A Highly Magnetic Ultra Massive White Dwarf with a 23-minute Rotation Period

We present a physical characterization of TMTS J00063798+3104160 (J0006), a rapidly rotating,ultra-massive white dwarf (WD) identified in high-cadence light curves from the Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS). A coherent 23-minute periodicity is detected in TMTS, TESS, and ZTF photometry. A time series of low-resolution spectra with the Keck-I 10 m telescope reveals broad, shallow hydrogen absorption features indicative of an extreme magnetic field and shows no evidence for radial-velocity variations. Atmospheric modeling yields a magnetic field strength of $\sim$ 250 MG, while Gaia astrometry and photometry imply a mass of 1.06 $\pm$ 0.01 M$_{\odot}$. A significant infrared excess is detected in the WISE W1 band and is well fitted by a 550 K blackbody, likely arising from residual material of a merger. We interpret the 23-minute photometric modulation as the rotation period of an isolated, massive WD formed likely through the merger of a double WD binary. With one of the shortest rotation periods known among candidate merger remnants and with constraints from a deep Einstein Probe X-ray nondetection, J0006 provides a rare and important observational window into the poorly explored intermediate stages of post-merger evolution.

Hybridized Frequency Combs in Multimode Cavity Electromechanical System

The cavity electromechanical devices with radiation-pressure-interaction induced Kerr-like nonlinearity are promising candidates to generate microwave frequency combs. We construct a silicon-nitride-membrane-based superconducting cavity electromechanical device and study two mechanical modes mediated synergistic frequency combs. Around the threshold of intracavity field instability, we firstly show independent frequency combs with tooth spacing equalling to each mechanical mode frequency. At the overlap boundaries of these two individual mechanical mode mediated instability thresholds, we observe hybridization of frequency combs based on the cavity field mediated indirect coupling between these two mechanical modes. The spectrum lines turn to be unequally spaced but can be recognized into combinations of the coexisting frequency combs. Beyond the boundary, the comb reverts to the single-mode case, and which mechanical mode frequency will the tooth spacing depend on the mode competition. Our work demonstrates mechanical mode competition enabled switchability of frequency comb tooth spacing and can be extended to other devices with multiple nonlinearities.

The spins of the Galactic black holes in MAXI J1535-571 and 4U 1630-472 from Insight-HXMT

Insight-HXMT is the first Chinese X-ray astronomical mission. With a 1-250 keV bandpass, an energy resolution of 150 eV at 6 keV, and without being subject to pile-up distortions, it is suitable to study bright X-ray sources like Galactic black holes. In the present paper, we study Insight-HXMT observations of the X-ray binaries MAXI J1535-571 and 4U 1630-472 during their outbursts in 2017 and 2020, respectively. From the analysis of the reflection features, we are able to infer the black hole spin parameter in the two sources. For MAXI J1535-571, we find a spin parameter very close to 1, $a_* = 0.9916 \pm 0.0012$ (90% C.L., statistical error), which is consistent with the previous NuSTAR measurement. For 4U 1630-472, we find a moderately high value of the black hole spin parameter, $a_* =0.817 \pm 0.014$ (90% C.L., statistical error), which is lower than the almost extremal value found with NuSTAR data.

Optomechanical Anti-lasing with Infinite Group Delay at a Phase Singularity

Singularities that symbolize abrupt changes and exhibit extraordinary behavior are of broad interest. We experimentally study optomechanically induced singularities in a compound system consisting of a three-dimensional aluminum superconducting cavity and a metalized high-coherence silicon nitride membrane resonator. Mechanically-induced coherent perfect absorption and anti-lasing occur simultaneously under a critical optomechanical coupling strength. Meanwhile, the phase around the cavity resonance undergoes an abrupt $π$-phase transition, which further flips the phase slope in the frequency dependence. The observed infinite-discontinuity in the phase slope defines a singularity, at which the group velocity is dramatically changed. Around the singularity, an abrupt transition from an infinite group advance to delay is demonstrated by measuring a Gaussian-shaped waveform propagating. Our experiment may broaden the scope of realizing extremely long group delays by taking advantage of singularities.

Quantum coherence between cavity and artificial atom in a superconducting circuit QED ladder system

We have created a quantum three-level ladder system with the cavity dispersive energy level in a superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics system consisting of a transmon qubit and a cavity, and have directly observed the Autler-Townes splitting effect instead of representing it by the probability of the qubit being at each level. A coupler tone is applied on the transition between the second excited state of transmon and cavity dispersive level, while the cavity spectrum is probed. A doublet transmission and anormalous dispersion spectrum of the cavity level is clearly shown. The inverse Fourier transform of cavity spectrum indicates that there is a quantum coherence Rabi oscillation of the populations between cavity and qubit.
