On the dimension of bundle-valued Bergman spaces on compact Riemann surfaces

Given a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a compact Riemann surface $M$, and an open set $D$ in $M$, we prove that the Bergman space of holomorphic sections of the restriction of $E$ to $D$ must either coincide with the space of global holomorphic sections of $E$, or be infinite dimensional. Moreover, we characterize the latter entirely in terms of potential-theoretic properties of $D$.

Volume Approximation of Strongly ${\mathbb C}$-Convex Domains by Random Polyhedra

Polyhedral-type approximations of convex-like domains in $\mathbb{C}^d$ have been considered recently by the second author. In particular, the decay rate of the error in optimal volume approximation as a function of the number of facets has been obtained. In this article, we take these studies further by investigating polyhedra constructed using random points (Poisson or binomial process) on the boundary of a strongly $\mathbb{C}$-convex domain. We determine the rate of error in volume approximation of the domain by random polyhedra, and conjecture the precise value of the minimal limiting constant. Analogous to the real case, the exponent appearing in the error rate of random volume approximation coincides with that of optimal volume approximation, and can be interpreted in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of a naturally-occurring metric space. Moreover, the limiting constant is conjectured to depend on the Möbius-Fefferman measure, which is a complex analogue of the Blaschke surface area measure. Finally, we also prove $L^1$-convergence, variance bounds, and normal approximation.

Stability of the hull(s) of an $n$-sphere in $\mathbb{C}^n$

We study the (global) Bishop problem for small perturbations of $\mathbf{S}^n$ --- the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ --- in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We show that if $S\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ is a sufficiently-small perturbation of $\mathbf{S}^n$ (in the $\mathcal{C}^3$-norm), then $S$ bounds an $(n+1)$-dimensional ball $M\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ that is foliated by analytic disks attached to $S$. Furthermore, if $S$ is either smooth or real analytic, then so is $M$ (upto its boundary). Finally, if $S$ is real analytic (and satisfies a mild condition), then $M$ is both the envelope of holomorphy and the polynomially convex hull of $S$. This generalizes the previously known case of $n=2$ (CR singularities are isolated) to higher dimensions (CR singularities are nonisolated).

Rational and Polynomial Density on Compact Real Manifolds

We establish a characterization for an $m$-manifold $M$ to admit $n$ functions $f_1$,...,$f_n$ and $n'$ functions $g_1,...,g_{n'}$ in $\mathcal{C}^\infty(M)$ so that every element of $\mathcal{C}^k(M)$ can be approximated by rational combinations of $f_1,...,f_n$ and polynomial combinations of $g_1,...,g_{n'}$. As an application, we show that the optimal value of $n$ and $n'$ for all manifolds of dimension $m$ is [3m/2], when $k\geq 1$ and $m\geq 2$.

Volume Approximations of Strictly Pseudoconvex Domains

In convex geometry, the Blaschke surface area measure on the boundary of a convex domain can be interpreted in terms of the complexity of approximating polyhedra. In response to a question raised by D. Barrett, this approach is formulated in the holomorphic setting to establish an alternate interpretation of Fefferman's hypersurface measure on boundaries of strictly pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, it is shown that Fefferman's measure can be recovered from the Bergman kernel of the domain. A connection with the geometry of the Heisenberg group, emerging from these results, is also discussed.
