Tautological relations via r-spin structures

Relations among tautological classes on the moduli space of stable curves are obtained via the study of Witten's r-spin theory for higher r. In order to calculate the quantum product, a new formula relating the r-spin correlators in genus 0 to the representation theory of sl2 is proven. The Givental-Teleman classification of CohFTs is used at two special semisimple points of the associated Frobenius manifold. At the first semisimple point, the R-matrix is exactly solved in terms of hypergeometric series. As a result, an explicit formula for Witten's r-spin class is obtained (along with tautological relations in higher degrees). As an application, the r=4 relations are used to bound the Betti numbers of the tautological ring of the moduli of nonsingular curves. At the second semisimple point, the form of the R-matrix implies a polynomiality property in r of Witten's r-spin class. In the Appendix (with F. Janda), a conjecture relating the r=0 limit of Witten's r-spin class to the class of the moduli space of holomorphic differentials is presented.

Virasoro constraints for stable pairs on toric 3-folds

Using new explicit formulas for the stationary GW/PT descendent correspondence for nonsingular projective toric 3-folds, we show that the correspondence intertwines the Virasoro constraints in Gromov-Witten theory for stable maps with the Virasoro constraints for stable pairs. Since the Virasoro constraints in Gromov-Witten theory are known to hold in the toric case, we establish the stationary Virasoro constraints for the theory of stable pairs on toric 3-folds. As a consequence, new Virasoro constraints for tautological integrals over Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces are also obtained.

13/2 ways of counting curves

In the past 20 years, compactifications of the families of curves in algebraic varieties X have been studied via stable maps, Hilbert schemes, stable pairs, unramified maps, and stable quotients. Each path leads to a different enumeration of curves. A common thread is the use of a 2-term deformation/obstruction theory to define a virtual fundamental class. The richest geometry occurs when X is a nonsingular projective variety of dimension 3. We survey here the 13/2 principal ways to count curves with special attention to the 3-fold case. The different theories are linked by a web of conjectural relationships which we highlight. Our goal is to provide a guide for graduate students looking for an elementary route into the subject.

A calculus for the moduli space of curves

This article accompanies my lecture at the 2015 AMS summer institute in algebraic geometry in Salt Lake City. I survey the recent advances in the study of tautological classes on the moduli spaces of curves. After discussing the Faber-Zagier relations on the moduli spaces of nonsingular curves and the kappa rings of the moduli spaces of curves of compact type, I present Pixton's proposal for a complete calculus of tautological classes on the moduli spaces of stable curves. Several open questions are discussed. An effort has been made to condense a great deal of mathematics into as few pages as possible with the hope that the reader will follow through to the end.

Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for the quintic 3-fold

We use the Gromov-Witten/Pairs descendent correspondence for toric 3-folds and degeneration arguments to establish the GW/P correspondence for several compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds (including all CY complete intersections in products of projective spaces). A crucial aspect of the proof is the study of the GW/P correspondence for descendents in relative geometries. Projective bundles over surfaces relative to a section play a special role. The GW/P correspondence for Calabi-Yau complete intersections provides a structure result for the Gromov-Witten invariants in a fixed curve class. After change of variables, the Gromov-Witten series is a rational function in the variable -q=exp(iu) invariant under q => 1/q.

Notes on the proof of the KKV conjecture

The Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture expresses the Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces (and K3-fibred 3-folds in fibre classes) in terms of modular forms. Its recent proof gives the first non-toric geometry in dimension greater than 1 where Gromov-Witten theory is exactly solved in all genera. We survey the various steps in the proof. The MNOP correspondence and a new Pairs/Noether-Lefschetz correspondence for K3-fibred 3-folds transform the Gromov-Witten problem into a calculation of the full stable pairs theory of a local K3-fibred 3-fold. The stable pairs calculation is then carried out via degeneration, localisation, vanishing results, and new multiple cover formulae.

The Chern character of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of stable curves

We prove an explicit formula for the total Chern character of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of pointed stable curves in terms of tautological classes. The Chern characters of the Verlinde bundles define a semisimple CohFT (the ranks, given by the Verlinde formula, determine a semisimple fusion algebra). According to Teleman's classification of semisimple CohFTs, there exists an element of Givental's group transforming the fusion algebra into the CohFT. We determine the element using the first Chern class of the Verlinde bundle on the moduli space of nonsingular curves and the projective flatness of the Hitchin connection.

