Nature of the field-induced magnetic incommensurability in multiferroic Ni$_3$TeO$_6$

Using single crystal neutron scattering we show that the magnetic structure Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ at fields above 8.6 T along the $c$ axis changes from a commensurate collinear antiferromagnetic structure with spins along c and ordering vector $Q_C$= (0 0 1.5), to a conical spiral with propagation vector $Q_{IC}$= (0 0 1.5$\pmδ$),$δ\sim$0.18, having a significant spin component in the ($a$,$b$) plane. We determine the phase diagram of this material in magnetic fields up to 10.5 T along $c$ and show the phase transition between the low field and conical spiral phases is of first order by observing a discontinuous jump of the ordering vector. $Q_{IC}$ is found to drift both as function of magnetic field and temperature. Preliminary inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the spin wave gap in zero field has minima exactly at $Q_{IC}$ and a gap of about 1.1 meV consisting with a cross-over around 8.6 T. Our findings excludes the possibility of the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as a cause for the giant magneto-electric coupling earlier observed in this material and advocates for the symmetric exchangestriction as the origin of this effect.

Dimensional Reduction in Quantum Dipolar Antiferromagnets

We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF$_4$. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h$_4$ universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2+1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF$_4$ which has the same crystal structure, but largely different T$_N$, crystal field environment and hyperfine interactions. Our results therefore experimentally establish that the dimensional reduction is universal to quantum dipolar antiferromagnets on a distorted diamond lattice.

Field-induced inter-planar correlations in the high-temperature superconductor La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

We present neutron scattering studies of the inter-planar correlations in the high-temperature superconductor La1.88Sr0.12CuO4 (T_c=27 K). The correlations are studied both in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the CuO2 planes, and in zero field under different cooling conditions. We find that the effect of the magnetic field is to increase the magnetic scattering signal at all values of the out-of-plane wave vector L, indicating an overall increase of the magnetic moments. In addition, weak correlations between the copper oxide planes develop in the presence of a magnetic field. This effect is not taken into account in previous reports on the field effect of magnetic scattering, since usually only L~0 is probed. Interestingly, the results of quench-cooling the sample are similar to those obtained by applying a magnetic field. Finally, a small variation of the incommensurate peak position as a function of L provides evidence that the incommensurate signal is twinned with the dominating and sub-dominant twin displaying peaks at even or odd L, respectively.

Direct proof of unique magnetic and superconducting phases in superoxygenated high-Tc cuprates

We present a combined magnetic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation study of the nature of the magnetic and superconducting phases in electronically phase separated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y), x = 0.04, 065, 0.09. For all samples, we find long-range modulated magnetic order below T_N ~ T_c = 39 K. In sharp contrast wit oxygen-stoichiometric La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), we find that the magnetic propagation vector as well as the ordered magnetic moment is independent of Sr content and consistent with that of the 'striped' cuprates. Our study provides direct proof that superoxygenation in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y) allows the spin stripe ordered phase to emerge and phase separate from superconducting regions with the hallmarks of optimally doped oxygen-stoichiometric La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4).

Gains from the upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX at the BER-II reactor

The upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX is described. We discuss the characterisation of the gains from the new primary spectrometer, including a larger guide and double focussing monochromator, and present measurements of the energy and momentum resolution and of the neutron flux of the instrument. We found an order of magnitude gain in intensity (at the cost of coarser momentum resolution), and that the incoherent elastic energy widths are measurably narrower than before the upgrade. The much improved count rate should allow the use of smaller single crystals samples and thus enable the upgraded FLEXX spectrometer to continue making leading edge measurements.

Quantum spin liquid in frustrated one dimensional LiCuSbO4

A quantum magnet, LiCuSbO4, with chains of edge-sharing S = 1/2 CuO6 octahedra is reported. While the Curie-Weiss constant is ferromagnetic, θ= 30 K, no phase transition or spin freezing occurs down to 100 mK. Specific heat indicates a distinct high field phase near the 12 T saturation field. Neutron scattering shows incommensurate spin correlations with q = 0.47\pm0.01π/a and places an upper limit of 70 \mueV on a potential spin gap. Exact diagonalization of easy plane S = 1/2 chains with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions (J1 = - 75 K, J2 = 34 K) accounts for the T > 2 K data.
