Observation of Fermi liquid phase with broken symmetry in a single crystalline nanorod of Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We report experimental evidence of emergent broken symmetry Fermi liquid state in an isolated single crystalline nanorod of $\rm Pr_2 Ir_2 O_7$. We find clear signature of the onset of the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature marked by the sign inversion of magnetoresistance from negative at high temperature, characteristic of incoherent Kondo scattering, to positive as well as a $\rm T^2$ dependence of resistivity at low temperature. A resistive anomaly is observed, which is accompanied by thermal hysteresis in the presence of magnetic field, suggesting itinerant metamagnetism. The observed high field negative magnetoresistance with quadratic field dependence at low temperature, which is most likely due to suppression of itinerant spin fluctuation, and the irreversibility of the magneto-resistive properties in the Fermi liquid regime suggest existence of an unusual state with broken spin rotation and time reversal symmetry, hallmark of `hastatic' order. The major features of such temperature dependence of resistivity and magnetoresistance can be explained in a phenomenological model incorporating two distinct hybridization channels, which is physically consistent with the possibility of the formation of the `hastatic' Fermi liquid phase.

Critical behavior and magnetocaloric effect across the magnetic transition in Mn$_{1+x}$Fe$_{4-x}$Si$_{3}$

The nature of the magnetic transition, critical scaling of magnetization, and magnetocaloric effect in Mn$_{1+x}$Fe$_{4-x}$Si$_{3}$ ($ x =$ 0 to 1) are studied in detail. Our measurements show no thermal hysteresis across the magnetic transition for the parent compound which is in contrast with the previous report and corroborate the second order nature of the transition. The magnetic transition could be tuned continuously with Mn substitution at the Fe site. The Mn substitution leads to a linear increase in the unit cell volume and a slight reduction in the effective moment. A detailed critical analysis of the magnetization data for $x = 0.0$ and 0.2 is performed in the critical regime using the modified Arrott plots, Kouvel-Fisher plot, universal curve scaling, and scaling analysis of magnetocaloric effect. The magnetization isotherms follow modified Arrott plots with critical exponent ($β\simeq 0.308$, $γ\simeq 1.448$, and $δ\simeq 5.64$) for the parent compound ($x=0.0$) and ($β\simeq 0.304$, $γ\simeq 1.445$, and $δ\simeq 5.64$) for $x = 0.2$. The Kouvel-Fisher and universal scaling plots of the magnetization isotherms further confirm the reliability of our critical analysis and values of the exponents. These values of the critical exponents are found to be same for both the parent and doped samples which do not fall under any of the standard universality classes. A reasonable magnetocaloric effect $ΔS_{\rm m}\simeq-6.67$~J/Kg-K and -5.84~J/Kg-K for $x= 0.0$ and 0.2 compounds, respectively, with a huge relative cooling power ($RCP \sim 700$~J/Kg) for 9~T field change is observed. The universal scaling of magnetocaloric effect further mimics the second order character of the magnetic transition. The obtained critical exponents from the critical analysis of magnetocaloric effect agree with the values deduced from the magnetic isotherm analysis.

Electronic properties in itinerant ferromagnet SrRu$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$

Here, we study the electrical transport and specific heat in 4$d$ based ferromagnetic material SrRuO$_3$ and its Ti substituted SrRu$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$ series ($x$ $\le$ 0.7). The SrRuO$_3$ is a metal and shows itinerant ferromagnetism with transition temperature $T_c$ $\sim$ 160 K. The nonmagnetic Ti$^{4+}$ (3$d^0$) substitution would not only weaken the active Ru-O-Ru channel but is also expected to tune the electronic density and electron correlation effect. A metal to insulator transition has been observed around $x$ $\sim$ 0.4. The nature of charge transport in paramagnetic-metallic state ($x$ $\leq$ 0.4) and in insulating state ($x$ $>$ 0.4) follows modified Mott's variable range hopping model. In ferromagnetic-metallic state, resistivity shows a $T^2$ dependence below $T_c$ which though modifies to $T^{3/2}$ dependence at low temperature. In Ti substituted samples, temperature range for $T^{3/2}$ dependence extends to higher temperature. Interestingly, this $T^{3/2}$ dependence dominates in whole ferromagnetic regime in presence of magnetic field. This evolution of electronic transport behavior can be explained within the framework of Fermi liquid theory and electron-magnon scattering mechanism. The negative magnetoresistance exhibits a hysteresis and a crossover between negative and positive value with magnetic field which is connected with magnetic behavior in series. The decreasing electronic coefficient of specific heat with $x$ supports the increasing insulating behavior in present series. We calculate a high Kadowaki-Woods ratio ($x$ $\leq$ 0.3) for SrRuO$_3$ which increases with substitution concentration. This signifies an increasing electronic correlation effect with substitution concentration.

