Emergent helical texture of electric dipoles

Long-range ordering of magnetic dipoles in bulk materials gives rise to a broad range of magnetic structures, from simple collinear ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, to complex magnetic helicoidal textures stabilized by competing exchange interactions. In contrast, in the context of dipolar order in dielectric crystals, only parallel (ferroelectric) and antiparallel (antiferroelectric) collinear alignments of electric dipoles are typically considered. Here, we report an observation of incommensurate helical ordering of electric dipoles by light hole-doping of the quadruple perovskite BiMn7O12. In analogy with magnetism, the electric dipole helicoidal texture is also stabilized by competing instabilities. Specifically, orbital ordering and lone electron pair stereochemical activity compete, giving rise to phase transitions from a non-chiral cubic structure, to an incommensurate electric dipole and orbital helix, via an intermediate density wave.

Nature of Partial Magnetic Order in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

Partially-ordered magnets are distinct from both spin liquids and conventional ordered magnets because order and disorder coexist in the same magnetic phase. Here, we determine the nature of partial order in the canonical frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Using single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements in applied magnetic field, magnetic symmetry analysis, inelastic neutron-scattering measurements, and spin-wave modeling, we show that its low-temperature magnetic structure involves two propagation vectors (2-$\mathbf{k}$ structure) with suppressed ordered magnetic moments and enhanced spin-wave fluctuations. Our experimental results support theoretical predictions of thermal fluctuation-driven order in Gd$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Neutron diffraction and symmetry analysis of the martensitic transformation in Co-doped Ni$_2$MnGa

Martensitic transformations are strain driven displacive transitions governing the mechanical and physical properties in intermetallic materials. This is the case in Ni$_2$MnGa, where the martensite transition is at the heart of the striking magnetic shape memory and magneto-caloric properties. Interestingly, the martensitic transformation is preceded by a pre-martensite phase, and the role of this precursor and its influence on the martensitic transition and properties is still a matter of debate. In this work, we report on the influence of Co doping (Ni$_{50-x}$Co$_x$Mn$_{25}$Ga$_{25}$ with x = 3 and 5) on the martensitic transformation path in stoichiometric Ni$_2$MnGa by neutron diffraction. The use of the superspace formalism to describe the crystal structure of the modulated martensitic phases, joined with a group theoretical analysis allows unfolding the different distortions featuring the structural transitions. Finally, a general Landau thermodynamic potential of the martensitic transformation, based on the symmetry analysis is outlined. The combined use of phenomenological and crystallographic studies highlights the close relationship between the lattice distortions at the core of the Ni$_2$MnGa physical properties and, more in general, on the properties of the martensitic transformations in the Ni-Mn based Heusler systems.

Unusual effects of magnetic dilution in the ferrimagnetic columnar ordered $\mathrm{Sm_2MnMnMn_{4-x}Ti_xO_{12}}$ perovskites

Powder neutron diffraction experiments have been employed to establish the effects of site-selective magnetic dilution in the Sm2MnMnMn4-x Tix O12 A-site columnar ordered quadruple perovskite manganites (x = 1, x = 2 and x = 3). We show that in all three compositions the Mn ions adopt a collinear ferrimagnetic structure below 27 K, 62 K and 34 K, respectively. An unexpected increase in the ordering temperature was observed between the x = 1 and x = 2 samples, which indicates a considerable departure from mean field behaviour. This result is corroborated by large reductions in the theoretical ground state magnetic moments observed across the series, which indicate the presence of spin fluctuations and or disorder. We show that long range magnetic order in the x = 3 sample, which occurs below the percolation threshold for B-B exchange, can only be understood to arise if magnetic order in Sm2MnMnMn4-xTixO12 is mediated via both A-B and B-B exchange, hence confirming the importance of A-B exchange interactions in these materials. Finally we show that site-selective magnetic dilution enables the tuning of a ferrimagnetic compensation point and the introduction of temperature-induced magnetization reversal.

