Anomalies and Supersymmetry

We revisit quantum field theory anomalies, emphasizing the interplay with diffeomorphisms and supersymmetry. The Ward identities of the latter induce Noether currents of all continuous symmetries, and we point out how these consistent currents are replaced by their covariant form through the appearance of the Bardeen-Zumino currents, which play a central role in our study. For supersymmetry Ward identities, two systematic methods for solving the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions are discussed: anomaly inflow and anomaly descent. The simplest inflows are from supersymmetric Chern-Simons actions in one dimension higher, which are used to supersymmetrize flavor anomalies in $d=4$ and, for $d=2$ $\mathcal{N}=(p,q)$, flavor anomalies with $p,q\leq 3$ and Lorentz-Weyl anomalies with $p,q\leq 6$. Finally, we extend the BRST algebra and the subsequent descent, a necessity for the diffeomorphism anomaly in retrospect. The same modification computes the supersymmetrized anomalies, and determines the above Chern-Simons actions when these exist.

Holonomy Saddles and 5d BPS Quivers

We study the Seberg-Witten geometry of 5d ${\cal N}=1$ pure Yang-Mills theories compactified on a circle. The concept of the holonomy saddle implies that there are multiple 4d limits of interacting Seiberg-Witten theories from a single 5d theory, and we explore this in the simplest case of pure $SU(N)$ theories. The compactification leads to $N$ copies of locally indistinguishable 4d pure $SU(N)$ Seiberg-Witten theories in the infrared, glued together in a manner dictated by the Chern-Simons level. We show how this picture naturally builds the 5d BPS quivers which agree with the D0 probe dynamics previously proposed via the geometrically engineered local Calabi-Yau. We work out various $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ examples through a detailed look at the respective spectral curves. We also note a special $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$ feature of $SU(N)_N$ spectral curves and the resulting BPS quivers, with emphasis on how the 4d holonomy saddles are affected.

Aspects of 5d Seiberg-Witten Theories on $\mathbb{S}^1$

We study the infrared physics of 5d $\cal N=1$ Yang-Mills theories compactified on $\mathbb{S}^1$, with a view toward 4d and 5d limits. Global structures of the simplest Coulombic moduli spaces are outlined, with an emphasis on how multiple planar 4d Seiberg-Witten geometries are embedded in the cigar geometry of a single 5d theory on $\mathbb{S}^1$. The Coulomb phase boundaries in the decompactification limit are given particular attention and related to how the wall-crossings by 5d BPS particles turn off. On the other hand, the elliptic genera of magnetic BPS strings do wall-cross and retain the memory of 4d wall-crossings, which we review with the example of dP$_2$ theory. Along the way, we also offer a general field theory proof of the odd shift of electric charge on Sp$(k)_π$ instanton solitons, previously observed via geometric engineering for low-rank supersymmetric theories.

Generalized Euler Index, Holonomy Saddles, and Wall-Crossing

We formulate Witten index problems for theories with two supercharges in a Majorana doublet, as in $d=3$ $\mathcal N=1$ theories and dimensional reduction thereof. Regardless of spacetime dimensions, the wall-crossing occurs generically, in the parameter space of the real superpotential $W$. With scalar multiplets only, the path integral reduces to a Gaussian one in terms of $dW$, with a winding number interpretation, and allows an in-depth study of the wall-crossing. After discussing the connection to well-known mathematical approaches such as the Morse theory, we move on to Abelian gauge theories. Even though the index theorem for the latter is a little more involved, we again reduce it to winding number countings of the neutral part of $dW$. The holonomy saddle plays key roles for both dimensions and also in relating indices across dimensions.

Topology of Generalized Spinors and Chiral Anomaly

Weyl fermions with nonlinear dispersion have appeared in real world systems, such as in the Weyl semi-metals and topological insulators. We consider the most general form of Dirac operators, and study its topological properties embedded in the chiral anomaly, in the index theorem, and in the odd-dimensional partition function, by employing the heat kernel. We find that all of these topological quantities are enhanced by a winding number defined by the Dirac operator in the momentum space, regardless of the spacetime dimensions. The chiral anomaly in $d=3+1$, in particular, is also confirmed via the conventional Feynman diagram. These interconnected results allow us to clarify the relationship between the chiral anomaly and the Chern number of the Berry connection, under dispute in some recent literatures, and also lead to a compact proof of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem.

