proposed black hole solution with a positive effective cosmological constant. In particular, our results are the very first relation between the bumblebee field and the shadow angular size.

Dual equivalence between self-dual and topologically massive $B\wedge F$ models coupled to matter in $3+1$ dimensions

In this work, we revisit the duality between a self-dual non-gauge invariant theory and a topological massive theory in $3+1$ dimensions. The self-dual Lagrangian is composed by a vector field and an antisymmetric field tensor whereas the topological massive Lagrangian is build using a $B \wedge F$ term. Though the Lagrangians are quite different, they yield to equations of motion that are connected by a simple dual mapping among the fields. We discuss this duality by analyzing the degrees of freedom in both theories and comparing their propagating modes at the classical level. Moreover, we employ the master action method to obtain a fundamental Lagrangian that interpolates between these two theories and makes evident the role of the topological $B \wedge F$ term in the duality relation. By coupling these theories with matter fields, we show that the duality holds provided a Thirring-like term is included. In addition, we use the master action in order to probe the duality upon the quantized fields. We carried out a functional integration of the fields and compared the resulting effective Lagrangians.

Modified black hole solution with a background Kalb-Ramond field

We study the gravitation effects on a static and spherically symmetric spacetime due to the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a Kalb-Ramond field. The Kalb-Ramond VEV is a background tensor field which produces a local Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) of spacetime. Considering a non-minimal coupling between the Kalb-Ramond (VEV) and the Ricci tensor, we obtain an exact parameter-dependent power-law modified black hole. For a particular choice of the LSB parameter, the Lorentz violation produces a solution similar to the Reissner-Nordstrom, despite the absence of charge. The near-horizon geometry is modified by including a new inner horizon and shifting the Schwarzschild horizon. Asymptotically, the usual Minkowski spacetime with a background tensor field is recovered. The vacuum configurations are studied considering the energy conditions and the Lorentz violating source properties. By means of the mercury perihelion test, an upper bound to the local Lorentz violation (LV) is obtained, and its corresponding effects on the black hole temperature is investigated.

The Casimir effect for the scalar and Elko fields in a Lifshitz-like field theory

In this work, we obtain the Casimir energy for the real scalar field and the Elko neutral spinor field in a field theory at a Lifshitz fixed point (LP). We analyze the massless and the massive case for both fields using dimensional regularization. We obtain the Casimir energy in terms of the dimensional parameter and the LP parameter. Particularizing our result, we can recover the usual results without LP parameter in (3+1) dimensions presented in the literature. Moreover, we compute the effects of the LP parameter in the thermal corrections for the massless scalar field.

Thermodynamics of Schwarzschild-like black holes in modified gravity models

Over the last decades, many methods were developed to prove Hawking radiation. Recently, a semiclassical method known as the tunneling method has been proposed as a more straightforward way of derivating black hole thermodynamical properties. This method has been widely applied to a vast sort of spacetimes with satisfactory results. In this work, we obtain the black hole thermodynamics in the presence of a Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB). We apply the Hamilton-Jacobi method to Schwarzschild-like black holes, and we investigate whether the LSB affects their thermodynamics. The results found show that the LSB not only changes the black hole thermodynamic quantities but also makes it necessary to modify the standard first law of thermodynamics.

Bipartite-Finsler symmetries

In this work, we study the symmetries of a Lorentz violating bipartite-Finsler spacetime. By using the Finslerian Killing equation for the bipartite-Finsler metric, we analyze how the anisotropy of the bipartite spacetime modifies the local Lorentz symmetries. The symmetries of the Finsler metric allow us to obtain the bipartite algebra and interpreted it as a deformed Lorentz algebra. Causality effects driven by the particle modified dispersion relations are investigated upon Minkowski and the Schwarzschild spacetimes. The background bipartite tensor yields to superluminal velocities and modifies the effective gravitational potential.

Multiresonance modes in sine-Gordon brane models

In this work, we study the localization of the vector gauge field in two five-dimensional braneworlds generated by scalar fields coupled to gravity. The sine-Gordon like potentials are employed to produce different thick brane setups. A zero mode localized is obtained, and we show the existence of reverberations with the wave solutions indicating a quasi-localized massive mode. More interesting results are achieved when we propose a double sine-Gordon potential to the scalar field. The resulting thick brane shows a more detailed topology with the presence of an internal structure composed by two kinks. The massive spectrum of the gauge field is revalued on this scenario revealing the existence of various resonant modes. Furthermore, we compute the corrections to Coulomb law coming from these massive KK vector modes in these thick scenarios, where is concluded that the dilaton parameter regulates these corrections.