Structural correlations in the enhancement of ferroelectric property of Sr doped BaTiO3

The effect of Sr doping in BaTiO3 (BTO) with nominal compositions Ba0.80Sr0.20TiO3 (BSTO) have been explored in its structural, lattice vibration, dielectric, ferroelectric and electrocaloric properties. The temperature dependent dielectric results elucidate the enhancement in dielectric constant and exhibit three frequency independent transitions around 335, 250 and 185 K which are related to different structural transitions. All these transitions occur at lower temperature as compared with pristine BTO, however; remnant electric polarization (P) of BSTO is much higher than in BTO. The value of P is around 5 microC/cm2 at room temperature and the maximum P around 8 microC/cm2 is observed at tetragonal to orthorhombic and orthorhombic to rhombohedral transitions. The electro-caloric effect shows the maximum adiabatic change in temperature deltaT approx 0.24 K at cubic to tetragonal transition. The temperature dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman results shows correlations between P, crystal structure and lattice vibrations. Our results demonstrate the enhancement in ferroelectric properties of BTO with Sr doping. The origin of the enhancement in ferroelectric property is also discussed which is related to the appearance of superlattice peak around room temperature due to TiO6 octahedral distortion. These enhanced properties would be useful to design lead free high quality ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials.

Magneto-dielectric Effect in Relaxor Dipolar Glassy Tb2CoMnO6 Film

We report magneto-dielectric properties of partially B-site ordered monoclinic Tb2CoMnO6 double perovskite thin film epitaxially grown by metalorganic aerosol deposition technique. Transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping shows the presence and distribution of both Co2+ and Co3+ ions in the film, evidencing a partial B-site disorder, which was further confirmed by the observation of reduced saturation magnetization at low temperatures. The ferromagnetic Curie temperature, TC=110 K, is slightly higher as compared to the bulk value (100 K) probably due to an in plane tensile strain. Remarkably, a short range ordering of spins at T*~190 K>>TC was established and assigned to the B-site disorder in the film. Two different dielectric relaxation peaks have been observed; they merge at the same temperature T* of short range spin correlations. Moreover, an unexpected high temperature dipolar relaxor-glass-like transition at T~T* was observed, at which a coupling to short range magnetic correlations results in a 4% magneto-dielectric coupling.

Structural, magnetic and electric polarization properties of geometrically frustrated YBaCo4O7 and DyBaCo4O7 cobaltites

In RBaCo4O7 (R = Ca, Y and Rare earth) cobaltite family, only CaBaCo4O7 shows 3D long range ferrimagnetic and spin driven electric polarization properties. In the present study, we have investigated the structural, magnetic and electric polarization properties in YBaCo4O7 and DyBaCo4O7 members of this family and the obtained results are compared with the CaBaCo4O7. The compound YBaCo4O7 showed a series of magnetic transitions in agreement with reported literature, additionally, a cluster glass behavior below 5 K is observed. Powder neutron diffraction studies on DyBaCo4O7 cobaltite showed an orthorhombic Pbn21 symmetry and signature of short-range 120 degree magnetic correlations of kagome layer and a spin glass behavior below 65 K. Dielectric measurements on both the samples showed strong frequency dispersion at high temperature and frequency independent behavior at low temperature without dielectric anomaly. Pyroelectric current measurement has showed a broad peak around 50 K in both the samples; however, a careful analysis relates the peak to thermally stimulated depolarization current. This study signifies that the giant structural distortions and cobalt charge ordering at kagome layer are the key factors to drive both long range magnetic ordering and spin driven electric polarization in this cobaltite family.

