Hybrid Vector Message Passing for Generalized Bilinear Factorization

In this paper, we propose a new message passing algorithm that utilizes hybrid vector message passing (HVMP) to solve the generalized bilinear factorization (GBF) problem. The proposed GBF-HVMP algorithm integrates expectation propagation (EP) and variational message passing (VMP) via variational free energy minimization, yielding tractable Gaussian messages. Furthermore, GBF-HVMP enables vector/matrix variables rather than scalar ones in message passing, resulting in a loop-free Bayesian network that improves convergence. Numerical results show that GBF-HVMP significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of NMSE performance and computational complexity.

RIS-Assisted Joint Uplink Communication and Imaging: Phase Optimization and Bayesian Echo Decoupling

Achieving integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) via uplink transmission is challenging due to the unknown waveform and the coupling of communication and sensing echoes. In this paper, a joint uplink communication and imaging system is proposed for the first time, where a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is used to manipulate the electromagnetic signals for echo decoupling at the base station (BS). Aiming to enhance the transmission gain in desired directions and generate required radiation pattern in the region of interest (RoI), a phase optimization problem for RIS is formulated, which is high dimensional and nonconvex with discrete constraints. To tackle this problem, a back propagation based phase design scheme for both continuous and discrete phase models is developed. Moreover, the echo decoupling problem is tackled using the Bayesian method with the factor graph technique, where the problem is represented by a graph model which consists of difficult local functions. Based on the graph model, a message-passing algorithm is derived, which can efficiently cooperate with the adaptive sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) to achieve joint communication and imaging. Numerical results show that the proposed method approaches the relevant lower bound asymptotically, and the communication performance can be enhanced with the utilization of imaging echoes.

Joint Channel Estimation and Signal Recovery for RIS-Empowered Multi-User Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as a promising candidate for energy-efficient solutions in future wireless networks. Their dynamic and lowpower configuration enables coverage extension, massive connectivity, and low-latency communications. Due to a large number of unknown variables referring to the RIS unit elements and the transmitted signals, channel estimation and signal recovery in RIS-based systems are the ones of the most critical technical challenges. To address this problem, we focus on the RIS-assisted wireless communication system and present two joint channel estimation and signal recovery schemes based on message passing algorithms in this paper. Specifically, the proposed bidirectional scheme applies the Taylor series expansion and Gaussian approximation to simplify the sum-product procedure in the formulated problem. In addition, the inner iteration that adopts two variants of approximate message passing algorithms is incorporated to ensure robustness and convergence. Two ambiguities removal methods are also discussed in this paper. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes show the superiority over the state-of-art benchmark method. We also provide insights on the impact of different RIS parameter settings on the proposed schemes.

Unitary Approximate Message Passing for Matrix Factorization

We consider matrix factorization (MF) with certain constraints, which finds wide applications in various areas. Leveraging variational inference (VI) and unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop a Bayesian approach to MF with an efficient message passing implementation, called UAMPMF. With proper priors imposed on the factor matrices, UAMPMF can be used to solve many problems that can be formulated as MF, such as non negative matrix factorization, dictionary learning, compressive sensing with matrix uncertainty, robust principal component analysis, and sparse matrix factorization. Extensive numerical examples are provided to show that UAMPMF significantly outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of recovery accuracy, robustness and computational complexity.

Efficient Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided MIMO Communications with Unitary Approximate Message Passing

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is very promising for wireless networks to achieve high energy efficiency, extended coverage, improved capacity, massive connectivity, etc. To unleash the full potentials of RIS-aided communications, acquiring accurate channel state information is crucial, which however is very challenging. For RIS-aided multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communications, the existing channel estimation methods have computational complexity growing rapidly with the number of RIS units $N$ (e.g., in the order of $N^2$ or $N^3$) and/or have special requirements on the matrices involved (e.g., the matrices need to be sparse for algorithm convergence to achieve satisfactory performance), which hinder their applications. In this work, instead of using the conventional signal model in the literature, we derive a new signal model obtained through proper vectorization and reduction operations. Then, leveraging the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop a more efficient channel estimator that has complexity linear with $N$ and does not have special requirements on the relevant matrices, thanks to the robustness of UAMP. These facilitate the applications of the proposed algorithm to a general RIS-aided MIMO system with a larger $N$. Moreover, extensive numerical results show that the proposed estimator delivers much better performance and/or requires significantly less number of training symbols, thereby leading to notable reductions in both training overhead and latency.