Witten Index for Noncompact Dynamics

Among gauged dynamics motivated by string theory, we find many with gapless asymptotic directions. Although the natural boundary condition for ground states is $L^2$, one often turns on chemical potentials or supersymmetric mass terms to regulate the infrared issues, instead, and computes the twisted partition function. We point out how this procedure generically fails to capture physical $L^2$ Witten index with often misleading results. We also explore how, nevertheless, the Witten index is sometimes intricately embedded in such twisted partition functions. For $d=1$ theories with gapless continuum sector from gauge multiplets, such as non-primitive quivers and pure Yang-Mills, a further subtlety exists, leading to fractional expressions. Quite unexpectedly, however, the integral $L^2$ Witten index can be extracted directly and easily from the twisted partition function of such theories. This phenomenon is tied to the notion of the rational invariant that appears naturally in the wall-crossing formulae, and offers a general mechanism of reading off Witten index directly from the twisted partition function. Along the way, we correct early numerical results for some of $\mathcal N=4,8,16$ pure Yang-Mills quantum mechanics, and count threshold bound states for general gauge groups beyond $SU(N)$.

Mutation, Witten Index, and Quiver Invariant

We explore Seiberg-like dualities, or mutations, for ${\cal N}=4$ quiver quantum mechanics in the context of wall-crossing. In contrast to higher dimensions, the 1d Seiberg-duality must be performed with much care. With fixed Fayet-Iliopoulos constants, at most two nodes can be mutated, one left and the other right, mapping a chamber of a quiver into a chamber of a mutated quiver. We delineate this complex pattern for triangle quivers and show how the Witten indices are preserved under such finely chosen mutations. On the other hand, the quiver invariants, or wall-crossing-safe part of supersymmetric spectra, mutate more straightforwardly, whereby a quiver is mapped to a quiver. The mutation rule that preserves the quiver invariant is different from the usual one, however, which we explore and confirm numerically.

Exact Partition Functions on RP2 and Orientifolds

We consider gauged linear sigma models (GLSM) on $\mathbb{RP}^2$, obtained from a parity projection of $S^2$. The theories admit squashing deformation, much like GLSM on $S^2$, which allows us to interpret the partition function as the overlap amplitude between the vacuum state and crosscap states. From these, we extract the central charge of Orientifold planes, and observe that the Gamma class makes a prominent appearance as in the recent D-brane counterpart. We also repeat the computation for the mirror Landau-Ginzburg theory, which naturally brings out the $θ$-dependence as a relative sign between two holonomy sectors on $\mathbb{RP}^2$. We also show how our results are consistent with known topological properties of D-brane and Orientifold plane world-volumes, and discuss what part of the wrapped D-brane/Orientifold central charge should be attributed to the quantum volumes.

Witten Index and Wall Crossing

We compute the Witten index of one-dimensional gauged linear sigma models with at least ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. In the phase where the gauge group is broken to a finite group, the index is expressed as a certain residue integral. It is subject to a change as the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter is varied through the phase boundaries. The wall crossing formula is expressed as an integral at infinity of the Coulomb branch. The result is applied to many examples, including quiver quantum mechanics that is relevant for BPS states in $d=4$ ${\mathcal N}=2$ theories.

Abelianization of BPS Quivers and the Refined Higgs Index

We count Higgs "phase" BPS states of general non-Abelian quiver, possibly with loops, by mapping the problem to its Abelian, or toric, counterpart and imposing Weyl invariance later. Precise Higgs index computation is particularly important for quivers with superpotentials; the Coulomb "phase" index is recently shown to miss important BPS states, dubbed intrinsic Higgs states or quiver invariants. We demonstrate how the refined Higgs index is naturally decomposed to a sum over partitions of the charge. We conjecture, and show in simple cases, that this decomposition expresses the Higgs index as a sum over a set of partition-induced Abelian quivers of the same total charge but generically of smaller rank. Unlike the previous approach inspired by a similar decomposition of the Coulomb index, our formulae compute the quiver invariants directly, and thus offer a self-complete routine for counting BPS states.

