Metalenses with polarization-independent adaptive nano-antennas

Metalens research has made major advances in recent years. These advances rely on the simple design principle of arranging meta-atoms in regular arrays to create an arbitrary phase and polarization profile. Unfortunately, the concept of equally spaced meta-atoms reaches its limit for high deflection angles where the deflection efficiency decreases. The efficiency can be increased using nano-antennas with multiple elements, but their polarization sensitivity hinders their application in metalenses. Here, we show that by designing polarization-insensitive dimer nano-antennas and abandoning the principle of equally spaced unit cells, polarization-independent ultrahigh numerical aperture (NA=1.48) oil-immersion operation with an efficiency of 43% can be demonstrated. This represents a significant improvement on other polarization-independent designs at visible wavelength. We also use this single layer metalens to replace a conventional objective lens and demonstrate the confocal scanning microscopic imaging of a grating with a period of 300 nm at 532 nm operating wavelength. Overall, our results experimentally demonstrate a novel design concept that further improves metalens performance.

Superpixel Segmentation with Fully Convolutional Networks

In computer vision, superpixels have been widely used as an effective way to reduce the number of image primitives for subsequent processing. But only a few attempts have been made to incorporate them into deep neural networks. One main reason is that the standard convolution operation is defined on regular grids and becomes inefficient when applied to superpixels. Inspired by an initialization strategy commonly adopted by traditional superpixel algorithms, we present a novel method that employs a simple fully convolutional network to predict superpixels on a regular image grid. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art superpixel segmentation performance while running at about 50fps. Based on the predicted superpixels, we further develop a downsampling/upsampling scheme for deep networks with the goal of generating high-resolution outputs for dense prediction tasks. Specifically, we modify a popular network architecture for stereo matching to simultaneously predict superpixels and disparities. We show that improved disparity estimation accuracy can be obtained on public datasets.

A Low-Complexity Algorithm for Throughput Maximization in Wireless Powered Communication Networks

This paper investigates a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) under the protocol of harvest-then-transmit,where a hybrid access point with constant power supply replenishes the passive user nodes by wireless power transfer in the downlink, then each user node transmit independent information to the hybrid AP in a time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme in the uplink. The sum-throughput maximization and min-throughput maximization problems are considered in this paper. The optimal time allocation for the sum-throughput maximization is proposed based on the Jensen's inequality, which provides more insight into the design of WPCNs.A low-complexity fixed-point iteration algorithm for the min-throughput maximization problem, which promises a much better computation complexity than the state-of-the-art algorithm.Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Joint Beamforming Design and Time Allocation for Wireless Powered Communication Networks

This paper investigates a multi-input single-output (MISO) wireless powered communication network (WPCN) under the protocol of harvest-then-transmit. The power station (PS) with reliable power supply can replenish the passive user nodes by wireless power transfer (WPT) in the downlink (DL), then each user node transmits independent information to the sink by a time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme in the uplink (UL). We consider the joint time allocation and beamforming design to maximize the system sum-throughput. The semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique is applied to solve the nonconvex design problem. The tightness of SDR approximation, thus the global optimality, is proved. This implies that only one single energy beamformer is required at the PS. Then a fast semiclosed form solution is proposed by exploiting the inherent structure. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms from the perspectives of time complexity and information throughput.

Stochastic Coordinate Coding and Its Application for Drosophila Gene Expression Pattern Annotation

\textit{Drosophila melanogaster} has been established as a model organism for investigating the fundamental principles of developmental gene interactions. The gene expression patterns of \textit{Drosophila melanogaster} can be documented as digital images, which are annotated with anatomical ontology terms to facilitate pattern discovery and comparison. The automated annotation of gene expression pattern images has received increasing attention due to the recent expansion of the image database. The effectiveness of gene expression pattern annotation relies on the quality of feature representation. Previous studies have demonstrated that sparse coding is effective for extracting features from gene expression images. However, solving sparse coding remains a computationally challenging problem, especially when dealing with large-scale data sets and learning large size dictionaries. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to solve the sparse coding problem, called Stochastic Coordinate Coding (SCC). The proposed algorithm alternatively updates the sparse codes via just a few steps of coordinate descent and updates the dictionary via second order stochastic gradient descent. The computational cost is further reduced by focusing on the non-zero components of the sparse codes and the corresponding columns of the dictionary only in the updating procedure. Thus, the proposed algorithm significantly improves the efficiency and the scalability, making sparse coding applicable for large-scale data sets and large dictionary sizes. Our experiments on Drosophila gene expression data sets demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