Coupling between Spin and Charge Order Driven by Magnetic Field in Triangular Ising System LuFe2O4+δ

We present a study of the magnetic-field effect on spin correlations in the charge ordered triangular Ising system LuFe2O4+δ through single crystal neutron diffraction. In the absence of a magnetic field, the strong diffuse neutron scattering observed below the Neel temperature (TN = 240 K) indicates that LuFe2O4+δ shows short-range, two-dimensional (2D) correlations in the FeO5 triangular layers, characterized by the development of a magnetic scattering rod along the 1/3 1/3 L direction, persisting down to 5 K. We also found that on top of the 2D correlations, a long range ferromagnetic component associated with the propagation vector k1 = 0 sets in at around 240 K. On the other hand, an external magnetic field applied along the c-axis effectively favours a three-dimensional (3D) spin correlation between the FeO5 bilayers evidenced by the increase of the intensity of satellite reflections with propagation vector k2 = (1/3, 1/3, 3/2). This magnetic modulation is identical to the charge ordered superstructure, highlighting the field-promoted coupling between the spin and charge degrees of freedom. Formation of the 3D spin correlations suppresses both the rod-type diffuse scattering and the k1 component. Simple symmetry-based arguments provide a natural explanation of the observed phenomenon and put forward a possible charge redistribution in the applied magnetic field.

Unusual magnetic structure of high-pressure synthesized perovskites ACrO3(A=Sc, In, Tl)

Magnetic structures of metastable perovskites ScCrO3, InCrO3 and TlCrO3, stabilized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, have been studied by neutron powder diffraction. Similar to the other orthochromites LnCrO3 (Ln=lanthanide or Y), these materials crystallize into the orthorhombic structure with Pnma10 symmetry. The spin configuration of the metastable perovskites has been found to be C-type, contrasting with the G-type structure usually observed in LnCrO3. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the Ctype structure found in ScCrO3 and InCrO3 is attributed to a ferromagnetic (FM) nearest-neighbor interaction, while in TlCrO3, this type of magnetic ordering is stabilized by a strong next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange. The spins in the C-type magnetic structure line up along the orthorhombic b-axis, yielding the Pnma magnetic symmetry. The dominant mechanism controlling this spin direction has been concluded to be the single ion anisotropy imposed by a uniaxial distortion of CrO6 octahedra.

Nature of Partial Magnetic Order in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

The frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ has an unusual partially-ordered magnetic structure at the lowest measurable temperatures. This structure is currently believed to involve four magnetic propagation vectors $\mathbf{k}\in \langle \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \rangle^*$ in a cubic 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure, based on analysis of magnetic diffuse-scattering data [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16, L321 (2004)]. Here, we present three pieces of evidence against the 4-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. First, we report single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements as a function of applied magnetic field, which are consistent with the selective field-induced population of non-cubic magnetic domains. Second, we present evidence from high-resolution powder neutron-diffraction measurements that rhombohedral strains exist within magnetic domains, which may be generated by magneto-elastic coupling only for the alternative 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure. Finally, we show that the argument previously used to rule out the 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure is flawed, and demonstrate that magnetic diffuse-scattering data can actually be fitted quantitatively by a 1-$\mathbf{k}$ structure in which spin fluctuations on ordered and disordered magnetic sites are strongly coupled. Our results provide an experimental foundation on which to base theoretical descriptions of partially-ordered states.

Tetragonal magnetic phase in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ from x-ray and neutron diffraction

Combined neutron and x-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate the formation of a low-temperature minority tetragonal phase in Ba$_{0.76}$K$_{0.24}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in addition to the majority magnetic, orthorhombic phase. A coincident enhancement in the magnetic ($\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{2}$ 1) peaks shows that this minority phase is of the same type that was observed in Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.24 \leq x \leq 0.28$), in which the magnetic moments reorient along the $c$-axis. This is evidence that the tetragonal magnetic phase is a universal feature of the hole-doped iron-based superconductors.