Experimental observation of non-Abelian earring nodal links in phononic crystals

Nodal lines are symmetry-protected one-dimensional band degeneracies in momentum space, which can appear in numerous topological configurations such as nodal rings, chains, links, and knots. Very recently, non-Abelian topological physics has been proposed in space-time inversion (PT) symmetric systems, and attract widespread attention. One of the most special configurations in non-Abelian system is the earring nodal link, composing of a nodal chain linking with an isolated nodal line, is signature of non-Abelian topology and cannot be elucidated using Abelian topological classifications. However, the earring nodal links have not been yet observed in real system. Here we design the phononic crystals with earring nodal links, and verify its non-Abelian topologicial charge in full-wave simulations. Moreover, we experimentally observed two different kinds of earring nodal links by measuring the band structures for two phononic crystals. Specifically, we found that the order of the nodal chain and line can switch after band inversion but their link cannot be severed. Our work provides experimental evidence for phenomena unique to non-Abelian band topology and our simple acoustic system provides a convenient platform for studying non-Abelian charges.

Four-band non-Abelian topological insulator and its experimental realization

Very recently, increasing attention has been focused on non-Abelian topological charges, e.g. the quaternion group Q8. Different from Abelian topological band insulators, these systems involve multiple tangled bulk bandgaps and support non-trivial edge states that manifest the non-Abelian topological features. Furthermore, a system with even or odd number of bands will exhibit significant difference in non-Abelian topological classifications. Up to now, there is scant research investigating the even-band non-Abelian topological insulators. Here, we both theoretically explored and experimentally realized a four-band PT (inversion and time-reversal) symmetric system, where two new classes of topological charges as well as edge states are comprehensively studied. We illustrate their difference from four-dimensional rotation senses on the stereographically projected Clifford tori. We show the evolution of bulk topology by extending the 1D Hamiltonian onto a 2D plane and provide the accompanying edge state distributions following an analytical method. Our work presents an exhaustive study of four-band non-Abelian topological insulators and paves the way to other even band systems.

Iterative Detection for Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation with Unitary Approximate Message Passing

The orthogonal-time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation has emerged as a promising modulation scheme for high mobility wireless communications. To harvest the time and frequency diversity promised by OTFS, some promising detectors, especially message passing based ones, have been developed by taking advantage of the sparsity of the channel in the delay-Doppler domain. However, when the number of channel paths is relatively large or fractional Doppler {shifts have} to be considered, the complexity of existing detectors is a concern, and the message passing based detectors may suffer from performance loss due to the short loops involved in message passing. In this work, we investigate the design of OTFS detectors based on the approximate message passing (AMP). In particular, {leveraging the unitary AMP (UAMP), we design new detectors that enjoy} the structure of the channel matrix and allow efficient implementation. In addition, the estimation of noise variance is incorporated into the UAMP-based detectors. Thanks to the robustness of UAMP relative to AMP, the UAMP-based detectors deliver superior performance, and outperform state-of-the-art detectors significantly. We also investigate iterative joint detection and decoding in a coded OTFS system, where the OTFS detectors are integrated into a powerful turbo receiver, leading to considerable performance gains.

Approximate Message Passing with Unitary Transformation for Robust Bilinear Recovery

Recently, several promising approximate message passing (AMP) based algorithms have been developed for bilinear recovery with model $\boldsymbol{Y}=\sum_{k=1}^K b_k \boldsymbol{A}_k \boldsymbol{C} +\boldsymbol{W} $, where $\{b_k\}$ and $\boldsymbol{C}$ are jointly recovered with known $\boldsymbol{A}_k$ from the noisy measurements $\boldsymbol{Y}$. The bilinear recover problem has many applications such as dictionary learning, self-calibration, compressive sensing with matrix uncertainty, etc. In this work, we propose a new bilinear recovery algorithm based on AMP with unitary transformation. It is shown that, compared to the state-of-the-art message passing based algorithms, the proposed algorithm is much more robust and faster, leading to remarkably better performance.

