Quantum immanants, double Young-Capelli bitableaux and Schur shifted symmetric functions

In this paper are introduced two classes of elements in the enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$: the \emph{double Young-Capelli bitableaux} $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ T$}\ ]$ and the \emph{central} \emph{Schur elements} $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$, that act in a remarkable way on the highest weight vectors of irreducible Schur modules. Any element $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ is the sum of all double Young-Capelli bitableaux $[\ \fbox{$S \ | \ S$}\ ]$, $S$ row (strictly) increasing Young tableaux of shape $\widetildeλ$. The Schur elements $\mathbf{S}_λ(n)$ are proved to be the preimages - with respect to the Harish-Chandra isomorphism - of the \emph{shifted Schur polynomials} $s_{λ|n}^* \in Λ^*(n)$. Hence, the Schur elements are the same as the Okounkov \textit{quantum immanants}, recently described by the present authors as linear combinations of \emph{Capelli immanants}. This new presentation of Schur elements/quantum immanants doesn't involve the irreducible characters of symmetric groups. The Capelli elements $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ are column Schur elements and the Nazarov-Umeda elements $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$ are row Schur elements. The duality in $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ follows from a combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{H}_k(n)$ on irreducible modules that is {\it{dual}} (in the sense of shapes/partitions) to the combinatorial description of the eigenvalues of the $\mathbf{I}_k(n)$. The passage $n \rightarrow \infty$ for the algebras $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ is obtained both as direct and inverse limit in the category of filtered algebras, via the \emph{Olshanski decomposition/projection}.

Five-dimensional gauge theories and the local B-model

We propose an effective framework for computing the prepotential of the topological B-model on a class of local Calabi--Yau geometries related to the circle compactification of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang--Mills theory with simple gauge group. In the simply-laced case, we construct Picard--Fuchs operators from the Dubrovin connection on the Frobenius manifolds associated to the extended affine Weyl groups of type $\mathrm{ADE}$. In general, we propose a purely algebraic construction of Picard--Fuchs ideals from a canonical subring of the space of regular functions on the ramification locus of the Seiberg--Witten curve, encompassing non-simply-laced cases as well. We offer several precision tests of our proposal. Whenever a candidate spectral curve is known from string theory/brane engineering, we perform non-perturbative comparisons with the gauge theory prepotentials obtained from the K-theoretic blow-up equations, finding perfect agreement. We also employ our formalism to rule out some proposals from the theory of integrable systems of Seiberg--Witten geometries for non-simply laced gauge groups.

On the log-local principle for the toric boundary

Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety and let $D=D_1+\cdots+D_l$ be a reduced normal crossing divisor on $X$ with each component $D_j$ smooth, irreducible, and nef. The log-local principle of van Garrel-Graber-Ruddat conjectures that the genus 0 log Gromov-Witten theory of maximal tangency of $(X,D)$ is equivalent to the genus 0 local Gromov-Witten theory of $X$ twisted by $\bigoplus_{j=1}^l\mathcal{O}(-D_j)$. We prove that an extension of the log-local principle holds for $X$ a (not necessarily smooth) $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective toric variety, $D$ the toric boundary, and descendent point insertions.

Exterior powers of the adjoint representation and the Weyl ring of $E_8$

I derive explicitly all polynomial relations in the character ring of $E_8$ of the form $χ_{\wedge^k \mathfrak{e}_8} - \mathfrak{p}_{k} (χ_{1}, \dots, χ_{8})=0$, where $\wedge^k \mathfrak{e}_8$ is an arbitrary exterior power of the adjoint representation and $χ_{i}$ is the $i^{\rm th}$ fundamental character. This has simultaneous implications for the theory of relativistic integrable systems, Seiberg-Witten theory, quantum topology, orbifold Gromov-Witten theory, and the arithmetic of elliptic curves. The solution is obtained by reducing the problem to a (large, but finite) dimensional linear problem, which is amenable to an efficient solution via distributed computation.