BPS States, Refined Indices, and Quiver Invariants

For D=4 BPS state construction, counting, and wall-crossing thereof, quiver quantum mechanics offers two alternative approaches, the Coulomb phase and the Higgs phase, which sometimes produce inequivalent counting. The authors have proposed, in arXiv:1205.6511, two conjectures on the precise relationship between the two, with some supporting evidences. Higgs phase ground states are naturally divided into the Intrinsic Higgs sector, which is insensitive to wall-crossings and thus an invariant of quiver, plus a pulled-back ambient cohomology, conjectured to be an one-to-one image of Coulomb phase ground states. In this note, we show that these conjectures hold for all cyclic quivers with Abelian nodes, and further explore angular momentum and R-charge content of individual states. Along the way, we clarify how the protected spin character of BPS states should be computed in the Higgs phase, and further determine the entire Hodge structure of the Higgs phase cohomology. This shows that, while the Coulomb phase states are classified by angular momentum, the Intrinsic Higgs states are classified by R-symmetry.

Constructive Wall-Crossing and Seiberg-Witten

We outline a comprehensive and first-principle solution to the wall-crossing problem in D=4 N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories. We start with a brief review of the multi-centered nature of the typical BPS states and recall how the wall-crossing problem thus becomes really a bound state formation/dissociation problem. Low energy dynamics for arbitrary collections of dyons is derived, from Seiberg-Witten theory, with the proximity to the so-called marginal stability wall playing the role of the small expansion parameter. We find that, surprisingly, the $\mathbb{R}^{3n}$ low energy dynamics of n+1 BPS dyons cannot be consistently reduced to the classical moduli space, $\CM$, yet the index can be phrased in terms of $\CM$. We also explain how an equivariant version of this index computes the protected spin character of the underlying field theory, where $SO(3)_\CJ$ isometry of $\CM$ turns out to be the diagonal subgroup of $SU(2)_L$ spatial rotation and $SU(2)_R$ R-symmetry. The so-called rational invariants, previously seen in the Kontsevich-Soibelman formalism of wall-crossing, are shown to emerge naturally from the orbifolding projection due to Bose/Fermi statistics.

D-brane anomaly inflow revisited

Axial and gravitational anomaly of field theories, when embedded in string theory, must be accompanied by canceling inflow. We give a self-contained overview for various world-volume theories, and clarify the role of smeared magnetic sources in I-brane/D-brane cases. The proper anomaly descent of the source, as demanded by regularity of RR field strengths H's, turns out to be an essential ingredient. We show how this allows correct inflow to be generated for all such theories, including self-dual cases, and also that the mechanism is now insensitive to the choice between the two related but inequivalent forms of D-brane Chern-Simons couplings. In particular, SO(6)_R axial anomaly of d=4 maximal SYM is canceled by the inflow onto D3-branes via the standard minimal coupling to C_4. We also propose how, for the anomaly cancelation, the four types of Orientifold planes should be coupled to the spacetime curvatures, of which conflicting claims existed previously.

Ab Initio Wall-Crossing

We derive supersymmetric quantum mechanics of n BPS objects with 3n position degrees of freedom and 4n fermionic partners with SO(4) R-symmetry. The potential terms, essential and sufficient for the index problem for non-threshold BPS states, are universal, and 2(n-1) dimensional classical moduli spaces M_n emerge from zero locus of the potential energy. We emphasize that there is no natural reduction of the quantum mechanics to M_n, contrary to the conventional wisdom. Nevertheless, via an index-preserving deformation that breaks supersymmetry partially, we derive a Dirac index on M_n as the fundamental state counting quantity. This rigorously fills a missing link in the "Coulomb phase" wall-crossing formula in literature. We then impose Bose/Fermi statistics of identical centers, and derive the general wall-crossing formula, applicable to both BPS black holes and BPS dyons. Also explained dynamically is how the rational invariant ~Ω(β)/p^2, appearing repeatedly in wall-crossing formulae, can be understood as the universal multiplicative factor due to p identical, coincident, yet unbound, BPS particles of charge β. Along the way, we also clarify relationships between field theory state countings and quantum mechanical indices.