Massive MIMO As an Extreme Learning Machine

This work shows that a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) forms a natural extreme learning machine (ELM). The receive antennas at the base station serve as the hidden nodes of the ELM, and the low-resolution ADCs act as the ELM activation function. By adding random biases to the received signals and optimizing the ELM output weights, the system can effectively tackle hardware impairments, such as the nonlinearity of power amplifiers and the low-resolution ADCs. Moreover, the fast adaptive capability of ELM allows the design of an adaptive receiver to address time-varying effects of MIMO channels. Simulations demonstrate the promising performance of the ELM-based receiver compared to conventional receivers in dealing with hardware impairments.

Observation of non-Abelian nodal links in photonics

In crystals, two bands may cross each other and form degeneracies along a closed loop in the three-dimensional momentum space, which is called nodal line. Nodal line degeneracy can be designed to exhibit various configurations such as nodal rings, chains, links and knots. Very recently, non-Abelian band topology was proposed in nodal link systems, where the nodal lines formed by consecutive pairs of bands exhibit interesting braiding structures and the underlying topological charges are described by quaternions. Here, we experimentally demonstrate non-Abelian nodal links in a biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial. The linked nodal lines threading through each other are formed by the crossings between three adjacent bands. Based on the non-Abelian charges, we further analyze various admissible nodal link configurations for the three-band system. On the interface between the metamaterial and air, surface bound states in the continuum (BICs) are observed, which serves as the symmetry-enforced derivative of drumhead surface states from the linked nodal lines. Our work serves as a direct observation of the global topological structures of nodal links, and provides a platform for studying non-Abelian topological charge in the momentum space.

Optical pulling using topologically protected one-way-transport surface-arc waves

This paper proposes a new method to achieve robust optical pulling of particles by using an air waveguide sandwiched between two chiral hyperbolic metamaterials. The pulling force is induced by mode conversion between a pair of one-way-transport surface-arc waves supported on the two metamaterial surfaces of the waveguide. The surface arcs bridge the momentum gaps between isolated bulk equifrequency surfaces (EFSs) and are topologically protected by the nontrivial Chern numbers of the EFSs. When an incident surface-arc wave with a relatively small wavenumber $k_{x1}$ is scattered by the particle, a part of its energy is transferred to the other surface-arc mode with $k_{x2}(>k_{x1}). Because the electromagnetic wave acquires an additional forward momentum from the particle proportional to $k_{x2}-k_{x1}$ during this process, the particle will always be subjected to an optical pulling force irrespective of its material, shape and size. Since the chiral surface-arc waves are immune to backscattering from local disorders and the metamaterials are isotropic in the xy plane, robust optical pulling can be achieved in a curved air waveguide and can go beyond standard optical pulling mechanisms which are limited to pull in a straight-line.

Topological one-way large-area waveguide states in magnetic photonic crystals

We have theoretically and experimentally achieved large-area one-way transport by using heterostructures consisting of a domain of an ordinary photonic crystal (PC) sandwiched between two domains of magnetic PCs. The non-magnetized domain carries two orthogonal one-way waveguide states which have amplitude uniformly distributed over a large-area. These two waveguide states support unidirectional transport even though the medium of propagation is not magnetized. We show both experimentally and numerically that such one-way waveguide states can be utilized to abruptly narrow the beam width of an extended state to concentrate energy. Such extended waveguide modes are robust to different kinds of defects, such as voids and PEC barriers. They are also immune to the Anderson type localization when large randomness is introduced.

