Chiral Majorana Edge Modes and Vortex Majorana Zero Modes in Superconducting Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator

The antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFTI) is topologically protected by the combined time-reversal and translational symmetry $\mathcal{T}_c$. In this paper we investigate the effects of the $s$-wave superconducting pairings on the multilayers of AFTI, which breaks $\mathcal{T}_c$ symmetry and can realize quantum anomalous Hall insulator with unit Chern number. For the weakly coupled pairings, the system corresponds to the topological superconductor (TSC) with the Chern number $C=\pm 2$. We answer the following questions whether the local Chern numbers and chiral Majorana edge modes of such a TSC distribute around the surface layers. By the numerical calculations based on a theoretic model of AFTI, we find that when the local Chern numbers are always dominated by the surface layers, the wavefunctions of chiral Majorana edge modes must not localize on the surface layers and show a smooth crossover from spatially occupying all layers to only distributing near the surface layers, similar to the hinge states in a three dimensional second-order topological phases. The latter phase can be distinguished from the former phase by the measurements of the local density of state. In addition we also study the superconducting vortex phase transition in this system and find that the exchange field in the AFTI not only enlarges the phase space of topological vortex phase but also enhances its topological stability. These conclusions will stimulate the investigations on superconducting effects of AFTI and drive the studies on chiral Majorana edge modes and vortex Majorana zero modes into a new era.

Emergence of massless Dirac quasiparticles in correlated hydrogenated graphene with broken sublattice symmetry

Using the variational cluster approximation (VCA) and the cluster perturbation theory, we study the finite temperature phase diagram of a half-depleted periodic Anderson model on the honeycomb lattice at half filling for a model of graphone, i.e., single-side hydrogenated graphene. The ground state of this model is found to be ferromagnetic (FM) semi-metal. The spin wave dispersion in the FM state is linear in momentum at zero temperature but becomes quadratic at finite temperatures, implying that the FM state is fragile against thermal fluctuations. Indeed, our VCA calculations find that the paramagnetic (PM) state dominates the finite temperature phase diagram. More surprisingly, we find that massless Dirac quasiparticles with the linear energy dispersion emerge at the Fermi energy upon introducing the electron correlation $U$ at the impurity sites in the PM phase. The Dirac Fermi velocity is found to be highly correlated to the quasiparticle weight of the emergent massless Dirac quasiparticles at the Fermi energy and monotonically increases with $U$. These unexpected massless Dirac quasiparticles are also examined with the Hubbard-I approximation and the origin is discussed in terms of the spectral weight redistribution involving a large energy scale of $U$. Considering an effective quasiparticle Hamiltonian which reproduces the single-particle excitations obtained by the Hubbard-I approximation, we argue that the massless Dirac quasiparticles are protected by the electron correlation. Our finding is therefore the first example of the emergence of massless Dirac quasiparticles due to dynamical electron correlations without breaking any spatial symmetry. The experimental implications of our results for graphone as well as a graphene sheet on transition metal substrates are also briefly discussed.

Giant switchable Rashba effect in oxide heterostructures

One of the most fundamental phenomena and a reminder of the electron's relativistic nature is the Rashba spin splitting for broken inversion symmetry. Usually this splitting is a tiny relativistic correction, hardly discernible in experiment. Interfacing a ferroelectric, BaTiO$_3$, and a heavy 5$d$ metal with a large spin-orbit coupling, Ba(Os,Ir)O$_3$, we show that giant Rashba spin splittings are indeed possible and even fully controllable by an external electric field. Based on density functional theory and a microscopic tight binding understanding, we conclude that the electric field is amplified and stored as a ferroelectric Ti-O distortion which, through the network of oxygen octahedra, also induces a large Os-O distortion. The BaTiO$_3$/BaOsO$_3$ heterostructure is hence the ideal test station for studying the fundamentals of the Rashba effect. It allows intriguing application such as the Datta-Das transistor to operate at room temperature.

Density functional study of X monodoped and codoped (X=C, N, S, F) anatase TiO2

Using density-functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient corrected approximation, the models that nonmetallic impurities X substituted for O or Ti sites in anatase TiO2 were investigated. The conclusion of the valence states of nonmetallic impurities X substituted for O or Ti sites in TiO2 is also supported by the results of optimized cell parameters and the local structures. Furthermore, an effective nonmetallic passivated codoping approach to modify the band edges of TiO2 is proposed.

Quantum confinement in perovskite oxide heterostructures: tight binding instead of nearly free electron picture

Most recently, orbital-selective quantum well states of $d$ electrons have been experimentally observed in SrVO$_3$ ultrathin films [K. Yoshimatsu et. al., Science 333, 319 (2011)] and SrTiO$_3$ surfaces [A. F. Santander-Syro et. al., Nature 469, 189 (2011)]. Hitherto, one tries to explain these experiments by a nearly free electron (NFE) model, an approach widely used for delocalized electrons in semiconductor heterostructures and simple metal films. We show that a tight binding (TB) model is more suitable for describing heterostructures with more localized $d$ electrons. In this paper, we construct from first principles simple TB models for perovskite oxide heterostructures and surfaces. We show that the TB model provides a simple intuitive physical picture and yields, already with only two parameters, quantitatively much more reliable results, consistent with experiment.