Curve counting on K3 x E, the Igusa cusp form chi_{10}, and descendent integration

Let S be a nonsingular projective K3 surface. Motivated by the study of the Gromov-Witten theory of the Hilbert scheme of points of S, we conjecture a formula for the Gromov-Witten theory (in all curve classes) of the Calabi-Yau 3-fold S x E where E is an elliptic curve. In the primitive case, our conjecture is expressed in terms of the Igusa cusp form chi_{10} and matches a prediction via heterotic duality by Katz, Klemm, and Vafa. In imprimitive cases, our conjecture suggests a new structure for the complete theory of descendent integration for K3 surfaces. Via the Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence, a conjecture for the reduced stable pairs theory of S x E is also presented. Speculations about the motivic stable pairs theory of S x E are made. The reduced Gromov-Witten theory of the Hilbert scheme of points of S is much richer than S x E. The 2-point function of Hilb(S,d) determines a matrix with trace equal to the partition function of S x E. A conjectural form for the full matrix is given.

Curves on K3 surfaces and modular forms

We study the virtual geometry of the moduli spaces of curves and sheaves on K3 surfaces in primitive classes. Equivalences relating the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces to characteristic numbers of stable pairs moduli spaces are proven. As a consequence, we prove the Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture evaluating $λ_g$ integrals (in all genera) in terms of explicit modular forms. Indeed, all K3 invariants in primitive classes are shown to be governed by modular forms. The method of proof is by degeneration to elliptically fibered rational surfaces. New formulas relating reduced virtual classes on K3 surfaces to standard virtual classes after degeneration are needed for both maps and sheaves. We also prove a Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for toric 3-folds. Our approach uses a result of Kiem and Li to produce reduced classes. In Appendix A, we answer a number of questions about the relationship between the Kiem-Li approach, traditional virtual cycles, and symmetric obstruction theories. The interplay between the boundary geometry of the moduli spaces of curves, K3 surfaces, and modular forms is explored in Appendix B by A. Pixton.

Descendent theory for stable pairs on toric 3-folds

We prove the rationality of the descendent partition function for stable pairs on nonsingular toric 3-folds. The method uses a geometric reduction of the 2- and 3-leg descendent vertices to the 1-leg case. As a consequence, we prove the rationality of the relative stable pairs partition functions for all log Calabi-Yau geometries of the form (X,K3) where X is a nonsingular toric 3-fold.

Descendents on local curves: Stationary theory

The stable pairs theory of local curves in 3-folds (equivariant with respect to the scaling 2-torus) is studied with stationary descendent insertions. Reduction rules are found to lower descendents when higher than the degree. Factorization then yields a simple proof of rationality in the stationary case and a proof of the functional equation related to inverting q. The method yields an effective determination of stationary descendent integrals. Particular descendent series in the cap geometry play a special role and are calculated exactly using the stable pairs vertex and an analysis of the solution of the quantum differential equation for the Hilbert scheme of points of the plane.

Gromov-Witten theory and Noether-Lefschetz theory

Noether-Lefschetz divisors in the moduli of K3 surfaces are the loci corresponding to Picard rank at least 2. We relate the degrees of the Noether-Lefschetz divisors in 1-parameter families of K3 surfaces to the Gromov-Witten theory of the 3-fold total space. The reduced K3 theory and the Yau-Zaslow formula play an important role. We use results of Borcherds and Kudla-Millson for O(2,19) lattices to determine the Noether-Lefschetz degrees in classical families of K3 surfaces of degrees 2, 4, 6 and 8. For the quartic K3 surfaces, the Noether-Lefschetz degrees are proven to be the Fourier coefficients of an explicitly computed modular form of weight 21/2 and level 8. The interplay with mirror symmetry is discussed. We close with a conjecture on the Picard ranks of moduli spaces of K3 surfaces.

Gromov-Witten/Pairs descendent correspondence for toric 3-folds

We construct a fully equivariant correspondence between Gromov-Witten and stable pairs descendent theories for toric 3-folds X. Our method uses geometric constraints on descendents, A_n surfaces, and the topological vertex. The rationality of the stable pairs descendent theory plays a crucial role in the definition of the correspondence. We prove our correspondence has a non-equivariant limit. As a result of the construction, we prove an explicit non-equivariant stationary descendent correspondence for X (conjectured previously by MNOP). Using descendent methods, we establish the relative GW/Pairs correspondence for X/D in several basic new log Calabi-Yau geometries. Among the consequences is a rationality constraint for non-equivariant descendent Gromov-Witten series for P^3.

