A type I conjecture and boundary representations of hyperbolic groups

We establish new results on the weak containment of quasi-regular and Koopman representations of a second countable locally compact group $G$ associated with non-singular $G$-spaces. We deduce that any two boundary representations of a hyperbolic locally compact group are weakly equivalent. We also show that non-amenable hyperbolic locally compact groups with a cocompact amenable subgroup are characterized by the property that any two proper length functions are homothetic up to an additive constant. Combining those results with the work of Ł. Garncarek on the irreducibility of boundary representations of discrete hyperbolic groups, we deduce that a type I hyperbolic group with a cocompact lattice contains a cocompact amenable subgroup. Specializing to groups acting on trees, we answer a question of C. Houdayer and S. Raum.

Hyperbolic generalized triangle groups, property (T) and finite simple quotients

We construct several series of explicit presentations of infinite hyperbolic groups enjoying Kazhdan's property (T). Some of them are significantly shorter than the previously known shortest examples. Moreover, we show that some of those hyperbolic Kazhdan groups possess finite simple quotient groups of arbitrarily large rank; they constitute the first known specimens combining those properties. All the hyperbolic groups we consider are non-positively curved k-fold generalized triangle groups, i.e. groups that possess a simplicial action on a CAT(0) triangle complex, which is sharply transitive on the set of triangles, and such that edge-stabilizers are cyclic of order k.

Approximating simple locally compact groups by their dense locally compact subgroups

The class, denoted by $\mathscr{S}$, of totally disconnected locally compact groups which are non-discrete, compactly generated, and topologically simple contains many compelling examples. In recent years, a general theory for these groups, which studies the interaction between the compact open subgroups and the global structure, has emerged. In this article, we study the non-discrete totally disconnected locally compact groups $H$ that admit a continuous embedding with dense image into some $G\in \mathscr{S}$; that is, we consider the dense locally compact subgroups of groups $G\in \mathscr{S}$. We identify a class $\mathscr{R}$ of almost simple groups which properly contains $\mathscr{S}$ and is moreover stable under passing to a non-discrete dense locally compact subgroup. We show that $\mathscr{R}$ enjoys many of the same properties previously obtained for $\mathscr{S}$ and establish various original results for $\mathscr{R}$ that are also new for the subclass $\mathscr{S}$, notably concerning the structure of the local Sylow subgroups and the full automorphism group.

Chabauty limits of simple groups acting on trees

Let $T$ be a locally finite tree without vertices of degree $1$. We show that among the closed subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$ acting with a bounded number of orbits, the Chabauty-closure of the set of topologically simple groups is the set of groups without proper open subgroup of finite index. Moreover, if all vertices of $T$ have degree $\geq 3$, then the set of isomorphism classes of topologically simple closed subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$ acting doubly transitively on $\partial T$ carries a natural compact Hausdorff topology inherited from Chabauty. Some of our considerations are valid in the context of automorphism groups of locally finite connected graphs. Applications to Weyl-transitive automorphism groups of buildings are also presented.

An indiscrete Bieberbach theorem: from amenable CAT(0) groups to Tits buildings

Non-positively curved spaces admitting a cocompact isometric action of an amenable group are investigated. A classification is established under the assumption that there is no global fixed point at infinity under the full isometry group. The visual boundary is then a spherical building. When the ambient space is geodesically complete, it must be a product of flats, symmetric spaces, biregular trees and Bruhat--Tits buildings. We provide moreover a sufficient condition for a spherical building arising as the visual boundary of a proper CAT(0) space to be Moufang, and deduce that an irreducible locally finite Euclidean building of dimension at least 2 is a Bruhat--Tits building if and only if its automorphism group acts cocompactly and chamber-transitively at infinity.

Orthogonal forms of Kac--Moody groups are acylindrically hyperbolic

We give sufficient conditions for a group acting on a geodesic metric space to be acylindrically hyperbolic and mention various applications to groups acting on CAT($0$) spaces. We prove that a group acting on an irreducible non-spherical non-affine building is acylindrically hyperbolic provided there is a chamber with finite stabiliser whose orbit contains an apartment. Finally, we show that the following classes of groups admit an action on a building with those properties: orthogonal forms of Kac--Moody groups over arbitrary fields, and irreducible graph products of arbitrary groups - recovering a result of Minasyan--Osin.

