Learning Classifiers on Positive and Unlabeled Data with Policy Gradient

Existing algorithms aiming to learn a binary classifier from positive (P) and unlabeled (U) data generally require estimating the class prior or label noises ahead of building a classification model. However, the estimation and classifier learning are normally conducted in a pipeline instead of being jointly optimized. In this paper, we propose to alternatively train the two steps using reinforcement learning. Our proposal adopts a policy network to adaptively make assumptions on the labels of unlabeled data, while a classifier is built upon the output of the policy network and provides rewards to learn a better strategy. The dynamic and interactive training between the policy maker and the classifier can exploit the unlabeled data in a more effective manner and yield a significant improvement on the classification performance. Furthermore, we present two different approaches to represent the actions sampled from the policy. The first approach considers continuous actions as soft labels, while the other uses discrete actions as hard assignment of labels for unlabeled examples. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two benchmark datasets as well as one e-commerce dataset. The result shows the proposed method is able to consistently outperform state-of-the-art methods in various settings.

From Disordered Quantum Walk to Physics of Off-diagonal Disorder

Systems with purely off-diagonal disorder have peculiar features such as the localization-delocalization transition and long-range correlations in their wavefunctions. To motivate possible experimental studies of the physics of off-diagonal disorder, we study in detail disordered discrete-time quantum walk in a finite chain, where the diagonal disorder can be set to zero by construction. Starting from a transfer matrix approach, we show, both theoretically and computationally, that the dynamics of the quantum walk with disorder manifests all the main features of off-diagonal disorder. We also propose how to prepare a remarkable delocalized zero-mode from a localized and easy-to-prepare initial state using an adiabatic protocol that increases the disorder strength slowly. Numerical experiments are also performed with encouraging results.

Quantum and Classical Superballistic Transport in a Relativistic Kicked-Rotor System

As an unusual type of anomalous diffusion behavior, superballistic transport is not well known but has been experimentally simulated recently. Quantum superballistic transport models to date are mainly based on connected sublattices which are constructed to have different properties. In this work, we show that both quantum and classical superballistic transport in the momentum space can occur in a simple periodically driven Hamiltonian system, namely, a relativistic kicked-rotor system with a nonzero mass term. The nonzero mass term essentially realizes a junction-like scenario: regimes with low or high momentum values have different dispersion relations and hence different transport properties. It is further shown that the quantum and classical superballistic transport should occur under much different choices of the system parameters. The results are of interest to studies of anomalous transport, quantum and classical chaos, and the issue of quantum-classical correspondence.

Localization behavior of Dirac particles in disordered graphene superlattices

Graphene superlattices (GSLs), formed by subjecting a monolayer graphene sheet to a periodic potential, can be used to engineer band structures and, from there, charge transport properties, but these are sensitive to the presence of disorder. The localization behavior of massless 2D Dirac particles induced by weak disorder is studied for both scalar-potential and vector-potential GSLs, computationally as well as analytically by a weak-disorder expansion. In particular, it is investigated how the Lyapunov exponent (inverse localization length) depends on the incidence angle to a 1D GSL. Delocalization resonances are found for both scalar and vector GSLs. The sharp angular dependence of the Lyapunov exponent may be exploited to realize disorder-induced filtering, as verified by full 2D numerical wave packet simulations.
