On a Steklov spectrum in Electromagnetics

After presenting various concepts and results concerning the classical Steklov eigenproblem, we focus on analogous problems for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in a cavity. In this direction, we discuss recent rigorous results concerning natural Steklov boundary value problems for the curlcurl operator. Moreover, we explicitly compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in the unit ball of the three-dimensional Euclidean space by using classical vector spherical harmonics.

Spectral stability of the $curl curl$ operator via uniform Gaffney inequalities on perturbed electromagnetic cavities

We prove spectral stability results for the $curl curl$ operator subject to electric boundary conditions on a cavity upon boundary perturbations. The cavities are assumed to be sufficiently smooth but we impose weak restrictions on the strength of the perturbations. The methods are of variational type and are based on two main ingredients: the construction of suitable Piola-type transformations between domains and the proof of uniform Gaffney inequalities obtained by means of uniform a priori $H^2$-estimates for the Poisson problem of the Dirichlet Laplacian. The uniform a priori estimates are proved by using the results of V. Maz'ya and T. Shaposhnikova based on Sobolev multipliers. Connections to boundary homogenization problems are also indicated.

Spectral stability for a class of fourth order Steklov problems under domain perturbations

We study the spectral stability of two fourth order Steklov problems upon domain perturbation. One of the two problems is the classical DBS - Dirichlet Biharmonic Steklov - problem, the other one is a variant. Under a comparatively weak condition on the convergence of the domains, we prove the stability of the resolvent operators for both problems, which implies the stability of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The stability estimates for the eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the strong $H^2$-norms. The analysis is carried out without assuming that the domains are star-shaped. Our condition turns out to be sharp at least for the variant of the DBS problem. In the case of the DBS problem, we prove stability of a suitable Dirichlet-to-Neumann type map under very weak conditions on the convergence of the domains and we formulate an open problem. As bypass product of our analysis, we provide some stability and instability results for Navier and Navier-type boundary value problems for the biharmonic operator.

Spectral stability of the Steklov problem

This paper investigates the stability properties of the spectrum of the classical Steklov problem under domain perturbation. We find conditions which guarantee the spectral stability and we show their optimality. We emphasize the fact that our spectral stability results also involve convergence of eigenfunctions in a suitable sense according with the definition of connecting system by \cite{Vainikko}. The convergence of eigenfunctions can be expressed in terms of the $H^1$ strong convergence. The arguments used in our proofs are based on an appropriate definition of compact convergence of the resolvent operators associated with the Steklov problems on varying domains. In order to show the optimality of our conditions we present alternative assumptions which give rise to a degeneration of the spectrum or to a discontinuity of the spectrum in the sense that the eigenvalues converge to the eigenvalues of a limit problem which does not coincide with the Steklov problem on the limiting domain.

Eigenvalues of the Finsler $p$-Laplacian on varying domains

We study the dependence of the first eigenvalue of the Finsler $p$-Laplacian and the corresponding eigenfunctions upon perturbation of the domain and we generalize a few results known for the standard $p$-Laplacian. In particular, we prove a Frechét differentiability result for the eigenvalues, we compute the corresponding Hadamard formulas and we prove a continuity result for the eigenfunctions. Finally, we briefly discuss a well-known overdetermined problem and we show how to deduce the Rellich-Pohozaev identity for the Finsler $p$-Laplacian from the Hadamard formula.

On an interior Calderón operator and a related Steklov eigenproblem for Maxwell's equations

We discuss a Steklov-type problem for Maxwell's equations which is related to an interior Calderón operator and an appropriate Dirichlet-to-Neumann type map. The corresponding Neumann-to-Dirichlet map turns out to be compact and this provides a Fourier basis of Steklov eigenfunctions for the associated energy spaces. With an approach similar to that developed by Auchmuty for the Laplace operator, we provide natural spectral representations for the appropriate trace spaces, for the Calderón operator itself and for the solutions of the corresponding boundary value problems subject to electric or magnetic boundary conditions on a cavity.