Four-nucleon contact interactions from holographic QCD

We calculate the low energy constants of four-nucleon interactions in an effective chiral Lagrangian in holographic QCD. We start with a D4-D8 model to obtain meson-nucleon interactions and then integrate out massive mesons to obtain the four-nucleon interactions in 4D. We end up with two low energy constants at the leading order and seven of them at the next leading order, which is consistent with the effective chiral Lagrangian. The values of the low energy constants are evaluated with the first five Kaluza-Klein resonances.

Framed BPS States, Moduli Dynamics, and Wall-Crossing

We formulate supersymmetric low energy dynamics for BPS dyons in strongly-coupled N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories, and derive wall-crossing formulae thereof. For BPS states made up of a heavy core state and n probe (halo) dyons around it, we derive a reliable supersymmetric moduli dynamics with 3n bosonic coordinates and 4n fermionic superpartners. Attractive interactions are captured via a set of supersymmetric potential terms, whose detail depends only on the charges and the special Kaehler data of the underlying N=2 theories. The small parameters that control the approximation are not electric couplings but the mass ratio between the core and the probe, as well as the distance to the marginal stability wall where the central charges of the probe and of the core align. Quantizing the dynamics, we construct BPS bound states and derive the primitive and the semi-primitive wall-crossing formulae from the first principle. We speculate on applications to line operators and Darboux coordinates, and also about extension to supergravity setting.

Precision Holographic Baryons

We overview a holographic QCD based on the D4-D8 string theory model, with emphasis on baryons and nucleon-meson interactions thereof. Baryons are realized as holographic images of Skyrmions, but with much qualitative changes. This allows us to derive, without adjustable parameters, couplings of baryons to the entire tower of spin one mesons and also to pseudoscalar mesons. We find some surprisingly good match against empirical values for nucleons, in particular. Tensor couplings to all axial-vectors and iso-singlet vectors all vanish, while, for $ρ$ mesons, tensor couplings are found to be dominant. We close with various cautionary comments and speculations.

A Matrix Model for Baryons and Nuclear Forces

We propose a new matrix model describing multi-baryon systems. We derive the action from open string theory on the wrapped baryon vertex D-branes embedded in the D4-D8 model of large N holographic QCD. The positions of k baryons are unified into k x k matrices, with spin/isospin of the baryons encoded in a set of k-vectors. Holographic baryons are known to be very small in the large 't Hooft coupling limit, and our model offers a better systematic approach to dynamics of such baryons at short distances. We compute energetics and spectra (k=1), and also short-distance nuclear force (k=2). In particular, we obtain a new size of the holographic baryon and find a precise form of the repulsive core of nucleons. This matrix model complements the instanton soliton picture of holographic baryons, whose small size turned out to be well below the natural length scale of the approximation involved there. Our results show that, nevertheless, the basic properties of holographic baryons obtained there are robust under stringy corrections within a few percents.

A Study of Wall-Crossing: Flavored Kinks in D=2 QED

We study spectrum of D=2 N=(2,2) QED with N+1 massive charged chiral multiplets, with care given to precise supermultiplet countings. In the infrared the theory flows to CP^N model with twisted masses, where we construct generic flavored kink solitons for the large mass regime, and study their quantum degeneracies. These kinks are qualitatively different and far more numerous than those of small mass regime, with features reminiscent of multi-pronged (p,q) string web, complete with the wall-crossing behavior. It has been also conjectured that spectrum of this theory is equivalent to the hypermultiplet spectrum of a certain D=4 Seiberg-Witten theory. We find that the correspondence actually extends beyond hypermultiplets in D=4, and that many of the relevant indices match. However, a D=2 BPS state is typically mapped to several different kind of dyons whose individual supermultiplets are rather complicated; the match of index comes about only after summing over indices of these different dyons. We note general wall-crossing behavior of flavored BPS kink states, and compare it to those of D=4 dyons.

