Optimal velocity control of a Brinkman-Cahn-Hilliard system with curvature effects

We address an optimal control problem governed by a system coupling a Brinkman-type momentum equation for the velocity field with a sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard equation for the phase variable, incorporating curvature effects in the free energy. The control acts as a distributed velocity control, allowing for the manipulation of the flow field and, consequently, the phase separation dynamics. We establish the existence of optimal controls, prove the Fréchet differentiability of the control-to-state operator, and derive first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality involving the adjoint state variables. We also discuss the aspect of sparsity. Beyond its analytical novelty, this work provides a rigorous control framework for Brinkman-Cahn-Hilliard systems incorporating a curvature regularization, offering a foundation for applications in microfluidic design and controlled pattern formation.

A Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to an Allen-Cahn model of viscoelasticity at large strains

We propose a new Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to incompressible viscoelasticity at large strains, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model and formulated in the Eulerian configuration. A new kind of diffusive regularization, of Allen-Cahn type, is introduced in the transport equation for the deformation gradient, together with a regularizing interface term depending on the gradient of the deformation gradient in the free energy of the system. We study the global existence of a weak solution for the model. While standard diffusive regularizations of the transport equation for the deformation gradient presented in literature allows the existence study only for simplified cases, i.e. in two space dimensions and for convex elastic free energy densities of Neo-Hookean type which are independent from the phase field variable, the present regularization allows to study more general cases. In particular, we obtain the global existence of a weak solution in three space dimensions and for generic nonlinear elastic energy densities with polynomial growth. Our analysis considers elastic free energy densities which depend on the phase field variable and which can possibly degenerate for some values of the phase field variable. By means of an iterative argument based on elliptic regularity bootstrap steps, we find the maximum allowed polynomial growths of the Cahn-Hilliard potential and the elastic energy density which guarantee the existence of a solution in three space dimensions. We propose two unconditionally energy stable finite element approximations of the model, based on convex splitting ideas and on the use of a scalar auxiliary variable, proving the existence and stability of discrete solutions. We finally report numerical results for different test cases with shape memory alloy type free energy with pure phases characterized by different elastic properties.

A Cahn-Hilliard model coupled to viscoelasticity with large deformations

We propose a new class of phase field models coupled to viscoelasticity with large deformations, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model composed by a phase with elastic properties and a liquid phase. The model is formulated in the Eulerian configuration and it is derived by imposing the mass balance for the mixture components and the momentum balance that comes from a generalized form of the principle of virtual powers. The latter considers the presence of a system of microforces and microstresses associated to the microscopic interactions between the mixture's constituents together with a system of macroforces and macrostresses associated to their viscoelastic behavior, taking into account also the friction between the phases. The free energy density of the system is given as the sum of a Cahn-Hilliard term and an elastic polyconvex term, with a coupling between the phase field variable and the elastic deformation gradient in the elastic contribution. General constitutive assumptions complying with a mechanical version of the second law of thermodynamics in isothermal situations are taken. We study the global existence of a weak solution for a simplified and regularized version of the general model, which considers an incompressible elastic free energy of Neo-Hookean type with elastic coefficients depending on the phase field variable. The regularization is properly designed to deal with the coupling between the phase field variable and the elastic deformation gradient in the elastic energy density. The analysis is made both in two and three space dimensions.

A Cahn-Hilliard system with forward-backward dynamic boundary condition and non-smooth potentials

A system with equation and dynamic boundary condition of Cahn-Hilliard type is considered. This system comes from a derivation performed in Liu-Wu (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 233 (2019), 167--247) via an energetic variational approach. Actually, the related problem can be seen as a transmission problem for the phase variable in the bulk and the corresponding variable on the boundary. The asymptotic behavior as the coefficient of the surface diffusion acting on the boundary phase variable goes to 0 is investigated. By this analysis we obtain a forward-backward dynamic boundary condition at the limit. We can deal with a general class of potentials having a double-well structure, including the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. We illustrate that the limit problem is well-posed by also proving a continuous dependence estimate. Moreover, in the case when the two graphs, in the bulk and on the boundary, exhibit the same growth, we show that the solution of the limit problem is more regular and we prove an error estimate for a suitable order of the diffusion parameter.

Optimal control of a nonconserved phase field model of Caginalp type with thermal memory and double obstacle potential

In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems for a nonlinear state system which constitutes a version of the Caginalp phase field system modeling nonisothermal phase transitions with a nonconserved order parameter that takes thermal memory into account. The state system, which is a first-order approximation of a thermodynamically consistent system, is inspired by the theories developed by Green and Naghdi. It consists of two nonlinearly coupled partial differential equations that govern the phase dynamics and the universal balance law for internal energy, written in terms of the phase variable and the so-called thermal displacement, i.e., a primitive with respect to time of temperature. We extend recent results obtained for optimal control problems in which the free energy governing the phase transition was differentiable (i.e., of regular or logarithmic type) to the nonsmooth case of a double obstacle potential. As is well known, in this nondifferentiable case standard methods to establish the existence of appropriate Lagrange multipliers fail. This difficulty is overcome utilizing of the so-called deep quench approach. Namely, the double obstacle potential is approximated by a family of (differentiable) logarithmic ones for which the existence of optimal controls and first-order necessary conditions of optimality in terms of the adjoint state variables and a variational inequality are known. By proving appropriate bounds for the adjoint states of the approximating systems, we can pass to the limit in the corresponding first-order necessary conditions, thereby establishing meaningful first-order necessary optimality conditions also for the case of the double obstacle potential.