User Activity Detection and Channel Estimation for Grant-Free Random Access in LEO Satellite-Enabled Internet-of-Things

With recent advances on the dense low-earth orbit (LEO) constellation, LEO satellite network has become one promising solution to providing global coverage for Internet-of-Things (IoT) services. Confronted with the sporadic transmission from randomly activated IoT devices, we consider the random access (RA) mechanism, and propose a grant-free RA (GF-RA) scheme to reduce the access delay to the mobile LEO satellites. A Bernoulli-Rician message passing with expectation maximization (BR-MP-EM) algorithm is proposed for this terrestrial-satellite GF-RA system to address the user activity detection (UAD) and channel estimation (CE) problem. This BR-MP-EM algorithm is divided into two stages. In the inner iterations, the Bernoulli messages and Rician messages are updated for the joint UAD and CE problem. Based on the output of the inner iterations, the expectation maximization (EM) method is employed in the outer iterations to update the hyper-parameters related to the channel impairments. Finally, simulation results show the UAD and CE accuracy of the proposed BR-MP-EM algorithm, as well as the robustness against the channel impairments.

Vortical Reflection and Spiraling Fermi Arcs with Weyl Metamaterials

Scatterings and transport in Weyl semimetals have caught growing attention in condensed matter physics, with observables including chiral zero modes and the associated magnetoresistance and chiral magnetic effects. Measurement of electrical conductance is usually performed in these studies, which, however, cannot resolve the momentum of electrons, preventing direct observation of the phase singularities in scattering matrix associated with Weyl point. Here we experimentally demonstrate a helical phase distribution in the angle (momentum) resolved scattering matrix of electromagnetic waves in a photonic Weyl metamaterial. It further leads to spiraling Fermi arcs in an air gap sandwiched between a Weyl metamaterial and a metal plate. Benefiting from the alignment-free feature of angular vortical reflection, our findings establish a new platform in manipulating optical angular momenta with photonic Weyl systems.

A BP-MF-EP Based Iterative Receiver for Joint Phase Noise Estimation, Equalization and Decoding

In this work, with combined belief propagation (BP), mean field (MF) and expectation propagation (EP), an iterative receiver is designed for joint phase noise (PN) estimation, equalization and decoding in a coded communication system. The presence of the PN results in a nonlinear observation model. Conventionally, the nonlinear model is directly linearized by using the first-order Taylor approximation, e.g., in the state-of-the-art soft-input extended Kalman smoothing approach (soft-in EKS). In this work, MF is used to handle the factor due to the nonlinear model, and a second-order Taylor approximation is used to achieve Gaussian approximation to the MF messages, which is crucial to the low-complexity implementation of the receiver with BP and EP. It turns out that our approximation is more effective than the direct linearization in the soft-in EKS with similar complexity, leading to significant performance improvement as demonstrated by simulation results.

Controlling plasmonic orbital angular momentum by combining geometric and dynamic phases

Tunable orbit angular momentum (OAM) of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is theoretically studied with appropriately designed metasurfaces. By controlling both the orientation angle and spatial position of nano aperture array on an ultrathin gold film, the field distributions of the surface waves can be engineered to contain both spin dependent and independent OAM components. Simultaneous control over the geometric phase and optical path difference induced phase (dynamic phase) provides extra degrees of freedom for manipulating OAM of SPPs. We show that arbitrary combination of OAM numbers can be realized for the SPPs excited by incident light of different circular polarizations. The results provides powerful control over the OAM of SPPs, which will have potential applications on optical trapping, imaging, communications and quantum information processing.

Low Complexity Sparse Bayesian Learning Using Combined BP and MF with a Stretched Factor Graph

This paper concerns message passing based approaches to sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) with a linear model corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise with unknown variance. With the conventional factor graph, mean field (MF) message passing based algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In this work, instead of using the conventional factor graph, we modify the factor graph by adding some extra hard constraints (the graph looks like being `stretched'), which enables the use of combined belief propagation (BP) and MF message passing. We then propose a low complexity BP-MF SBL algorithm based on which an approximate BP-MF SBL algorithm is also developed to further reduce the complexity. Thanks to the use of BP, the BP-MF SBL algorithms show their merits compared with state-of-the-art MF SBL algorithms: they deliver even better performance with much lower complexity compared with the vector-form MF SBL algorithm and they significantly outperform the scalar-form MF SBL algorithm with similar complexity.