Large spectral weight transfer in optical conductivity of SrTiO$_{3}$ induced by intrinsic vacancies

The optical conductivity ($σ_{1}$) of SrTiO$_{3}$ for various vacancies has been systematically studied using a combination of ultraviolet - vacuum ultraviolet (UV-VUV) reflectivity and spectroscopic ellipsometry. For cation (Ti) vacancies, $σ_{1}$ shows large spectral weight transfer over a wide range of energy from as high as 35 eV to as low as 0.5 eV and the presence of mid-gap states, suggesting that strong correlations play an important role. While for anion (O) vacancies $σ_{1}$ shows changes from 7.4 eV up to 35 eV. These unexpected results can be explained in terms of orbital reconstruction.

Magnetic and Orbital Order in ($R$MnO$_3$)$_n$/($A$MnO$_3$)$_{2n}$ Superlattices Studied via a Double-Exchange Model with Strain

The two-orbital double-exchange model is employed for the study of the magnetic and orbital orders in ($R$MnO$_3$)$_n$/($A$MnO$_3$)$_{2n}$ ($R$: rare earths; $A$: alkaline earths) superlattices. The A-type antiferromagnetic order is observed in a broad region of parameter space for the case of SrTiO$_3$ as substrate, in agreement with recent experiments and first-principles calculations using these superlattices. In addition, also a C-type antiferromagnetic state is predicted to be stabilized when using substrates like LaAlO$_3$ with smaller lattice constants than SrTiO$_3$, again in agreement with first principles results. The physical mechanism for the stabilization of the A- and C- magnetic transitions is driven by the orbital splitting of the $x^2-y^2$ and $3z^2-r^2$ orbitals. This splitting is induced by the $Q_3$ mode of Jahn-Teller distortions created by the strain induced by the substrates. In addition to the special example of (LaMnO$_3$)$_n$/(SrMnO$_3$)$_{2n}$, our phase diagrams can be valuable for the case where the superlattices are prepared employing narrow bandwidth manganites. In particular, several non-homogenous magnetic profiles are predicted to occur in narrow bandwidth superlattices, highlighting the importance of carrying out investigations in this mostly unexplored area of research.

Strain-engineered magnetic order in (LaMnO$_{3}$)$_n$/(SrMnO$_{3}$)$_{2n}$ superlattices

Using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory, we show a strong strain dependence of magnetic order in (LaMnO$_{3}$)$_n$/(SrMnO$_{3}$)$_{2n}$ (001) superlattices with $n=1,2$. The epitaxial strain lifts the degeneracy of Mn $e_{g}$ orbitals, thus inducing an inherent orbital order, which in turn strongly affects the ferromagnetic double exchange of itinerant $e_{g}$ electrons, competing with the antiferromagnetic superexchange of localized $t_{2g}$ electrons. For the case of tensile strain induced by SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrate, we find that the ground state is A-type antiferromagnetic and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital ordered, which is in excellent agreement with recent experiments [S. J. May {\it et al.}, Nature Materials {\bf 8}, 892 (2009)]. Instead, for the case of compressive strain induced by LaAlO$_3$ (001) substrate, we predict that the ground state is C-type antiferromagnetic and $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital ordered.

Ab Initio Study of the Intrinsic Exchange Bias at the SrRuO$_3$/SrMnO$_3$ Interface

In a recent publication (S. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.103, 127201 (2009)), two (related) mechanisms were proposed to understand the intrinsic exchange bias present in oxides heterostructures involving G-type antiferromagnetic perovskites. The first mechanism is driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is a spin-orbit coupling effect. The second is induced by the ferroelectric polarization, and it is only active in heterostructures involving multiferroics. Using the SrRuO$_3$/SrMnO$_3$ superlattice as a model system, density-functional calculations are here performed to verify the two proposals. This proof-of-principle calculation provides convincing evidence that qualitatively supports both proposals.

First-principles study of the spin-mixing conductance in Pt/Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ junctions

Based on the spin-pumping theory and first-principles calculations, the spin-mixing conductance (SMC) is theoretically studied for Pt/Permalloy (Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$, Py) junctions. We evaluate the SMC for ideally clean Pt/Py junctions and examine the effects of interface randomness. We find that the SMC is generally enhanced in the presence of interface roughness as compared to the ideally clean junctions. Our estimated SMC is in good quantitative agreement with the recent experiment for Pt/Py junctions. We propose possible routes to increase the SMC in Pt/Py junctions by depositing a foreign magnetic metal layer in Pt, offering guidelines for designing the future spintronic devices.

Multiferroic Properties of CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$

We report that CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ is a new magnetic multiferroic material. The appearance of a ferroelectric polarization coinciding with the magnetic phase transition ($\sim90$ K) suggests the presence of ferroelectricity induced by magnetism, further confirmed by its strong magnetoelectric response. With respect to other known magnetic multiferroics, CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ displays attractive multiferroic properties, such as a high ferroelectric critical temperature and large polarization. More importantly, these results open a new avenue to search for magnetic multiferroics in the catalogue of doped oxides.