Well-posedness and optimal control for a Cahn-Hilliard-Oono system with control in the mass term

The paper treats the problem of optimal distributed control of a Cahn-Hilliard-Oono system in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $1\leq d\leq 3$, with the control located in the mass term and admitting general potentials that include both the case of a regular potential and the case of some singular potential. The first part of the paper is concerned with the dependence of the phase variable on the control variable. In the case of a logarithmic potential, we need to prove an ad hoc strict separation property, and for this reason we have to restrict ourselves to the case $d = 2$. In the rest of the work, we study the necessary first-order optimality conditions, which are proved under suitable compatibility conditions on the initial datum of the phase variable and the time derivative of the control, at least in case of potentials having unbounded domain. PLEASE NOTE: A revised version of this paper has been published in Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. S 15 (2022), 2135-2172: the authors point out that both the published version and the arXiv preprint contain a trivial mistake in formula (2.21), which leads to suitable changes in the assumption (2.10) and in some occurrences of it. Namely, (2.21) and (2.10) become $ \bar φ(t) = \bar φ_0 e^{-t} + \int_0^t e^{-(t-s)} \bar u(s) \, ds$ for every $t\in[0,T]$, and $-M - (\barφ_0)^- , M + (\barφ_0)^+$ belong to the interior of $D(β)$, respectively. The formula just after (2.21) becomes $-M - (\barφ_0)^- \leq \bar φ(t) \leq M + (\barφ_0)^+$ and a similar change must be done in (4.20). The first line of (2.24) is now implied by the new (2.21). Next, (2.39) becomes $-(M+ R) - (\barφ_0)^- , (M+ R) + (\barφ_0)^+$ belong to the interior of $D(β)$. Similar changes must be done in the interval written just two lines before (4.18) and in (4.18) itself.

An asymptotic analysis for a generalized Cahn-Hilliard system with fractional operators

In the recent paper `Well-posedness and regularity for a generalized fractional Cahn-Hilliard system' (Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei Rend. Lincei Mat. Appl. 30 (2019), 437-478 -- see also arXiv:1804.11290), the same authors have studied viscous and nonviscous Cahn-Hilliard systems of two operator equations in which nonlinearities of double-well type, like regular or logarithmic potentials, as well as nonsmooth potentials with indicator functions, were admitted. The operators appearing in the system equations are fractional powers $A^{2r}$ and $B^{2σ}$ (in the spectral sense) of general linear operators $A$ and $B$, which are densely defined, unbounded, selfadjoint, and monotone in the Hilbert space $L^2(Ω)$, for some bounded and smooth domain $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^3$, and have compact resolvents. Existence, uniqueness, and regularity results have been proved in the quoted paper. Here, in the case of the viscous system, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the solution as the parameter $σ$ appearing in the operator $B^{2σ}$ decreasingly tends to zero. We prove convergence to a phase relaxation problem at the limit, and we also investigate this limiting problem, in which an additional term containing the projection of the phase variable on the kernel of $B$ appears.

Optimal control of a phase field system of Caginalp type with fractional operators

In their recent work `Well-posedness, regularity and asymptotic analyses for a fractional phase field system' (Asymptot. Anal. 114 (2019), 93-128; see also the preprint arXiv:1806.04625), two of the present authors have studied phase field systems of Caginalp type, which model nonconserved, nonisothermal phase transitions and in which the occurring diffusional operators are given by fractional versions in the spectral sense of unbounded, monotone, selfadjoint, linear operators having compact resolvents. In this paper, we complement this analysis by investigating distributed optimal control problems for such systems. It is shown that the associated control-to-state operator is Fréchet differentiable between suitable Banach spaces, and meaningful first-order necessary optimality conditions are derived in terms of a variational inequality and the associated adjoint state variables.