Holographic Baryons

We review baryons in the D4-D8 holographic model of low energy QCD, with the large $N_c$ and the large 't Hooft coupling limit. The baryon is identified with a bulk soliton of a unit Pontryagin number, which from the four-dimensional viewpoint translates to a heavily modified Skyrmion dressed by condensates of spin one mesons. We explore classical properties and find that the baryon in the holographic limit is amenable to an effective field theory description. We also present a simple method to capture all leading and subleading interactions in the $1/N_c$ and the derivative expansions. An infinitely predictive model of baryon-meson interactions is thus derived, although one may trust results only for low energy processes, given various approximations in the bulk. We showcase a few comparisons to experiments, such the leading axial couplings to pions, the leading vector-like coupling, and a qualitative prediction of the electromagnetic vector dominance that involves the entire tower of vector mesons. Holographic Deuteron and Nucleon-Nucleon Potential

We compute the potential between a pair of nucleons in the D4-D8 holographic QCD. In the large 't Hooft coupling limit, $λ\gg 1$, the hadronic size of the baryon is small $\sim 1/\sqrtλM_{KK}$, and their interaction with mesons are well approximated by a set of dimension four and five operators. The nucleon-nucleon potential emerges from one-boson exchange picture involving massless pseudo-scalars and an infinite tower of spin one mesons. We find in particular that $ρ$ meson exchanges are dominated by a dimension five derivative coupling of tensor type, whereas for $ω$ mesons and axial mesons, such tensor couplings are completely absent. The potential is universally repulsive $\sim 1/r^2$ at short distance, and has the usual long-distance attractive behavior $\sim -1/r^3$ along a isosinglet and spin triplet channel. Both the large $N_c$ form and the finite $N_c$ form are given. In the former, a shallow classical minimum of depth $\sim 0.1M_{KK}{N_c/λ}$ forms at around $rM_{KK}\simeq 5.5$.

A Holographic QCD and Excited Baryons from String Theory

We study baryons of arbitrary isospin in a stringy holographic QCD model. In this D4-D8 holographic setting, the flavor symmetry is promoted to a gauge symmetry in the bulk, and produces, as KK modes of the gauge field, pions and spin one mesons of low energy QCD. Baryons of arbitrary isospins are represented as instanton solitons with isospin and spin quantum numbers locked, in a manner similar to the Skyrmion model. The soliton picture leads to a natural effective field theory of arbitrary baryons interacting with mesons. Couplings of baryons to axial mesons, including pions, are dominated in the large $N_c$ limit by a direct coupling to the flavor field strength in five dimensions. We delineate the relevant couplings and determine their strengths. This work generalizes part of hep-th/0701276 and arXiv:0705.2632 [hep-th] to all excited baryons. Due to technical difficulties in introducing relativistic higher spin fields, we perform all computations in the nonrelativistic regime, which suffices for the leading $N_c$ predictions.

A Nonperturbative Test of M2-Brane Theory

We discuss non-perturbative effects in the ABJM model due to monopole instantons. We begin by constructing the instanton solutions in the $U(2)\times U(2)$ model, explicitly, and computing the Euclidean action. The Wick-rotated Lagrangian is complex and its BPS monopole instantons are found to be a delicate version of the usual 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions. They are generically 1/3 BPS but become 1/2 BPS at special locus in the moduli space of two M2-branes, yet each instanton carries eight fermionic zero modes, regardless of the vacuum choice. The low energy effective action induced by monopole instantons are quartic order in derivatives. The resulting vertices are nonperturbative in $1/k$, as expected, but are rational functions of the vacuum moduli. We also analyze the system of two M2-branes in the supergravity framework and compute the higher order interactions via 11-dimensional supergraviton exchange. The comparison of the two shows that the instanton vertices are precisely reproduced by this M2-brane picture, supporting the proposal that the ABJM model describes multiple M2-branes.

Reheating the Universe after String Theory Inflation

In String theory realizations of inflation, the end point of inflation is often brane-anti brane annihilation. We consider the processes of reheating of the Standard Model universe after brane inflation. We identify the channels of inflaton energy decay, cascading from tachyon annihilation through massive closed string loops, KK modes, and brane displacement moduli to the lighter standard model particles. Cosmological data constrains scenarios by putting stringent limits on the fraction of reheating energy deposited in gravitons and nonstandard sector massive relics. We estimate the energy deposited into various light degrees of freedom in the open and closed string sectors, the timing of reheating, and the reheating temperature. Production of gravitons is significantly suppressed in warped inflation. However, we predict a residual gravitational radiation background at the level $Ω_{GW} \sim 10^{-8}$ of the present cosmological energy density. We also extend our analysis to multiple throat scenarios. A viable reheating would be possible in a single throat or in a certain subclass of multiple throat scenarios of the KKLMMT type inflation model, but overproduction of massive KK modes poses a serious problem. The problem is quite severe if some inner manifold comes with approximate isometries (angular KK modes) or if there exists a throat of modest length other than the standard model throat, possibly associated with some hidden sector (low-lying KK modes).