At infinity of finite-dimensional CAT(0) spaces

We show that any filtering family of closed convex subsets of a finite-dimensional CAT(0) space $X$ has a non-empty intersection in the visual bordification $ \bar{X} = X \cup \partial X$. Using this fact, several results known for proper CAT(0) spaces may be extended to finite-dimensional spaces, including the existence of canonical fixed points at infinity for parabolic isometries, algebraic and geometric restrictions on amenable group actions, and geometric superrigidity for non-elementary actions of irreducible uniform lattices in products of locally compact groups.

Relative amenability

We introduce a relative fixed point property for subgroups of a locally compact group, which we call relative amenability. It is a priori weaker than amenability. We establish equivalent conditions, related among others to a problem studied by Reiter in 1968. We record a solution to Reiter's problem. We study the class X of groups in which relative amenability is equivalent to amenability for all closed subgroups; we prove that X contains all familiar groups. Actually, no group is known to lie outside X. Since relative amenability is closed under Chabauty limits, it follows that any Chabauty limit of amenable subgroups remains amenable if the ambient group belongs to the vast class X.

Amenable hyperbolic groups

We give a complete characterization of the locally compact groups that are non-elementary Gromov-hyperbolic and amenable. They coincide with the class of mapping tori of discrete or continuous one-parameter groups of compacting automorphisms. We moreover give a description of all Gromov-hyperbolic locally compact groups with a cocompact amenable subgroup: modulo a compact normal subgroup, these turn out to be either rank one simple Lie groups, or automorphism groups of semi-regular trees acting doubly transitively on the set of ends. As an application, we show that the class of hyperbolic locally compact groups with a cusp-uniform non-uniform lattice, is very restricted.

Automorphism groups of right-angled buildings: simplicity and local splittings

We show that the group of type-preserving automorphisms of any irreducible semi-regular thick right-angled building is abstractly simple. When the building is locally finite, this gives a large family of compactly generated (abstractly) simple locally compact groups. Specializing to appropriate cases, we obtain examples of such simple groups that are locally indecomposable, but have locally normal subgroups decomposing non-trivially as direct products.

Buildings with isolated subspaces and relatively hyperbolic Coxeter groups

Let $(W, S)$ be a Coxeter system. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the Coxeter diagram of $(W, S)$ for $W$ to be relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection of finitely generated subgroups. The peripheral subgroups are necessarily parabolic subgroups (in the sense of Coxeter group theory). As an application, we present a criterion for the maximal flats of the Davis complex of $(W,S)$ to be isolated. If this is the case, then the maximal affine sub-buildings of any building of type $(W,S)$ are isolated.

Gelfand pairs and strong transitivity for Euclidean buildings

Let G be a locally compact group acting properly by type-preserving automorphisms on a locally finite thick Euclidean building $Δ$ and K be the stabilizer of a special vertex in $Δ$. It is known that (G, K) is a Gelfand pair as soon as G acts strongly transitively on $Δ$; this is in particular the case when G is a semi-simple algebraic group over a local field. We show a converse to this statement, namely: if (G, K) is a Gelfand pair and G acts cocompactly on $Δ$, then the action is strongly transitive. The proof uses the existence of strongly regular hyperbolic elements in G and their peculiar dynamics on the spherical building at infinity. Other equivalent formulations are also obtained, including the fact that G is strongly transitive on $Δ$ if and only if it is strongly transitive on the spherical building at infinity.

Limits of contraction groups and the Tits core

The Tits core G^+ of a totally disconnected locally compact group G is defined as the abstract subgroup generated by the closures of the contraction groups of all its elements. We show that a dense subgroup is normalised by the Tits core if and only if it contains it. It follows that every dense subnormal subgroup contains the Tits core. In particular, if G is topologically simple, then the Tits core is abstractly simple, and if G^+ is non-trivial then it is the unique minimal dense normal subgroup. The proofs are based on the fact, of independent interest, that the map which associates to an element the closure of its contraction group is continuous.