Optimal control of cytotoxic and antiangiogenic therapies on prostate cancer growth

Prostate cancer can be lethal in advanced stages, for which chemotherapy may become the only viable therapeutic option. While there is no clear clinical management strategy fitting all patients, cytotoxic chemotherapy with docetaxel is currently regarded as the gold standard. However, tumors may regain activity after treatment conclusion and become resistant to docetaxel. This situation calls for new delivery strategies and drug compounds enabling an improved therapeutic outcome. Combination of docetaxel with antiangiogenic therapy has been considered a promising strategy. Bevacizumab is the most common antiangiogenic drug, but clinical studies have not revealed a clear benefit from its combination with docetaxel. Here, we capitalize on our prior work on mathematical modeling of prostate cancer growth subjected to combined cytotoxic and antiangiogenic therapies, and propose an optimal control framework to robustly compute the drug-independent cytotoxic and antiangiogenic effects enabling an optimal therapeutic control of tumor dynamics. We describe the formulation of the optimal control problem, for which we prove the existence of at least a solution and determine the necessary first order optimality conditions. We then present numerical algorithms based on isogeometric analysis to run a preliminary simulation study over a single cycle of combined therapy. Our results suggest that only cytotoxic chemotherapy is required to optimize therapeutic performance and we show that our framework can produce superior solutions to combined therapy with docetaxel and bevacizumab. We also illustrate how the optimal drug-naïve cytotoxic effects computed in these simulations may be successfully leveraged to guide drug production and delivery strategies by running a nonlinear least-square fit of protocols involving docetaxel and a new design drug.

Solvability and sliding mode control for the viscous Cahn-Hilliard system with a possibly singular potential

In the present contribution we study a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system where a further leading term in the expression for the chemical potential $ μ$ is present. This term consists of a subdifferential operator $S$ in $L^2(Ω)$ (where $Ω$ is the domain where the evolution takes place) acting on the difference of the phase variable $φ$ and a given state $φ^* $, which is prescribed and may depend on space and time. We prove existence and continuous dependence results in case of both homogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the chemical potential $μ$. Next, by assuming that $S=ρ\,$sign, a multiple of the sign operator, and for smoother data, we first show regularity results. Then, in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions for $μ$ and under suitable conditions on $ρ$ and $Ω$, we also prove the sliding mode property, that is, that $φ$ is forced to join the evolution of $φ^* $ in some time $T^*$ lower than the given final time $T$. We point out that all our results hold true for a very general and possibly singular multi-well potential acting on $φ$.

Vanishing diffusion in a dynamic boundary condition for the Cahn-Hilliard equation

The initial boundary value problem for a Cahn-Hilliard system subject to a dynamic boundary condition of Allen-Cahn type is treated. The vanishing of the surface diffusion on the dynamic boundary condition is the point of emphasis. By the asymptotic analysis as the diffusion coefficient tends to 0, one can expect that the solutions of the surface diffusion problem converge to the solution of the problem without the surface diffusion. This is actually the case, but the solution of the limiting problem naturally looses some regularity. Indeed, the system we investigate is rather complicate due to the presence of nonlinear terms including general maximal monotone graphs both in the bulk and on the boundary. The two graphs are related each to the other by a growth condition, with the boundary graph that dominates the other one. In general, at the asymptotic limit a weaker form of the boundary condition is obtained, but in the case when the two graphs exhibit the same growth the boundary condition still holds almost everywhere.

Boundary control problem and optimality conditions for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper is concerned with a boundary control problem for the Cahn--Hilliard equation coupled with dynamic boundary conditions. In order to handle the control problem, we restrict our analysis to the case of regular potentials defined on the whole real line, assuming the boundary potential to be dominant. The existence of optimal control, the Fréchet differentiability of the control-to-state operator between appropriate Banach spaces, and the first-order necessary conditions for optimality are addressed. In particular, the necessary condition for optimality is characterized by a variational inequality involving the adjoint variables.

Sliding mode control for a generalization of the Caginalp phase-field system

In the present paper, we present and solve the sliding mode control (SMC) problem for a second-order generalization of the Caginalp phase-field system. This generalization, inspired by the theories developed by Green and Naghdi on one side, and Podio-Guidugli on the other, deals with the concept of thermal displacement, i.e., a primitive with respect to the time of the temperature. Two control laws are considered: the former forces the solution to reach a sliding manifold described by a linear constraint between the temperature and the phase variable; the latter forces the phase variable to reach a prescribed distribution $φ^*$. We prove existence, uniqueness as well as continuous dependence of the solutions for both problems; two regularity results are also given. We also prove that, under suitable conditions, the solutions reach the sliding manifold within finite time.

A class of quasi-linear Allen-Cahn type equations with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we consider a class of coupled systems of PDEs, denoted by (ACE)$_{\varepsilon}$ for $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $. For each $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $, the system (ACE)$_{\varepsilon}$ consists of an Allen-Cahn type equation in a bounded spacial domain $ Ω$, and another Allen-Cahn type equation on the smooth boundary $ Γ:= \partial Ω$, and besides, these coupled equations are transmitted via the dynamic boundary conditions. In particular, the equation in $ Ω$ is derived from the non-smooth energy proposed by Visintin in his monography "Models of phase transitions": hence, the diffusion in $ Ω$ is provided by a quasilinear form with singularity. The objective of this paper is to build a mathematical method to obtain meaningful $ L^2 $-based solutions to our systems, and to see some robustness of (ACE)$_\varepsilon$ with respect to $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $. On this basis, we will prove two Main Theorems 1 and 2, which will be concerned with the well-posedness of (ACE)$_\varepsilon$ for each $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $, and the continuous dependence of solutions to (ACE)$_\varepsilon$ for the variations of $ \varepsilon \geq 0 $, respectively.