Message-Passing Receiver for Joint Channel Estimation and Decoding in 3D Massive MIMO-OFDM Systems

In this paper, we address the message-passing receiver design for the 3D massive MIMO-OFDM systems. With the aid of the central limit argument and Taylor-series approximation, a computationally efficient receiver that performs joint channel estimation and decoding is devised by the framework of expectation propagation. Specially, the local belief defined at the channel transition function is expanded up to the second order with Wirtinger calculus, to transform the messages sent by the channel transition function to a tractable form. As a result, the channel impulse response (CIR) between each pair of antennas is estimated by Gaussian message passing. In addition, a variational expectation-maximization (EM)-based method is derived to learn the channel power-delay-profile (PDP). The proposed joint algorithm is assessed in 3D massive MIMO systems with spatially correlated channels, and the empirical results corroborate its superiority in terms of performance and complexity.

Turbo-Equalization Using Partial Gaussian Approximation

This paper deals with turbo-equalization for coded data transmission over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. We propose a message-passing algorithm that uses the expectation-propagation rule to convert messages passed from the demodulator-decoder to the equalizer and computes messages returned by the equalizer by using a partial Gaussian approximation (PGA). Results from Monte Carlo simulations show that this approach leads to a significant performance improvement compared to state-of-the-art turbo-equalizers and allows for trading performance with complexity. We exploit the specific structure of the ISI channel model to significantly reduce the complexity of the PGA compared to that considered in the initial paper proposing the method.

Approximate Message Passing with Unitary Transformation

Approximate message passing (AMP) and its variants, developed based on loopy belief propagation, are attractive for estimating a vector x from a noisy version of z = Ax, which arises in many applications. For a large A with i. i. d. elements, AMP can be characterized by the state evolution and exhibits fast convergence. However, it has been shown that, AMP mayeasily diverge for a generic A. In this work, we develop a new variant of AMP based on a unitary transformation of the original model (hence the variant is called UT-AMP), where the unitary matrix is available for any matrix A, e.g., the conjugate transpose of the left singular matrix of A, or a normalized DFT (discrete Fourier transform) matrix for any circulant A. We prove that, in the case of Gaussian priors, UT-AMP always converges for any matrix A. It is observed that UT-AMP is much more robust than the original AMP for difficult A and exhibits fast convergence. A special form of UT-AMP with a circulant A was used in our previous work [13] for turbo equalization. This work extends it to a generic A, and provides a theoretical investigation on the convergence.

Phenomenological modeling of Geometric Metasurfaces

Metasurfaces, with their superior capability in manipulating the optical wavefront at the subwavelength scale and low manufacturing complexity, have shown great potential for planar photonics and novel optical devices. However, vector field simulation of metasurfaces is so far limited to periodic-structured metasurfaces containing a small number of meta-atoms in the unit cell by using full-wave numerical methods. Here, we propose a general phenomenological method to analytically model metasurfaces made up of arbitrarily distributed meta-atoms based on the assumption that the meta-atoms possess localized resonances with Lorentz-Drude forms, whose exact form can be retrieved from the full wave simulation of a single element. Applied to phase modulated geometric metasurfaces, our analytical results show good agreement with full-wave numerical simulations. The proposed theory provides an efficient method to model and design optical devices based on metasurfaces.

One-way helical electromagnetic wave propagation supported by magnetized plasma

In this paper we reveal the presence of photonic one-way helical surface states in a simple natural system - magnetized plasma. The application of an external magnetic field to a bulk plasma body not only breaks time-reversal-symmetry but also leads to separation of Equi-Frequency Contour surfaces (EFCs) to form topologically nontrivial gaps in k space. Interestingly, these EFCs support topologically protected surface states. We numerically investigate an interface between magnetized plasma, using a realistic model for parameter dispersion, and vacuum, to confirm the existence of one-way scatter-immune helical surface states. Unlike previous proposals for achieving photonic one-way propagation, our scheme does not require the use of artificial structures and should therefore be simple to implement experimentally.
