Gromov-Witten Theory of Complete Intersections via Nodal Invariants

We provide an inductive algorithm computing Gromov-Witten invariants in all genera with arbitrary insertions of all smooth complete intersections in projective space. We also prove that all Gromov-Witten classes of all smooth complete intersections in projective space belong to the tautological ring of the moduli space of stable curves. The main idea is to show that invariants with insertions of primitive cohomology classes are controlled by their monodromy and by invariants defined without primitive insertions but with imposed nodes in the domain curve. To compute these nodal Gromov-Witten invariants, we introduce the new notion of nodal relative Gromov-Witten invariants. We then prove a nodal degeneration formula and a relative splitting formula. These results for nodal relative Gromov-Witten theory are stated in complete generality and are of independent interest.

On the log-local principle for the toric boundary

Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety and let $D=D_1+\cdots+D_l$ be a reduced normal crossing divisor on $X$ with each component $D_j$ smooth, irreducible, and nef. The log-local principle of van Garrel-Graber-Ruddat conjectures that the genus 0 log Gromov-Witten theory of maximal tangency of $(X,D)$ is equivalent to the genus 0 local Gromov-Witten theory of $X$ twisted by $\bigoplus_{j=1}^l\mathcal{O}(-D_j)$. We prove that an extension of the log-local principle holds for $X$ a (not necessarily smooth) $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective toric variety, $D$ the toric boundary, and descendent point insertions.

Scattering diagrams, sheaves, and curves

We review the recent proof of the N.Takahashi's conjecture on genus $0$ Gromov-Witten invariants of $(\mathbb{P}^2, E)$, where $E$ is a smooth cubic curve in the complex projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$. The main idea is the use of the algebraic notion of scattering diagram as a bridge between the world of Gromov-Witten invariants of $(\mathbb{P}^2, E)$ and the world of moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$. Using this bridge, the N.Takahashi's conjecture can be translated into a manageable question about moduli spaces of coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$. This survey is based on a three hours lecture series given as part of the Beijing-Zurich moduli workshop in Beijing, 9-12 September 2019.