Quasinormal frequencies of self-dual black holes

One simplified black hole model constructed from a semiclassical analysis of loop quantum gravity (LQG) is called self-dual black hole. This black hole solution depends on a free dimensionless parameter P known as the polymeric parameter and also on the $a_{0}$ area related to the minimum area gap of LQG. In the limit of P and $a_{0}$ going to zero, the usual Schwarzschild-solution is recovered. Here we investigate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless scalar perturbations in the self-dual black hole background. We compute the QN frequencies using the sixth order WKB approximation method and compare them with numerical solutions of the Regge-Wheeler equation. Our results show that as the parameter P grows, the real part of the QN frequencies suffers an initial increase and then starts to decrease while the magnitude of the imaginary one decreases for fixed area gap $a_{0}$. This particular feature means that the damping of scalar perturbations in the self-dual black hole spacetimes are slower, and their oscillations are faster or slower according to the value of P.

Gravity localization in sine-Gordon braneworlds

In this work we study two types of five-dimensional braneworld models given by sine-Gordon potentials. In both scenarios, the thick brane is generated by a real scalar field coupled to gravity. We focus our investigation on the localization of graviton field and the behaviour of the massive spectrum. In particular, we analyse the localization of massive modes by means of a relative probability method in a Quantum Mechanics context. Initially, considering a scalar field sine-Gordon potential, we find a localized state to the graviton at zero mode. However, when we consider a double sine-Gordon potential, the brane structure is changed allowing the existence of massive resonant states. The new results show how the existence of an internal structure can aid in the emergence of massive resonant modes on the brane.

Gravity localization on hybrid branes

This work deals with gravity localization on codimension-1 brane worlds engendered by compacton-like kinks, the so-called hybrid branes. In such scenarios, the thin brane behaviour is manifested when the extra dimension is outside the compact domain, where the energy density is non-trivial, instead of asymptotically as in the usual thick brane models. The zero mode is trapped in the brane, as required. The massive modes, although are not localized in the brane, have important phenomenological implications such as corrections to the Newton's law. We study such corrections in the usual thick domain wall and in the hybrid brane scenarios. By means of suitable numerical methods, we attain the mass spectrum for the graviton and the corresponding wavefunctions. The spectra possess the usual linearly increasing behaviour from the Kaluza-Klein theories. Further, we show that the 4D gravitational force is slightly increased at short distances. The first eigenstate contributes highly for the correction to the Newton's law. The subsequent normalized solutions have diminishing contributions. Moreover, we find out that the phenomenology of the hybrid brane is not different from the usual thick domain wall. The use of numerical techniques for solving the equations of the massive modes is useful for matching possible phenomenological measurements in the gravitational law as a probe to warped extra dimensions.

Radiative corrections in bumblebee electrodynamics

We investigate some quantum features of the bumblebee electrodynamics in flat spacetimes. The bumblebee field is a vector field that leads to a spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. For a smooth quadratic potential, the massless excitation (Nambu-Goldstone boson) can be identified as the photon, transversal to the vacuum expectation value of the bumblebee field. Besides, there is a massive excitation associated with the longitudinal mode and whose presence leads to instability in the spectrum of the theory. By using the principal-value prescription, we show that no one-loop radiative corrections to the mass term is generated. Moreover, the bumblebee self-energy is not transverse, showing that the propagation of the longitudinal mode can not be excluded from the effective theory.

Dirac equation in very special relativity for hydrogen atom

In this work, we study the modified Dirac equation in the framework of very special relativity (VSR). The low-energy regime is accessed and the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian is obtained. It turns out that this Hamiltonian is similar to that achieved from the Standard Model Extension (SME) via coupling of the spinor field to a Lorentz-violating term, but new features arise inherited from the non-local character of the VSR. In addition, the implications of the VSR-modified Lorentz symmetry on the spectrum of a hydrogen atom are determined by calculating the first-order energy corrections in the context of standard quantum mechanics. Among the results, we highlight that the modified Hamiltonian provides non-vanishing corrections which lift the degeneracy of the energy levels and allow us to find an upper bound upon the VSR-parameter.

Einstein-Hilbert Graviton modes modified by the Lorentz-violating bumblebee Field

In this work, we investigate the consequences of the spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry, triggered by the bumblebee vector field, on the usual Einstein-Hilbert theory. Specifically, we consider the Einstein-Hilbert action modified by the bumblebee dynamic field, and evaluate the graviton propagator using an extended basis of Barnes-Rivers tensor projectors, involving the Lorentz-violating vector. Once the propagator is carried out, we proceed with discussing the consistency of the model, writing the dispersion relations, and analyzing causality and unitarity. We verify that this model possesses two dispersion relations: one provides causal and unitary propagating modes, while the second yields a causal but nonunitary mode which spoils the physical consistency of the model.

