Strain engineering of the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic moment in NdFeO3 epitaxial thin films

Strain engineering is a powerful mean for tuning the various functionalities of ABO3 perovskite oxide thin films. Rare-earth orthoferrite RFeO3 materials such as NdFeO3 (NFO) are of prime interest because of their intriguing magnetic properties as well as their technological potential applications especially as thin films. Here, using a large set of complementary and advanced techniques, we show that NFO epitaxial thin films, successfully grown by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-SrTiO3, show a strong magnetic anisotropy below a critical thickness tc of 54 nm, associated with the occurrence of structural modifications related to symmetry and domain pattern changes. By varying the tensile misfit strain through the decrease of film thickness below tc, the amplitudes of in and out-of-plane magnetization can be continuously tuned while their ratio stays constant. Furthermore, different low-temperature magnetic behaviors are evidenced for strained and relaxed films, suggesting that the strain-induced structural state impacts the magnetic phase stability.

Large-scale epitaxy of two-dimensional van der Waals room-temperature ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2

In recent years, two-dimensional van der Waals materials have emerged as an important platform for the observation of long-range ferromagnetic order in atomically thin layers. Although heterostructures of such materials can be conceived to harness and couple a wide range of magneto-optical and magneto-electrical properties, technologically relevant applications require Curie temperatures at or above room-temperature and the ability to grow films over large areas. Here we demonstrate the large-area growth of single-crystal ultrathin films of stoichiometric Fe5GeTe2 on an insulating substrate using molecular beam epitaxy. Magnetic measurements show the persistence of soft ferromagnetism up to room temperature, with a Curie temperature of 293 K, and a weak out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Surface, chemical, and structural characterizations confirm the layer-by-layer growth, 5:1:2 Fe:Ge:Te stoichiometric elementary composition, and single crystalline character of the films.

Possible multi-orbital ground state in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$

The crystal-field ground state wave function of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated with linear polarized $M$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy from 250mK to 250K, thus covering the superconducting ($T_{\text{c}}$=0.6K), the Kondo ($T_{\text{K}}$$\approx$20K) as well as the Curie-Weiss regime. The comparison with full-multiplet calculations shows that the temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is well explained with a $Γ_7^{(1)}$ crystal-field ground-state and the thermal population of excited states at around 30meV. The crystal-field scheme does not change throughout the entire temperature range thus making the scenario of orbital switching unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4$f^0$ configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility for a multi-orbital character of the ground state. We estimate from the Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting energies that several percents of the higher lying $Γ_6$ state and $Γ_7^{(2)}$ crystal-field states are mixed into the primarily $Γ_7^{(1)}$ ground state. This estimate is also supported by re-normalized band-structure calculations that uses the experimentally determined crystal-field scheme.

Europium Underneath Graphene on Ir(111): Intercalation Mechanism, Magnetism, and Band Structure

The intercalation of Eu underneath Gr on Ir(111) is comprehensively investigated by microscopic, magnetic, and spectroscopic measurements, as well as by density functional theory. Depending on the coverage, the intercalated Eu atoms form either a $(2 \times 2)$ or a $(\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3})$R$30^{\circ}$ superstructure with respect to Gr. We investigate the mechanisms of Eu penetration through a nominally closed Gr sheet and measure the electronic structures and magnetic properties of the two intercalation systems. Their electronic structures are rather similar. Compared to Gr on Ir(111), the Gr bands in both systems are essentially rigidly shifted to larger binding energies resulting in n-doping. The hybridization of the Ir surface state $S_1$ with Gr states is lifted, and the moire superperiodic potential is strongly reduced. In contrast, the magnetic behavior of the two intercalation systems differs substantially as found by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The $(2 \times 2)$ Eu structure displays plain paramagnetic behavior, whereas for the $(\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3})$R$30^{\circ}$ structure the large zero-field susceptibility indicates ferromagnetic coupling, despite the absence of hysteresis at 10 K. For the latter structure, a considerable easy-plane magnetic anisotropy is observed and interpreted as shape anisotropy.

Magnetism of cobalt nanoclusters on graphene on iridium

The structure and magnetic properties of Co clusters, comprising from 26 to 2700 atoms, self-organized or not on the graphene/Ir(111) moiré, were studied in situ with the help of scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Surprisingly the small clusters have almost no magnetic anisotropy. We find indication for a magnetic coupling between the clusters. Experiments have to be performed carefully so as to avoid cluster damage by the soft X-rays.

Origin and tailoring of the antiferromagnetic domain structure in $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ thin films unraveled by statistical analysis of dichroic spectro-microscopy (X-PEEM) images

The magnetic microstructure and domain wall distribution of antiferromagnetic $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ epitaxial layers is determined by statistical image analyses. Using dichroic spectro-microscopy images, we demonstrate that the domain structure is statistically invariant with thickness and that the antiferromagnetic domain structure of the thin films is inherited from the ferrimagnetic precursor layer one, even after complete transformation into antiferromagnetic $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. We show that modifying the magnetic domain structure of the precursor layer is a genuine way to tune the magnetic domain structure and domain walls of the antiferromagnetic layers.
