Detailed studies of 100^{100}Mo two-neutrino double beta decay in NEMO-3

The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100^{100}Mo to the ground state of 100^{100}Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of 5×1055\times10^5 events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n=2,3,7, as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained.

Background Studies for the MINER Coherent Neutrino Scattering Reactor Experiment

The proposed Mitchell Institute Neutrino Experiment at Reactor (MINER) experiment at the Nuclear Science Center at Texas A&M University will search for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering within close proximity (about 2 meters) of a 1 MW TRIGA nuclear reactor core using low threshold, cryogenic germanium and silicon detectors. Given the Standard Model cross section of the scattering process and the proposed experimental proximity to the reactor, as many as 5 to 20 events/kg/day are expected. We discuss the status of preliminary measurements to characterize the main backgrounds for the proposed experiment. Both in situ measurements at the experimental site and simulations using the MCNP and GEANT4 codes are described. A strategy for monitoring backgrounds during data taking is briefly discussed.

Measurement of the 2νββνββ decay half-life of 150^{150}Nd and a search for 0νββνββ decay processes with the full exposure from the NEMO-3 detector

We present results from a search for neutrinoless double-ββ (0νββ0νββ) decay using 36.6 g of the isotope 150^{150}Nd with data corresponding to a live time of 5.25 y recorded with the NEMO-3 detector. We construct a complete background model for this isotope, including a measurement of the two-neutrino double-ββ decay half-life of T1/22ν=T^{2ν}_{1/2}=[9.34 ±\pm 0.22 (stat.) −0.60+0.62^{+0.62}_{-0.60} (syst.)]×1018\times 10^{18} y for the ground state transition, which represents the most precise result to date for this isotope. We perform a multivariate analysis to search for \zeronu decays in order to improve the sensitivity and, in the case of observation, disentangle the possible underlying decay mechanisms. As no evidence for \zeronu decay is observed, we derive lower limits on half-lives for several mechanisms involving physics beyond the Standard Model. The observed lower limit, assuming light Majorana neutrino exchange mediates the decay, is T1/20ν>T^{0ν}_{1/2} > 2.0 ×1022\times 10^{22} y at the 90% C.L., corresponding to an upper limit on the effective neutrino mass of ⟨mν⟩\langle m_ν \rangle << 1.6 - 5.3 eV..

Measurement of the double-beta decay half-life and search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 48Ca^{48}{\rm Ca} with the NEMO-3 detector

The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory has investigated the double-ββ decay of 48Ca^{48}{\rm Ca}. Using 5.255.25 yr of data recorded with a 6.99 g6.99\,{\rm g} sample of 48Ca^{48}{\rm Ca}, approximately 150150 double-ββ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than 33. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-ββ decay of 48Ca^{48}{\rm Ca} has been measured to be T1/22ν = [6.4 −0.6+0.7(stat.) −0.9+1.2(syst.)]×1019 yrT^{2ν}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}. A search for neutrinoless double-ββ decay of 48Ca^{48}{\rm Ca} yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be T1/20ν>2.0×1022 yrT^{0ν}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr} at 90%90\% confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of <mββ><6.0−26< m_{ββ} > < 6.0 - 26 eV{\rm eV}, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

Analogue of the quantum total probability rule from Paraconsistent bayesian probability theory

We derive an analogue of the quantum total probability rule by constructing a probability theory based on paraconsistent logic. Bayesian probability theory is constructed upon classical logic and a desiderata, that is, a set of desired properties that the theory must obey. We construct a new probability theory following the desiderata of Bayesian probability theory but replacing the classical logic by paraconsistent logic. This class of logic has been conceived to handle eventual inconsistencies or contradictions among logical propositions without leading to the trivialisation of the theory. Within this Paraconsistent bayesian probability theory it is possible to deduce a new total probability rule which depends on the probabilities assigned to the inconsistencies. Certain assignments of values for these probabilities lead to expressions identical to those of Quantum mechanics, in particular to the quantum total probability rule obtained via symmetric informationally complete positive- operator valued measure.

Characterization of fiducial states in prime dimensions via mutually unbiased bases

In this work we present some new properties of fiducial states in prime dimensions. We parameterize fiducial operators on eigenvectors bases of displacement operators, which allows us to find a manifold ΩΩ of hermitian operators satisfying Tr(ρ)=Tr(ρ2)=1\mathrm{Tr}(ρ)=\mathrm{Tr}(ρ^2)=1 for any ρρ in ΩΩ. This manifold contains the complete set of fiducial pure states in every prime dimension. Indeed, any quantum state ρ≥0ρ\geq0 belonging to ΩΩ is a fiducial pure state. Also, we present an upper bound for every probability associated to mutually unbiased decomposition of fiducial states. This bound allows us to prove that every fiducial state tends to be mutually unbiased to the maximal set of mutually unbiased bases in higher prime dimensions. Finally, we show that any ρρ in ΩΩ minimizes an entropic uncertainty principle related to the second order Rényi entropy.

Classical and Quantum Chaos in the Diamond Shaped Billiard

We analyse the classical and quantum behaviour of a particle trapped in a diamond shaped billiard. We defined this billiard as a half stadium connected with a triangular billiard. A parameter ξξ which gradually change the shape of the billiard from a regular equilateral triangle (ξ=1ξ=1) to a diamond (ξ=0ξ=0) was used to control the transition between the regular and chaotic regimes. The classical behaviour is regular when the control parameter ξξ is one; in contrast, the system is chaotic when ξ≠1ξ\neq 1 even for values of ξξ close to one. The entropy grows fast as ξξ is decreased from 1 and the Lyapunov exponent remains positive for ξ<1ξ<1. The Finite Difference Method was implemented in order to solve the quantum problem. The energy spectrum and eigenstates were numerically computed for different values of the control parameter. The nearest-neighbour spacing distribution is analysed as a function of ξξ, finding a Poisson and a Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble(GOE) distribution for regular and chaotic regimes respectively. Several scars and bouncing ball states are shown with their corresponding classical periodic orbits. Along the document the classical chaos identifiers are computed to show that system is chaotic. On the other hand, the quantum counterpart is in agreement with the Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture and exhibits the standard features for chaotic billiard such as the scarring of the wavefunction.

Scaling functions for Tsallis non--extensive statistics

We study the one-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions in the context of Tsallis non-extensive statistics by computing numerically the number of states with a given energy. We find that the internal energy, magnetization, entropy and free energy follow non-trivial scaling laws with the number of constituents NN and temperature TT. Each of the scaling functions for the internal energy, the magnetization and the free energy, adopts three different forms corresponding to q>1q>1, q=1q=1 and q<1q<1, being qq the non-extensivity parameter of Tsallis statistics.