Constrained evolution for a quasilinear parabolic equation

In the present contribution, a feedback control law is studied for a quasilinear parabolic equation. First, we prove the well-posedness and some regularity results for the Cauchy-Neumann problem for this equation, modified by adding an extra term which is a multiple of the subdifferential of the distance function from a closed convex set of the space of square-integrable functions. Then, we consider convex sets of obstacle or double-obstacle type and prove rigorously the following property: if the factor in front of the feedback control is sufficiently large, then the solution reaches the convex set within a finite time and then moves inside it.

Distributed optimal control of a nonstandard nonlocal phase field system

We investigate a distributed optimal control problem for a nonlocal phase field model of viscous Cahn-Hilliard type. The model constitutes a nonlocal version of a model for two-species phase segregation on an atomic lattice under the presence of diffusion that has been studied in a series of papers by P. Podio-Guidugli and the present authors. The model consists of a highly nonlinear parabolic equation coupled to an ordinary differential equation. The latter equation contains both nonlocal and singular terms that render the analysis difficult. Standard arguments of optimal control theory do not apply directly, although the control constraints and the cost functional are of standard type. We show that the problem admits a solution, and we derive the first-order necessary conditions of optimality.

Distributed optimal control of a nonstandard nonlocal phase field system with double obstacle potential

This paper is concerned with a distributed optimal control problem for a nonlocal phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type, which is a nonlocal version of a model for two-species phase segregation on an atomic lattice under the presence of diffusion. The local model has been investigated in a series of papers by P. Podio-Guidugli and the present authors; the nonlocal model studied here consists of a highly nonlinear parabolic equation coupled to an ordinary differential inclusion of subdifferential type. The inclusion originates from a free energy containing the indicator function of the interval in which the order parameter of the phase segregation attains its values. It also contains a nonlocal term modeling long-range interactions. Due to the strong nonlinear couplings between the state variables (which even involve products with time derivatives), the analysis of the state system is difficult. In addition, the presence of the differential inclusion is the reason that standard arguments of optimal control theory cannot be applied to guarantee the existence of Lagrange multipliers. In this paper, we employ recent results proved for smooth logarithmic potentials and perform a so-called `deep quench' approximation to establish existence and first-order necessary optimality conditions for the nonsmooth case of the double obstacle potential.

Feedback stabilization of the Cahn-Hilliard type system for phase separation

This article is concerned with the internal feedback stabilization of the phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type, modeling the phase separation in a binary mixture. Under suitable assumptions on an arbitrarily fixed stationary solution, we construct via spectral separation arguments a feedback controller having the support in an arbitrary open subset of the space domain, such that the closed loop nonlinear system exponentially reach the prescribed stationary solution. This feedback controller has a finite dimensional structure in the state space of solutions. In particular, every constant stationary solution is admissible.

Global existence for a nonstandard viscous Cahn-Hilliard system with dynamic boundary condition

In this paper, we study a model for phase segregation taking place in a spatial domain that was introduced by Podio-Guidugli in Ric. Mat. 55 (2006), pp. 105-118. The model consists of a strongly coupled system of nonlinear parabolic differential equations, in which products between the unknown functions and their time derivatives occur that are diffcult to handle analytically. In contrast to the existing literature about this PDE system, we consider here a dynamic boundary condition involving the Laplace-Beltrami operator for the order parameter. This boundary condition models an additional nonconserving phase transition occurring on the surface of the domain. Different well-posedness results are shown, depending on the smoothness properties of the involved bulk and surface free energies.

A boundary control problem for a possibly singular phase field system with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper deals with an optimal control problem related to a phase field system of Caginalp type with a dynamic boundary condition for the temperature. The control placed in the dynamic boundary condition acts on a part of the boundary. The analysis carried out in this paper proves the existence of an optimal control for a general class of potentials, possibly singular. The study includes potentials for which the derivatives may not exist, these being replaced by well-defined subdifferentials. Under some stronger assumptions on the structure parameters and on the potentials (namely for the regular and the logarithmic case having single-valued derivatives), the first order necessary optimality conditions are derived and expressed in terms of the boundary trace of the first adjoint variable.

A non-smooth regularization of a forward-backward parabolic equation

In this paper we introduce a model describing diffusion of species by a suitable regularization of a "forward-backward" parabolic equation. In particular, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as continuous dependence on data, for a system of partial differential equations and inclusion, which may be interpreted, e.g., as evolving equation for physical quantities such as concentration and chemical potential. The model deals with a constant mobility and it is recovered from a possibly non-convex free-energy density. In particular, we render a general viscous regularization via a maximal monotone graph acting on the time derivative of the concentration and presenting a strong coerciveness property.

