When a Stochastic Exponential is a True Martingale. Extension of a Method of Bene^s

Let $\mathfrak{z}$ be a stochastic exponential, i.e., $\mathfrak{z}_t=1+\int_0^t\mathfrak{z}_{s-}dM_s$, of a local martingale $M$ with jumps $\triangle M_t>-1$. Then $\mathfrak{z}$ is a nonnegative local martingale with $\E\mathfrak{z}_t\le 1$. If $\E\mathfrak{z}_T= 1$, then $\mathfrak{z}$ is a martingale on the time interval $[0,T]$. Martingale property plays an important role in many applications. It is therefore of interest to give natural and easy verifiable conditions for the martingale property. In this paper, the property $\E\mathfrak{z}_{_T}=1$ is verified with the so-called linear growth conditions involved in the definition of parameters of $M$, proposed by Girsanov \cite{Girs}. These conditions generalize the Beneŝ idea, \cite{Benes}, and avoid the technology of piece-wise approximation. These conditions are applicable even if Novikov, \cite{Novikov}, and Kazamaki, \cite{Kaz}, conditions fail. They are effective for Markov processes that explode, Markov processes with jumps and also non Markov processes. Our approach is different to recently published papers \cite{CFY} and \cite{MiUr}.

The Euler-Maruyama approximations for the CEV model

The CEV model is given by the stochastic differential equation $X_t=X_0+\int_0^tμX_sds+\int_0^tσ(X^+_s)^pdW_s$, $\frac{1}{2}\le p<1$. It features a non-Lipschitz diffusion coefficient and gets absorbed at zero with a positive probability. We show the weak convergence of Euler-Maruyama approximations $X_t^n$ to the process $X_t$, $0\le t\le T$, in the Skorokhod metric. We give a new approximation by continuous processes which allows to relax some technical conditions in the proof of weak convergence in \cite{HZa} done in terms of discrete time martingale problem. We calculate ruin probabilities as an example of such approximation. We establish that the ruin probability evaluated by simulations is not guaranteed to converge to the theoretical one, because the point zero is a discontinuity point of the limiting distribution. To establish such convergence we use the Levy metric, and also confirm the convergence numerically. Although the result is given for the specific model, our method works in a more general case of non-Lipschitz diffusion with absorbtion.

Large deviations for a scalar diffusion in random environment

Let $σ(u)$, $u\in \mathbb{R}$ be an ergodic stationary Markov chain, taking a finite number of values $a_1,...,a_m$, and $b(u)=g(σ(u))$, where $g$ is a bounded and measurable function. We consider the diffusion type process $$ dX^ε_t = b(X^ε_t/ε)dt + ε^κσ\big(X^ε_t/ε\big)dB_t, t\le T $$ subject to $X^ε_0=x_0$, where $ε$ is a small positive parameter, $B_t$ is a Brownian motion, independent of $σ$, and $κ> 0$ is a fixed constant. We show that for $κ<1/6$, the family $\{X^ε_t\}_{ε\to 0}$ satisfies the Large Deviations Principle (LDP) of the Freidlin-Wentzell type with the constant drift $\mathbf{b}$ and the diffusion $\mathbf{a}$, given by $$ \mathbf{b}=\sum\limits_{i=1}^m\dfrac{g(a_i)}{a^2_i}π_i\Big/ \sum\limits_{i=1}^m\dfrac{1}{a^2_i}π_i, \quad \mathbf{a}=1\Big/\sum\limits_{i=1}^m\dfrac{1}{a^2_i}π_i, $$ where $\{π_1,...,π_m\}$ is the invariant distribution of the chain $σ(u)$.

The Freidlin-Wentzell LDP with rapidly growing coefficients

The Large Deviations Principle (LDP) is verified for a homogeneous diffusion process with respect to a Brownian motion $B_t$, $$ X^\eps_t=x_0+\int_0^tb(X^\eps_s)ds+ \eps\int_0^tσ(X^\eps_s)dB_s, $$ where $b(x)$ and $σ(x)$ are are locally Lipschitz functions with super linear growth. We assume that the drift is directed towards the origin and the growth rates of the drift and diffusion terms are properly balanced. Nonsingularity of $a=σσ^*(x)$ is not required.

Examples of moderate deviation principle for diffusion processes

Taking into account some likeness of moderate deviations (MD) and central limit theorems (CLT), we develop an approach, which made a good showing in CLT, for MD analysis of a family $$ S^κ_t=\frac{1}{t^κ}\int_0^tH(X_s)ds, \ t\to\infty $$ for an ergodic diffusion process $X_t$ under $0.5<κ<1$ and appropriate $H$. We mean a decomposition with ``corrector'': $$ \frac{1}{t^κ}\int_0^tH(X_s)ds={\rm corrector}+\frac{1}{t^κ}\underbrace{M_t}_{\rm martingale}. $$ and show that, as in the CLT analysis, the corrector is negligible but in the MD scale, and the main contribution in the MD brings the family ``$ \frac{1}{t^κ}M_t, t\to\infty. $'' Starting from Bayer and Freidlin, \cite{BF}, and finishing by Wu's papers \cite{Wu1}-\cite{WuH}, in the MD study Laplace's transform dominates. In the paper, we replace the Laplace technique by one, admitting to give the conditions, providing the MD, in terms of ``drift-diffusion'' parameters and $H$. However, a verification of these conditions heavily depends on a specificity of a diffusion model. That is why the paper is named ``Examples ...''.

Moderate deviation principle for ergodic Markov chain. Lipschitz summands

For ${1/2}<α<1$, we propose the MDP analysis for family $$ S^α_n=\frac{1}{n^α}\sum_{i=1}^nH(X_{i-1}), n\ge 1, $$ where $(X_n)_{n\ge 0}$ be a homogeneous ergodic Markov chain, $X_n\in \mathbb{R}^d$, when the spectrum of operator $P_x$ is continuous. The vector-valued function $H$ is not assumed to be bounded but the Lipschitz continuity of $H$ is required. The main helpful tools in our approach are Poisson's equation and Stochastic Exponential; the first enables to replace the original family by $\frac{1}{n^α}M_n$ with a martingale $M_n$ while the second to avoid the direct Laplace transform analysis.

MDP for integral functionals of fast and slow processes with averaging

We establish large deviation principle (LDP) for the family of vector-valued random processes $(X^ε,Y^ε),ε\to 0$ defined as $$ X^ε_t=\frac{1}{ε^κ}\int_0^t H(ξ^ε_s,Y^ε_s)ds, dY^ε_t=F(ξ^ε_t,Y^ε_t)dt+ Dε^{1/2-κ}G(ξ^ε_t,Y^ε_t)dW_t,$$ where $W_t$ is Wiener process and $ξ^ε_t$ is fast ergodic diffusion. We show that, under $κ<{1/2}$ or less and Veretennikov-Khasminskii type condition for fast diffusion, the LDP holds with rate function of Freidlin-Wentzell's type.