Low field magnetoelectric effect in Fe substituted Co4Nb2O9

Co4Nb2O9 (CNO) having α-Al2O3 crystal structure with Co chains along c-direction shows gigantic magnetoelelctric coupling below antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of 27 K but above a spin flop field of 1.6 T. We have investigated structural, magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of Fe substituted (10% and 20%) samples and compared with the parent one. In fact magnetic and specific heat measurements have revealed an additional magnetic transition below 10 K and presence of short range magnetic ordering above ~ 50 K in parent as well as in Fe substituted samples. Linear magnetoelelctric and ferroelectric behaviours are evidenced in the Fe substituted samples where an electric field of 5 kV/m is sufficient to align the dipoles and the magnetoelelctric coupling is ensured for magnetic fields as low as 0.25 T, far below the spin flop field.

Structural and magnetic properties of S = 3/2 chemically disordered perovskite Sr2TiMnO6

Single phase polycrystalline sample of perovskite Sr2TiMnO6 (STMO) has been successfully synthesized via solid state reaction route. Its detailed structural and physical properties have been studied using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization, specific heat, and dielectric measurements. Rietveld analysis of the powder XRD data and transmission electron microscopy studies confirm that STMO is not a double perovskite structure with Fm-3m space group. But it is a disordered perovskite structure with Pm-3m space group where Ti4+ and Mn4+ ions are randomly distributed at the 1b site. The dc magnetization (\c{hi}dc-vs-T) measurements in the temperature range 2-300K reveals a single anomaly at ~13K with predominant long range canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. The frequency invariant maxima at 13K in the ac susceptibility (\c{hi}ac-vs-T) discards the spin-glass behaviour in STMO. Despite the presence of sharp feature in M-T data, the specific heat data (Cp-vs-T) shows only a broad hump around 13K, which has been attributed to the magneto-structural ordering giving rise to canted AFM state in chemically disorder STMO. Matching with the magnetic and specific heat anomaly, the dielectric permittivity also shows a broad anomaly around 14K, indicating the possible magneto-dielectric coupling in STMO.

Novel thermal effects across first order magnetic transition in Ta doped $HfFe_2$ intermetallic

Novel thermal effects across the first order antiferromagnetic (AFM) - ferromagnetic (FM) transition in an intermetallic alloy are reported. They show instances of warming when heat is extracted from the sample, and cooling when heat is provided to the sample across AFM-FM transition in Ta doped $HfFe_2$, thus providing indisputable evidence of metastable supercooled AFM and superheated FM states, respectively. Such thermal effects in a magnetic solid prepared from commercially available materials has been reported for the first time. The transition proceeds in multiple steps which is interpreted in the framework of quenched disorder broadening of AFM-FM transition and classical nucleation theory. Measurements in the presence of magnetic field conform to above frame work.

Effect of oxygen off-stoichiometry on coupled structural and magnetic phase-transitions in La0.15Sr0.85MnO3-d (d = 0.02, 0.14)

Effect of oxygen off-stoichiometry on the structural and magnetic properties of La0.15Sr0.85MnO3-d (d = 0.02,0.14) has been studied employing low-temperature x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, electrical-transport and magnetization. The nearly stoichiometric composition under goesfirst order phase-transition from cubic to tetragonal P4/mmm at 238 K accompanied by magnetic and electrical phase-transitions. On the contrary the off-stoichiometric composition does not show any transition and remains cubic Pm-3m down to 80 K. Offstoichiometry induced oxygen-vacancy seems to suppress the cooperative JT distortion and possibly stabilize a G-type antiferromagnetic phase with localized cantedspins. Thus we demonstrate that controlling oxygen stoichiometry is a way of structure/property engineering in electron-doped-like manganites.

Oxygen deficiency induced suppression of JT-distortion and stabilization of chargeordering in La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-d

Structural phase transition studies employing low-temperature transmission electron microscopy, and low-temperature x-ray diffraction have been carried out on nearly stoichiometric (δ=0.01) and off-stoichiometric (δ=0.12) versions of La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ manganite. The nearly stoichiometric La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ under goes a cubic to Jahn-Teller distorted C-type antiferromagnetic tetragonal phase-transition at 260K. For off-stoichiometric La0.2Sr0.8MnO3-δ the Jahn-Teller distorted tetragonal phase transition gets totally suppressed and the basic perovskite lattice remains cubic but shows a charge ordered phase. Stabilization of charge ordered phase in the absence of cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion has been attributed to coulomb-repulsion and Hunds coupling energy. The off-stoichiometric sample shows characteristically different physical properties. This has been realized through transport, magnetic and calorimetric measurements. A smooth crossover from variable range hopping transport to power-law dependence of resistivity (ρ) on temperature (T) i.e. ρ=C.T-α has been realized. This has been attributed to multistep inelastic tunneling through channels involving localized states around oxygen vacancy sites.