Structural, Magnetic, and Superconducting Properties of Ba1-xNaxFe2As2

We report the results of a systematic investigation of the phase diagram of the iron-based superconductor system, Ba1-xNaxFe2As2, from x = 0.1 to x = 1.0 using high resolution neutron and x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. We find that the coincident structural and magnetic phase transition to an orthorhombic (O) structure with space group Fmmm and a striped antiferromagnet (AF) with space group F(C)mm'm' in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 is of first order. A complete suppression of the magnetic phase is observed by x = 0.30, and bulk superconductivity occurs at a critical concentration near 0.15. We compare the new findings to the previously reported results of the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 solid solution in order to resolve the differing effects of band filling and A-site cation size on the properties of the magnetic and superconducting ground states. The substantial size difference between Na and K causes various changes in the lattice trends, yet the overarching property phase diagram from the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 phase diagram carries over to the Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 solid solution. We note that the composition dependence of the c axis turns over from positive to negative around x = 0.35, unlike the K-substituted materials. We show that this can be understood by invoking steric effects; primarily the Fe2As2 layer shape is dictated mostly by the electronic filling, which secondarily induces an interlayer spacing adjusted to compensate for the given cation volume. This exemplifies the primacy of even subtle features in the Fe2As2 layer in controlling both the structure and properties in the uncollapsed 122 phases.

First-order multi-k phase transitions and magnetoelectric effects in multiferroic Co3TeO6

A theoretical description of the sequence of magnetic phases in Co3TeO6 is presented. The strongly first-order character of the transition to the commensurate multiferroic ground state, induced by coupled order parameters corresponding to different wavevectors, is related to a large magnetoelastic effect with an exchange energy critically sensitive to the interatomic spacing. The monoclinic magnetic symmetry C2' of the multiferroic phase permits spontaneous polarization and magnetization as well as the linear magnetoelectric effect. The existence of weakly ferromagnetic domains is verified experimentally by second harmonic generation measurements.

Phase Diagram of Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We report the results of a systematic investigation of the phase diagram of the iron-based superconductor, Ba1-xKxFe2As2, from x = 0 to x = 1.0 using high resolution neutron and x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The polycrystalline samples were prepared with an estimated compositional variation of \Deltax <~ 0.01, allowing a more precise estimate of the phase boundaries than reported so far. At room temperature, Ba1-xKxFe2As2 crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with the space group symmetry of I4/mmm, but at low doping, the samples undergo a coincident first-order structural and magnetic phase transition to an orthorhombic (O) structure with space group Fmmm and a striped antiferromagnet (AF) with space group Fcmm'm'. The transition temperature falls from a maximum of 139K in the undoped compound to 0K at x = 0.252, with a critical exponent as a function of doping of 0.25(2) and 0.12(1) for the structural and magnetic order parameters, respectively. The onset of superconductivity occurs at a critical concentration of x = 0.130(3) and the superconducting transition temperature grows linearly with x until it crosses the AF/O phase boundary. Below this concentration, there is microscopic phase coexistence of the AF/O and superconducting order parameters, although a slight suppression of the AF/O order is evidence that the phases are competing. At higher doping, superconductivity has a maximum Tc of 38 K at x = 0.4 falling to 3 K at x = 1.0. We discuss reasons for the suppression of the spin-density-wave order and the electron-hole asymmetry in the phase diagram.

Unconventional Multiferroicity in Cupric Oxide

The magnetic phase transitions reported below 230 K in cupric oxide are analyzed theoretically at the macroscopic and microscopic levels. The incommensurate multiferroic and lock-in commensurate phases are shown to realize an inverted sequence of symmetry-breaking mechanisms with respect to the usual sequence occurring in low temperature multiferroic compounds. The higher temperature spin-spiral phase results from coupled order-parameters which decouple at the lock-in transition to the commensurate ground state phase. Expressing the order-parameters in function of the magnetic spins allows determining the symmetries and magnetic structures of the equilibrium phases and the microscopic interactions which give rise to the polarization.

Spontaneous toroidic effects in Ba2CoGe2O7

The unusual magnetoelectric effects observed in the multiferroic phase arising below TN=6.7K in Ba2CoGe2O7 (BCG) are related to the spontaneous toroidal moment existing in this compound. The transition to the multiferroic state, which involves spontaneous magnetization, polarization and toroidal moment gives rise to spontaneous toroidic effects. These effects produce specific contributions to the spontaneous polarization and magnetization under applied magnetic or electric fields which provide indirect indications of the existence and role of the toroidal moment in multiferroic materials. The toroidic contribution to the electric polarization in BCG is shown to result from single-ion effects.
