Electronic band structure in pristine and Sulfur-doped Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$

We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic band structure of the excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, as well as its evolution upon Sulfur doping. Our experimental data show that while the excitonic insulating phase is still preserved at a Sulfur-doping level of 25$\%$, such phase is heavily suppressed when there is a substantial amount, $\sim$ 50$\%$, of S-doping at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Moreover, our photon energy-dependent measurements reveal a clear three dimensionality of the electronic structure, both in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ and Ta$_2$Ni(Se$_{1-x}$S$_x$)$_5$ ($x=0.25, 0.50$) compounds. This suggests a reduction of electrical and thermal conductivities, which might make these compounds less suitable for electronic transport applications.

Observation of magnetic helicoidal dichroism with extreme ultraviolet light vortices

We report on the experimental evidence of magnetic helicoidal dichroism, observed in the interaction of an extreme ultraviolet vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum with a magnetic vortex. Numerical simulations based on classical electromagnetic theory show that this dichroism is based on the interference of light modes with different orbital angular momenta, which are populated after the interaction between the light phase chirality and the magnetic topology. This observation gives insight into the interplay between orbital angular momentum and magnetism, and sets the framework for the development of new analytical tools to investigate ultrafast magnetization dynamics.

Spectro-temporal shaping of seeded free-electron laser pulses

We demonstrate the ability to control and shape the spectro-temporal content of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses produced by a seeded free-electron laser (FEL). The control over the spectro-temporal properties of XUV light was achieved by precisely manipulating the linear frequency chirp of the seed laser. Our results agree with existing theory, which allows retrieving the temporal properties (amplitude and phase) of the FEL pulse from measurements of the spectra as a function of the FEL operating parameters. Furthermore, we show the first direct evidence of the full temporal coherence of FEL light and generate Fourier limited pulses by fine-tuning the FEL temporal phase. The possibility to tailor the spectro-temporal content of intense short-wavelength pulses represents the first step towards efficient nonlinear optics in the XUV to X-ray spectral region and will enable precise manipulation of core-electron excitations using the methods of coherent quantum control.

Generation of Coherent Extreme-Ultraviolet Radiation Carrying Orbital Angular Momentum

We propose an effective scheme for the generation of intense coherent extreme ultraviolet light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). The light is produced by a high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron laser (FEL), seeded using a laser pulse with a transverse staircase-like phase pattern. During amplification, diffraction and mode selection drive the radiation profile towards a dominant OAM mode at saturation. With a seed laser at 260 nm, gigawatt power levels are obtained at wavelengths approaching those of soft x-rays. Compared to other proposed schemes to generate OAM with FELs, our approach is robust, easier to implement, and can be integrated into already existing FEL facilities without extensive modifications of the machine layout.

Interaction of a point charge with the surface of a uniaxial dielectric

We analyze the force on a point charge moving at relativistic speeds parallel to the surface of a uniaxial dielectric. Two cases are examined: a lossless dielectric with no dispersion and a dielectric with a plasma type response. The treatment focuses on the peculiarities of the strength and direction of the interaction force as compared to the isotropic case. We show that a plasma type dielectric can, under specific conditions, repel the point charge.