Relations in the tautological ring

These notes cover our series of three lectures at Humboldt University in Berlin for the October 2010 conference "Intersection theory on moduli space" (organized by G. Farkas). The topic concerns relations among the kappa classes in the tautological ring of the moduli space of genus g curves. After a discussion of classical constructions in Wick form, we derive an explicit set of relations obtained from the virtual geometry of the moduli space of stable quotients. In a series of steps, the stable quotient relations are transformed to simpler and simpler forms. Our final result establishes a previously conjectural set of tautological relations proposed a decade ago by Faber-Zagier. The Faber-Zagier relations are defined using g and a single series in one variable with coefficients (6i)!/(3i)!(2i)!. Whether these relations span the complete set of relations among the kappa classes on the moduli space of genus g curves is an interesting question.

Tautological and non-tautological cohomology of the moduli space of curves

After a short exposition of the basic properties of the tautological ring of the moduli space of genus g Deligne-Mumford stable curves with n markings, we explain three methods of detecting non-tautological classes in cohomology. The first is via curve counting over finite fields. The second is by obtaining length bounds on the action of the symmetric group S_n on tautological classes. The third is via classical boundary geometry. Several new non-tautological classes are found.

The kappa classes on the moduli spaces of curves

In the past few years, substantial progress has been made in the understanding of the algebra of kappa classes on the moduli spaces of curves. My goal here is to provide a short introduction to the new results. Along the way, I will discuss several open questions. The article accompanies my talk at "A celebration of algebraic geometry" at Harvard in honor of the 60th birthday of J. Harris.

The moduli space of stable quotients

A moduli space of stable quotients of the rank n trivial sheaf on stable curves is introduced. Over nonsingular curves, the moduli space is Grothendieck's Quot scheme. Over nodal curves, a relative construction is made to keep the torsion of the quotient away from the singularities. New compactifications of classical spaces arise naturally: a nonsingular and irreducible compactification of the moduli of maps from genus 1 curves to projective space is obtained. Localization on the moduli of stable quotients leads to new relations in the tautological ring generalizing Brill-Noether constructions. The moduli space of stable quotients is proven to carry a canonical 2-term obstruction theory and thus a virtual class. The resulting system of descendent invariants is proven to equal the Gromov-Witten theory of the Grassmannian in all genera. Stable quotients can also be used to study Calabi-Yau geometries. The conifold is calculated to agree with stable maps. Several questions about the behavior of stable quotients for arbitrary targets are raised.

Algebraic cobordism of bundles on varieties

The double point relation defines a natural theory of algebraic cobordism for bundles on varieties. We construct a simple basis (over the rationals) of the corresponding cobordism groups over Spec(C) for all dimensions of varieties and ranks of bundles. The basis consists of split bundles over products of projective spaces. Moreover, we prove the full theory for bundles on varieties is an extension of scalars of standard algebraic cobordism.

Abelian Hurwitz-Hodge integrals

Hodge classes on the moduli space of admissible covers with monodromy group G are associated to irreducible representations of G. We evaluate all linear Hodge integrals over moduli spaces of admissible covers with abelian monodromy in terms of multiplication in an associated wreath group algebra. In case G is cyclic and the representation is faithful, the evaluation is in terms of double Hurwitz numbers. In case G is trivial, the formula specializes to the well-known result of Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein for linear Hodge integrals over the moduli space of curves in terms of single Hurwitz numbers.

The 3-fold vertex via stable pairs

The theory of stable pairs in the derived category yields an enumerative geometry of curves in 3-folds. We evaluate the equivariant vertex for stable pairs on toric 3-folds in terms of weighted box counting. In the toric Calabi-Yau case, the result simplifies to a new form of pure box counting. The conjectural equivalence with the DT vertex predicts remarkable identities. The equivariant vertex governs primary insertions in the theory of stable pairs for toric varieties. We consider also the descendent vertex and conjecture the complete rationality of the descendent theory for stable pairs.