The Koszul map K

The Bitableax correspondence isomorphism/Koszul map Theorem (BCK Theorem, for short, Theorem 6.5 below) describes a relevant pair of mutually inverse vector space isomorphisms, the Koszul map K : U(gl(n))-> Sym(gl(n)) and the bitableaux correspondence iWe describe a linear \emph{equivariant isomorphism} $\mathcal{K}$ from the enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$ to the algebra ${\mathbb C}[M_{n,n}] \cong \mathbf{Sym}(gl(n))$ of polynomials in the entries of a ``generic'' square matrix of order $n$. The isomorphism $\mathcal{K}$ maps any {\textit{Capelli bitableau}} $[S|T]$ in $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$ to the {\textit{(determinantal) bitableau}} $(S|T)$ in ${\mathbb C}[M_{n,n}]$ and any {\textit{Capelli *-bitableau}} $[S|T]^*$ in $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$ to the {\textit{(permanental) *-bitableau}} $(S|T)^*$ in ${\mathbb C}[M_{n,n}]$. These results are far-reaching generalizations of the pioneering result of J.-L. Koszul [19] on the Capelli determinant in $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$ (see, e.g. [24], [27]). We introduce {\textit{column}} Capelli bitableaux and *-bitableaux in Section 6; since they are mapped by the isomorphism $\mathcal{K}$ to {\textit{monomials}} in ${\mathbb C}[M_{n,n}]$, this isomorphism can be regarded as a sharpened version of the PBW isomorphism for the enveloping algebra $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$. Since the center $\boldsymbolζ(n)$ of $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))$ equals the subalgebra of invariants $\mathbf{U}(gl(n))^{Ad_{gl(n)}}$, then $$ \mathcal{K} \big[ \boldsymbolζ(n) \big] = {\mathbb C}[M_{n,n}]^{ad_{gl(n)}}. $$somorphism B : Sym(gl(n)) -> U(gl(n)) that deeply link the enveloping algebra U(gl(n)) of the general linear Lie algebra gl(n) and the symmetric algebra Sym(gl(n)). The BCK Theorem can be regarded as a sharpened version of the PBW Theorem for the enveloping algebra U(gl(n)).

Young-Capelli bitableaux, Capelli immanants in U(gl(n)) and the Okounkov quantum immanants

We propose a new approach to a unified study of determinants, permanents, immanants, (determinantal) bitableaux and symmetrized bitableaux in the polynomial algebra $C[M_{n, n}]$ as well as of their Lie analogues in the enveloping algebra $U(gl(n))$. This leads to new relevant classes of elements in $U(gl(n))$: Capelli bitableaux, right Young-Capelli bitableaux and Capelli immanants. The set of standard Capelli bitableaux and the set of standard right Young-Capelli bitableaux are bases of $U(gl(n))$, whose action on the Gordan-Capelli basis of $C[M_{n, n}]$ have remarkable properties. Capelli immanants can be efficiently computed and provide a system of generators of $U(gl(n))$. The Okounkov quantum immanants are proved to be simple linear combinations of Capelli immanants. Several examples are provided throughout the paper.

$E_8$ spectral curves

I provide an explicit construction of spectral curves for the affine $\mathrm{E}_8$ relativistic Toda chain. Their closed form expression is obtained by determining the full set of character relations in the representation ring of $\mathrm{E}_8$ for the exterior algebra of the adjoint representation; this is in turn employed to provide an explicit construction of both integrals of motion and the action-angle map for the resulting integrable system. I consider two main areas of applications of these constructions. On the one hand, I consider the resulting family of spectral curves in the context of the correspondences between Toda systems, 5d Seiberg-Witten theory, Gromov-Witten theory of orbifolds of the resolved conifold, and Chern-Simons theory to establish a version of the B-model Gopakumar-Vafa correspondence for the $\mathrm{sl}_N$ Lê-Murakami-Ohtsuki invariant of the Poincaré integral homology sphere to all orders in $1/N$. On the other, I consider a degenerate version of the spectral curves and prove a 1-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg mirror theorem for the Frobenius manifold structure on the space of orbits of the extended affine Weyl group of type $\mathrm{E}_8$ introduced by Dubrovin-Zhang (equivalently, the orbifold quantum cohomology of the type-$\mathrm{E}_8$ polynomial $\mathbb{C} P^1$ orbifold). This leads to closed-form expressions for the flat co-ordinates of the Saito metric, the prepotential, and a higher genus mirror theorem based on the Chekhov-Eynard-Orantin recursion. I will also show how the constructions of the paper lead to a generalisation of a conjecture of Norbury-Scott to ADE $\mathbb{P}^1$-orbifolds, and a mirror of the Dubrovin-Zhang construction for all Weyl groups and choices of marked roots.