Asymptotic analyses and error estimates for a Cahn-Hilliard type phase field system modelling tumor growth

This paper is concerned with a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type that is related to a tumor growth model and consists of three equations in terms of the variables order parameter, chemical potential and nutrient concentration. This system has been investigated in the recent contributions arXiv:1401.5943 [math.AP] and arXiv:1501.07057 [math.AP] from the viewpoint of well-posedness, long time behavior and asymptotic convergence as two positive viscosity coefficients tend to zero at the same time. Here, we continue the analysis performed in arXiv:1501.07057 [math.AP] by showing two independent sets of results as just one of the coefficients tends to zero, the other remaining fixed. We prove convergence results, uniqueness of solutions to the two resulting limit problems, and suitable error estimates.

Nonlinear diffusion equations as asymptotic limits of Cahn-Hilliard systems

An asymptotic limit of a class of Cahn-Hilliard systems is investigated to obtain a general nonlinear diffusion equation. The target diffusion equation may reproduce a number of well-known model equations: Stefan problem, porous media equation, Hele-Shaw profile, nonlinear diffusion of singular logarithmic type, nonlinear diffusion of Penrose-Fife type, fast diffusion equation and so on. Namely, by setting the suitable potential of the Cahn-Hilliard systems, all of these problems can be obtained as limits of the Cahn-Hilliard related problems. Convergence results and error estimates are proved.

On an application of Tikhonov's fixed point theorem to a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard type system modeling phase separation

This paper investigates a nonlocal version of a model for phase separation on an atomic lattice that was introduced by P. Podio-Guidugli in Ric. Mat. 55 (2006) 105-118. The model consists of an initial-boundary value problem for a nonlinearly coupled system of two partial differential equations governing the evolution of an order parameter and the chemical potential. Singular contributions to the local free energy in the form of logarithmic or double-obstacle potentials are admitted. In contrast to the local model, which was studied by P. Podio-Guidugli and the present authors in a series of recent publications, in the nonlocal case the equation governing the evolution of the order parameter contains in place of the Laplacian a nonlocal expression that originates from nonlocal contributions to the free energy and accounts for possible long-range interactions between the atoms. It is shown that just as in the local case the model equations are well posed, where the technique of proving existence is entirely different: it is based on an application of Tikhonov's fixed point theorem in a rather unusual separable and reflexive Banach space.

Regularity of the solution to a nonstandard system of phase field equations

A nonstandard system of differential equations describing two-species phase segregation is considered. This system naturally arises in the asymptotic analysis recently done by Colli, Gilardi, Krejci and Sprekels as the diffusion coefficient in the equation governing the evolution of the order parameter tends to zero. In particular, a well-posedness result is proved for the limit system. This paper deals with the above limit problem in a less general but still very significant framework and provides a very simple proof of further regularity for the solution. As a byproduct, a simple uniqueness proof is given as well.

Vanishing viscosities and error estimate for a Cahn-Hilliard type phase field system related to tumor growth

In this paper we perform an asymptotic analysis for two different vanishing viscosity coefficients occurring in a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type that was recently introduced in order to approximate a tumor growth model. In particular, we extend some recent results obtained in the preprint arXiv:1401.5943, letting the two positive viscosity parameters tend to zero independently from each other and weakening the conditions on the initial data in such a way as to maintain the nonlinearities of the PDE system as general as possible. Finally, under proper growth conditions on the interaction potential, we prove an error estimate leading also to the uniqueness result for the limit system.

Cahn-Hilliard equation with dynamic boundary conditions and mass constraint on the boundary

The well-known Cahn-Hilliard equation entails mass conservation if a suitable boundary condition is prescribed. In the case when the equation is also coupled with a dynamic boundary condition, including the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the boundary, the total mass on the inside of the domain and its trace on the boundary should be conserved. The new issue of this paper is the setting of a mass constraint on the boundary. The effect of this additional constraint is the appearance of a Lagrange multiplier; in fact, two Lagrange multipliers arise, one for the bulk, the other for the boundary. The well-posedness of the resulting Cahn-Hilliard system with dynamic boundary condition and mass constraint on the boundary is obtained. The theory of evolution equations governed by subdifferentials is exploited and a complete characterization of the solution is given.

Optimal boundary control of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system with dynamic boundary condition and double obstacle potentials

In this paper, we investigate optimal boundary control problems for Cahn-Hilliard variational inequalities with a dynamic boundary condition involving double obstacle potentials and the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, and box constraints for the controls are prescribed. We prove existence of optimal controls and derive first-order necessary conditions of optimality. The general strategy, which follows the lines of the recent approach by Colli, Farshbaf-Shaker, Sprekels (see the preprint arXiv:1308.5617) to the (simpler) Allen-Cahn case, is the following: we use the results that were recently established by Colli, Gilardi, Sprekels in the preprint arXiv:1407.3916 [math.AP] for the case of (differentiable) logarithmic potentials and perform a so-called "deep quench limit". Using compactness and monotonicity arguments, it is shown that this strategy leads to the desired first-order necessary optimality conditions for the case of (non-differentiable) double obstacle potentials.

Optimal control for a phase field system with a possibly singular potential

In this paper we study a distributed control problem for a phase field system of Caginalp type with logarithmic potential. The main aim of this work would be to force the location of the diffuse interface to be as close as possible to a prescribed set. However, due to the discontinuous character of the cost functional, we have to approximate it by a regular one and, in this case, we solve the associated control problem and derive the related first order necessary optimality conditions.