Remarks on Sobolev-Morrey-Campanato spaces defined on $C^{0,γ}$ domains

We discuss a few old results concerning embedding theorems for Campanato and Sobolev-Morrey spaces adapting the formulations to the case of domains of class $C^{0,γ}$, and we present more recent results concerning the extension of functions from Sobolev-Morrey spaces defined on those domains. As a corollary of the extension theorem we obtain an embedding theorem for Sobolev-Morrey spaces on arbitrary $C^{0,γ}$ domains.

Shape perturbation of Grushin eigenvalues

We consider the spectral problem for the Grushin Laplacian subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$. We prove that the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues depend real analytically upon domain perturbations and we prove an Hadamard-type formula for their shape differential. In the case of perturbations depending on a single scalar parameter, we prove a Rellich-Nagy-type theorem which describes the bifurcation phenomenon of multiple eigenvalues. As corollaries, we characterize the critical shapes under isovolumetric and isoperimetric perturbations in terms of overdetermined problems and we deduce a new proof of the Rellich-Pohozaev identity for the Grushin eigenvalues.

Shape sensitivity analysis for electromagnetic cavities

We study the dependence of the eigenvalues of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in a cavity upon variation of its shape. The analysis concerns all eigenvalues both simple and multiple. We provide analyticity results for the dependence of the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues splitting a multiple eigenvalue, as well as a Rellich-Nagy-type result describing the corresponding bifurcation phenomenon. We also address an isoperimetric problem and characterize the critical cavities for the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues subject to isovolumetric or isoperimetric domain perturbations and prove that balls are critical. We include known formulas for the eigenpairs in a ball and calculate the first one.

Neumann to Steklov eigenvalues: asymptotic and monotonicity results

We consider the Steklov eigenvalues of the Laplace operator as limiting Neumann eigenvalues in a problem of mass concentration at the boundary of a ball. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of the Neumann eigenvalues and find explicit formulas for their derivatives at the limiting problem. We deduce that the Neumann eigenvalues have a monotone behavior in the limit and that Steklov eigenvalues locally minimize the Neumann eigenvalues.

Monotonicity, continuity and differentiability results for the $L^p$ Hardy constant

We consider the $L^p$ Hardy inequality involving the distance to the boundary for a domain in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. We study the dependence on $p$ of the corresponding best constant and we prove monotonicity, continuity and differentiability results. The focus is on non-convex domains in which case such constant is in general not explicitly known.

A maximum principle in spectral optimization problems for elliptic operators subject to mass density perturbations

We consider eigenvalue problems for general elliptic operators of arbitrary order subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on open subsets of the euclidean N-dimensional space. We prove stability results for the dependence of the eigenvalues upon variation of the mass density and we prove a maximum principle for extremum problems related to mass density perturbations which preserve the total mass.

On a classical spectral optimization problem in linear elasticity

We consider a classical shape optimization problem for the eigenvalues of elliptic operators with homogeneous boundary conditions on domains in the $N$-dimensional Euclidean space. We survey recent results concerning the analytic dependence of the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues upon domain perturbation and the role of balls as critical points of such functions subject to volume constraint. Our discussion concerns Dirichlet and buckling-type problems for polyharmonic operators, the Neumann and the intermediate problems for the biharmonic operator, the Lamé and the Reissner-Mindlin systems.

Shape sensitivity analysis of the eigenvalues of the Reissner-Mindlin system

We consider the eigenvalue problem for the Reissner-Mindlin system arising in the study of the free vibration modes of an elastic clamped plate. We provide quantitative estimates for the variation of the eigenvalues upon variation of the shape of the plate. We also prove analyticity results and establish Hadamard-type formulas. Finally, we address the problem of minimization of the eigenvalues in the case of isovolumetric domain perturbations. In the spirit of the Rayleigh conjecture for the biharmonic operator, we prove that balls are critical points with volume constraint for all simple eigenvalues and the elementary symmetric functions of multiple eigenvalues.

