Cyclotron Radiation Signal Characterization in Resonant Cavities for the Project 8 Neutrino Mass Experiment

Many experimental methods in physics require understanding radiation from single particles into non-trivial electromagnetic mode structures. Such characterization is critical for Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES), an advancing new measurement technique that has the potential to greatly benefit fundamental physics measurements. In CRES, charged particles emit cyclotron radiation at frequencies that provide their energy measurement. As a notable example, the Project 8 experiment aims to kinematically infer the neutrino mass by measuring the energies of electrons emitted in tritium beta decay using CRES. In near-term realizations of Project 8, resonant cylindrical cavities will be used for CRES readout, in a configuration with a magnetic field oriented along the symmetry axis, and electrons following helical cyclotron trajectories confined to the cavity interior. The physics of electromagnetic radiation in these environments is complicated, since it involves both the motion of the emitting particle and the mode structure imposed by the cavity. In this work, we derive and validate an analytic model for how an oscillating, trapped electron radiates into cavity modes, and the power and frequency content of the radiation that can be read out from these events. These results can be used to guide the design of cavities for future CRES and other experiments.

The Project 8 Neutrino Mass Experiment

Measurements of the $β^-$ spectrum of tritium give the most precise direct limits on neutrino mass. Project 8 will investigate neutrino mass using Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES) with an atomic tritium source. CRES is a new experimental technique that has the potential to surmount the systematic and statistical limitations of current-generation direct measurement methods. Atomic tritium avoids an irreducible systematic uncertainty associated with the final states populated by the decay of molecular tritium. Project 8 will proceed in a phased approach toward a goal of 40 meV/c$^2$ neutrino-mass sensitivity.

The Filter Imager SuFI and the Image Stabilization and Light Distribution System ISLiD of the Sunrise Balloon-Borne Observatory: Instrument Description

We describe the design of the Sunrise Filter Imager (SuFI) and the Image Stabilization and Light Distribution (ISLiD) unit onboard the Sunrise balloon borne solar observatory. This contribution provides the necessary information which is relevant to understand the instruments working principles, the relevant technical data, and the necessary information about calibration issues directly related to the science data.

Natural linewidth analysis of d-band photoemission from Ag(110)

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved study of photoemission linewidths observed for Ag(110). A careful data analysis yields k$-resolved upper limits for the inverse inelastic lifetimes of $d$-holes at the X-point of the bulk band structure. At the upper $d$-band edge the hole-lifetime is $τ_h \geq 22 $fs, i.e. more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted for a free-electron gas. Following calculations for $d$-hole dynamics in Cu (I.\ Campillo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., in press) we interpret the lifetime enhancement by a small scattering cross-section of $d$- and $sp$-states below the Fermi level. With increasing distance to $E_F$ the $d$-hole lifetimes get shorter because of the rapidly increasing density of d-states and contributions of intra-$d$-band scattering processes, but remain clearly above free-electron-model predictions.

The topology of the Fermi surface of Bi2212 from angle resolved photoemission

We present a study of the topology of the normal state Fermi surface (FS) of the high Tc superconductor Bi2212 using angle-resolved photoemission. We present FS mapping experiments, recorded using unpolarised radiation with high (E,k) resolution, and an extremely dense sampling of k-space. In addition, synchrotron radiation-based ARPES has been used to prove the energy independence of the FS as seen by photoemission. We resolve the current controversy regarding the normal state FS in Bi2212. The true picture is simple, self-consistent and robust: the FS is hole-like, with the form of rounded tubes centred on the corners of the Brillouin zone. Two further types of features are also clearly observed: shadow FSs, and diffraction replicas of the main FS caused by passage of the photoelectrons through the modulated Bi-O planes.
