Combinatorial model for the ferroelectric domain-network formation in hexagonal manganites

As the result of the high-temperature improper ferroelectric transition occurring in YMnO3 and other hexagonal manganites a striking domain pattern was observed: an emergence of six domains of alternating polarization from one point in a vortex-like pattern. We derive the formation and distribution of the domain-vortex network from a combinatorial analysis based on order-parameter symmetry and lattice geometry. The analysis leads to stable vortex-like configurations of the six domain states in the basal plane perpendicular to the polarization and to fragmented vortices in planes parallel to the polarization. The predictions are debated in the light of existing experimental and theoretical work on the vortex domain state. The relation of the symmetry-determined geomet- rical defects to the topological defects proposed to describe the behavior of YMnO3 near the Curie temperature is discussed.

Coupling of replicate order-parameters in incommensurate multiferroics

The specific properties of incommensurate multiferroic phases resulting from the coupling of order-parameter replicates are worked out using the illustrative example of iron vanadate. The dephasing between the order-parameter copies induces an additional broken symmetry phase corresponding to the lowest symmetry of the system and varies critically at the transition to the multiferroic phase. It reflects the temperature dependence of the angle between paired spins in the antiferromagnetic spiral structure. Expressing the transition order-parameters in terms of spin-density waves allows showing that isotropic exchange interactions contribute to the stabilization of the ferroelectric phase.

Multiferroicity and magnetoelectric coupling in α-CaCr2O4

Ferroelectricity in the incommensurate helical magnetic phase (below TN, 43K) of alpha CaCr2O4 has been confirmed by pyroelectric measurements. Magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric coupling exist below TN and are proportional to the square of magnetic field. From symmetry analysis, we suggest that the presence of an external electric field destabilizes the symmetrical 2221' phase and stabilizes 21' symmetry. This provides a unique system in which polarization varies as the fourth-degree of the order-parameter amplitude and exhibit a vanishingly small value below the first-order transition at TN, as observed experimentally.

Unconventional Multiferroicity in Cupric Oxide

The magnetic phase transitions reported below 230 K in cupric oxide are analyzed theoretically at the macroscopic and microscopic levels. The incommensurate multiferroic and lock-in commensurate phases are shown to realize an inverted sequence of symmetry-breaking mechanisms with respect to the usual sequence occurring in low temperature multiferroic compounds. The higher temperature spin-spiral phase results from coupled order-parameters which decouple at the lock-in transition to the commensurate ground state phase. Expressing the order-parameters in function of the magnetic spins allows determining the symmetries and magnetic structures of the equilibrium phases and the microscopic interactions which give rise to the polarization.

Spontaneous toroidic effects in Ba2CoGe2O7

The unusual magnetoelectric effects observed in the multiferroic phase arising below TN=6.7K in Ba2CoGe2O7 (BCG) are related to the spontaneous toroidal moment existing in this compound. The transition to the multiferroic state, which involves spontaneous magnetization, polarization and toroidal moment gives rise to spontaneous toroidic effects. These effects produce specific contributions to the spontaneous polarization and magnetization under applied magnetic or electric fields which provide indirect indications of the existence and role of the toroidal moment in multiferroic materials. The toroidic contribution to the electric polarization in BCG is shown to result from single-ion effects.