Graviton resonances on two-field thick branes

This work presents new results about the graviton massive spectrum in two-field thick branes. Analyzing the massive spectra with a relative probability method we have firstly showed the presence of resonance structures and obtained a connection between the thickness of the defect and the lifetimes of such resonances. We obtain another interesting results considering the degenerate Bloch brane solutions. In these thick brane models, we have the emergence of a splitting effect controlled by a degeneracy parameter. When the degeneracy constant tends to a critical value, we have found massive resonances to the gravitational field indicating the existence of modes highly coupled to the brane. We also discussed the influence of the brane splitting effect over the resonance lifetimes.

Thermodynamical properties of graphene in noncommutative phase-space

We investigated the thermodynamic properties of graphene in a noncommutative phase-space in the presence of a constant magnetic field. In particular, we determined the behaviour of the main thermodynamical functions: the Helmholtz free energy, the mean energy, the entropy and the specific heat. The high temperature limit is worked out and the thermodynamic quantities, such as mean energy and specific heat, exhibit the same features as the commutative case. Possible connections with the results already established in the literature are discussed briefly.

Three-dimensional Dirac oscillator in a thermal bath

The thermal properties of the three-dimensional Dirac oscillator are considered. The canonical partition function is determined, and the high-temperature limit is assessed. The degeneracy of energy levels and their physical implications on the main thermodynamic functions are analyzed, revealing that these functions assume values greater than the one-dimensional case. So that at high temperatures, the limit value of the specific heat is three times bigger.

Kalb-Ramond field localization on the Bloch brane

This work deals with new results on the Kalb-Ramond (KR) field localization in braneworld models. We consider a five-dimensional warped spacetime with an embedded 4D thick brane which is generated by two real scalar fields coupled with gravity (the so called Bloch brane). We find a KR field zero mode localized with the inclusion of the dilaton coupling. Analyzing the massive spectrum, we detected a series of resonant modes that arise from the solutions of the Schrödinger-like equation for KR field. The effects of the brane thickness and of the dilaton coupling over the resonance structures are determined. Such analysis is extended to the resonance lifetimes of the massive modes, allowing a better understanding on the localization mechanism of the model.

Matter-gravity scattering in the presence of spontaneous Lorentz violation

Considering quantum gravity within the framework of effective field theory, we investigated the consequences of spontaneous Lorentz violation for the gravitational potential. In particular, we focus our attention on the bumblebee models, in which the graviton couples to a vector $B_μ$ that assumes a nonzero vacuum expectation value. The leading order corrections for the nonrelativistic potential are obtained from calculation of the scattering matrix of two scalar particles interacting gravitationally. These corrections imply anisotropic properties associated with the bumblebee background and also add a Darwin-like term for Newton's potential.

Radiative generation of the CPT-even gauge term of the SME from a dimension-five nonminimal coupling term

In this letter we show for the first time that the usual CPT-even gauge term of the standard model extension (SME) can be radiatively generated, in a gauge invariant level, in the context of a modified QED endowed with a dimension-five nonminimal coupling term recently proposed in the literature. As a consequence, the existing upper bounds on the coefficients of the tensor $(K_{F}) $ can be used improve the bounds on the magnitude of the nonminimal coupling, $λ(K_{F}),$ by the factors $10^{5}$ or $10^{25}.$ The nonminimal coupling also generates higher-order derivative contributions to the gauge field effective action quadratic terms.

Two-loop effective potential for the Wess-Zumino model in 2+1 dimensions

By using superfield techniques, the effective potential of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Wess-Zumino model in 2+1 dimensions is computed off-shell up to two loops. It is shown that supersymmetry is not dynamically broken, and that dynamical generation of mass does not occur perturbatively. We also investigate the renormalization of the effective potential and determine the renormalization group gamma and beta functions, showing that this model is infrared free. Comparison with some other results in the literature is provided.

Effects of a CPT-even and Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling on the electron-positron scattering

We propose a new \emph{CPT}-even and Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling between fermions and Abelian gauge fields involving the CPT-even tensor $(K_{F})_{μναβ}$ of the standard model extension. We thus investigate its effects on the cross section of the electron-positron scattering by analyzing the process $e^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrowμ^{+}+μ^{-}$. Such a study was performed for the parity-odd and parity-even nonbirefringent components of the Lorentz-violating $(K_{F})_{μναβ}$ tensor. Finally, by using experimental data available in the literature, we have imposed upper bounds as tight as $10^{-12}(eV)^{-1}$ on the magnitude of the CPT-even and Lorentz-violating parameters while nonminimally coupled.