A Holographic View on Matrix Model of Black Hole

We investigate a deformed matrix model proposed by Kazakov et.al. in relation to Witten's two-dimensional black hole. The existing conjectures assert the equivalence of the two by mapping each to a deformed c=1 theory called the sine-Liouville theory. We point out that the matrix theory in question may be naturally interpreted as a gauged quantum mechanics deformed by insertion of an exponentiated Wilson loop operator, which gives us more direct and holographic map between the two sides. The matrix model in the usual scaling limit must correspond to the bosonic SL(2,R)/U(1) theory in genus expansion but exact in α'. We successfully test this by computing the Wilson loop expectation value and comparing it against the bulk computation. For the latter, we employ the α'-exact geometry proposed by Dijkgraaf, Verlinde, and Verlinde, which was further advocated by Tseytlin. We close with comments on open problems.

Open/Closed Duality, Unstable D-Branes, and Coarse-Grained Closed Strings

At the final stage of unstable D-brane decay in the effective field theory approach, all energy and momentum of the initial state are taken up by two types of fluids, known as string fluid and tachyon matter. In this note, we compare motion of this fluid system to that of macroscopic collection of stretched closed strings and find a precise match at classical level. The string fluid reflects low frequency undulation of the stretched strings while the tachyon matter encodes the average effect of high frequency oscillations turned on those strings. In particular, the combined fluid system has been known to have a reduced speed of light, depending on the composition, and we show that this property is exactly reproduced in classical motion on the closed string side. Finally we illustrate how the tachyon matter may be viewed as an effective degrees of freedom carrying high frequency energy-momentum of Nambu-Goto strings by coarse-graining the dynamics of the latter.

The N=1* Theories on R^{1+2} X S^1 with Twisted Boundary Conditions

We explore the N=1* theories compactified on a circle with twisted boundary conditions. The gauge algebra of these theories are the so-called twisted affine Lie algebra. We propose the exact superpotentials by guessing the sum of all monopole-instanton contributions and also by requiring SL(2,Z) modular properties. The latter is inherited from the N=4 theory, which will be justified in the M theory setting. Interestingly all twisted theories possess full SL(2,Z) invariance, even though none of them are simply-laced. We further notice that these superpotentials are associated with certain integrable models widely known as elliptic Calogero-Moser models. Finally, we argue that the glueball superpotential must be independent of the compactification radius, and thus of the twisting, and confirm this by expanding it in terms of glueball superfield in weak coupling expansion.

Tachyon Tube and Supertube

We search for tubular solutions in unstable D3-brane. With critical electric field E=1, solutions representing supertubes, which are supersymmetric bound states of fundamental strings, D0-branes, and a cylindrical D2-brane, are found and shown to exhibit BPS-like property. We also point out that boosting such a {\it tachyon tube} solution generates string flux winding around the tube, resulting in helical electric fluxes on the D2-brane. We also discuss issues related to fundamental string, absence of magnetic monopole, and finally more tachyon tubes with noncritical electric field.

Low Energy Dynamics for 1/4 BPS Dyons

Classical 1/4 BPS configurations consist of 1/2 BPS dyons which are positioned by competing static forces from electromagnetic and Higgs sectors. These forces do not follow the simple inverse square law, but can be encoded in some low energy effective potential between fundamental monopoles of distinct types. In this paper, we find this potential, by comparing the exact 1/4 BPS bound from a Yang-Mills field theory with its counterpart derived from low energy effective dynamics of monopoles. Our method is generalized to arbitrary gauge groups and to arbitrary BPS monopole/dyon configurations. The resulting effective action for 1/4 BPS states is written explicitly, and shown to be determined entirely by the geometry of multi-monopole moduli spaces. We also explore its natural supersymmetric extension.