Room temperature giant baroresistance and magnetoresistance and its tunability in Pd doped FeRh

We report room temperature giant baro-resistance ($\approx$128\%) in $Fe_{49}(Rh_{0.93}Pd_{0.07})_{51}$. With the application of external pressure and magnetic field the temperature range of giant baro-resistance ($\approx$600\% at 5K and 19.9 kbar and 8 Tesla) and magnetoresistance ($\approx$-85\% at 5K and 8 tesla) can be tuned from 5 K to well above room temperature. As the AFM state is stabilized at room temperature under external pressure, it shows giant room temperature magnetoresistance ($\approx$-55\%) with magnetic field. Due to coupled magnetic and latticel changes, the isothermal change in room temperature resistivity with pressure (in the absence of applied magnetic field) as well as magnetic field (under various constant pressure) can be scaled together to a single curve when plotted as a function of X = T + 12.8*H - 7.2*P.

Temperature evolution of magnetic and transport behavior in 5\textit{d} Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$: Significance of magneto-structural coupling

We have investigated the temperature evolution of magnetism and its interrelation with structural parameters in perovskite-based layered compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which is believed to be a $J_{eff}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator. The structural distortion plays an important role in this material which induces a weak ferromagnetism in otherwise antiferromagnetically ordered magnetic state with transition temperature around 240 K. Interestingly, at low temperature below around 100 K, a change in magnetic moment has been observed. Temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements show sudden changes in structural parameters around 100 K are responsible for this. Resistivity measurements show insulating behavior throughout the temperature range across the magnetic phase transition. The electronic transport can be described with Mott's two-dimensional variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, however, three different temperature ranges are found for VRH, which is a result of varying localization length with temperature. A negative magnetoresistance (MR) has been observed at all temperatures in contrast to positive behavior generally observed in strongly spin-orbit coupled materials. The quadratic field dependence of MR implies a relevance of a quantum interference effect.

Crossover from injection to tunneling conduction mode and associated magneto-resistance in a single $Fe_{3}O_{4}$(111)/$Alq_{3}$/Co spin-valve device

We demonstrate interface energy level engineering, exploiting the modification in energy band structure across Verwey phase transition of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ electrode, in a $Fe_{3}O_{4}$(111)/$Alq_{3}$/Co vertical spin-valve (SV) device. Experimental results on device characteristics I-V) study exhibit a transition in conduction mode from carrier injection to tunneling across Verwey transition temperature ($T_{V}$) of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ electrode. Both giant magneto-resistance (GMR) and tunneling MR (TMR) have been observed in a single SV device as a function of temperature, below and above $T_{V}$, respectively. Appearance of GMR, accompanied by injection limited natural Schottky-like I-V characteristics, provide evidences of spin injection at electrode/$Alq_{3}$ interface and transport through molecular orbitals in this SV device. Features of TMR exhibit significant differences from that of GMR. This is due to the dominant hyperfine-field interaction in the multi-step tunneling regime. We have achieved room-temperature SV operation in our device. A phenomenological model for device operation has been proposed to explain the transition in the conduction mode and associated MR features across $T_{V}$. We propose that the tuning of charge gap at Fermi level across Verwey transition due to charge ordering on the octahedral iron sites of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ results in a corresponding tuning of conduction mode causing this unique cross over from GMR to TMR in this ferrite-based organic SV.