Rational reductions of the 2D-Toda hierarchy and mirror symmetry

We introduce and study a two-parameter family of symmetry reductions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchy, which are characterized by a rational factorization of the Lax operator into a product of an upper diagonal and the inverse of a lower diagonal formal difference operator. They subsume and generalize several classical 1 + 1 integrable hierarchies, such as the bigraded Toda hierarchy, the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy and E. Frenkel's q-deformed Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy. We establish their characterization in terms of block Toeplitz matrices for the associated factorization problem, and study their Hamiltonian structure. At the dispersionless level, we show how the Takasaki-Takebe classical limit gives rise to a family of non-conformal Frobenius manifolds with flat identity. We use this to generalize the relation of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy to Gromov-Witten theory by proving an analogous mirror theorem for rational reductions: in particular, we show that the dual-type Frobenius manifolds we obtain are isomorphic to the equivariant quantum cohomology of a family of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained from minimal resolutions of the local orbifold line.

The open string McKay correspondence for type A singularities

We formulate a Crepant Resolution Correspondence for open Gromov-Witten invariants (OCRC) of toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds by viewing the open theories as sections of Givental's symplectic vector space and the correspondence as a linear map of Givental spaces which identifies them. We deduce a Bryan-Graber-type statement for disk invariants and extend it to arbitrary genus zero topologies in the Hard Lefschetz case. Upon leveraging Iritani's theory of integral structures to equivariant quantum cohomology, we conjecture a general form of the symplectomorphism entering the OCRC which arises from a geometric correspondence at the equivariant K-theory level. We give a complete proof of this in the case of minimal resolutions of threefold A_n singularities. Our methods rely on a new description of the equivariant quantum D-modules underlying the Gromov-Witten theory of this class of targets.

The uses of the refined matrix model recursion

We study matrix models in the beta ensemble by building on the refined recursion relation proposed by Chekhov and Eynard. We present explicit results for the first beta-deformed corrections in the one-cut and the two-cut cases, as well as two applications to supersymmetric gauge theories: the calculation of superpotentials in N=1 gauge theories, and the calculation of vevs of surface operators in superconformal N=2 theories and their Liouville duals. Finally, we study the beta deformation of the Chern-Simons matrix model. Our results indicate that this model does not provide an appropriate description of the Omega-deformed topological string on the resolved conifold, and therefore that the beta-deformation might provide a different generalization of topological string theory in toric Calabi-Yau backgrounds.

Open topological strings and integrable hierarchies: Remodeling the A-model

We set up, purely in A-model terms, a novel formalism for the global solution of the open and closed topological A-model on toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. The starting point is to build on recent progress in the mathematical theory of open Gromov-Witten invariants of orbifolds; we interpret the localization formulae as relating D-brane amplitudes to closed string amplitudes perturbed with twisted masses through an analogue of the "loop insertion operator" of matrix models. We first generalize this form of open/closed string duality to general toric backgrounds in all chambers of the stringy Kaehler moduli space; secondly, we display a neat connection of the (gauged) closed string side to tau functions of 1+1 Hamiltonian integrable hierarchies, and exploit it to provide an effective computation of open string amplitudes. In doing so, we also provide a systematic treatment of the change of flat open moduli induced by a phase transition in the closed moduli space. We test our proposal in detail by providing an extensive number of checks. We also use our formalism to give a localization-based derivation of the Hori-Vafa spectral curves as coming from a resummation of A-model disc instantons.

The local Gromov-Witten theory of CP^1 and integrable hierarchies

In this paper we begin the study of the relationship between the local Gromov-Witten theory of Calabi-Yau rank two bundles over the projective line and the theory of integrable hierarchies. We first of all construct explicitly, in a large number of cases, the Hamiltonian dispersionless hierarchies that govern the full descendent genus zero theory. Our main tool is the application of Dubrovin's formalism, based on associativity equations, to the known results on the genus zero theory from local mirror symmetry and localization. The hierarchies we find are apparently new, with the exception of the resolved conifold O(-1) + O(-1) -> P1 in the equivariantly Calabi-Yau case. For this example the relevant dispersionless system turns out to be related to the long-wave limit of the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice. This identification provides us with a complete procedure to reconstruct the dispersive hierarchy which should conjecturally be related to the higher genus theory of the resolved conifold. We give a complete proof of this conjecture for genus g<=1; our methods are based on establishing, analogously to the case of KdV, a "quasi-triviality" property for the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy at the leading order of the dispersive expansion. We furthermore provide compelling evidence in favour of the resolved conifold/Ablowitz-Ladik correspondence at higher genus by testing it successfully in the primary sector for g=2.