Quantum Spectrum of Instanton Solitons in Five Dimensional Noncommutative U(N) Theories

We explore quantum states of instanton solitons in five dimensional noncommutative Yang-Mills theories. We start with maximally supersymmetric U(N) theory compactified on a circle S^1, and derive the low energy dynamics of instanton solitons, or calorons, which is no longer singular. Quantizing the low energy dynamics, we find N physically distinct ground states with a unit Pontryagin number and no electric charge. These states have a natural D-string interpretation. The conclusion remains unchanged as we decompactify S^1, as long as we stay in the Coulomb phase by turning on adjoint Higgs expectation values.

BPS Mass, Dirichlet Boundary Condition, and the Isotropic Coordinate System

We consider test strings and test branes ending on D$p$-branes ($p\le 6$) and NS5-branes in the background, for a heuristic understanding of the dynamics. Whenever some supersymmetry is preserved, a simple BPS bound appears, but the central charge in question is measured by certain isotropic coordinate system, rather than by the actual spacetime geometry. This way, the ground state energy is independent of the gravitational radii of the solitonic background. Furthermore, a perturbation around the supersymmetric ground states reveals that the appropriate Dirichlet boundary condition is dynamically induced. We close with comments.

Dyons in N=4 Supersymmetric Theories and Three-Pronged Strings

We construct and explore BPS states that preserve 1/4 of supersymmetry in N=4 Yang-Mills theories. Such states are also realized as three-pronged strings ending on D3-branes. We correct the electric part of the BPS equation and relate its solutions to the unbroken abelian gauge group generators. Generic 1/4-BPS solitons are not spherically symmetric, but consist of two or more dyonic components held apart by a delicate balance between static electromagnetic force and scalar Higgs force. The instability previously found in three-pronged string configurations is due to excessive repulsion by one of these static forces. We also present an alternate construction of these 1/4-BPS states from quantum excitations around a magnetic monopole, and build up the supermultiplet for arbitrary (quantized) electric charge. The degeneracy and the highest spin of the supermultiplet increase linearly with a relative electric charge. We conclude with comments.

Explicit Multimonopole Solutions in SU(N) Gauge Theory

We construct multimonopole solutions containing N-1 distinct fundamental monopoles in SU(N) gauge theory. When the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to U(1)^{N-1}, the monopoles are all massive, and we show that the fields can be written in terms of elementary function for all values of the monopole positions and phases. In the limit of unbroken U(1) X SU(N-2) X U(1) symmetry, the configuration can be viewed as containing a pair of massive monopoles, each carrying both U(1) and SU(N-2) magnetic charges, together with N-3 massless monopoles that condense into a cloud of non-Abelian fields. We obtain explicit expressions for the fields in the latter case and use these to analyze the properties of the non-Abelian cloud.

Four-dimensional BPS-spectra via M-theory

We consider the realization of four-dimensional theories with N = 2 supersymmetry as M-theory configurations including a five-brane. Our emphasis is on the spectrum of massive states, that are realized as two-branes ending on the five-brane. We start with a determination of the supersymmetries that are left unbroken by the background metric and five-brane. We then show how the central charge of the N = 2 algebra arises from the central charge associated with the M-theory two-brane. This determines the condition for a two-brane configuration to be BPS-saturated in the four-dimensional sense. By imposing certain conditions on the moduli, we can give concrete examples of such two-branes. This leads us to conjecture that vectormultiplet and hypermultiplet BPS-saturated states correspond to two-branes with the topology of a cylinder and a disc respectively. We also discuss the phenomenon of marginal stability of BPS-saturated states.

Monopoles and Instantons on Partially Compactified D-Branes

Motivated by the recent D-brane constructions of world-volume monopoles and instantons, we study the supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on $S^1 \times R^{3+1}$, spontaneously broken by a Wilson loop. In addition to the usual N-1 fundamental monopoles, the N-th BPS monopole appears from the Kaluza-Klein sector. When all N monopoles are present, net magnetic charge vanishes and the solution can be reinterpreted as a Wilson-loop instanton of unit Pontryagin number. The instanton/multi-monopole moduli space is explicitly constructed, and seen to be identical to a Coulomb phase moduli space of a U(1)^N gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions related to Kronheimer's gauge theory of SU(N) type. This extends the results by Intriligator and Seiberg to the finite couplings that, in the infrared limit of Kronheimer's theory, the Coulomb phase parameterizes a centered SU(N) instanton. We also elaborate on the case of restored SU(N) symmetry.