Optimal control of an Allen-Cahn equation with singular potentials and dynamic boundary condition

In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems for Allen-Cahn equations with singular nonlinearities and a dynamic boundary condition involving singular nonlinearities and the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The approach covers both the cases of distributed controls and of boundary controls. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, and box constraints for the controls are prescribed. Parabolic problems with nonlinear dynamic boundary conditions involving the Laplace-Beltrami operation have recently drawn increasing attention due to their importance in applications, while their optimal control was apparently never studied before. In this paper, we first extend known well-posedness and regularity results for the state equation and then show the existence of optimal controls and that the control-to-state mapping is twice continuously Fréchet differentiable between appropriate function spaces. Based on these results, we establish the first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality and the adjoint state equation, and we prove second-order sufficient optimality conditions.

Sharp interface control in a Penrose-Fife model

In this paper we study a singular control problem for a system of PDEs describing a phase-field model of Penrose-Fife type. The main novelty of this contribution consists in the idea of forcing a sharp interface separation between the states of the system by using heat sources distributed in the domain and at the boundary. We approximate the singular cost functional with a regular one, which is based on the Legendre-Fenchel relations. Then, we obtain a regularized control problem for which we compute the first order optimality conditions using an adapted penalization technique. The proof of some convergence results and the passage to the limit in these optimality conditions lead to the characterization of the desired optimal controller.

The Allen-Cahn equation with dynamic boundary conditions and mass constraints

The Allen-Cahn equation, coupled with dynamic boundary conditions, has recently received a good deal of attention. The new issue of this paper is the setting of a rather general mass constraint which may involve either the solution inside the domain or its trace on the boundary. The system of nonlinear partial differential equations can be formulated as variational inequality. The presence of the constraint in the evolution process leads to additional terms in the equation and the boundary condition containing a suitable Lagrange multiplier. A well-posedness result is proved for the related initial value problem.

A continuous dependence result for a nonstandard system of phase field equations

The present note deals with a nonstandard systems of differential equations describing a two-species phase segregation. This system naturally arises in the asymptotic analysis carried out recently by the same authors, as the diffusion coefficient in the equation governing the evolution of the order parameter tends to zero. In particular, an existence result has been proved for the limit system in a very general framework. On the contrary, uniqueness was shown by assuming a constant mobility coefficient. Here, we generalize this result and prove a continuous dependence property in the case that the mobility coefficient suitably depends on the chemical potential.

A deep quench approach to the optimal control of an Allen-Cahn equation with dynamic boundary condition and double obstacle potentials

In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems for Allen-Cahn variational inequalities with a dynamic boundary condition involving double obstacle potentials and the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The approach covers both the cases of distributed controls and of boundary controls. The cost functional is of standard tracking type, and box constraints for the controls are prescribed. We prove existence of optimal controls and derive first-order necessary conditions of optimality. The general strategy is the following: we use the results that were recently established by two of the authors for the case of (differentiable) logarithmic potentials and perform a so-called "deep quench limit". Using compactness and monotonicity arguments, it is shown that this strategy leads to the desired first-order necessary optimality conditions for the case of (non-differentiable) double obstacle potentials.

Existence of solutions for a mathematical model related to solid-solid phase transitions in shape memory alloys

We consider a strongly nonlinear PDE system describing solid-solid phase transitions in shape memory alloys. The system accounts for the evolution of an order parameter (related to different symmetries of the crystal lattice in the phase configurations), of the stress (and the displacement), and of the absolute temperature. The resulting equations present several technical difficulties to be tackled: in particular, we emphasize the presence of nonlinear coupling terms, higher order dissipative contributions, possibly multivalued operators. As for the evolution of temperature, a highly nonlinear parabolic equation has to be solved for a right hand side that is controlled only in L^1. We prove the existence of a solution for a regularized version, by use of a time discretization technique. Then, we perform suitable a priori estimates which allow us pass to the limit and find a weak global-in-time solution to the system.

A phase-field approximation of the Willmore flow with volume and area constraints

The well-posedness of a phase-field approximation to the Willmore flow with area and volume constraints is established when the functional approximating the area has no critical point satisfying the two constraints. The existence proof relies on the underlying gradient flow structure of the problem: the time discrete approximation is solved by a variational minimization principle. The main difficulty stems from the nonlinearity of the area constraint.

A vanishing diffusion limit in a nonstandard system of phase field equations

We are concerned with a nonstandard phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type. The model, which was introduced by Podio-Guidugli (Ric. Mat. 2006), describes two-species phase segregation and consists of a system of two highly nonlinearly coupled PDEs. It has been recently investigated by Colli, Gilardi, Podio-Guidugli, and Sprekels in a series of papers: see, in particular, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 2011 and Boll. Unione Mat. Ital. 2012. In the latter contribution, the authors can treat the very general case in which the diffusivity coefficient of the parabolic PDE is allowed to depend nonlinearly on both variables. In the same framework, this paper investigates the asymptotic limit of the solutions to the initial-boundary value problems as the diffusion coefficient in the equation governing the evolution of the order parameter tends to zero. We prove that such a limit actually exists and solves the limit problem, which couples a nonlinear PDE of parabolic type with an ODE accounting for the phase dynamics. In the case of a constant diffusivity, we are able to show uniqueness and to improve the regularity of the solution.