Effect of Strain disorder on the magnetic glassy state in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y = 0.45) thin films

Present study reveals that the free energy landscape of the La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (LPCMO) system could be modified by elastic strain interaction in the epitaxial thin films. Epitaxial LPCMO thin films of various thicknesses are grown on LaAlO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition. With increasing thickness, by virtue of island growth morphology, strain disorder is invoked in thin films during strain relaxation process. The length-scale of phase separation is found to be highly correlated with strain disorder. Magneto-transport measurements demonstrate that coherent strain stabilizes charge ordered insulating phase while strain disorder stabilizes metallic phase. Resistivity under cooling and heating in unequal field (CHUF) protocol exhibits lower value of freezing temperature for strain disordered films compared to bulk system. Raman spectroscopy reveals that the charge ordered insulating and ferromagnetic metallic phases are structurally dissimilar and possess monoclinic and rhombohedral like symmetries respectively. Interfaces between two phases strongly influence low temperature glassy metastable state resulting in different phase separation states in the LPCMO thin films.

Low temperature high magnetic field $^{57}Fe$ M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer study of kinetic arrest in $Hf_{0.77}Ta_{0.23}Fe_2$

Low temperature high magnetic field $^{57}Fe$ M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer measurements were carried out on inter-metallic $Hf_{0.77}Ta_{0.23}Fe_2$ compound by following novel paths in H-T space. The ferromagnetic (FM) fraction at 5K and zero magnetic field is shown to depend on cooling field i.e., higher the field higher is the FM fraction. M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra collected in the presence of 4 Tesla magnetic field shows that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spins cant with respect to the applied magnetic field and hence, contribute to the total bulk magnetization in this compound. The data also show induced magnetic moment even at the 2a site of AFM phase. M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra collected using CHUF (cooling and heating in un-equal magnetic fields) protocol shows re-entrant transition when sample is cooled in zero field and measured during warming in 4 Tesla showing FM state as the equilibrium state. The present work is the first microscopic experimental evidence for the de-vitrification of kinetically arrested magnetic state.

Concentration dependence in kinetic arrest of first order magnetic transition in Ta doped $HfFe_2$

Magnetic behavior of the pseudo-binary alloy $Hf_{1-x}Ta_xFe_2$ has been studied, for which the zero field ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature is tuned near to T=0 K. These alloys show anomalous thermomagnetic irreversibility at low temperature due to kinetic arrest of the first order AFM-FM transition. All the three studied compositions show re-entrant transition in zero field cooled warming curve and anomalous non-monotonic variation of upper critical field in isothermal magnetization. The region in H-T space, where these features of kinetic arrest manifest themselves, increases with increasing Ta concentration.

Influence of local structure on magnetic properties of Layered Cobaltites PrBaCo_2O{5+δ}, δ> 0.5

The effect of local structure on the magnetic and transport properties of the layered perovskites has been investigated. Effect of strain on phase separation and de-vitrification of magnetic glass state in thin films of La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.45)

We present our study of effect of substrate induced strain on the La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.45), thin films grown on LaAlO3, NdGaO3 and SrTiO3 susbtrates that show large scale phase separation. It is observed that unstrained films grown on NdGaO3 behave quite similar to bulk material but the strained film grown on SrTiO3 show melting of insulating phase to metallic phase at low temperatures. However, the large scale phase separation and metastable glass-like state is observed in all the films despite difference in substrate induced strain. The measurements of resistivity as a function of temperature under cooling and heating in unequal field (CHUF) protocol elucidates the presence of glass-like meta-stable phase generated due to kinetic arrest of first order transformation in all the films. Like structural glasses, these magnetic glass-like phase shows evidence of devitrification of the arrested charge order-antiferromagnetic insulator (CO-AFI) phase to equilibrium ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) phase with isothermal increase of magnetic field and/or iso-field warming. These measurements also clearly brought out the equilibrium ground state of this system to be FMM and metastable glass-like phase to be AFI phase.

Enhancement of Jc by Hf -Doping in the Superconductor MgB2: A Hyperfine Interaction Study

Measurements of the critical current density (Jc) by magnetization and the upper critical field (Hc2) by magnetoresistance have been performed for hafnium-doped MgB2. There has been a remarkable enhancement of Jc as compared to that by ion irradiation without any appreciable decrease in Tc, which is beneficial from the point of view of applications. The irreversibility line extracted from Jc shows an upward shift. In addition, there has been an increase in the upper critical field which indicates that Hf partially substitutes for Mg. Hyperfine interaction parameters obtained from time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) measurements revealed the formation of HfB and HfB2 phases along with the substitution of Hf. A possible explanation is given for the role of these species in the enhancement of Jc in MgB2 superconductor.