Witten Index and Threshold Bound States of D-Branes

We consider the Witten index ${\cal I}= Tr (-1)^F$ of SU(2) Super-Yang-Mills quantum mechanics (SYMQ) with N=16, 8, 4 supersymmetries. The theory governs the interactions between a pair of D-branes under various circumstances, and our goal is to count the number of the threshold bound states directly from the low-energy effective theory. The string theory and M theory have predicted that ${\cal I}=1$ for N=16, which in fact forms an underlying hypothesis of the M(atrix) theory formulation. Also the consistency of conifold transitions in type II theories is known to require ${\cal I}=0$ for N=8 and 4. Here, the bulk contribution to ${\cal I}$ is computed explicitly, and for N=16, 8, 4, found to be 5/4, 1/4, 1/4 respectively, suggesting a common defect contribution of -1/4. We illustrate how the defect term of -1/4 may arise in the SU(2) SYMQ by considering the effective dynamics along the asymptotic region.

Electromagnetic Duality and $SU(3)$ Monopoles

We consider the low-energy dynamics of a pair of distinct fundamental monopoles that arise in the $N=4$ supersymmetric $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory broken to $U(1)\times U(1)$. Both the long distance interactions and the short distance behavior indicate that the moduli space is $R^3\times(R^1 \times {\cal M}_0)/Z$ where ${\cal M}_0$ is the smooth Taub-NUT manifold, and we confirm this rigorously. By examining harmonic forms on the moduli space, we find a threshold bound state of two monopoles with a tower of BPS dyonic states built on it, as required by Montonen-Olive duality. We also present a conjecture for the metric of the moduli space for any number of distinct fundamental monopoles for an arbitrary gauge group.

SELF-DUAL ANYONS IN UNIFORM BACKGROUND FIELDS

We study relativistic self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs systems in the presence of uniform background fields that explicitly break CTP. A rich, but discrete vacuum structure is found when the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken, while the symmetric phase can have an infinite vacuum degeneracy at tree level. The latter is due to the proliferation of neutral solitonic states that cost zero energy. Various novel self-dual solitons, such as these, are found in both the symmetric and the asymmetric phases. Also by considering a similar system on a two-sphere and the subsequent large sphere limit, we isolate sensible and finite expressions for the conserved angular and linear momenta, which satisfy anomalous commutation relations. We conclude with a few remarks on unresolved issues.

The Bogomol'nyi Bound of Lee-Weinberg Magnetic Monopoles

The Lee-Weinberg $U(1)$ magnetic monopoles, which have been reinterpreted as topological solitons of a certain non-Abelian gauged Higgs model recently, are considered for some specific choice of Higgs couplings. The model under consideration is shown to admit a Bogomol'nyi-type bound which is saturated by the configurations satisfying the generalized BPS equations. We consider the spherically symmetric monopole solutions in some detail.

Fermionic $θ$ Vacua and Long-Necked Remnants

We study a vacuum polarization effect in the background of certain dilatonic extremal black hole, known as the cornucopion. Whenever the charged fermions are of any finite mass, the gravitational backreaction to a generic value of a $CP$ nonconserving vacuum angle $θ$ is shown to be important owing to a vacuum energy density which does not vanish deep inside the cornucopion. When this energy density is positive, this effect creates an extremal horizon at finite physical distance, closing off the infinite neck. We study the geometry near this horizon in some detail and find different physical interpretations for small and large fermion mass. Also, we argue that the conclusion is qualitatively correct despite the strong coupling.

Mass vs. Charge: Quantum Radiation from Zero Temperature Black Holes

We study the mass-charge relation for the semiclassical extremal black hole of the $S$-wave sector Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to $N$ conformal scalars. The classical ratio $M/{|Q|}=1$ is shown to be modified to $M/{|Q|} \simeq 1-k/6$ for small $ k \equiv N\hbar/(12πQ^{2})$. Furthermore, numerical study for $k<2$ shows that $M/|Q|$ is a monotonically decreasing function of $k$. We speculate on the consequence of such a modification in the 4-dimensional context.