Analysis and optimal boundary control of a nonstandard system of phase field equations

We investigate a nonstandard phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type. The model describes two-species phase segregation and consists of a system of two highly nonlinearly coupled PDEs. It has been studied recently in the papers arXiv:1103.4585 and arXiv:1109.3303 for the case of homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper, we investigate the case that the boundary condition for one of the unknowns of the system is of third kind and nonhomogeneous. For the resulting system, we show well-posedness, and we study optimal boundary control problems. Existence of optimal controls is shown, and the first-order necessary optimality conditions are derived. Owing to the strong nonlinear couplings in the PDE system, standard arguments of optimal control theory do not apply directly, although the control constraints and the cost functional will be of standard type.

Convergence properties for a generalization of the Caginalp phase field system

We are concerned with a phase field system consisting of two partial differential equations in terms of the variables thermal displacement, that is basically the time integration of temperature, and phase parameter. The system is a generalization of the well-known Caginalp model for phase transitions, when including a diffusive term for the thermal displacement in the balance equation and when dealing with an arbitrary maximal monotone graph, along with a smooth anti-monotone function, in the phase equation. A Cauchy-Neumann problem has been studied for such a system in arXiv:1107.3950v2 [math.AP], by proving well-posedness and regularity results, as well as convergence of the problem as the coefficient of the diffusive term for the thermal displacement tends to zero. The aim of this contribution is rather to investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the problem as the coefficient in front of the Laplacian of the temperature goes to 0: this analysis is motivated by the types III and II cases in the thermomechanical theory of Green and Naghdi. Under minimal assumptions on the data of the problems, we show a convergence result. Then, with the help of uniform regularity estimates, we discuss the rate of convergence for the difference of the solutions in suitable norms.

Global existence and uniqueness for a singular/degenerate Cahn-Hilliard system with viscosity

Existence and uniqueness are investigated for a nonlinear diffusion problem of phase-field type, consisting of a parabolic system of two partial differential equations, complemented by Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions and initial conditions. This system aims to model two-species phase segregation on an atomic lattice; in the balance equations of microforces and microenergy, the two unknowns are the order parameter and the chemical potential. A simpler version of the same system has recently been discussed in arXiv:1103.4585v1. In this paper, a fairly more general phase-field equation is coupled with a genuinely nonlinear diffusion equation. The existence of a global-in-time solution is proved with the help of suitable a priori estimates. In the case of a constant atom mobility, a new and rather unusual uniqueness proof is given, based on a suitable combination of variables.

Global existence for a strongly coupled Cahn-Hilliard system with viscosity

An existence result is proved for a nonlinear diffusion problem of phase-field type, consisting of a parabolic system of two partial differential equations, complemented by Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions and initial conditions. This system is meant to model two-species phase segregation on an atomic lattice under the presence of diffusion. A similar system has been recently introduced and analyzed in the paper arXiv:1103.4585 . Both systems conform to the general theory developed in [P. Podio-Guidugli, Models of phase segregation and diffusion of atomic species on a lattice, Ric. Mat. 55 (2006) 105-118]: two parabolic PDEs, interpreted as balances of microforces and microenergy, are to be solved for the order parameter and the chemical potential. In the system studied in this note, a phase-field equation fairly more general than in arXiv:1103.4585 is coupled with a highly nonlinear diffusion equation for the chemical potential, in which the conductivity coefficient is allowed to depend nonlinearly on both variables.

Global solution to the Allen-Cahn equation with singular potentials and dynamic boundary conditions

We prove well-posedness results for the solution to an initial and boundary-value problem for an Allen-Cahn type equation describing the phenomenon of phase transitions for a material contained in a bounded and regular domain. The dynamic boundary conditions for the order parameter have been recently proposed by some physicists to account for interactions with the walls. We show our results using suitable regularizations of the nonlinearities of the problem and performing some a priori estimates which allow us to pass to the limit thanks to compactness and monotonicity arguments.

A nonlocal quasilinear multi-phase system with nonconstant specific heat and heat conductivity

In this paper, we prove the existence and global boundedness from above for a solution to an integrodifferential model for nonisothermal multi-phase transitions under nonhomogeneous third type boundary conditions. The system couples a quasilinear internal energy balance ruling the evolution of the absolute temperature with a vectorial integro-differential inclusion governing the (vectorial) phase-parameter dynamics. The specific heat and the heat conductivity are allowed to depend both on the order parameter and on the absolute temperature of the system, and the convex component of the free energy may or may not be singular. Uniqueness and continuous data dependence are also proved under additional assumptions.

