Magnetoconductivity of Dirac semimetals and chiral magnetic effect from Keldysh technique

Negative magnetoresistance in Dirac semimetals is typically considered as a manifestation of chiral magnetic effect (CME). The relation between these two phenomena has the status of a hypothesis and is based on sequence of assumptions. We rely on the Keldysh technique of non-equilibrium theory. It allows us to investigate the accumulation of axial charge -- the process that involves both chiral anomaly and relaxation followed by the energy dissipation. We consider the case of strong magnetic field and calculate directly both axial charge density and electric conductivity taking into account both scattering on impurities and interaction with phonons. We obtain the same dependence of axial charge density on electric and magnetic fields, and the same dependence of electric current on axial charge density as the standard heuristic CME calculation. This confirms (in the limit of strong magnetic fields) the hypothesis that the origin of magnetoconductivity in Dirac semimetals is the CME.

Quark-gluon plasma speed of sound in magnetic field

A non-perturbative method of Field Correlators (FCM) is applied to study speed of sound in quark-gluon plasma at temperatures above the deconfinement transition 1<T/T_c<3 (Tc=160 MeV) under a uniform magnetic field up to eB ~ 1 GeV^2. The speed of sound in N_f=2+1 QCD quark-gluon plasma is found to exceed the conformal limit (1/3) at very large magnetic field strengths eB>0.5 GeV^2. At large temperatures, the speed of sound tends to the conformal limit; low-temperature behavior demonstrates inverse magnetic catalysis. The effect of magnetic field on the speed of sound in quark-gluon plasma is found to be negligible in any existing Heavy Ion Collision experiment, including \sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC.

Dense Quark-Gluon Plasma in strong magnetic fields

A non-perturbative (np) method of Field Correlators (FCM) was applied to study QCD at temperatures above the deconfinement transition ($1<T/T_c<3,~T_c\sim0.16~GeV$) and nonzero baryon densities (baryon chemical potential $μ_B<0.5~GeV$) in an external uniform magnetic field ($eB<0.5~GeV^2$). Within FCM, the np high-temperature dynamics is embodied in the Polyakov loop and in the Debye mass due to the Color-Magnetic Confinement. Analytic expressions for quark pressure and magnetic susceptibility were obtained. The expressions were represented as series and in integral form. Magnetic susceptibility was found to increase rapidly with temperature and slowly with density. The results at the zero density limit are in agreement with lattice data.

Schwinger pair creation in Dirac semimetals in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields

We discuss the Schwinger pair creation process for the system of massless Dirac fermions in the presence of constant external magnetic and electric fields. The pair production rate remains finite unlike the vacuum decay rate. In the recently discovered Dirac semimetals, where the massless Dirac fermions emerge, this pair production may be observed experimentally through the transport properties. We estimate its contribution to the ordinary conductivity of the semimetals.