Integrable hierarchies and the mirror model of local CP1

We study structural aspects of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) hierarchy in the light of its realization as a two-component reduction of the two-dimensional Toda hierarchy, and establish new results on its connection to the Gromov-Witten theory of local CP1. We first of all elaborate on the relation to the Toeplitz lattice and obtain a neat description of the Lax formulation of the AL system. We then study the dispersionless limit and rephrase it in terms of a conformal semisimple Frobenius manifold with non-constant unit, whose properties we thoroughly analyze. We build on this connection along two main strands. First of all, we exhibit a manifestly local bi-Hamiltonian structure of the Ablowitz-Ladik system in the zero-dispersion limit. Secondarily, we make precise the relation between this canonical Frobenius structure and the one that underlies the Gromov-Witten theory of the resolved conifold in the equivariantly Calabi-Yau case; a key role is played by Dubrovin's notion of "almost duality" of Frobenius manifolds. As a consequence, we obtain a derivation of genus zero mirror symmetry for local CP1 in terms of a dual logarithmic Landau-Ginzburg model.

Open orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of [C^3/Z_n]: localization and mirror symmetry

We develop a mathematical framework for the computation of open orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of [C^3/Z_n], and provide extensive checks with predictions from open string mirror symmetry. To this aim we set up a computation of open string invariants in the spirit of Katz-Liu, defining them by localization. The orbifold is viewed as an open chart of a global quotient of the resolved conifold, and the Lagrangian as the fixed locus of an appropriate anti-holomorphic involution. We consider two main applications of the formalism. After warming up with the simpler example of [C^3/Z_3], where we verify physical predictions of Bouchard, Klemm, Marino and Pasquetti, the main object of our study is the richer case of [C^3/Z_4], where two different choices are allowed for the Lagrangian. For one choice, we make numerical checks to confirm the B-model predictions; for the other, we prove a mirror theorem for orbifold disc invariants, match a large number of annulus invariants, and give mirror symmetry predictions for open string invariants of genus \leq 2.

Torus knots and mirror symmetry

We propose a spectral curve describing torus knots and links in the B-model. In particular, the application of the topological recursion to this curve generates all their colored HOMFLY invariants. The curve is obtained by exploiting the full Sl(2, Z) symmetry of the spectral curve of the resolved conifold, and should be regarded as the mirror of the topological D-brane associated to torus knots in the large N Gopakumar-Vafa duality. Moreover, we derive the curve as the large N limit of the matrix model computing torus knot invariants.

Whitney algebras and Grassmann's regressive products

Geometric products on tensor powers $Λ(V)^{\otimes m}$ of an exterior algebra and on Whitney algebras \cite{crasch} provide a rigorous version of Grassmann's {\it regressive products} of 1844 \cite{gra1}. We study geometric products and their relations with other classical operators on exterior algebras, such as the Hodge $\ast-$operators and the {\it join} and {\it meet} products in Cayley-Grassmann algebras \cite{BBR, Stew}. We establish encodings of tensor powers $Λ(V)^{\otimes m}$ and of Whitney algebras $W^m(M)$ in terms of letterplace algebras and of their geometric products in terms of divided powers of polarization operators. We use these encodings to provide simple proofs of the Crapo and Schmitt exchange relations in Whitney algebras and of two typical classes of identities in Cayley-Grassmann algebras.

Exact results for topological strings on resolved Y(p,q) singularities

We obtain exact results in α' for open and closed A-model topological string amplitudes on a large class of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds by using their correspondence with five dimensional gauge theories. The toric Calabi-Yau's that we analyze are obtained as minimal resolution of cones over Y(p,q) manifolds and give rise via M-theory compactification to SU(p) gauge theories on R^4 x S^1. As an application we present a detailed study of the local F_2 case and compute open and closed genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of the C^3/Z_4 orbifold. We also display the modular structure of the topological wave function and give predictions for higher genus amplitudes. The mirror curve in this case is the spectral curve of the relativistic A_1 Toda chain. Our results also indicate the existence of a wider class of relativistic integrable systems associated to generic Y(p,q) geometries.

Chern-Simons theory on L(p,q) lens spaces and Gopakumar-Vafa duality

We consider aspects of Chern-Simons theory on L(p,q) lens spaces and its relation with matrix models and topological string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds, searching for possible new large N dualities via geometric transition for non-SU(2) cyclic quotients of the conifold. To this aim we find, on one hand, some novel matrix integral representations of the SU(N) CS partition function in a generic flat background for the whole L(p,q) family and provide a solution for its large N dynamics; on the other, we perform in full detail the construction of a family of would-be dual closed string backgrounds via conifold geometric transition from T^*L(p,q). We can then explicitly prove that Gopakumar-Vafa duality in a fixed vacuum fails in the case q>1, and briefly discuss how it could be restored in a non-perturbative setting.