Fixed points and amenability in non-positive curvature

Consider a proper cocompact CAT(0) space X. We give a complete algebraic characterisation of amenable groups of isometries of X. For amenable discrete subgroups, an even narrower description is derived, implying Q-linearity in the torsion-free case. We establish Levi decompositions for stabilisers of points at infinity of X, generalising the case of linear algebraic groups to Is(X). A geometric counterpart of this sheds light on the refined bordification of X (à la Karpelevich) and leads to a converse to the Adams-Ballmann theorem. It is further deduced that unimodular cocompact groups cannot fix any point at infinity except in the Euclidean factor; this fact is needed for the study of CAT(0) lattices. Various fixed point results are derived as illustrations.

On conjugacy separability of some Coxeter groups and parabolic-preserving automorphisms

We prove that even Coxeter groups, whose Coxeter diagrams contain no (4,4,2) triangles, are conjugacy separable. In particular, this applies to all right-angled Coxeter groups or word hyperbolic even Coxeter groups. For an arbitrary Coxeter group W, we also study the relationship between Coxeter generating sets that give rise to the same collection of parabolic subgroups. As an application we show that if an automorphism of W preserves the conjugacy class of every sufficiently short element then it is inner. We then derive consequences for the outer automorphism groups of Coxeter groups.

Open subgroups of locally compact Kac-Moody groups

Let G be a complete Kac-Moody group over a finite field. It is known that G possesses a BN-pair structure, all of whose parabolic subgroups are open in G. We show that, conversely, every open subgroup of G is contained with finite index in some parabolic subgroup; moreover there are only finitely many such parabolic subgroups. The proof uses some new results on parabolic closures in Coxeter groups. In particular, we give conditions ensuring that the parabolic closure of the product of two elements in a Coxeter group contains the respective parabolic closures of those elements.

A lattice in more than two Kac--Moody groups is arithmetic

Let $Γ$ be an irreducible lattice in a product of n infinite irreducible complete Kac-Moody groups of simply laced type over finite fields. We show that if n is at least 3, then each Kac-Moody groups is in fact a simple algebraic group over a local field and $Γ$ is an arithmetic lattice. This relies on the following alternative which is satisfied by any irreducible lattice provided n is at least 2: either $Γ$ is an S-arithmetic (hence linear) group, or it is not residually finite. In that case, it is even virtually simple when the ground field is large enough. More general CAT(0) groups are also considered throughout.

Rank rigidity for CAT(0) cube complexes

We prove that any group acting essentially without a fixed point at infinity on an irreducible finite-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex contains a rank one isometry. This implies that the Rank Rigidity Conjecture holds for CAT(0) cube complexes. We derive a number of other consequences for CAT(0) cube complexes, including a purely geometric proof of the Tits Alternative, an existence result for regular elements in (possibly non-uniform) lattices acting on cube complexes, and a characterization of products of trees in terms of bounded cohomology.

Simple locally compact groups acting on trees and their germs of automorphisms

Automorphism groups of locally finite trees provide a large class of examples of simple totally disconnected locally compact groups. It is desirable to understand the connections between the global and local structure of such a group. Topologically, the local structure is given by the commensurability class of a vertex stabiliser; on the other hand, the action on the tree suggests that the local structure should correspond to the local action of a stabiliser of a vertex on its neighbours. We study the interplay between these different aspects for the special class of groups satisfying Tits' independence property. We show that such a group has few open subgroups if and only if it acts locally primitively. Moreover, we show that it always admits many germs of automorphisms which do not extend to automorphisms, from which we deduce a negative answer to a question by George Willis. Finally, under suitable assumptions, we compute the full group of germs of automorphisms; in some specific cases, these turn out to be simple and compactly generated, thereby providing a new infinite family of examples which generalise Neretin's group of spheromorphisms. Our methods describe more generally the abstract commensurator group for a large family of self-replicating profinite branch groups.

Bipolar Coxeter groups

We consider the class of those Coxeter groups for which removing from the Cayley graph any tubular neighbourhood of any wall leaves exactly two connected components. We call these Coxeter groups bipolar. They include both the virtually Poincare duality Coxeter groups and the infinite irreducible 2-spherical ones. We show in a geometric way that a bipolar Coxeter group admits a unique conjugacy class of Coxeter generating sets. Moreover, we provide a characterisation of bipolar Coxeter groups in terms of the associated Coxeter diagram.