An asymptotic analysis for a nonstandard Cahn-Hilliard system with viscosity

This paper is concerned with a diffusion model of phase-field type, consisting of a parabolic system of two partial differential equations, interpreted as balances of microforces and microenergy, for two unknowns: the problem's order parameter and the chemical potential; each equation includes a viscosity term and the field equations are complemented by Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions and suitable initial conditions. In the recent paper arXiv:1103.4585v1 [math.AP] we proved that this problem is well posed and investigated the long-time behavior of its solutions. Here we discuss the asymptotic limit of the system as the viscosity coefficient of the order parameter equation tends to 0. We prove convergence of solutions to the corresponding solutions for the limit problem, whose long-time behavior we characterize; in the proofs, we employ compactness and monotonicity arguments.

Distributed optimal control of a nonstandard system of phase field equations

We investigate a distributed optimal control problem for a phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type. The model describes two-species phase segregation on an atomic lattice under the presence of diffusion; it has been recently introduced by the same authors in arXiv:1103.4585v1 [math.AP] and consists of a system of two highly nonlinearly coupled PDEs. For this reason, standard arguments of optimal control theory do not apply directly, although the control constraints and the cost functional are of standard type. We show that the problem admits a solution, and we derive the first-order necessary conditions of optimality.

Global existence for a hydrogen storage model with full energy balance

A thermo-mechanical model describing hydrogen storage by use of metal hydrides has been recently proposed in a paper by Bonetti, Frémond and Lexcellent. It describes the formation of hydrides using the phase transition approach. By virtue of the laws of continuum thermo-mechanics, the model leads to a phase transition problem in terms of three state variables: the temperature, the phase parameter representing the fraction of one solid phase, and the pressure, and is derived within a generalization of the principle of virtual powers proposed by Frémond accounting for micro-forces, responsible for the phase transition, in the whole energy balance of the system. Three coupled nonlinear partial differential equations combined with initial and boundary conditions have to be solved. The main difficulty in investigating the resulting system of partial differential equations relies on the presence of the squared time derivative of the order parameter in the energy balance equation. Here, the global existence of a solution to the full problem is proved by exploiting known and sharp estimates on parabolic equations with right hand side in L^1. Some complementary results on stability and steady state solutions are also given.

Global Existence of Weak Solutions to a Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes System

A well-known diffuse interface model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations nonlinearly coupled with a convective Cahn-Hilliard type equation. This system describes the evolution of an incompressible isothermal mixture of binary-fluids and it has been investigated by many authors. Here we consider a variant of this model where the standard Cahn-Hilliard equation is replaced by its nonlocal version. More precisely, the gradient term in the free energy functional is replaced by a spatial convolution operator acting on the order parameter phi, while the potential F may have any polynomial growth. Therefore the coupling with the Navier-Stokes equations is difficult to handle even in two spatial dimensions because of the lack of regularity of phi. We establish the global existence of a weak solution. In the two-dimensional case we also prove that such a solution satisfies the energy identity and a dissipative estimate, provided that F fulfills a suitable coercivity condition.

Solvability and asymptotic analysis of a generalization of the Caginalp phase field system

We study a diffusion model of phase field type, which consists of a system of two partial differential equations involving as variables the thermal displacement, that is basically the time integration of temperature, and the order parameter. Our analysis covers the case of a non-smooth (maximal monotone) graph along with a smooth anti-monotone function in the phase equation. Thus, the system turns out a generalization of the well-known Caginalp phase field model for phase transitions when including a diffusive term for the thermal displacement in the balance equation. Systems of this kind have been extensively studied by Miranville and Quintanilla. We prove existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to the initial-boundary value problem, as well as various regularity results ensuring that the solution is strong and with bounded components. Then we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions as the coefficient of the diffusive term for the thermal displacement tends to 0 and prove convergence to the Caginalp phase field system as well as error estimates for the difference of the solutions.

Well-posedness and long-time behavior for a nonstandard viscous Cahn-Hilliard system

We study a diffusion model of phase field type, consisting of a system of two partial differential equations encoding the balances of microforces and microenergy; the two unknowns are the order parameter and the chemical potential. By a careful development of uniform estimates and the deduction of certain useful boundedness properties, we prove existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time smooth solution to the associated initial/boundary-value problem; moreover, we give a description of the relative omega-limit set.

A temperature-dependent phase segregation problem of the Allen-Cahn type

In this paper we prove a local-in-time existence theorem for an initial-boundary value problem related to a model of temperature-dependent phase segregation that generalizes the standard Allen-Cahn's model. The problem is ruled by a system of two differential equations, one partial the other ordinary, interpreted as balances, respectively, of microforces and of microenergy, complemented by a transcendental condition on the three unknowns, that are: the order parameter entering the standard A-C equation, the chemical potential, and the absolute temperature. The results obtained by the authors in a recent paper and dealing with the isothermal case serve as a starting point for our existence proof, which relies on a fixed-point argument involving the Tychonoff-Schauder theorem.