Viewing the Steklov eigenvalues of the Laplace operator as critical Neumann eigenvalues

We consider the Steklov eigenvalues of the Laplace operator as limiting Neumann eigenvalues in a problem of boundary mass concentration. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of the Neumann eigenvalues in a ball and we deduce that the Steklov eigenvalues minimize the Neumann eigenvalues. Moreover, we study the dependence of the eigenvalues of the Steklov problem upon perturbation of the mass density and show that the Steklov eigenvalues violates a maximum principle in spectral optimization problems.

Shape sensitivity analysis of the Hardy constant

We consider the Hardy constant associated with a domain in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space and we study its variation upon perturbation of the domain. We prove a Fréchet differentiability result and establish a Hadamard-type formula for the corresponding derivatives. We also prove a stability result for the minimizers of the Hardy quotient. Finally, we prove stability estimates in terms of the Lebesgue measure of the symmetric difference of domains.

Eigenvalues of poly-harmonic operators on variable domains

We consider a class of eigenvalue problems for poly-harmonic operators, including Dirichlet and buckling-type eigenvalue problems. We prove an analyticity result for the dependence of the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues upon domain perturbations and compute Hadamard-type formulas for the Frechét differentials. We also consider isovolumetric domain perturbations and characterize the corresponding critical domains for the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues. Finally, we prove that balls are critical domains.

Spectral stability of higher order uniformly elliptic operators

We prove estimates for the variation of the eigenvalues of uniformly elliptic operators with homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions upon variation of the open set on which an operator is defined. We consider operators of arbitrary even order and open sets admitting arbitrary strong degeneration. The main estimate is expressed via a natural and easily computable distance between open sets with continuous boundaries. Another estimate is obtained via the lower Hausdorff-Pompeiu deviation of the boundaries, which in general may be much smaller than the usual Hausdorff-Pompeiu distance. Finally, in the case of diffeomorphic open sets we obtain an estimate even without the assumption of continuity of the boundaries.

Sharp spectral stability estimates via the Lebesgue measure of domains for higher order elliptic operators

We prove sharp stability estimates for the variation of the eigenvalues of non-negative self-adjoint elliptic operators of arbitrary even order upon variation of the open sets on which they are defined. These estimates are expressed in terms of the Lebesgue measure of the symmetric difference of the open sets. Both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are considered.

preprint2011arXiv

Spectral stability estimates for elliptic operators subject to domain transformations with non-uniformly bounded gradients

We consider uniformly elliptic operators with Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions on a domain $Ω$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^N$. We consider deformations $ϕ(Ω)$ of $Ω$ obtained by means of a locally Lipschitz homeomorphism $ϕ$ and we estimate the variation of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues upon variation of $ϕ$. We prove general stability estimates without using uniform upper bounds for the gradients of the maps $ϕ$. As an application, we obtain estimates on the rate of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions when a domain with an outward cusp is approximated by a sequence of Lipschitz domains.

Steklov-type eigenvalues associated with best Sobolev trace constants: domain perturbation and overdetermined systems

We consider a variant of the classic Steklov eigenvalue problem, which arises in the study of the best trace constant for functions in Sobolev space. We prove that the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues depend real-analytically upon variation of the underlying domain and we compute the corresponding Hadamard-type formulas for the shape derivatives. We also consider isovolumetric and isoperimetric domain perturbations and we characterize the corresponding critical domains in terms of appropriate overdetermined systems. Finally, we prove that balls are critical domains for the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues subject to volume or perimeter constraint.

On the sharpness of a certain spectral stability estimate for the Dirichlet Laplacian

We consider a spectral stability estimate by Burenkov and Lamberti concerning the variation of the eigenvalues of second order uniformly elliptic operators on variable open sets in the N-dimensional euclidean space, and we prove that it is sharp for any dimension N. This is done by studying the eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet Laplacian on special open sets inscribed in suitable spherical cones.