Decomposing locally compact groups into simple pieces

We present a contribution to the structure theory of locally compact groups. The emphasis is on compactly generated locally compact groups which admit no infinite discrete quotient. It is shown that such a group possesses a characteristic cocompact subgroup which is either connected or admits a non-compact non-discrete topologically simple quotient. We also provide a description of characteristically simple groups and of groups all of whose proper quotients are compact. We show that Noetherian locally compact groups without infinite discrete quotient admit a subnormal series with all subquotients compact, compactly generated Abelian, or compactly generated topologically simple. Two appendices introduce results and examples around the concept of quasi-product.

Can an anisotropic reductive group admit a Tits system?

Seeking for a converse to a well-known theorem by Borel-Tits, we address the question whether the group of rational points G(k) of an anisotropic reductive k-group may admit a split spherical BN-pair. We show that if k is a perfect field or a local field, then such a BN-pair must be virtually trivial. We also consider arbitrary compact groups and show that the only abstract BN-pairs they can admit are spherical, and even virtually trivial provided they are split.

On the distortion of twin building lattices

We show that twin building lattices are undistorted in their ambient group; equivalently, the orbit map of the lattice to the product of the associated twin buildings is a quasi-isometric embedding. As a consequence, we provide an estimate of the quasi-flat rank of these lattices, which implies that there are infinitely many quasi-isometry classes of finitely presented simple groups. In an appendix, we describe how non-distortion of lattices is related to the integrability of the structural cocycle.

Amenable groups and Hadamard spaces with a totally disconnected isometry group

Let $X$ be a locally compact Hadamard space and $G$ be a totally disconnected group acting continuously, properly and cocompactly on $X$. We show that a closed subgroup of $G$ is amenable if and only if it is (topologically locally finite)-by-(virtually abelian). We are led to consider a set $\bdfine X$ which is a refinement of the visual boundary $\bd X$. For each $x \in \bdfine X$, the stabilizer $G_x$ is amenable.

A uniform bound on the nilpotency degree of certain subalgebras of Kac-Moody algebras

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a Kac-Moody algebra and $\mathfrak{b}_1, \mathfrak{b}_2$ be Borel subalgebras of opposite signs. The intersection $\mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{b}_1 \cap \mathfrak{b}_2$ is a finite-dimensional solvable subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. We show that the nilpotency degree of $[\mathfrak{b}, \mathfrak{b}]$ is bounded from above by a constant depending only on $\mathfrak{g}$. This confirms a conjecture of Y. Billig and A. Pianzola \cite{BilligPia95}.

On geometric flats in the {${\rm CAT}(0)$} realization of Coxeter groups and Tits buildings

Given a complete CAT(0) space $X$ endowed with a geometric action of a group $Γ$, it is known that if $Γ$ contains a free abelian group of rank $n$, then $X$ contains a geometric flat of dimension $n$. We prove a converse of this statement in the special case where $X$ is a convex subcomplex of the CAT(0) realization of a Coxeter group $W$, and $Γ$ is a subgroup of $W$. In particular a convex cocompact subgroup of a Coxeter group is Gromov-hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain a free abelian group of rank 2. Our result also provides an explicit control on geometric flats in the CAT(0) realization of arbitrary Tits buildings.

Simplicity and superrigidity of twin building lattices

Kac-Moody groups over finite fields are finitely generated groups. Most of them can naturally be viewed as irreducible lattices in products of two closed automorphism groups of non-positively curved twinned buildings: those are the most important (but not the only) examples of twin building lattices. We prove that these lattices are simple if and only if the corresponding buildings are (irreducible and) not of affine type (i.e. they are not Bruhat-Tits buildings). In fact, many of them are finitely presented and enjoy property (T). Our arguments explain geometrically why simplicity fails to hold only for affine Kac-Moody groups. Moreover we prove that a nontrivial continuous homomorphism from a completed Kac-Moody group is always proper. We also show that Kac-Moody lattices fulfill conditions implying strong superrigidity properties for isometric actions on non-positively curved metric spaces. Most results apply to the general class of twin building lattices.
